Crashing onto the scene back in 2017, NieR:Automata was a breakthrough moment for Yoko Taro. Though the director gained infamy for the Drakengard series — including the original NieR on PS3 and Xbox 360 — and his unusual interviews, Automata is the game that truly put him and his team on the mainstream map.
Five years later, the game came to Switch in the form of NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, an utterly outstanding port of a true modern classic. But why now and not, one, two, three years ago? Why is 2022 the time for Switch owners to hop into Automata, and what technical wizardry did the dream team at Virtuos have to pull to get Square Enix and PlatinumGames' action-RPG running on Switch?
We spoke to Taro, along with producer Yosuke Saito, composer Keiichi Okabe, and Virtuos' Shi Qiang to celebrate the success of NieR:Automata, lament over the lack of 2B in Super Smash Bros., and find out what makes this game so popular. It turns out not even the team truly knows...
Nintendo Life: It’s been over five years since NieR:Automata was first released. Why do you think the game has resonated with so many over the years?
YOKO Taro, director and scenario writer: You might not believe this everyone, but the real reason why NieR:Automata was such a big hit is… complete chance!!
Yosuke Saito, producer: It could be Mr. YOKO’s intriguing mysterious world, Yoshida Akihiko’s charismatic characters 2B and 9S, Mr. Okabe’s eccentric melodies or the sublime action game feel from the craftsmen at Platinum Games.
the real reason why NieR:Automata was such a big hit is… complete chance!!
But I think that the biggest reason was probably how Automata blended all these different elements together to make the grade.
Keiichi Okabe, composer: I think that it is probably how the things that Mr. YOKO imagined and PlatinumGames' ability to realise those things and balance them out came together so well.
After that, it was probably the power of my music though. (laughs)
Taro-san, you asked Saito-san for a Switch port of NieR:Automata during E3 2018. How do you feel now it’s finally coming to fruition four years later?
YOKO: I am hugely disappointed that we did not make it in time to get into Smash Bros…
This marks the series’ debut on a Nintendo console, what pushed you to finally make the jump to the Switch?
Saito: This came about from wanting to do something for the 5th anniversary and from seeing Astral Chain and thinking that we might be able to bring Automata to Nintendo Switch too. I think we have managed to port the game over with quite impressive levels of fidelity, so I would love to see everyone play it!
Virtuos has a pretty strong track record with Switch ports, how did you find working with them on bringing the game to the console?
it feels like there is nowhere in the games industry left for me to inhabit anymore
Saito: I think they are a great company, and they took on various difficult challenges on our behalf, so I would love to work with them again if we get the chance!
Given Automata’s fast-paced action-RPG combat, was it a challenge to maintain all of the different visual elements on the screen for the Switch port?
Shi Qiang, Studio Technical Director from Virtuos: Indeed, it was quite tricky in some places. That was why we were very thorough in our preparations.
The team started by quickly delineating where all the hot spots were and then developed an omnidirectional feature tracking tool for optimisation. For the engine and the code, we did overall optimisation on the CPU, GPU and shaders. We also carried out comprehensive optimisation on the art as well, including all of the models, lighting, special effects, stamps and assets.
Once the general optimisation process was complete, we carried out functionality spot checks on the complex scenes. For example, in the boss fight scenes, we did further optimisation on the detail level of the boss models, textures and lighting, including the large-scale rebuilding of the VFX to fit with the Switch’s technical capabilities.

Having brought Voice of Cards to the Switch, has that series’ success influenced your decision to bring the game to the console?
Saito: Personally, I would be happier to see it the other way around, with Switch players playing Automata and experiencing the world of YOKO Taro through that, then going on to play Voice of Cards!
Has the success of NieR:Automata changed the way you approach developing games?
YOKO: We had more capable staff on this one, so there was less for me to do. I mean, it feels like there is nowhere in the games industry left for me to inhabit anymore.
If there is one convenient reason why “you should play Automata on Switch because of XXX” then please could you tell it to the Square Enix marketing team?
For newcomers to Automata, why should they pick up the Switch version of the game?
YOKO: If there is one convenient reason why “you should play Automata on Switch because of XXX” then please could you tell it to the Square Enix marketing team? I think they would be delighted to know that. They might even buy you a beer. No, really…
Saito: I will answer this as a gamer, rather than as the producer. With the incredibly appealing characters and worlds that YOKO Taro creates, Okabe Keiichi’s beautiful music and Yoshida Akihiko’s superior character design, as well as it being made by PlatinumGames, one of the world’s top action game developers, is there actually any reason NOT to play the game?
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.
Thank you to Yoko Taro, Yosuke Sait, Keiichi Okabe, and Shi Quiang for taking the time to talk to us about NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition. You can pick up the game right now on Switch.

Yep yep perfect fit actually
The fact that Squares marketing team apparently doesn't see a reason to port games onto the Switch, really shows how we ended up with the KH cloud versions. Like you can argue day and night about if 3 could run in the Switch. (It could) but there is absolutely no argument for the rest of the games to not be able to run on it.
@Sequel Yeah, but Bayonetta's in SSB so...
As if Sakurai would have put her in anyway....
Would of loved to of seen that A.. I mean character in smash bros.
Imagine if Nickelodeon All-Star catches word on this and offers 2B a fighter slot... :B
Not one of my wanted fighters but I wouldn't have minded seeing 2B in Ultimate, and I be fine with seeing her in a future SSB game.
And we have already gone way past the "characters like her wouldn't have fitted in Smash"-beliefs (or whatever we should call it), considering some of the 3rd-parties we already have.
Not one of my top picks despite adoring the character and game…wouldn’t have objected to her being in or being in the next game but I think there are more iconic characters who should get in first
I could definitely see 2B being in the next Smash Bros. She's a really popular character. I believe Nier Automata is the best selling Platinum game ever.
So how many franchises do you think are on Nintendo platforms solely for the developers hoping their character would get into Smash Bros?
Yeah, no...as much as I love the character (as my avatar will show) with 2B's dress, they would have had to modify her in some way to appear in Smash. 2B with spats on? Blasphemy...
But I do agree that everyone should play NieR:Automata some way, somehow. It's my favorite game to come out in a very long time.
Boring game. So no thanks.
"No Patrick, that doesn't mean that 2B could never join Smash before Nier: Automata was released on Nintendo hardware first."
Not on my list but wouldn't have minded having another cool female fighter.
We got Alex instead, th-thanks Sakurai!
If this port came out at least by the end of 2019, we definitely would have seen something NieR related in Smash. I feel 2B has enough to work with to give her a proper moveset as a Smash character with A2 as an echo.
Imo probably would have had a way more exciting moveset than sora, he's just so bland.
2B would of made a great character for smash maybe next one down the line most likely and hopefully doomslayer makes it in as well.
Funny, I had just booted the NieR up and went here on my phone while it loaded. 2B would have been a great addition since I imagine her playing a bit like Bayonetta, who was one of my mains in Smash.
Look, I love Sakurai as much as the next guy. But Nintendo really should keep making DLC for Ultimate, with or without him. If we're really never gonna get another Smash game that's of the same scope as this one, I'd like to see this one just keep growing indefinitely. There's still so many more legacy characters who deserve a seat at the table and realistically could be put in easily. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Rayman, Master Chief, Lara Croft... That's not to mention other first-party Nintendo characters like Waluigi. They could support this game for years and years with new content, and it would be a huge moneymaker. A part of me is still hopeful they'll do more DLC eventually and include it in the NSO Expansion Pack.
Even if 2B or any character from NieR didn't make it to Smash Ultimate, at the very least Square Enix already got 2 reps (Cloud and DQ Hero) in the game while Sega got 2 reps (Sonic and Bayonetta) with one being from Platinum Games themselves so no hard feeling. If you count Joker and Sora that makes 3 Sega and 3 Square Enix reps in Smash Ultimate since Atlus is part of Sega now and even though Disney own Sora, his inclusion was made possible by Square Enix since they created the character.
I for one would welcome the bootyful android into Smash.
@Serpenterror You forgot the Final Fantasy 7 Advertisement that is Sepiroth
Yoko Taro's interview answers are always fun.
I'm still salty we didn't get an Astral Chain rep in Smash. That would've make more sense.
As much as I knew she was a fairly popular request for Smash, I usually dismissed with my own rule (to keep expectations in check) that if they've been a guest in another fighting game, it wouldn't be as exciting (discounting Ryu and Ken in MvC as that's a straight crossover). Sorry 2B, Akuma, Dante, Heihachi, Ezio et al.
Then Terry was a guest in Fighting Layer EX....which sort of went against that heh.
Loving the game so far! One of the best experiences on the Switch. Great interview guys!
Smash definitely needed another sword character.
@Sequel Bayonetta and Pyra/Mythra say otherwise. 2B would have been alright.
They would've been the perfect fit for Smash I didn't even think about them. A little shame but smash needed to stop someday
I'd love to smash.. I mean see her in smash
It's just as well. With virtually every single crossover 2B has in, from SoulCalibur VI to countless mobile games, the tools at her disposal break the game over her knee. If she made it into 4 or Ultimate, she'd just be an even nastier Bayonetta.
Joker was in a 3DS game, so it didn't stop him because he'd already been on a Nintendo console...
I bought this game because of its great reputation, and while it's definitely well-made and fun to play, it kinda just failed to grab me. I made it 7 to 8 hours in and dropped it. No urge to go back to it. It's weird, because it's clearly a good game to me and I enjoy action RPGs. Wish I could explain my boredom.
@TheBigK easy - route A and B are just not that interesting imo. The first two routes are more of a prologue and unless you’ve been religiously doing the sidequests, you won’t get into the meat of it until your third route. Everything past 10 hours is kinda where the praise is coming from
@TheBigK don't bother too much with the side quests unless they are convenient. There is only one missable, and that's late end-game. You need to set a mood for this game like you are going to watch a movie. The synthesis of the music, visuals, and story shouldn't be missed just because of your environment.
2B in smash would have been a dream come true, in fact the only reason I bought Soul Calibur VI was because of 2B
I honestly would have lost my **** if she got in.
Never change, Taro-san.
@Ramen756 Ahh yes, the classic "You need to play atleast 20 hours to get to the good part!"
@tabzer One shouldn't have to purposely skip an intentional design just to enjoy an experience fully. The game failed in the gameplay department (depending on who you ask). If all that's left are visuals and a story, then Nier would have been better served in that medium aka a movie.
@GoshJosh what "intentional design" am I proposing to be skipped? If you are referring to side quests, I'm not proposing to skip them. A lot of games have side quests that become inaccessible after certain parts of the story. In Automata's case, doing all the side quests as they become available can deter enjoyment of the main story. The feeling that they need to be done ASAP is unnecessary. It's flexible based on how people want to play, to a degree.
The story embellishes the gameplay, and vice-versa. Eventually the desire to do subquests will be genuine as opposed to feeling like a chore.
I think it's kind of silly to think that a movie can capture what Automata does if you don't have appreciation for Automata in the first place.
At least she got into Soulcalibur. Good enough, I guess.
There will be a new Smash Bros at some point, but it's unlikely on Switch.
I doubt Ultimate is fully done. On the Switch Pro/sequel console, it's possible we could get a port of the game with all previous DLC plus a new wave of DLC fighters.
Platinum made this game.
@Axecon That’s what I expect will happen. Visual upgrade for those who already have the game for free (or at least a reasonable fee) and the full game with all DLC for those who don’t, then another year or two of new fighters and stages. Usually I would find it disappointing to not get a brand new game for the next generation Nintendo console but Ultimate is so good I’d be happy with them continuing to expand it.
Removed - unconstructive
Don't really care about Nier personally and would honestly prefer the Astral Chain twins myself since it's a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Loved that game and its style with the dual-action combat.
No shade towards the people that like Nier though.
Removed - flaming/arguing
Removed - disrespecting others
it actually is a fantastic port and yes i would love to see 2B in smash. i mean why not everyone else is in.
Honestly, it's a bit weird to see this article in the same timeframe as many Smash "character concept" videos started appearing in my feed for no real reason. 2B being one of them.
Considering how the stage select screen is unfinished, just reach out to Nintendo and ask for an extra bonus stage to be added from this series
(Joker was already on a Nintendo console by the time he was announced for Smash Ultimate. Persona Q2 came out the month before the announcement in Japan)
