We miss Nintendo Selects. Nintendo's budget marketing label was used to indicate the company's best-selling titles that were sold at lower prices. Introduced in 2015 and used on Wii U and 3DS titles, every time we saw this little gold logo, we were always a bit excited to see those first-party titles at a reduced price. Sadly, this hasn't made a return on the Switch or the eShop, but Nintendo seems to be reusing some of those assets in a bit of a cheeky manner.
Good friend of Nintendo Life Jon Cartwright spotted the 'Team Picks' range over on the Switch's eShop earlier today and rightly pointed out that the branding looks pretty darn familiar. The gold label, the little crown, and even the font are all reminiscent or taken from the Nintendo Selects marketing
Of course, the biggest difference is what they offer — Nintendo Selects is actually a marketing label, so it's used to advertise games (often first-party titles) that are heavily discounted. Oftentimes, full-priced games can be bought for a fraction of the cost. Under the Selects label, Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD are only £19.99 in the UK, for example! And as for the 3DS, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D are both only £15.99.
Nintendo's 'Team Picks', however, is not a sale banner, nor is it a marketing line. It's just a promotional page on the Switch eShop that lists multiple best-selling Switch games — but they're not on sale. So people clicking on this page, expecting something similar to the Nintendo Selects, might be disappointed when they see that, no, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Fire Emblem: Three Houses aren't on sale at the moment (at least at the time of writing this).
Nintendo Selects is iconic branding at this point, so we understand why Nintendo went for something similar for its Team Picks, but we couldn't help but be a tiny bit disappointed. Especially as the Switch is yet to receive a budget label.
Did you spot this on the eShop today and pray for some surprise Switch reductions? Do you mish Nintendo Selects? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Almost like the marketing team are trying to create a connection between the two...
Hopefully they make use of it. Maybe the Nintendo Direct will clarify.
bring back nintendo selects please
They're all based off of tapestries hanging in the real life Nintendo eShop.
What Pak-Man said above. It also looks like the end of a gold ribbon prize.
Nintendo Selects started in 2011 with the Wii actually 😉
I hope Nintendo selects come back. It might remind people that games like Tokyo Mirage and Famicom Detective Club exist.
I'm all for discounts (Nintendo could definitely do better these days), but aesthetically... this is the only gold Nintendo logo we respect on products...
... Wun can only hope.
Nintendo direct tomorrow got a lot more interesting. I never got the chance to get some of the older switch titles.
Me: Come on Nintendo, can't we have Selects back?
Nintendo: What are you talking about, we have Selects at home.
The Selects at home:
Jon is still making NL content indirectly 😆
@Arisen Congratulations, I didn't know about the ND tomorrow until I read your *comment, I think that makes you a social media influencer.😂
Seriously though, thanks.👍
Edited b/c I spend way too much time on Twitter, except this morning apparently.🤷
@wuntyme8 Wun can only hope.
Actually, Nintendo Selects was first introduced in 2011 with Wii games being $20 instead of $50 or $60 (or the regional equivalent), then the Wii U and 3DS games followed this same price point in the following years.
Honestly got a bit excited when I first saw this in the eShop. Only to be disappointed when I saw it was just another attempt on advertising.
Please bring back Nintendo Selects, Nintendo, I really don't care about the label!
I wish they would bring back Player's Choice, as it incorporated discounts on not just first-party but all games that sold a certain volume and was on the market for a while (I think it was a year). I am pretty sure third parties pulled away from the program and Nintendo realized that the public would happily continue to pay $60 for Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros. into eternity.
@Slowdive Sorry, the borders are a big part of the reason why they are cheaper, so they aren't going anywhere. If you want the original version, you gotta shell out more. This is a mechanism which gives added value to the original copy, and that is far from a bad thing.
I remember being in Japan and seeing a 'Meal Deal' where each individual component added together equaled the same price of the Meal Deal.
That's not a deal, that's arithmetic.
As you were.
@HammerKirby Yeah. You're right.
Here's a link from Nintendolife back when it was introduced for Wii games.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2011/05/nintendo_drops_wii_to_usd14999_and_launches_budget_games
Also, it's basically a renewed brand "Player's Choice", which was introduced for SNES games in 1996.
@NintendoJunkie Fingers crossed!
It definitely could be something they accidentally rolled out early.
I just hope, if they do turn it into a discount line, that it's physical too and not just digital.
I miss Player's Choice 😞
So, nobody remembers the Japan-only Everybody's Recommended Selection from the Wii days?
@Slowdive I could also imagine a design where they merge the Switch and Selects emblems. Would look kind of dope.
@Switch_Pro
are you suggesting that Nintendo sells or has sold full price games right next to budget label games with the same title?
i think there must be some reason every company insists in changing the label on reduced price games, but your reasoning doesnt quite compute for me.
to me, a sticker on the plastic would be virtually the same benefit from nintendo's perspective, but would make the games much more desireable and would probably sell more of these games on the back end if they werent compromised by the changed artwork.
Please bring Nintendo selects back, they never put there first party games on sale for less then 10$ off, and selects were the only way we got any price cuts on these things. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
The fact that 1 2 Switch is still $50 and it was a terrible launch title means don't hold your breath for them to every sell Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for $20. The games keep selling crazy numbers so they have no incentive to lower the prices.
@HammerGalladeBro
No because I'm not Japanese
@Vil that gif looks familiar
@-wc- It's more about throwing early adopters a bone. The original cover often goes for (a lot) more used. My point is, the selects versions are intentionally uglier.
The lack of a lower-priced “Selects” series of re-releases is just a sad sign of declining physical sales. Nintendo needn’t go through the trouble of promoting, reprinting, and distributing older games on ever more costly physical media when they can leverage the eShop and most people (unlike me) are perfectly content to buy there.
I suspect we’ve seen the last of physical Selects lines from Nintendo, but please, prove me wrong!
"Introduced in 2015 and used on Wii U and 3DS titles"
No it wasn't. As others have said, it started on the Wii. Twilight Princess was my first Selects title, which I bought in 2011. Basic fact checking, guys.
@Switch_Pro
that is interesting. I'm still skeptical but that is a logical explanation.
i suspect they 100% of the time think about advertising/promotion, and never think about resale value and exclusiveness except through the lens of marketing, for example collector's editions.
the practice of relabelling discounted games remains puzzling to me except that somebody at nintendo's art department had the idea once in the 90s and it just stuck with everyone, as it so often happens.
oh well. I love all my games, even the ugly ones : )
For as long as we continue to sit and spend money on Nintendo Switch games, Nintendo won't ever bring out permanent discounts for the Switch until the next console has been released. Even then, they were pretty stingy for Wii U games, especially after shutting down the Wii U discounts on My Nintendo.
I'd love to see a new Nintendo Selects line where games can get a second wind at $30. Would be really nice to be able to get some premier Nintendo first-party games along with other exclusives at a more competitive price now that some of them are either obsolete (Splatoon 2) or could use a sales boost (Astral Chain).
@Teksetter Did not stop Nintendo from doing a massive reprint of 3DS games a while back around the time of the eShop closure announcement. The thing is parents still visit local Walmarts, grocery and drugstore chains and even take their kids to Gamestop. Nintendo printing a "Selects" line would be a great way to push games that will see nature sales decline, but would still be popular with younger audiences like Splatoon 2 or as an impulse buy for older audiences like Astral Chain, Donkey King Country Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad and others that have been out for a few years and have hit their sales peak.
Remember the "Greatest Hits" line is meant to revitalize sales and squeeze out some extra profits from games that either hit their sales plateau or need extra exposure at lower price points. That has always been the point of those kinds of lines. You won't see Mario Kart 8, but if Breath of the Wild got a re-release at a lower price point that would be a great way to push the game before the sequel comes out next year. Sony used to do this all the time during the PS2 and PS3 days (and they still do with PS4 games). When a sequel was about to come out they'd slap a "Greatest Hits" sticker on the previous version to squeeze extra sales out at a $20 pricepoint. While it is not as effective nowadays you'll still get a nice juicy profit from doing it.
@Wexter
Thanks for the optimistic counterpoint! Really, I do hope you’re right and Nintendo announces a Switch Classics or Players’ Choice line or whatever in the Direct this morning or the near future, ugly boxes and all. 😁
I had a heck of a time buying ARMS early this year, so there is one prime candidate. Imagine how desirable the rereleases would be if all the patches and free DLC were on the cart! One can dream, I suppose…
@-wc- It's very common practice, particularly in Japan. It doesn't only happen with games. Basically, if Nintendo wanted to, they could just restock the original run of the game and simply drop the price, and that's also easier as it doesn't require any extra work. The new SKU has multiple benefits, including rewarding earlier adopters with a more highly sought after version of the game, refreshing interest due to "relaunch", but also some mega fans believe it or not will double dip and get both. It's win/win for Nintendo. Of course if you only care about the game itself there's really no reason to go out of your way for an original copy.
@Switch_Pro
i am in both camps!
i only collect games for myself, never intend to resell them, and tell myself things like the color of the label dont matter
YET
on my shelf, it bothers me that i have X no. of gamecube games, and two or three of them are yellow. same for every other system.
i wish do what DVD companies used to do: release the same title again at a a lower price, but call it "special" and stick a embossed or holo foil sleeve n the outside and leave the case and disc as it is.
that way, there arent a bunch of ugly copies of games floating around, they get the seperapte SKU and the attraction effect, and nerds who care will for sure be double dipping to get that shiny exclusive thing, the sleeve. win win win!
cheers
