Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition - a remake of the classic GameCube title - is headed to Nintendo Switch.
Released back in 2004, Crystal Chronicles tasks players with traveling the world in search of 'myrrh' which is used to fuel crystals protecting the world's settlements from the poisonous Miasma. Starting in their home village, the protagonists go on a journey to find rare trees which produce this fuel, exploring dungeons along the way.
Information on the remaster is still rather sparse at the moment - aside from the fact that it will be "more beautiful than ever" - although we do know that the game is expected to launch in 2019. Make sure to check out the trailer above to relive your GameCube-flavoured Final Fantasy memories.

okay
Yes!
Great game! I don't 'do' the mainline FF games, but I'll definitely pick this up.
And the Sesame Street letter of the day is P for- gunfire
What's funny is My Nintendo News posted this game is only coming to PS4. They really love drama.
@IronMan30 That's because it was initially announced for PS4 only. Many other pages did the same.
Ooooh...!
A Gamecube Remastered game.
Oh god no! Give us the original Final Fantasys please
Is GameCube footage used in that trailer? I really hope they're going to polish it up a bit more if that's footage from the Switch/PS4 version...
@RazumikhinPG @Frendo all it took was watching the trailer to debunk the idea that it's PS4 exclusive. Pretty lazy reporting from MNN and those other outlets.
Because of course, if it's a Square Enix game on a Nintendo console, it always eventually comes out on PS4, but never the other way around. (Let's see how long TWEWY lasts!)
Meh, whatever, as they always say: losing an exclusive is never inherently bad as it means "more people get to enjoy the game."
Hopefully the "Pocket" version of FFXV won't be the only instance of Nintendo fans "getting to enjoy" a previously non-Nintendo-only game, either, but with SE's track record I'm cautiously optimistic at best.
My more cynical side is seriously thinking that the PS4 version of Crystal Chronicles is the tradeoff for XV sort-of-coming to Switch.
Good for the fans, but to me this game was a letdown though
And here I was talking to my childhood friends who I played this game with about how cool it would be if Square released this for the Switch... Whattaya know. Color me excited
God this makes me so happy. Loved this game on GC and honestly think it should have been given the remaster treatment on Wii U with that sweet 3DS connectivity. Can't wait!
@AlexSora89 SE sold its soul to Sony when they put FF VII on PS1.
Never played it so I'll give it a look.
@Spectra yeah I hope they make this more accessible too. So horrible playing with 1 other person or single player. Always wanted to play but none of my mates were interested in gaming at the time!
@AlexSora89 TWEWY will stay exclusive to Nintendo given how non-Nintendo platforms are very against using non-traditional control schemes. You rarely see PS4 games even using gyro controls.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I absolutely adored this game. It was just so whimsical and charming, with an enchanting atmosphere. I'm definitely all-in for this one.
@IronMan30
Can we all preeetty please get this comment to over 100 hearts?
@Grumblevolcano
Again, what IronMan30 said. If Sony asks Square to rework TWEWY into an action RPG, Square will announce a PS4 remake of TWEWY. If Nintendo asks for a Kingdom Hearts HD recollection on Switch, Nintendo gets nothing.
I'm not an expert, but I'm merely going by the track record. I think it's already a miracle that not only we saw Cloud in Smash Bros. 4, but he's also returning in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - he might well have been the one exception to the "Everyone Is Here!" selling point for the next Smash game.
wow!!!!! never played this so I will be all over this!
@Frendo
No, it wouldn't be that out there. Definitely not.
I loved this on the GameCube, so yeah.. I'll buy it again!
Aw man, I wish it was the Wii one. That game is one of my all time favorite Final Fantasy games, never understood the hate.
But this could be cool too, being able to play it without all that GBA Link crap should be really fun+
Poor Nintendo Direct....just getting pillaged by the day. Good announcement, though. I didn't play the original so I'll pick this up for Switch in 2019.
GameCube remasters... lets hope we get more. Or just let us buy the originals!
Such a monster list I could make for GameCube games I’d love to play on the go
There is actually a fair number of GC games, I would like to see re-released or remastered for the Switch, but I cannot said that this is chief among them. I didn't really leave a lasting impression with me to be quite honest, not bad just mediocre alll-in-all.
I've heard good things about this game. It barely looks like it has been touched, though. It looks really rough.
No way, I love Crystal Chronicles. Actually accessible multiplayer? Sign me the hell up.
Awesome. I had this for the GC but was probably too young to appreciate it. Will get stuck in this time around!
Was this meant to be revealed for the Direct? It kinda seems like it.
At this pace the Nintendo Direct will last 10 minutes
Oh look someone whining that the game is coming to Ps4 too. Big surprise there.
I never liked these spinoffs personally and would rather see new games than half baked remaster of everything Square has released but other people love them so I'm clearly alone.
@Frendo
Yes, yes, YES.
I'm sorry, I've never been the conspiracy theorist type, but it makes way too much sense.
Ok much bettrr than that mobile phone port.
Will purchase
At last! Whenever someone discussed possible Gamecube ports, this was the one game I thought about immediately. I've only played Rings of Fate so far, but that crazy love child of Landstalker and Mana left me holding out for the whole subfranchise. Now the title that started it all is finally (no pun intended) within my reach.
@IronMan30 "tell us more about this soul sale" - Microsoft.
Sony just lured Squaresoft in with more room for ambitious cinematics which the team's own interests and VII's trendsetting success put on the default to-do list for the rest of the series. But the flagship exclusivity didn't last much longer than Atlus's with SMT.
A multiplayer Final Fantasy for Switch? Not bad... And its all real-time action, right? Sweet~ I might just get this one.
Why not FF:Tactics?! - I miss the job n clan/guild system - well worth a remaster
@Nintendofan83
Yep. I shut up about this as I wanted to keep composure out of respect for the victims of the earthquake, but this is exactly what I thought would happen. At this rate, the Smash character reveal might as well as drop without a Direct.
This game gives me hope that they will somehow remaster Crystal Chronicles Ring of Fates from the DS! They would have to change the controls around, but I think they could do it with some effort!
Day 1.
Absolutely loved the original and got well into it. The graphics were gorgeous at the time. If they’ve put 4-player local multiplayer in (without needing a gameboy 😂) I’m there.
@6ch6ris6 that sums up my response.
Okay, I could get into this.
Would have rather seen crystal bearers ,but another rpg is always good
@NewAdvent At this point I wish they would just kill it off, officially, or announce a date. They really need a set schedule for Directs regardless, because most of the toxicity surrounding them comes from their inconsistency.
Yay a crappy hack n slash spin off....
Give us something proper final fantasy like:
NES collection (preferably ds remaster)
SNES collection
VII
IX
X
XII
XIII
JUST SOMETHING WORTH IT PLEASE!!!
It is charming and I enjoyed it but it was a bit broken as a single-player game.
@Frendo
Think we can expect the prime trilogy early next year. To build hype for prime 4
@Frendo may I ask you what dev confirmed Sony paid them to stay away from the Switch and if you have a source? I’ve never read anything about it, so I’m a bit skeptical.
Thank you ✌🏻
I got a group of friends together a couple months ago to play this game again. I had to take out all my old GBAs and cables. This will be a much more convenient way next time.
Why ?
Didn't SquareE have at least 20 games to remaster before this one ?
@Tibob Or release in here games that are already localised like Dragon Quest XI (3DS)?
While I'd love to play this as I never had a chance on the Gamecube, I'd like to set my expectations a bit low as I'm practically sure it'll be released at the terrible price of $80 (Canada), as per the recent trend of "remastering" old games and selling them again at full price (which as gone up in Canada from 60 to 70 and now 80 over the course of about a system generation). So if it's again something like this, I'll probably skip it, again.
I can't help but see all these remasters as relatively easy cash grabs, as unless they are completely redone from scratch, upgrading some assets and some code is far, far less costly for a studio than creating a whole new game. And price should reflect that.
Now, that being said, game looks fun. And it will be added to my wish list.
@AlexSora89 ha, it really does seem lik SE feels obligated to put every game on PS4, though. Obviously there are exceptions, but it seems that way.
@nhSnork true. I guess since Sony consoles tend to sell well, SE still puts their main games on Sony consoles, just because they sell.
@Frendo, but you could be forgiven for that, news outlets should report information better.
@BlueOcean
And the Seiken Densetsu collection !
Ya carrying that thing around was sooooo much fun lol.
@AlexSora89 yep because Sony gets everything that comes out on a Nintendo console except for octopath 2 dragon quest spinoffs 4 other crystal Chronicles games, 1 game in the chocobo series. Not to mention the massive amount of handheld exclusives
One of the best song intros of all video games is in this game.
This is all me and my friends played at school!!!! Love it can't wait
@Tibob Yes, it's sad that they are focusing on Japan so much in 2018.
@Cosats The whole soundtrack is wonderful.
more excited for this then ff15 pocket. but man I could kill for some ff12 remastered on my switch!
@BlueOcean
It's also a bad business decision :
> the cost of translating would be by far compensated by the sales on the eshop (physical would be too costly imo)
> you get more people to love your brand & games and buy your next big release by making your products available to them
This wasn't what I wanted it to be way back in the GC days, but most people loved it so I'm happy for the fans........thankfully, for me, Octopath Traveler exists
@Tibob Exactly, not to mention:
1. Some games are already localised (Dragon Quest XI)
2. Translators as not as expensive now because more people talk English and Japanese.
3. Even the time that takes to translate a RPG is not an valid excuse because they keep releasing games from 20 years ago...
What makes people think this was going to be at the Direct?
Sony dropped the reveal on their TGS show.
These games get ‘locked-in’ weeks & months in advance.
A lot of Sony/PS hate today. Even more so then usual.
@NewAdvent Who said monthly? I just said they should release a schedule, or they should do it at regular intervals.
A general direct every three months, consistently, would be great. They already release this many, or more, general directs yearly, and that's not including different types of directs. It's just done sporadically. Pepper in game-specific, indie, and micro-directs as needed. Just keep your big first and third party announcements to these directs.
As for toxicity, I'll concede that it exists in every community, regardless. But irregular schedules don't help it either. It ends up just being confusing, and frustrating, for engaged fans.
Why not re-fantastered?
@IronMan30
Square-Enix's E3 this year was... something. They went from a total multiplatform stance to a PS-ausagefest in a heartbeat. It's actually pretty funny!
@Dalifano
The mere mention of Chocobos gave me Vietnam flashbacks of the Chocobo Racing 3D cancellation. The original was truly a hidden gem of the PS1 library.
I had my fun back in the day with 3 friends playing this, so I'm glad a new gen can play now. I tended to like mechanics from Rings of Fates better, but who knows, this could be a nice little remaster all said and done.
Hopefully this is the first of many GameCube remasters!
Add online play ill buy thid. I had so much fun playing this with friends back in day.
I used to play this with GBA link cables.
It was fun.
"A remake of the classic GameCube title - is headed to Nintendo Switch."
When is a remaster a remake?
amazing!
Oh nice.
Isnt this a MP game as well? Well suited for Switch local wireless I would say...
@JaxonH it is, the remaster supports the online MP
Just having a chuckle at the Sony conspiracy theories.
FFVII went to Playstation because 1. CDs, and 2. They thought they could make more money.
This is on PS4 because it’s the biggest selling system around and they think they can make more money by releasing it on that format.
Anyone would need a particularly good reason to not release a game on PS4, such as the control scheme or Nintendo paying them not to. There’s no conspiracy, it’s about money.
@NewAdvent
Never tomorrow since it 9-11
@Captain_Gonru @aaronsullivan Can't believe neither of you guys cc'd me on this after our conversation about the game and this exact thing hapoening only a couple of days ago. I'd be insulted if either of you had posted. 😉
I loved this game back then
@JaxonH It was made for 1 GameCube and 4 GBA, there really wasn't much of a game there single player, which I think they'll try to rectify with NPC. A couple of the other guys and I were just discussing it on Friday. Most of posts 111-130.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/09/eiji_aonuma_says_therers_a_possibility_the_next_zelda_title_will_be_on_switch#comment4664488
Em, ok. I don't think it will sell worse than PS4 version. Now Square remake history and bring the new FF VII to the Switch!
@AlexSora89 Yeah I don't know what the relationship is between Square and Sony but it's bizarrely tight. No doubt it goes back to the PS2 era when Sony was outright buying/funding/co-publishing half of Square's output, but it's so weird how they were Nintendo, then they were all Sony, then they were multiplat everywhere, now they're back to talking only about Sony, but doing Sony+Switch and ignoring XBox (Tomb Raider/Just Cause excluded.)
@NEStalgia
All I'm asking for on Switch is a remaster of the non-III Kingdom Hearts games, that's all. The Switch can run 'em. It's time for Nintendo fans to be able to enjoy the lore in its entirety, too!
I actually had the GC and DS setup of these in the day, the GC was fun but a slog, the other cleaned up the pain in the butt lugging of that chalice up quite a lot. Hopefully the perks/fixes of the Ds are carried over and further refined as it was a pretty nice title.
That said, given the android like roots of the system, would it kill them to port over all those nice mobile releases of the old FF and Dragon Quest titles that saw remasters on the DS and what not? I'd so buy DQ4, probably also FF1 and DQ1 too.
@NEStalgia - It's because in the PS1 era they jumped from N64 due to carts and payoffs from Sony to be their flagship to make the system sell like crack. Sony paid a crap load of money to both advertise the hell out of the coup of getting FF7 and then further used Sony media to trash talk the so called N64 kiddie box (which they made up since in the period before N64 had more T/M games than they did for its 1st year.) Square got deeply in bed and debt to them when they moved over and then Sony covered their marketing expenses and other hand outs which is why they dried up entirely on Nintendo until the GBA and GC era.
@NewAdvent I still think a schedule would alleviate some of the community's frustration. We expect them to happen, because they do happen, and quite often throughout the year. It's just that they're mixed in with other directs or randomly squished together at the beginning, middle, or end of the year.
I saw quite a few people asking for this in the FFXV-Pocket discussion on Reddit, looks like they became prophetic.
@Frendo
Why are you just talking about Japan? There are over 4 times as many PS4’s out there as Switch’s worldwide.
@Popyman
Because it was confusing and boring one with horrible controllers? Crystal Bearers was probs the only Wii game I never finished.... When I started to read this article "omg why they'd remaster that" only to realise this was GC game and not the Wii one....
But it's ok. People prefer different things. You are allowed to like Crystal Bearers.
Wut
Not really that bothered unless they make some huge improvements on the GameCube version. It was too restrictive where you could move without your carrier.
So is the 4 player GBA-link now transformed into an online mode?
I couldn't beat the original because of the multiplayer focus that needed several GBA's. FFCC had a wonderful soundtrack though. One of the best on the Gamecube. I wish they'd make a sequel to FFCC: My Life as a King, that was my fav Crystal Chronicles game.
Played this game a ton with my sister and brother back when it released even through the hassle of the GBA controller stuff. We had a great time and the soundtrack is wonderful. It is very charming and worth revisiting.
This is great. I’ve never got to play any of the Chrystal Chronicle games. I’m all for bringing as many RPGs to Switch as possible, even if they are older ports.
I was actually just playing this game the other day. This was always one of my favorite games on Gamecube. I have revisited it multiple times in the past 15 years playing it with my cousins, sister, friends, and recently with my wife and having a fun time. So excited for it to come to Switch. Definitely a day one for me.
I remember not having a Final Fantasy on the Gamecube and my brother had Final Fantasy on PS2. I was so happy when this came out back in the day. When I got it, he laughed at it saying it was not a real Final Fantasy and he was right. I was disappointed, but I still played this spin-off despite its flaws. I even enjoyed it. This one has the charm that the WII one is missing. I purchased all of them even the DS ones. This is no Masterpiece but an OK action RPG. I am going to get it and love it. Nostalgia cometh.
More GameCube ports please.
Now can we have a Super Mario Sunshine remaster too?
Ha ha! I have been begging for this for a bit so I am ecstatic.
Hmm...So should this be my first game with "Final Fantasy" stamped onto the title, or should I wait for something else to come along? The closest game I've played to anything this series offers is Bravely Default.
Lol of course there's people making up conspiracy theories. Can't have an announcement of a good game, gotta turn it into an idiotic "people are meaaaaan to nintendoooooo" nonsense. As if somehow the PS4 getting a remaster means that everyone must be conspiring against nintendo, obviously.
@electrolite77 of course any company would put games on PS4, I was initially criticizing MNN's coverage of this game. The stuff about Sony was a joke, obviously Sony systems tend to sell well and that contributes to SE's games going there.
It's 10:41 est in Central Florida and I already jumped out of my seat when I read the article title and saw thumbnail. So underrated! The Gamecube was the first console I purchased on my own, with birthday money and lawn mowing money. I believe I bought FF: CC used at Gamestop and quite enjoyed it. I really didn't have anyone to play local multiplayer with so I wasn't too worried about paying for the overpriced multiplayer. I always wanted to play my my wife and we have the ds games that shouls be compatible with the Wii game, I believe.
@AlexSora89 I'm pretty sure Sony owns the rights to 1&2 the the same way they own PS1&2 era FFs. We could get the portable ones like DDD, and Birth by Sleep etc. But 1&2 won't leave Sony. Even XBox couldn't get them to tie in with the release of 3, while Sony's selling the complete collection of all 7 games (1, 2, 3, and all the handheld HD remasters) for $99.99. KH3 on X1 is like Mass Effect 3 on WiiU
@AlexSora89
You kind of make a good point about the trade off, but let me point something out: "Pocket Edition" released on mobile devices already, so what mobile exclusgee franchise did PS4 get in return? I think they are just making a business decision since FF: CC was not a huge seller on Gamecube and putting the resources into a 10 year-old game to port on one concole (even a big seller like Switch) is risky.
@Tyranexx I always recommend starting with XIII..... That way you'll save a lot of money on the other 50 games, sequels and spinoffs when you lose all interest in FF.
Bravely Default (and Octopath) borrow from the early NES/SNES games. IMO I'd think of FF as about 4 distinct eras. The original 6 is one genre of game. These (and Chrono Trigger) are what BD and Octo feel like a spiritual successor of (though I have very mixed feelings about BD....the jobs grinding was obnoxious...that comes from FF4. Octopath does it too, and I'm not fond of that after discovering it....but it's not as gross as BD's.)
PS era FF (VII through X/X2): was another era of FF. These are probably the most famous in general (1-6 is for the FF nerd-core, 7-10 were the ones that put FF and JRPGs no the map in the west (while Japan happily ignored them and played DQ ) DQXI feels more in line with PS era FF than modern FF does.
FFXIII is.....well, the mods won't let me print my opinion of it The weird thing is I hated it at the time, but I often get fond memories of it....so I'm not sure what to think today. But the story, the writing, the pacing, the world, the characters was so so so dismal. The backgrounds were pretty, the story sounded like it should be cool....if you had any idea what was going on at all as the game assumes you know the history of its world as well as the characters without ever telling you said history, and drowns in its own technobabble. HOWEVER combat was actually pretty good. The two sequels were allegedly better. I want them to make a current gen collection of all 3. Even better if it's Switch.
And now 15....you get 15 proper which isn't a turn based RPG at all but more of a Kingdom Hearts-meets-Bayonetta and brooding boy band emos on Route 66....or something. Or the Switch/phone version that's kind of a Diablo-esque hack and slash....which actually sounds fun.
CC is more of an action battler, though. IF you're looking for "core" FF, you want a numbered game, and then you just have to pick if you want "classic" (DQ, Octopath) era FF (1-6), "famous" era FF (7, 8, 9 (my fav, it was the last return to a fantasy theme before going tech/mythology), 10/10-2, 12) (11 is an MMO, no an FF RPG) , or the weird ones: 13 with good battle, bad pacing and sotry, or 15, the action game.
Confused yet? Just buy Dragon Quest. It's easier to figure out what end us up, and it's the better game.
@Spectra The challis carrying absolutely made the game for me and my group of friends.
@NEStalgia It is nothing related to exclusive deals with Sony. If they ever existed they have expired. It's just stupid business decisions. Square Enix could release FF and KH games for Xbox, Windows and Switch (if it's technically possible). I'm sure that the FFVII Remake is just a temporary exclusivity deal though.
Hmmm.. I should be happy about this but somehow I don't. Now I wonder how they are going to implement the two screen gameplay for this cause the original required a second screen for inventory and stuff. While I love news of more remastered like this coming, it's starting to get kinda meh to me as more and more are starting to pop up. Okami, I'm good with that as Okami was great to begin with, Onimusha, it's an okay game so I'll get back to it, Shenmue 1 & 2, now those are just ugly, glitchy, and pathetic, those would be best getting remake instead.
Bayonetta 1, that one is already in HD in itself, the original Valkyria Chronicles, that one too, the many Wii U ports, those are just ports so many who miss them last gen now finally had a reason to play them, Grandia I & II, would gladly play those again since they are awesome RPG so getting them in HD would be a treat, Langrisser I & II HD, those are nice but the mobile look kinda turn me down still would like to check the gameplay out, but a game like Crystal Chronicles, I say it's between meh and okay cause it's weird playing this on a one screen this time, would had been nice to get a new Crystal Chronicles instead of a port though, the last two (Crystal Bearers and Echoes of Time) that were made are just mediocre at best.
So now Switch had two Final Fantasy games coming and both are just ports, one a mobile port and one a port of a GameCube title, really sad how the Final Fantasy franchise is treated as nothing more than a milkcow nowadays cause that franchise usually makes a fan like me excited. Even the main games are meh at this point, one an action dungeon crawler and the other an action mobile game, where's the turn based Final Fantasy Square, you know the ones that are actually good?
I've been wanting a remaster of Crystal Bearers on Switch for over a year. Hopefully this is a precursor to that.
@NewAdvent
Think it obvious it will happen Thursday
Well that’s one way to get some GameCube titles on the Switch!!
Sweet! Never got to play this yet, looking forward to it.
@Frendo
“Did you read my reply? I mentioned that PS4 still has about 4x more in total than Switch. It's no secret that they want to be the leader on every market which they aren't on the japan market, despite being a japanese company.
It must be hurting for them to seeing that!”
Maybe it does but the only reason games like this are getting released on PS4 is because it makes business sense. You’re anthropomorphising profit-driven corporations.
“Switch will surpass the PS4 lifetime sales in japan during dec-18, no doubt, thanks of 2x Pokemon + Smash Ultimate and perhaps one or more surprise releases by 1st, 2nd or 3rd party during Q4?”
Cool.
“It's also only a matter of time before Switch also is the market leader in USA too.”
I’m not sure about that TBH. They’re both doing very well though.
“Only that a certain console has lifetime sales than others doesn't means that they're the market leader always.”
No but it will be what’s behind games like this appearing on PS4 and Switch now.
“Switch has been a record breaker seller in many countries, and is like I mentioned outpacing none than PS2!
Why is it a such sensitive matter for many to bringing up Ninty's sales when they loves to bragging constantly about Playstation's sales and been mocking on others poor sales on numerous occasions? I sees that many gets immediately offended by Ninty's success”
You’re the only one who seems offended here. Just because some people disagreed with your conspiracy theories.
“okay I even broken my own promise here about to not talking ill about everyones beloved Sony on a Ninty site.....
I'll not reply any further in this thread, it's silly to trying arguing with Sony fans, since it's IMPOSSIBLE to winning a argument against them, no matter what!”
This is a pathetic response. You got civil responses pointing out reality in response to your conspiracy theories. There’s no need for a hissy fit.
“Just be happy that FF Crystal Chronicle is coming, no matter if it's to Switch or PS4!”
Good advice, that.
@IronMan30
I get that you were joking, but some are deadly serious 😆
@tanookisuit Yeah the PS1 era with Square was....bleak, though that was Square alone before the Enix merger and reformation. It made sense at the time (plus their reliance on CD audio soundtracks and large FMV cutscenes that the N64 couldn't accomodate.) But what I don't get is how that Sony relationship endures like that today in such weird ways.
I've never tried this, nice t be able to. I absolutely loved Crystal Bearers though. Very different obviously.
Man I'd just love a Crystal Bearers 2!
@Frendo Sony brought 10% of Squaresoft after the success of FFVII. That’s why FFVII has never been rereleased outside of mobile ports and the PC. Ditto 8, 9, 10 and 12. Squeenix would rake it in rereleasing all them on Switch/Xbox. But they can’t.
@retro_player_22 Turn based Final Fantasy has moved! Please visit our new locations at Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default. Thank you for understanding!
Nice, I've been wanting to play this but didn't have the requisite cables or friends to get the most out of it. Now one of those two things won't be a problem sigh
I’m happy with this, I didn’t play it at the time and have always been intrigued. I was hoping for any of FF6-10 on switch but I’ve played those so much already that this is more appealing.
@chiptoon I read quite a few mixed reviews on Crystal Bearers before I picked it up but actually I ended up really liking it. The motion controls were kind of annoying but the world was really fun to explore.
@BlueOcean For the old KH and FF games, it gets confusing. FF7 and 8, Sony owns the worldwide publishing rights as they were the publisher outside Japan. They're effectively first party Sony exclusives no less than God of War (outside Japan.)
For FF9, 10, it gets weirder. Sony owns the publishing rights only in PAL territories, while square holds it NA/JP. But is Square willing to do much with those games if they can only sell it in JP/NA but not elsewhere? And are there any clauses in Sony's deal that prevent them from doing it unless they get permission from Sony? We don't know, but we know how tight those Sony contracts were back then given the SNES Play Station debacle.
Sony doesn't explicitly hold rights on KH, though KH2 is 100% square, KH1 is shared with Disney Interactive. Who knows what troubles are involved with making any modifications to that game with Disney involved.
But there's something "back room" "you rub my back" "I know a guy in Kamurocho..." about S-E's behavior with favoring Sony, as though they still cover some of their marketing expenses in exchange for preferential treatment, or offer them better positioning on their platform or....something that keeps S-E unnaturally choosing to sabotage themselves always in Sony's favor.
Not sure if I want this. I remember getting sick of this game pretty quickly back in the day. But I don't know, my tastes in video games have changed. Maybe I'll check it out.
Hoping this leads to a rerelease of the My Life games, those were fun.
@chasttix
Let me clarify: I was specifically talking about Nintendo alone getting the short end of the stick.
@NEStalgia
Thing is, we don't know for sure. I know we have the first three Crash games on Switch, but that's because there's a clear (as day) legal loophole that made it happen.
Kingdom Hearts on the other hand is, from the get-go, as third-party as it can possibly get. There's no "only on PlayStation" claptrap at work, and the franchise itself has appeared more on Nintendo platforms than elsewhere (four games). So why can't 1 and II escape Sony's clutches is beyond me.
Besides, contrary to Bayonetta 2's case, there's never been a clear statement about how - in this case - Sony has financed the KH titles in question. There is one about Dissidia Final Fantasy NT on PS4, as the arcade hardware specifically uses PS buttons and whatnot (similar to Nintendo buttons on the arcade version of Pokkén/Pokémon Tekken), but not a single one concerning Kingdom Hearts.
See? See how much of a failure GameCube was that they not only ported many of its games to Wii (under "New Play Control"), but they're continuing to port its exclusives to successive systems- Wii U and now Switch!!
@NEStalgia: Am I confused? Slightly. My curiosity is more because many people go "ZOMG FF!" whenever the series is mentioned. The classic era seems a little more my speed due to preferring fantasy settings over more modern settings (one reason why I haven't tried Advanced Wars out yet despite enjoying strategy games), plus that description of them highlights more of what I've experienced as of late in the RPG department.
I might just stick with DQ for now since I've finally gotten into the series properly; I just finished DQ V over the weekend. I'll likely try out FF eventually, but there are so many RPGs that I need to try already. XD
This was a very weird game, with its GBA connectivity for multiplayer and bizarre chalice lugging mechanic. I wasn't super impressed when I played it back in the day, and I'm not sure how well it will have aged. Hopefully the remaster will improve things, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.
In a world of multiplayer this seems like a sure hit to make I still have my Prima guide on where all the Moogles are can't wait to start painting Mog.
Also why is Xbox getting snubbed for these games?
@NEStalgia
Btw, i just wonder if there is another way to END the contract between SquareEnix & Sony ?
So, SquareEnix can deliver FF 7 - 13 on Nintendo machine, backstabbing Sony after that.
You know, backstabbing Sony is actually really sweet revenge.
I'm confused. The original was developed by Game Designers Studio, and the development funded by Hiroshi Yamauchi's own Q Fund, so basically the original was paid for by Nintendo. Yet the remake comes out on PS4? I guess the funding did not imply any sort of exclusivity deal, or at least not so far into the future, plus Q Fund is no more and so is Yamauchi, so I guess past deals don't matter anymore.
Final Fantasy is slowly making it's way back to Nintendo. FF6 Remake when?
@rjejr Ha. Just got here and I started looking for your post. Crazy timing on our conversation and this release. Guess it won't be GBA compatible, though
@IronMan30 Nintendo totally deserved to lose FF, after being stubborn and sticking with carts versus cds, because Nintendo didn't wanna lose out on that extra money they made off of selling carts to 3rd parties, even though it meant game scope would have to be limited on the system (n64 was more powerful than ps1 in most respects BUT storage space on a cd meant more could go into the game). Pretty soulless business practice right there.
@AlexSora89 It's such a shame that Dissidia NT is Sony exclusive....it shouldn't be, and honestly it's languishing and dying on that platform. Japan doesn't care about it on Paystation and the rest of the world doesn't care about Dissidia NT. Amazing game that would be so perfect for Switch.
But there's that permanent "everything FF is for Sony!" vibe. Moreover KH1 features FF characters that are under Sony's umbrella, namely Aeris. 2 features Seifer. I wonder if there's some complexity where Sony owns rights to those characters or names dating back to them publishing those games, and thus games containing those characters can't leave their sphere?
I mean. It's a GCN remaster, so yay, but meh. I hated this game. Trying to play multiplayer was complicated, and it was virtually unplayable as a single player game.
@NEStalgia
Interesting hypothesis, the character one. After all, Geno in Superstar Saga (GBA version) was added in after negotiations with Square-Enix.
And "Paystation"... that's not a typo, is it?
That cracked me up!
@Tyranexx Yeah, honestly, FF is DQ for Westerners is a fair description.
Don't get me wrong, I love the FF series, even the new ones in a lot of ways, but like everything S-E does, it's always a mixed barrel of disappointment and joy these days. Where DQ is straight forward fantasy in a consistent world, FF tries to always reinvent itself. That can be a good thing as you always get a new world out of it. It can be a bad thing because when they find something that works they can't do much with it.
The actual fantasy ones are 1-3 (NES) 4-6 (SNES), 9, 12. I'm not sure if 1-3 were ever actually officially localized or not. The SNES ones were (and were confusingly called FF1, 2, 3 (So FF4=FF1, FF6=FF3 on original hardware. I think they've rectified that for the remasters though, so FF4=FF4 on the mobile/VC/PSN versions now IIRC but if you're ever looking at actual SNES carts it's a mess!
9 as I mentioned remains my favorite. Equal parts old style, new style, fantasy, unforgettable locales, and a throwback to what it used to be in the modern form one last time. 12 on PS2 tried to go back to fantasy....and it did...but it was a little bland and forgotten after 10.
10 was.....neither tech nor high fantasy. It was sort of mythology mixed with fantasy? Maybe a little bit of the Odyssey to it's undertones. That's a decent one (10-2 the sequel turns a main character into a pop idol and has a skill tree consisting of the "DressSphere......" )
7 is the famous steampunk one. 8 is....how do I even describe it. "Gunblades".....the weapons are "gunblades"....that's really the best description for a whole game that everyone lives in dome cities. 11 is MMO, 13 is....the first half is steampunk on rails with weird crystal mythologies. The second half is....Guar Plains....or Gormott in XC terms 15....it's just Route 66. The whole freaking game is on Route 66. You start at a 50's gas station. I'm not joking. I wish I were, but I'm not It's both better than 13, but also it's a worse FF than 13 as it ditches the turn based battles and "JRPG" mechanics entirely.
If you ever were to try a "real" FF, and you prefer Fantasy, I'd strongly recommend giving 9 a try. Even if you hate the rest of FF you'll probably like 9 with a mix of great story, environments, and traditional battles (If you try it be warned the opening chapter is slow and boring. It suddenly gets better after.) 4 (remaster) is also a good bet. It's not nearly as story focused as 6 onward, more like Octopath or BD.) There's a pseudo HD remaster of 9 for PS4. The prerendered backdrops will never be HD but they did a good job of scaling it. You'll need a Playstation for anything between 7-10. The 4 remaster has appeared on Wii VC I think. 10 or 12 might suit you as well but moreso 9.
Or just play the Route 66 Diablo like 15 on Switch?
@Anti-matter There's always a way to end a contract but...who can outspend Sony on trying it?
@AlexSora89 Not a typo....well it started as a typo then remained as a Freudian slip
I wonder if it will have online play. Would be cool.
@NEStalgia You're a little confused on your Final Fantasy history. FF1 on the Famicom was brought to the west on the NES. FF2 and FF3 for the Famicom were not.
FF4 on the Super Famicom made it to the west as FF2 on the Super Nintendo. FF5 was not brought over, but FF6 was as FF3.
Then FF7 made it over on the Playstation, and since then, they've stuck with the original numbering on everything, even when re-releasing the old FF1-6. But yes, the SNES FF2 and FF3 will be confusing to those that don't know they're actually FF4 and FF6.
Sweet, still have my GameCube copy of this game, but I think I’ll b double dipping.
@DoomTurtle @Tyranexx You see, it's so bad it's even worse than I made it out to be!
@AlexSora89 square haven't made a good game since the SNES.
@aaronsullivan If they make a "Switch Advance" in time for this game I'm counting that as being GBA compatible. 😉
And they owed us this one. 😊
@NEStalgia If they had those deals they existed for the original releases, they are more than expired now. The only thing that prevents a game from going multiplatform is:
a) the rights are shared in two or three parties and there is no agreement: Goldeneye 007;
b) the IP belongs to someone not interested in publishing for other platforms: Ratchet & Clank (IP belongs to Sony);
c) the rights are in limbo (disappeared companies, companies that exist but no longer develop games and don't sell the IP either, companies that split into multiple companies, etc.).
Square Enix owns 100% of Final Fantasy and Disney owns the Kingdom Hearts IP. Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy are today in their hands. Sony is just a "friend" for them, or a business partner or whatever you want to call it and, most importantly, the best-selling console this generation is PS4.
I really think Final Fantasy VII will be multiplatform, but probably not until one year later. This generation is weird because Nintendo released two different consoles and PS4 was more successful than both and Xbox One, but next "generation" could be totally different, like the last one, where the three of them got the same level of success (Wii a bit more and 360 and PS3 the same).
Now generation barriers are blurred and we could see Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy games everywhere. I doubt that PS5 will be as successful as PS4 because both Microsoft and Nintendo learned from their mistakes, and only their mistakes made PS4 so successful.
I had good times with it in my teenage. Will buy it again for Switch. The plague mage was my favorite and it still is.
@BlueOcean Publishing rights don't magically expire over time. The publisher retains their rights indefinitely unless time is specified by an agreement. FF7, 8, Sony owns the publishing rights outside Japan. FF9, 10, 12 Sony owns the publishing rights in PAL territories. That doesn't expire unless the original agreement specified for it to expire, and Sony had no reason to specify an expiration to a dependent Squaresoft of the 1990s.
KH, that ones a bigger riddle. Maybe it's S-E, maybe it's Disney, or maybe it does involve the use of characters from the above games that Sony owns distribution rights to. Remember, distribution rights is Sony's core business. They are the MPAA and RIAA. They know what they're doing when it comes to tight contracts. If Square could have done so they'd have put those games on iOS a decade ago. There's clearly a rights conflict and Sony (or Disney) are the only parties that could conflict. Obviously the new games are all multiplate, the very old games are multiplate, it's those Sony-published 1990's era FF games, and the related KH games that seem withheld. The FF games truly are Sony locked (at least in some regions. It's up to S-E if a JP or JP+NA release is something they want to do...assuming they have that leeway.) KH is a weirder case and it's only speculation as to what the holdup is there. If it has to do with character use from Sony controlled games, if it's Disney being a pain, or if they just don't see a market for KH 1 & 2 (which seems silly with KH3 looming on other platforms and a bundle on PS.)
@NEStalgia But you don't know anyway, you are just speculating, the logical thing is to think that Sony has nothing to say because they don't own anything regarding Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts. I am sure that the agreements don't say anything about possible remasters or re-releases or anything like that and that contract is very likely expired, law contemplates this kind of things and Sony wouldn't dare to sue Square Enix while moving through a grey area. The only thing that stands the test of time is ownership, that's why Nintendo renews theirs even if nobody else was ever involved.
Who would have thought that Xbox One would be getting Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts? In a few years we'll see remakes and remasters everywhere, including the "untouchable" ones.
@Dang69 Yep and they did the same with the GameCube, they didn't want to pay for using DVDs and so they used smaller discs and thus some games required to switch discs, same with Wii U, they didn't want to pay for BDs, a Wii U disc is basically a BD; same with Switch and its original SD-like cartridges... Nintendo always wants to control everything even if it means that it's more expensive, more limited, worse for the user, etc.
@NEStalgia I was referring to ports of the older games like Final Fantasy I-X, I rather get those onto one or two compilations over any FF spinoffs (except the FF Tactics series as that one is fantastic).
oh man this brings back so many memories when i picked this up and then all my friends brought their GBAs with them.
It was always a case of everybody pointing a finger to go in "this or that" direction so i always just took the chalice down the road they didn't point and they'd have to run with me to not die lolz. The boss fights was always a different experience in itself as well with the co op, which was a great thing.
I'm looking forward to doing this again...minus the gba. which kinda takes some of the charm away but at this point i'm not complaining. i still have my GC original if i absolutely have to experience it that way.
This is a bigger better surprise than Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition.
I played this game with my cousins and my friends way back when it came out. I owned all the gamecube-to-GBA cables and my friends and family had GBA SPs. We would love playing this game every time they came over and we had unlocked a bunch of stuff and made it to Mag Mell. In total we had about 123 years and unlocked all the class specific ultimate weapons(Ragnarok, Dream Catcher, etc.)
I'm curious to see what they're going to do with the multiplayer here: Is it gonna be local only, or local + online multiplayer? if it's the latter, I'm am getting this without a second thought. If it's the former.... well I gotta call up some old friends lol.
@Captain_Gonru You'll have to call up your friend and invite him over. Maybe he'll buy himself a new Switch Pokemon bundle for $399.
I'm ok with Square remastering older games. Especially the ones that didn't come to a Nintendo console!
Better have
L O C A L M U L T I P L A Y E R
@BlueOcean kh is uncertain and speculation. Older ff however, Sony had 3 the publishing rights for at least some regions. There's no reason to believe that would have expired, that's not how publishing rights work. Activision still holds the publishing rights for quake 2, not Bethesda for example. Nintendo holds the publishing rights for fantasy Life outside Japan. Now, could we get ff7 in Japan? It ff9 in na? Possibly, if se doesn't mind omitting territories in a rerelease.
Finally, online co-op! At least I can play it as intended now.
This is pretty cool, and it's great to online co-op supported. If only there was crossplay....If only, Sony if only.
@NEStalgia
"Activision still holds the publishing rights for quake 2, not Bethesda for example. Nintendo holds the publishing rights for fantasy Life outside Japan. Now, could we get ff7 in Japan?"
Quake 2 publisher: Activision / Bethesda Softworks (PC)
Final Fantasy VII: PS, PS4, Windows, iOS and Android.
@BlueOcean ahh yeah i did neglect to say console rights .
@NEStalgia: Thanks for the detailed explanation! The ones that I see praised the most are 4, 6, 7, 9, and 12. I'm not discounting the series by any means - obviously it has its fans - but I think I'll wait a bit longer before playing one of them.
@Tyranexx The good thing about Final Fantasy is that you can start playing any game because they are not related unless for some common mythos and concepts and of course the name of the magic spells which makes all of them less confusing overall. Obviously, sub-sequels like Final Fantasy X-2 are directly connected to the main game, in this case X.
You can start with FFXV which has become a great game and you can play that on Xbox/Windows/PS4. You can also play the Crystal Chronicles remake if you only have Switch. I enjoyed it on GameCube, it's charming and different but limited. You could also start with any of the classic ones available almost everywhere. For instance, VI is included in SNES Classic Mini and it's considered the best 2D FF game.
You'll find brilliant soundtracks, beautiful visuals, touching stories and solid gameplay in most of them.
@Tyranexx "The ones that I see praised the most are 4, 6, 7, 9, and 12".
And X! One of my favourite games ever! X-2 is "skippable" though.
I want it now - amazing news and Vesperia is January, brill because Xmas was getting packed with JRPG goodness, too much to play and little time
@BlueOcean: Ironically the numbering used to be a barrier for entry in my case since I had assumed that numbered games like FF and DQ were related plotwise (sorta like the confusing net that is Kingdom Hearts) until an acquaintance that's into DQ explained otherwise.
Barring a Windows laptop (mine isn't really built for gaming tbh), I don't currently own any of those platforms. I'd like to get a Switch and a PS4/5 eventually, but for now I'm gonna wait a bit.
Thanks for your input! I'd forgotten to list 10 earlier.
@Tyranexx You are welcome. If you have waited this long you can wait until the next consoles (and ports) are announced: Switch Pro, Xbox Two, PS5...
Kingdom Hearts is so complicated and yet so simple. The main concepts are abstract. The best game to understand the series is Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, which is also the first chronologically (excluding mobile game X which takes place earlier).
Kingdom Hearts games are connected and some share characters, but if you understand Birth by Sleep you'll understand everything else in the series, because the particular stories of each character are secondary.
Kingdom Hearts III will be released so many years after II (14 years!! with handheld releases in between) that I am sure that it will include an intro explaining what has happened before III (the last game in the chronology).
Of all the Kingdom Hearts games before III, the most important to play is Birth by Sleep.
Of all the Final Fantasy games, you can play any, preferably one of the best.
Funny this is coming to PS4.
Anyway, I can play this on Dolphin on PC so not something I ever "lost"
Mixed emotions. I was really excited when I played this on the GCN but the cost to fun ratio was off. You needed 4 GCN to GBA cables, 4 GBAs, and someone from the team who was willing to carry the jar thing. So only three people really enjoyed at a time.
It was fun but for what you had to spend to get a 4 player game going, it wasn't worth it. If they fix that then it wouldn't be a big problem.
@BlueOcean: I'm hoping to score a Switch in a few months after I get my backlog whittled down a bit more, particularly on my Wii U. I'm still accumulating DS and 3DS games, so it'll be awhile yet before I can put those systems to bed. XD
I'll keep your suggestions for Kingdom Hearts in mind. It's a series that you'd think I would have gotten into ages ago since I like both Disney and RPGs, but I wasn't even aware the series existed until around the time II came out. I only owned handheld systems of any sort as a kid (mostly Nintendo) and didn't have regular access to any of Sony's systems other than a set of cousins who owned a PS2. RPGs weren't a genre they had in their library, unfortunately. They mostly had sports games (meh), some Guitar Hero, a little GTA, and my second favorite video game version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
I love The Crystal Chronicles series this is awesome news.
Loved this game but never could do multiplayer. With the need for 4 GBA and cables. Now I can play it with my kids. Hells yeah!!
@Captain_Gonru So I finally got around to watching the trailer. Does it look like there will be one central on the TV screen and everybody plays on their own Switch, or normal online multiplayer, b/c to me, and I've never played it before, it just looks like normal online multiplayer, not on both the TV and GBA like the original. My impression of the original game was 1 wide out view on the TV, zoomed in on the GBA screens for each player.
If it worked where I could play on the TV and my kids connect in handheld to play on their screens - should they ever own their own Switch - that would be the best scenario. But since it's also on the PS4 I'm guessing they just turned this into a normal online multiplayer game, maybe split screen on PS4 as well, which is nothing at all like how the original game worked. As far as I know, since I never played it at all, not even a demo.
I might pick this up on sale, probably not dropping a full eighty though.
i didn't understand wii point back when it came out but i'd love another chance to get my life as a dark lord
@Frendo
Could be true, could be a conspiracy, but you're surely not lying. I wasn't going to say anything really, but since it's being brought up I will. As it surely is kinda strange how bent out of shape some of these so-called "unbiased gamers" get when it comes to putting those nasty Fanboys in their place, but conveniently only seem to call out what they deem as the Nintendo ones. I mean, you'll have dudes swallowing move controllers and pretty much writing manifestos, adverts & sales pitches fior sony & their products. Straight up shilling & fanboying. And yet there's suddenly quiet as dead Church mice in those instances LOL.
And yeah, strangely enough it does happen more often than not on some of the video game boards. If you even dare leave a comment saying you're not interested in sony, a big fan of their consoles/games you'rebeing called out of your name, your choices questioned to an infinite degree, and so forth. Yet nary a damn thing said to the haters, trolls and possible sony Fanboys who have nothing but negativity towards Nintendo. Lmao And often enough on a Nitendo centric site no less.
And maybe, just maybe I could swallow that I'm just a gamer and I hate fanboyism so I call it out bull$#!* if it wasn't so obviously that. However, when it only (and I mean only) seems to happen with some of these people when it comes to Nintendo fans, it's time to cut the chit. Like I said you'll have folks straight up D riding & publicly fellating sony and they won't say anything to them.
Also, if these are Nintendo Fanboys because they'prefer and want to talk about Nintendo on a Nintendo Centric site, then what the hell would you call some of these jokers here that seem to just wanna troll, criticize & mock Nintendo & these folks that are pretty much where they should be? I'm not going to get to calling out names and everything as it doesn't matter that much, but I can definitely see where you were coming from. Even if it's not something I totally agree with
@Ryu_Niiyama
That's a very good question. Even if they don't have a strong presence in Japan, they have a pretty good presence in other markets like Europe and the United States. I mean if it's all about da money like some are quick to quip, I see no reason to snub the XBOX & the 40 million or whatever potential buyers on that platform. There's no carts to CDs excuse to use here.
@Tyranexx go grab a SNES classic and play final fantasy vi as it is the easiest way nowadays of playing one of the series masterpiece. This one is a spin off that has almost nothing to do with the main series (I would argue that this is not even a jrpg)
We really need a new FFT. I'd be fully satisfied with a Remake of FFTA (my all time turn based tactical game ever!), it doesn't have to be completely new.
@Glitchling78 I had a very similar experience. Reviews were so mixed. And it does seem o be one of those games where you either get or you don't.
I especially loved the music.
@liveswired
The Kingdom Hearts series, The World Ends With You, and Dissidia Final Fantasy say hi.
@NEStalgia
"Paystation"... I'm still chuckling!
@rjejr As others pointed out, the game played in realtime so the second screen was used for inventory management, which is why I always scratched my head why they didn't put this game on Wii U w online play. I am not sure how they will have it work the same way on PS4/Switch unless they are going to use a mobile app to get the second screen functionality.
Regardless, I am glad they are remaking it. Despite the hate it sometimes gets, it was an interesting story. I am looking forward to playing it again when I get around to picking up a Switch.
@Balta666: I've been on the fence in terms of getting a SNES Classic since I already have some of the games I'm interested in that can be found on it. FF6 and Secret of Mana are making me seriously consider getting it, however....
@BlueOcean @Tyranexx Kingdom Hearts has a story? News to me, I thought it was incoherent self important drivel. Don't play KH for story. It's a disaster, and even if you manage to make sense out of it is still bad from any angle. Just play it for the cool gameplay and worlds. Like any crossover, really. KH1 had a sensible story. After that, Xehanort! Ansem! Joshua! Random other characters I don't give a fig about! Just show me Sora, Seifer, Aeris, and Goofy all chillaxing in Cinderella's Castle and give me fun battles. (Also why does DDD seem so much worse now than when I first played it and loved it?)
@Tyranexx Yeah based on what you've described, you'd like 4, 6, and 9. If you're into old skool RPG design 4 and 6 will be your favorites. If you like mixing that with more of an "experience" 9 might come out on top. 12 is sort of in between, but for classic tastes I'd rank it just below the above 3. 7....it's classic, it's fantastic (moreso in its own day), it's memorable. But it's also...weird, and very steampunk. Cool battle system though (why oh why oh why do they never let go of the FF4 Jobs system and never bring back the FF7 Materia system??) Upgrading the gems and plopping them in the sockets for each character made so much more sense than grinding each job on each character so your 8 characters have to be treated as 64 different jobs to upgrade (Octopath 64?)
@NEStalgia Yes, it has a story and it is a deep one. As I said before you, the stories about the characters are secondary.
@Darknyht "why they didn't put this game on Wii U w online play"
13 million Wii U sold. But I still feel like it should have released w/ Wii U on the TV and 3DS as the GBA. Something should have besides SSB4.
I feel like had Wii U sold 50m it would have seen a lot more games. And Zelda BotW would have had the interactive map on the Gamepad, or at the very least inventory management for clothes and food. And Splatoon 2 would have been on Wii U. Maybe even Super Mario Odyssey. And Pikmin 4 if it exists. And Mario Kart 8 and Pokken Tournament. Oh wait.
I'm guessing this game has no 2nd screen, it's just normal online like any other game. But maybe they'll surprise us.
@BlueOcean It's pretentious and that's putting it kindly. It's one of those high minded "concepts" rather than narratives that seems wonderful in the minds of it's creators, it's most rabid fans and the kinds of "creatives" that show up at Cannes.
The trouble is as a pure FF game it might have even worked. Once you start throwing it in with Donald Duck in the Hunchback's Notre Dame, and then fill in the high minded Cannes nebulous story between it loses cohesion and becomes a mess. Save the high minded story for a game about high minded story, and don't try to make it make sense with Pinocchio's Pleasure Island.
I mean I see what you're saying, and that kind of "inner self" psychobabble story has its place, but the mix of themes in KH isn't really the right place for it. I actually wish it meshed well and you could view these Disney worlds through that serious lens, but you really can't. I love the series for what it is, but not so much what it wishes it could be.
@rjejr Understand the 13m, but when they were still attempting to show the uniqueness of the console this game (along with Four Swords Adventure and Pac-Man Vs.) all seemed like pretty low hanging fruit to remaster. The original was published by Nintendo so you would think they could have gotten it done.
But then there are lots of things that would have used the gamepad better that they never seemed to try. Blue Ocean could have been interesting using the main screen for a submersible cockpit view (with controls and windows) and the gamepad to control a detachable robot camera to explore shipwrecks/hidden areas. A Blaster Master style game where TV is Mech view and gamepad turns into human FPS view. Silent Scope style shooter using gamepad as scope to zoomed out TV view. But then I am pipe dreaming a concept that is probably never to return.
Anyways, in the end I am glad it is getting another chance. I really enjoyed it on the Gamecube (although I was never able to play the multiplayer mode).
@Tyranexx @BlueOcean @NEStalgia I will say here what I said elsewhere, that whenever a game series requires multiple gaming sites to write articles explaining what they call an "overly complex" story then there probably is an "overly complex" story involved. Kingdom Hearts was an enjoyable game, but it's story is about as coherent as Plan 9 from Outer Space's cinematography is coherent.
@Darknyht LOL. I agree, but sssshhh, you don't want to upset the "but the lore!" crowd that still believes Dark Souls and Bloodborne has a story.
@Darknyht @NEStalgia: I admittedly have considered picking up Recoded on the DS off of SE's website before just to see what all the fuss was about...until I read some old reviews and impressions. Someone linked me an interesting video once about how to explain the plot (some footage from the House of Mouse animated series where they're looking for a key or something). I know a little about the series (mainly the relationship between the Heartless and Nobodies, plus keyblades look cool), but the plot seems a little...all over the place. Maybe once I invest a little time into the series, everything will click?
Also, as a general recommendation to all RPG fans, I highly encourage looking into CollegeHumor's Every JRPG Ever video. It's pretty spot-on!
@Darknyht Not getting a new Blue Ocean game in HD was criminal enough, but having the Wii Fit U scuba underwater minigame was rubbing salt in the wound.
@Tyranexx It clicked for me, the most important things about Kingdom Hearts are really simple.
@rjejr Not worse than justifying ditching Wave Rave because they included a mini game in Wii Sports Resort. I'll never forget those words.
@BlueOcean I'm sensing a theme. And that theme was failure. Maybe the Switch can rectify some of those wrongs.
Never tried it but looks pretty cool 🤔
Wow, this is amazing news for anyone who didn’t get a chance to play this game on the GameCube. I remember the opening song (which I still sing to this day) when you first start the game and it’s a beautiful song to hear. Though, I anticipated this game when it was released, it was hard to comprehend after playing for a bit that this WAS NOT A PROPER FINAL FANTASY GAME! The crazy escapades of carrying around the miasma urns through the game just made it too repetitive for to me to continue.
@6ch6ris6 can’t help but think of this
I grinded the heck out of this game in the GameCube and got all the best equipment, but in the end I don't think the concept of the game was actually that good.
The chalice mechanic frankly, just sucks.
Especially in multiplayer, nobody actually wants to carry the chalice, and it feels like you're punishing whoever you make do it.
I loved this game so much but how will local multiplayer work?
