Nintendo released its final major update for Super Mario Maker 2 earlier this year in April. That doesn't necessarily mean it's completely stopped supporting the game, though. It still plans to release minor updates to further polish the experience and the first update since 3.0.0 is now available.
According to Nintendo's support page, version 3.0.1 deals with a Ninji Speedrun exploit. Apart from this, it also fixes some other issues to make the experience more enjoyable, but no extra information is provided. Here are the full patch notes:
Ver. 3.0.1 (Released July 14, 2020)
Course World
- When the player opens the pause menu while playing Ninji Speedruns, they will not be able to perform any actions for a certain period after closing the pause menu.
General
- Issues have been fixed to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.
As usual, if you update to the latest version of the game, you'll no longer be able to play with those who are using Version 3.0.0, or earlier. Have you downloaded the latest update for Super Mario Maker 2? Notice anything else? Tell us below.

I mean, bug fixes aren't a bad thing.
I still don't understand why they had a "final" update the way they did. Be it paid or free, I really expected a lot more content to be added to this game. Themes, power ups, characters...
Missed opportunity in my opinion.
Still waiting for the SMB 2 style.
Honestly, I would rather have Nitnedo release a huge update every couple of months than tiny ones that don’t matter every other week.
@Chrysologus Although it would be cool, an SMB 2 style is out of the question at this point considering the last big updates are behind us and we got the SMB 2 mushroom.
Its kinda disappointing that we never got any new themes, I was really hoping for an SM64 or even an Odyssey theme in the vein of 3d world. Oh well
@Adrevenue I think the idea has always been 2D Mario, but that brings up how cool it would be to have a 3D Mario Maker.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah... I know they're saving ideas for a potential third game and I'm thankful for what we got, because I love the game... but I REALLY wish there was more.
@gauthieryannick @Deege I mean that's entirely possible sure. But unless they are planning to release SMM3 on Switch it seems pretty silly.
And Nintendo usually doesn't do that. On occasion, but not very often.
@Apportal Hey I used to play your smm2 levels I hope you are doing good
@Odyssey27_Mario cool! What is your username on the game?
@Heavyarms55 Agreed. Mario Maker should really be a "platform" where they keep adding stuff forever(like Minecraft I believe). I would gladly pay for new content. Mario Maker has so much potentiel for growth,it's a shame they stopped after one year. Mario Maker 3 wouldn't make much sens to me,just update MM2
@Isaix I mean, the "other themes" section actually used "themes" as in plural. Now, that could have been a localization oversight, but I seriously doubt it. To me, it seems even people who worked on the localization thought more themes were coming. And if Mario 3D World was the only new theme they intended on adding, why have a separate section for it at all? There were already various items that could only be used in one theme or another.
@Adrevenue the last free update actually 😉
The worlds thing was unexpected but I really wish they had just made a huge character select screen. Controlling multiple characters differently and having people set records based on who they chose would have added so much more depth.
MM2 lay completely dormant until they updated it with World Maker. Now I'm on World 6 of making my whole game! It's been real fun actually!
I’d like a new area of dev created levels all with the new features they’ve added since release.
my favorite game of the last year... I just reached the 200 hours milestone of it! so sad that last big update was the final.. how i wanted more.. and like ppl said above, I would mind paying for a more DLC...
60+ hours for me, and I think is was more than worth the money. Combining the in game levels, plus a million online levels, plus the create your own levels: wow.
I totally understand the comments wanting more content, but for me there was more than enough. And, I would go back to the game more often but there are so many more games out there.
In a world where I could only own 5 games, MM2 would be one of them.
@gauthieryannick
Provided we're getting one in the first place.
Did they ever end up fixing the online multiplayer lag?
This game just screams missed potential. The lack of additional themes, special events and amiibo support gave this game a short shelf life when it should've been a major powerhouse like smash or mario kart
@dewokkel True, but I don't see any paid dlc coming along. That said, I would kill for a true 3d level editor
@Heavyarms55 My guess is they wanted to move onto development of the 3rd game for their next system to have it ready as a launch title. I was foolish to think they would hold some of the most requested things for a patch like water volumes/tiles on any level lol.
@Heavyarms55 Wouldn't that be something if they released SMM3 for a 75% discount update of SMM2? But yeah kinda wished for more worlds. Really wanted a "Yoshi's Island" world.
They removed the hyperspeed glitch I was using in a level, now in got to wait until another one if found
@Reigestugatensho If they did that, it should just be a DLC with a standalone release like New Super Luigi U or Xenoblade Torna.
I’ve been noticing the game experiencing weird slow-downs if things were unloading from memory offscreen (like Spiketops that crawl offscreen, at bottom). I’ve also noticed stuttering animation if slowly moving Mario forward. They’re brief hiccups but still weird.
So maybe this patch fixes some of that?
@rex_rex 800 hours for me
@JayJ
As cool as it sounds, I don’t think a 3D Mario maker would be nearly as fun as some people might think. Creating levels on a 2D plane is one thing, but I don’t know if I’d want to play crushingly difficult Mario Maker levels in the 3rd dimension. Ha!
I put $5 on there being a direct soon with Mario remakes.. but also a new skin for Mario maker 2....
@Heavyarms55
i believe one main reason might be that Nintendo wants to keep all players on the same page and if they would do many small updates, the userbase might get more fragmented which is OK with games like Playstation's dreams where the audience is probably older but MM2 is supposed to follow a start-game-play philosophy with as little obstacles as possible.
Still as I'm an old guy myself, I'd certainly welcome more updates as well.
Final major update in just after a year! This is no way to treat loyal customers that pay premium price for an older port and except to be treated with respect, services and constant updates for a much longer time like competition does
@Reigestugatensho Super Mario Maker 3 with 75% discount for those that own 2? C'mon you know Nintendo better than that. There was 0% discount for those that owned the same game on Wii U.
@valcoholic No way. That doesn't make sense to me at all. Every game gets updates these days and it's simple to do. If anything, kids are more used to it than older players because they are growing up with it.
I remember when I bought games that were finished products!
@Heavyarms55 I didn't play the game and, like most people, I was pleasantly surprised on the original game that they put as much effort as they did into it, as far as free updates and new ideas. With all of the stuff they pumped into the sequel from the get-go, I see it as overall being a win, don't you? Yeah there's stuff they could have added, but this is a full-featured product.
@Heavyarms55 more add ons to the current version means less opportunities in the sequel
I would love more content. What I'm disappointed in is the search. On the wii u there was a website where you could search for various types of levels. Right now there is no easy way to find Yoshi levels. This feels fixable (since the wii u had it on the website).
@dimi Guess I see your point. I technically wouldn't mind paying the full price for a completed game. There is still a thriving community for both the original Splatoon and Mario Maker on Wii U after all these years.
This game had a lot of missed potential IMHO. The search/discovery tools didn’t make it easier to find quality courses and they didn’t add any course styles despite the label. I loved SMM1 but will think long and hard before buying the next one.
@Heavyarms55 What are you talking about? Nintendo said nothing about a final update. They DID say something about a final MAJOR update, though.
@Godzilla2021 Semantics. Last meaningful update.
