This puts Galaxy 2's absence under a whole new light. On one hand, the fact that Galaxy is emulated makes the reuse of assets in Galaxy 2 (to save space on the overall package) impossible, so the absence is justified. On the other hand, it makes this compilation seem lazy (I used "seem" because of all the HUD/input icon changes, widescreen and whatnot).
So basically the game is going to get an update... but only in physical format. Hm. I understand the physical format is kind of an endangered species at the moment, but physical-only perks might well lend themselves to all kinds of shady shenanigans.
I'm not saying this because of some stupid Rule 34 that can be looked up online, I'm saying this because tomorrow this could happen to a physical-only character for the next Smash, a physical-only mode in the next Mario Kart, or why the hell not, even a physical-only game in Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Just imagine a world where Super Mario Galaxy 2 was only available on game cards.
I only own the game on Xbox 360, which is currently residing in what I call its "retirement home" - my other place on the Alps. I'm not making the same mistake again. Scotty's coming with me with this rerelease. Switch for life!
@harouhiko The Switch has broken the barrier between home console gaming and handheld gaming. This is the right time to catch up, so yeah, some older games are the priority. Capcom alone has now made Devil May Cry and the PS2 Mega Man X games portable. Nintendo's own Super Mario 3D All-Stars is giving up a portable version of Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy for the very first time. This is the time, this is the place.
@nhSnork Wait, they actually said that "Virtuos was busy at the time"? I'm sure that Panic Button and Saber Interactive would gladly get some money from Disney and Square if they could if that's the case. Hell, I'm sure Virtuos is also very much not busy now.
Welp, one of my biggest hopes for the Switch - basically the only remaining franchise I wanted on the console - just went down the drain, just like that.
Here's hoping for Sora in Smash. That's all I ask at this point.
@Luffymcduck 8 Deluxe makes for an all-around snappier experience. Almost instant loading times, better framerate for up to two players (a framerate snob, me... WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME, MODERN GAMING?!), and a better handling of character selection (as CTR now officially won't feature a "favorite kart setup" feature). 8 Deluxe has it all. CTR can still wipe the floor with most other kart racers in the market, however. And the original 1999 release utterly obliterates the "masterpiece" that was Mario Kart 64.
A solar-powered Game Boy makes an unhealthy amount of sense to me. Also, who needs sound when you're out and about? It's not like you hear much when you're outside of a room.
@johnvboy Appreciated. Though to be fair, only Super Circuit and DS (and, by extension, 8 Deluxe) are among the true greats. The lack of a single player single race mode (AKA "VS mode") utterly ruined the experience for me. I don't want to race CPUs throughout an entire cup - not with the Ambassador release of Super Circuit being right there. Total deal breaker - I have 7 just for the sake of brand loyalty.
@johnvboy I get you're a hardcore Nintendo fan - so am I - but "good" is one hell of an understatement. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is pretty much the only MK able to beat CTR - Crash otherwise easily triumphs over the other MKs, period.
I find it amusing to see that English phonetics are a source of comedy in Japan. Britain, America, Japan, Italy, every country has its own distinct sense of humour. It's really weird when you think about it.
@Rob3008 I'm a rookie video game journalist myself. I also happen to work for a strictly no-rumor site. Believe me, some days reaching your daily quota with that restriction is pure hell.
I believe that this remastered collection - while by no means unwelcome - will royally #uck up whatever "appeal" Nintendo is gunning for when it comes to Nintendo Switch Online.
If this month we're getting N64 (the renewal for day-one subscribers is due this month) and Super Mario 64 isn't on it, there will be fireworks.
(That said, I'd take a non-subscription recollection any day.)
Discounting a game devalues the work poured into it, but as an unemployed dude in his - sigh - thirties I must say it worked wonders on my wallet. I'll have two half-days of on-call work next week, and then I'll be back to unemployment once more.
So... yeah. Economy being tough on everyone is my hot take on the topic.
@Hobbesyall I will make fake NL accounts just to like what you said more than once. Kimishima killed it as an Iwata successor, too bad they had to replace him with Furukawa. The guy hails from The Pokémon Company for crying out loud, that just screams anti-consumerism to me.
This one should fill up my Mario RPG fix... but on sale. I'm not giving (by proxy) Intelligent Systems the full price, especially when the one actually-worthy Mario RPG studio is out of business.
@Crockin Except when it comes to stuff we're actually looking forward to, e.g. news on upcoming games or the name of the second FP2 character for Smash.
I love Phil and all, but he should also check out those sweet Cuphead and Ori sales if he wants to be sure whether the other platforms "want a full Xbox experience".
I'd say "it's about time", but that phrase is linked to a different furred mammal who breaks wooden containers and eats fruit these days.
Still, well, it was high time DKC came to the service, given that, well, we pay for it. And given the N-Sane Trilogy is on Switch, I can say "high time".

Re: Nintendo Reminds Us About Pokémon Sword & Shield's Crown Tundra DLC With New Trailer
@avictorao
Neither. The Pokédex is the only thing to blame, although the DLC seems to be rectifying this so far.

Yes, they've since been officially referred to as such.
Re: Nintendo Reminds Us About Pokémon Sword & Shield's Crown Tundra DLC With New Trailer
As long as the extra time is spent on porting (yes, porting) the remaining pogeys' models over from the 3DS games, I can wait until early 2021.

Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Is One Week Away - Which Game Will You Play First?
I'd go in order, but would you really play Sunshine with Galaxy right there?
Seriously, I've popped in Sunshine lately and I still fail to see what the buzz is about. Mario has done far better elsewhere.
