A few weeks ago, a game-breaking bug was discovered in Paper Mario: The Origami King which could potentially ruin a player's save and progress about 20-30 hours into their journey.
As we explained at the time, this problem was tied to the area in the game where you visit four spas in the Shangri-Spa area in order to access a secret fifth spa. Nintendo said it was aware of the issues affecting players and said it would address the situation in a future software update.
Version 1.0.1 of The Origami King has now been released, and sure enough, this update resolves this issue. If you had already encountered this issue, you'll now be able to proceed normally as well. In addition to this, it's resolved the glitch tied to the Black Shy Guy not showing up in the game's gallery.
Below are the full patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's official support page:
Ver. 1.0.1 (Released August 5, 2020)
Overall Fixes
- Fixed an issue in which you would be unable to enter the Spring of Rainbows in Shangri-Spa.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, you will now be able to proceed normally. - Fixed an issue in which players were unable to hit the Toad on top of the fountain in Shroom City.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, you will now be able to proceed normally. - Fixed an issue where Black Shy Guy would not be registered in the Gallery of the Musée Champignon—even if you have previously defeated one.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, return to Scorching Sandpaper West after the sun has returned and defeat Black Shy Guy once more to add him to your Gallery. - Fixed an issue in the Ninja Attraction in which, depending on the state of the player, certain Ninji enemies were undefeatable and halted progression.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, you will now be able to proceed normally. - Fixed an issue in which the game would occasionally hard lock in the Rubber Band boss battle.
- Fixed an issue in the Battle Lab in which the score would not be properly registered after solving 33 or more lineups in Speed Rings in the Ring Trainer.
Note: Previously registered scores will not change. New scores will be registered correctly after downloading this update data. - Fixed an issue in which you could obtain an item from outside of a certain coffin in the Temple of Shrooms. This fix also corrects a related error involving hints from the Love Toad in Toad Town.
Note: If you’ve already obtained the item from outside of the coffin, the Love Toad’s hint error will be resolved. - Fixed an issue in Overlook Mountain in which the event of looking up at Overlook Tower would occasionally occur from the bottom of the hill.

Nah, may pick up the game when it goes on sale, whenever that is.
A lot of issues, but glad they are fixed now!
YES, I can finally continue playing this fantastic game.
I do not think I've heard of a single glitch for this game that was not just addressed and fixed.
This game is a truly good game. It just is not a older style paper Mario and that is where It suffers.
I've only defeated the very first mid-boss, so at least I don't have to worry about encountering anything game-breaking now.
I'm surprised that these made it through to release. Nintendo games are never glitch-free, but the bugs are usually harder to find, and rarely game breaking. I wonder if the lockdowns might have screwed of some of the last minute development :/
Whatever the case, I'm done with Bug Fables, and itching to hop into a new adventure-time to finally play Origami King while I prep for Pikmin 3 Deluxe!
Feels good that I can now continue my quest without fearing of encountering major bugs (surprised that it got so many).
Nice, can start back up again. And just in time because Fairy Tail ended up being a train wreck. So It is all I have.
dang, a lot more progression and completionist issues than i thought there were, but good theyre finally patched. still working towards 100% the game!
I already beat the game, my first Paper Mario, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Loved the art direction, and thought it was a very charming game.
@Andrew5678 Lockdown has very likely hindered the ability to get proper play testers who communicate well to the development team. From what I hear face to face testing is much more efficient than communicating through emails about every minor bug.
I wouldn't be surprised if the games upcoming in the next few months have their share of bugs. There isn't much anybody can do.
A few bugs that I havent heard of there. Well, good on Nintendo for rolling that out so quickly.
That was sooner then expected!
Already played through it, and luckily I didn't notice any issues.
A wonderful game by the way, it's probably one of my favorites on Switch. Game quality is of course a subjective matter, but personally I think that the majority of negative comments about this game is heavily influenced of wanting something that strictly follows the old PM formula
@Kalmaro That'll be about 2025 then 😄. I just recently got this for my kids and their own switch. I'll definitely 'borrow' it, once they inevitably lose interest and go back to fortnite 🙄
The quick fix were nice but honestly I didn't encounter much of any of the bugs or gltiches or maybe if I had it didn't impact me as much as the other people.
This one should fill up my Mario RPG fix... but on sale. I'm not giving (by proxy) Intelligent Systems the full price, especially when the one actually-worthy Mario RPG studio is out of business.
Wow. Kind of surprised I managed to complete this game and not encounter one of these. Seems like there were a lot.
"especially when the one actually-worthy Mario RPG studio is out of business."
@AlexSora89 Well it's your choice. But part of the reason Alphadream went out of business is that people stopped buying the games.
@PlayedNSlayed That's fine, I'm in no rush to play this.
@LordGeovanni tbh i'm a little sad it's not fully a 'traditional' paper Mario game but otoh it's now the 5th title and only really the first two fitted what we still think of as the traditional titles.
On the other hand i'm liking what the game is doing thus far compared to Color Splash but also others.
For one it's the first game in a long while WITHOUT a level selection map and instead using more organic interconnected areas seeing players travel from one area to another directly or using direct fast travel shortcut. Something that hadn't been seen in a while. Area designs and connections are even closer to the original Paper Mario 64 than even Thousand Years Door, especially considering how many areas are connected to each others early in the game(overlook to autumn area to desert) as opposed to how TTYD itself had the player reach areas exclusively through Rogueport.
Another point I found interesting is the main villain. Though most enemies follow the post-Super Paper Mario "rule" of featuring only enemies and characters from traditional mario games, King Olli himself is actually a completely new character and one whose Origami style even is a quite different art style than either Paper Mario's style or that of mario games in general.
I don't know yet what this mean for the future of the franchise but seeing the success the title is seeing so far I feel it might be promising. The fact they can have such success with a non-traditional Mario villain like King Olli might be the most overlooked point because that alone might open more doors for the franchise again in term of creativity.
@Neoguardian86 Be sure to give the other games a try! The first three are especially great, and the others I enjoy a lot despite peoples' general distaste for Sticker Star.
@Ludovsky
Not to burst your bubble but this is actually the sixth game in the series.
The big thing to take away from this, most likely Nintendo is never going to properly compromise with us gamers. The Paper Mario that we all yearn for is gone. Nothing truly speaks this so eloquently then the fact that traditional RPG is gone for four games now. I will be honest, Super Paper Mario was not that bad of a game. And honestly, neither is this game. But the severe negatives of Sticker Star still last. I did not even hate Sticker Star or Color Splash that much... But there is no denying that Nintendo actively seeks to prevent these games from having what we want in them.
For all that I understand we have lost something significant, it is time for us fans to start heavily pushing for a change possibly not with Nintendo. I know that Bug Fables is getting a lot of press lately... I need to check that game out and possibly start pushing people that way.
this looks like a fun game, but when the battle have no purpose other than confetti, they just feel like a slog. I gave colour splash a chance and didn't hate it, but I will be sitting this out until a sale (or bargain bin when the local game shop decides it doesn't want it)
Edit: I played bug fables and that was fantastic. Glad someone had the initiative to take a working formula to a game, give it a fun twist with the existing game play, and make something new and exciting while focusing on why we enjoyed the originals, and some platforming (which was ok)
I really wanted to give it a try but after looking quite a few videos, I think I’ll pass. I don’t like those battle system puzzles the way they seem to be in this game
I didn't encounter any glitches on my playthrough. Great game, one of the few games I've played recently that I felt like replaying again after completing.
