@Heavyarms55 Not to mention Ditto's unavailability in the Ruby and Sapphire days was a major spanner in the works for breeders. I've lost count of the females clogging up my boxes before (and after, I must admit) FireRed and LeafGreen came along.
As much as I loathe this kind of people, The Pokémon Company's tendency to treat cheating as some kind of actual felony never ceases to amuse me. Street Fighter IV knew how to deal with ragequitters back in the day. You rage quit more than a certain amount of times? Have fun playing against nobody but your fellow ragequitters for the rest of your (account's) life. Why can't Pokémon have fun with cheaters rather than give their accounts some kind of death penalty? I mean, it's not even like the online features are free anyway.
@quinnyboy58 Super Mario 64, Galaxy 1 and 2, 3D Land, 3D World and Odyssey all wipe the floor with Sunshine. It's a straight-up small game that owes whatever longevity it has to padding. Hell, 64 had more levels and variety despite the fact it came out... what, like six years earlier? Compare and contrast with Sunshine, which has less levels, each one of them is pretty much only tropical-themed, and drags everything for way longer than it needs to. And don't get me started on blue coins, which are just bad game design period.
So basically he gets to stay safe (and work, given how devoted he is to it) while we get... well, we get to see work done. It's a win-win scenario for everyone. More hyped for this than the actual ARMS character.
How about all of them to make up for one sixth of the second Fighters Pass being first-party?
Of course, ARMS as a franchise is a million times more endearing than Fire Emblem's over-representation. Coming right after Byleth, though, doesn't do the ARMS fighter any favours (COVID-19 be damned!). Here's hoping for more third-party fighters for crazier combinations - sure, being a Nintendo reunion is what Smash is all about, but the day for it to be entirely about the Big N will come. Just not this time. This time we have to be able to pit Mega Man against Mario on a Sonic stage, or say, Sora against Banjo, Crash Bandicoot versus Pac-Man, Link against Master Chief, whatever.
I think everyone's seen the Fortnite default dance by now. Take a look at just how many different 3D models from other games have been given that exact movement. You could, theoretically, have the same experience with The Last of Us on inferior hardware, as long as the gameplay and the story stay the same. This is exactly why newer games compete with remakes on an equal ground - if an experience was valid years ago, it sure as hell still is now.
Graphics don't mean anything to an experience. If you need graphics that bad, go watch a Pixar movie. If you're playing videogames to have fun, stick with software that's actually fun to play, and not just neat to look at.
I think we can all agree that if Cuphead didn't come to Switch, the reaction from all of us towards the "next best thing" would have been way different.
I was among the angry commenters, mostly because I wrote an actual news article on Flipnote prior to the "reveal". It'd have been nice if I was the only one admitting to have fallen for a rumor, but doing so on behalf of an entire website is quite another beast entirely.
If I had an ounce of these skills I'd have beaten the game already, haha. The mere fact that this video portrays physical engines in a positive light is impressive already.
The only way I'm going to buy Sunshine again is in a collection package. All the other games however are a no-brainer either way. The more past Mario games join Switch, the merrier.
Would have worked better as a Nintendo Direct Mini announcement, but hey.
@Yattaze
That'd be the sensible choice, given how stupid the "Byleth recruits Byleth" quote-unquote gag was in Byleth's reveal trailer. It's not like the basic mechanics from fighter to fighter differ that much anyway, so the entire ARMS roster could fit with a few differences in some animations.
The main gripe I have with ARMS being in Smash has nothing to do with the series itself, but rather the mere gameplay aspect. What with "ARMS rep guy or girl" being able to, y'know, stretch his or her arms. We all know how hard Sakurai is working to keep reps' faithfulness to their series intact: the man already stated on Twitter that Smash's gameplay and ARMS' trademark stretching arms are going to be a challenge in balancing Ultimate.
I'm already predicting the ARMS character being just as broken as Byleth (whose brokedness already equals an ad for Three Houses interrupting the gameplay), if not even more so. I'm talking Smash 4 vanilla Bayonetta, mark my words.
At least we also get a close-combat fighter with a good recovery out of this, though.
Nintendo fans (me included): "Man, revealing an ARMS character after both passes had already been bought... right after Byleth... how low could you sink? Fooling us like this is a new low." Scalpers: "Hold my masks, sanitizers, beer and Ring Fit Adventure stock"
Only thing I wanted out of this Direct was either a third-party name for Smash, or a Kingdom Hearts HD Remix port announcement. The Direct Mini had neither, although I have to say that as far as first-party fighters go an ARMS rep is a MUCH better choice than whatever Byleth is supposed to be.
@Aurumonado
And all games that aren't will get the message that Switch players are not interested in third-party support, thus screwing whatever support we have.
This problem, goes without saying, is then multiplied tenfold with indies.
So it's a first-party character, huh. Well, he'd have been a better fit than Byleth at the end of FP1, but I'm not complaining. Would have been more hyped for third party representation but this will do. One down... Hype in check, little of it right now but that's already more than I could say about Byleth. Hype will fully resume with Challenger Pack 2 I guess.
@Anti-Matter
I would, for the sole reason that Orvus - Clank's father in the games - is voiced by Charles Martinet, Mario's voice actor. The more you know.
Me and my girlfriend have been reviewers for a site for a while now, and we got a La-Mulana each to review. I gave the first one an eight out of ten, she gave the sequel an eight point five.
Thing is, though, the reviews got published when the embargo was lifted - May 10. What took these two extra weeks, @SwitchVogel? Not a jab, mind you. Just honest curiosity. Was it about the games' release date?
In all seriousness, though (well, my battle royale suggestion still sounds good to me), Sakurai can even take a rest right now. But I wouldn't mind seeing the first name of FP2 as soon as possible, if not a Mortal Kombat 11-esque reveal trailer for all six fighters. I mean, Joker's (as in, Smash Joker, not MK11 Joker) reveal had no gameplay at all and yet the hype was very real.
For Pete's sake, if y'all want a physical version, put money where your mouth is. If you want a physical version that badly, fund it by supporting the digital debut first. If you're not willing to double dip, then that urgency to own a physical cartridge mustn't be that important to you.
Y'all remember when Brenna Hillier was taking a colossal dump on Switch's reveal? Yeah.
Now compare it to this - the next-gen should theoretically slaughter the Switch. Key word being theoretically. In practice, Switch built more hype in, what, two minutes worth of video? [EDIT: It was almost four, sorry.] That. More hype in that amount of time than in one full hour's worth of technobabble.
There's only so much teraflops and specs and whatnot can do. I mean, what @Trajan said is also true, but where's l'amour?
Gotta hand it to Smash, they know how to keep some interest going on a weekly basis. As for me, my position is still the same - the characters themselves can release whenever Nintendo sees fit, but I want to know at least the identity of the first character in FP2. Then Sakurai's team can get quarantined for how long they need to, but I'm just dying to know if my wait for Fighter Pack no. 6 will be made of complaints or hype.
