The 3DS has had a fairly diverse library of games so far, but the one thing that it seems to be somewhat lacking in is the racing genre. It could be that this is just due to the limitations of the portable format, but it nonetheless comes as a slight disappointment that there aren't too many games of this type available on the 3D wonder machine. Racing enthusiasts will be pleased to hear, then, that there's another upcoming arcade racer coming to 3DS, evidently as an exclusive.
There's not a whole lot to go off of, but a new website for a game called 80's Overdrive recently went live. Based off of the screenshots, it appears to take cues from the SEGA classic Out Run, with extremely colorful and detailed pixel art visuals. No other information is available at the time, but this looks like one to keep an eye on in the future. Check it out here.

I'm not a fan of racing games, but this one looks so colorful and beautiful that I'm gonna be following the development to see if it's worth buying. I hope it ends up being a fun game. Thanks for the article Mitch!
Looks AWESOME, but indies on Nintendo platforms seem to take a long time from announcement to release. Outrun was totally my jam so this looks great for me.
Looks a lot like outdrive, hope is as good as outrun was.
Radical!
Reminds me of Top Gear and Top Gear 2 for SNES.
I need to see this in motion, will keep an eye out for it.
Oh man. There's an huge influx of retro inspired racing games coming out! I'm still waiting for Drift Stage, 90s Arcade Racer, Horizon Chase and Racing Apex. But now there's a portable game with the same feel. Awesome!
as a young Charlie, I cut my teeth on arcade and Sega Genesis driving games like this.
there's just something special about a vintage driving game where it's just you against the clock, on an open road.
this game looks worth watching.
Those colours make me swoon.
I really dig the retro look of this, I'll definitely keep an eye on it.
Am i the only one thinking Top gear 3000?
This reminds me of Horizon Chase on IOS. Looking forward to checking it out.

The 3D effect in this game could be amazing.
not a fan of racers, but i love that 80's aesthetic.
Looks swell.
It definitely takes inspiration from Outrun, but it instantly reminded me of Rad Racer (I think that's its title) on the NES. I think because, if I remember correctly, at the time the 3DS was announced and all this talk about glasses free 3-D came about - Nintendo had mentioned that they had been experimenting with the technology since in the '80s and they actually made a 3-D version of Rad Race, but it required a peripheral that had to go over your tv screen. I imagine something similar to the old touch screen peripheral you could attach to the old Apple II computers back in the '80s. Can anyone confirm this??
It says its a kung fury spinoff
Right on the first text you see...
@Blastcorp64 actually, it was a headset.

Highway Star (the Japanese name for Rad Racer) was a pack-in game for the peripheral. 3D Hot Rally was another game, and even mentioned in Super Smash Bros. Melee. When Rad Racer was localized, we lacked the peripheral, but 3D glasses were still an "in" thing, and kinda worked, so they went with that as the solution.
If it is anywhere near as good as Outrun, then they have a sale.
I am a Top Gear and Outrun player so having this game on 3DS is really enticing to me.
I remember seeing something similar on tumblr. It was a very 80s style reader with similar graphics. I wonder if this is the same game, because I saw that a couple years ago.
Sweet!
With download-play multiplayer, please, to relive Top Gear.
This needs to be on the WiiU too at some point.
Hell yeah! This looks awesome!! And as firstnesfan mentioned, some serious Top Gear SNES vibes here, lovin it!!
Lack of racers on the 3DS has nothing to do with whatever limitations a portable system has, that should be irrelevant nowadays. Some of the best games ever made were on platforms with at least the power of the 3DS especially the racing genre.
Yep this will be on my list, but what has happened to 90's arcade racer?
@Morph It's allegedly still in development, I was one of the people who paid into the Kickstarter fund and the author recently gave all the backers a free copy of a Final Fight/Streets of Rage clone he that made while he was supposed to be working on '90s Arcade Racer. You can imagine what the comments section on Kickstarter looked like when that hit.
The author of '90s Arcade Racer has always been really bad at giving updates on the project. It's usually about 6 months between updates so it's hard to know whether the current silence is because the game is still in development or if he's just walked away without telling anyone.
Anyway, on a more positive note, this game looks fantastic and I really want it. Horizon Chase on iOS was a fantastic OutRun homage so I think there's still room in the market for 2D racers.
If/When it comes out, they have a sale. However I'm rather wary of indies. I respect what they do but many of them abandon projects or take so long you forget it is coming out.
Great aesthetics but I'm not a fan of choppy animation and if this is as retro as it looks there will be lots of that. With smooth modern animation, I'm sold!
Love OutRun (why oh why can't i have it on the Wii U?!?), and love lamborghinis (over ferraris for sure), so I am liking that screen shot.
Ooooo... COULD be good. Fingers crossed.
If it plays as good as it looks, we might have a winner here ^^
I never really liked these arcade racer...until i played outrun, now im enlightened
Nice!
@argh4430 Thanks! Those 3D goggles look pretty cool; I've never seen or really heard about them before.
Hurry up! I want this!
looks great!
@LuciusHellmonde Nope, first thing I thought of too! That's fine by me though since Top Gear 3000 was pretty awesome, even today it's still fun!
I'm still waiting for Initial D for 3DS to come to America ..
But hey, this looks really cool. I'll keep my eyes PEELED (OUT).
Love arcade racers so great news
I'd definitely buy this
On Twitter they recommended someone to check out 'Oh Deer' on PlayStation Vita.
A quick look at that and I'd be amazed if this wasn't by the same guys: Team Alpha of Necrosoft.

My friend had Rad Racer and we played with the 3d effects and 3d glasses. We played the game more often without the 3d. We loved that game. I'm looking forward to this game for sure.
OMG THIS IS LIKE IF OUT RUN AND HOTLINE MIAMI AND KUNG FURY HAD A BABY I AM DEFINITELY GOING TO GET THIS
This looks visually stunning. I always thought somone should make a Moonbeam City arcade racing game ... consider me intrigued, very much so!
After the awesome LA-Z Rider couch gag on The Simpsons, count me in!
Reminds me of Rad Racer.
Looks cool. I'm diggin it.
@MarinaKat if this comes out before 90s Arcade I won't care about it anymore, GIVE ME 80S OVERDRIVE
Has a Top Gear vibe. I would snap this up, day one.
OMG YES YES YES! This enters the scene among the top of my most wanted list.
