Yesterday, Sega teased a huge announcement. We've seen part of that in the form of Sega AGES for the Switch and the reveal of a Mega Drive Mini console, but there's more: the Japanese company is remastering Shenmue and its sequel.
These two classic titles originally launched on the Dreamcast and are beloved by countless gamers - but sadly Sega has decided that only the PS4, Xbox One and PC are capable of hosting them. At the time of writing, Sega hasn't started that the double pack is Switch-bound.
We can't see any technical reason why the Switch couldn't join the party, but we're no experts. If we could be slightly optimistic for a second, perhaps Nintendo wants to reveal the Switch version itself during a Direct broadcast?
How do you feel about Ryo and company skipping Nintendo's console? Will you just play it on one of the other formats instead? Tell us by petting kittens and playing old arcade games in the comments section below. Oh, and watch out for sailors.

i actually dont quite understand why there is no plans for a Switch port
It is surprising that this game is skipping the switch. Now the comments are going to be full of conspiracy theories of Sony paying Sega to keep it off of Switch.
It's just plain ridiculous. Another case of people not wanting more money, I suppose.
Sony must have paid SEGA to keep it off the Switch.
That’s fine by me Sega, I’ll just play the originals on my Dreamcast.
No Outrun 3? No sale.
Give it another six months and it will be annouced for switch.
Doesn't matter for me.
Not a fan of that game.
Beside, remember if SEGA is still have Rivalry feeling with Nintendo. They will choose Sony / Microsoft to compete with Nintendo.
I played the first one on my Dreamcast, and thought it was pretty bad. but not updating to the 2nd most popular console in your homeland, seems short-sighted.
I just wish SEGA were still a game console maker (ignoring the new retro console) - the Dreamcast was one of my favourites, and I miss having SEGA in the mix.
Will this get announced for Switch in a Direct at same time as Spyro?
Suck. Would get this day one, really enjoyed it on the dreamcast. Fingers crossed they are holding back for a Ninty Direct announcement.
That didn't take long for the NDF conspiracy theorists to show up.
It's a 3rd party game, of course it isn't coming to the Wii2, I mean Switch.
While this is very disappointing, I have waited so long for a re-release/remaster that I’m getting it for PC anyway. If a Switch version is absolutely not happening.
I have to say that this is disappointing. Looks like I'll be keeping a Dreamcast hooked up
Evil Sega with their disappointing business practices. I really didn't have my hopes up. The horrible AGES trash and no Shenmue on Switch. Oh Sega, you never cease to let me down.
Well Nintendo paid to keep the physical SNK Heroines exclusive to Switch, so this is only fair, right?
Shenmue 3 hasn't been announced for Switch, so it's not crazy to think that this would miss out as well.
Also Shenmue 2 was exclusive to Xbox in the west, so they might figure they have a fan base there as well.
It's not really that baffling, if you think about it.
"Sony must have paid SEGA to keep it off the Switch."
Nintendo and Sega have a good relationship so I think it will come to Switch. This has been pointed out before so its not a new theory but I think Nintendo intentionally hold off on announcing releases unless they are in control of it (either via Directs or on their Twitter/Youtube)
Thinking about this, it could mean many things. Shenmue 3 is defo not coming to Switch (so no point letting people get in to the series) or maybe there are still logistics of collections going on cards (like size and cost). I feel sorry for the folk wanting to play it, but this is one franchise I've always thought over hyped.
no Jet Set radio? then i don't care
I've only ever watched my brother play the first game, and all I can remember of it was that the highschool girls were extremely rude!
Language warning.
@Fight_Teza_Fight A common misconception, Shenmue 2 was only exclusive to Xbox in North America, not the west as a whole. It came out on both Dreamcast and Xbox in Europe, and we're the "west" too.
Later release to take advantage of people who'd pay for it on console and pay for it on the go.
I'm hoping Okami HD will kill it on Switch for these publishers to take note that Switch would be worth releasing on day one.
@Menchi187 I see. Never owned an Xbox or a Dreamcast.
Still the point stands. Sega probably reckon it has a fan base for Shenmue on Xbox.
@Fight_Teza_Fight It doesn't stand at all actually
I just think the Switch has caught developers off-guard with its success. This was probably planned years ago and the Switch has only proven itself in the last year.
This is why we are seeing developers scrambling to get Switch ports done, like Wolfenstein 2 and countless indie devs announcing ports almost every day after realising they are missing the bandwagon if they don't act.
I think decisions being made now though for future games will include Switch from the start. (if it's capable of running said game)
Kinda silly to not be putting this on Switch.
The overpaid, overweight and bold CEO strikes again....
@Fight_Teza_Fight I see it more likely to be that PS4 and XB1 are similar enough that the only reason there wouldn't be a XB1 version for a game on PS4 is Sony exclusivity. The Switch doesn't have that luxury as Nintendo went for hybrid rather than powerhouse.
As for Shenmue 1+2 in particular, I think either Nintendo's saving it for a Direct like how the Spyro situation is looking to be or development for the HD remasters started before the Switch was massively popular.
@Anti-Matter Yeah, 20 years after SEGA left the console market they will not be rivalling Nintendo.
And Sega too.
Why? Switch wouldn't be able to run this? I don't believe it.
I think I'd much prefer to have all three games on the same system if the third game isn't coming to the Switch anyway, so I'll be picking this up on PS4.
@RazumikhinPG big business hates money. Not since GameCube has there been such potential in a console release. Sad times. I
@YamAsereht lmao
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
It'll come to switch. They all coming crawling back
Should see their Twitter announcement. It's absolutely blown up with Switch requests... I love it.
A lot of these companies have this false image of us westerners, because Nintendo hasn't had a viable console platform since the Cube. But Switch is slowly and surely changing that. Twitter post by twitter post they see the high-level outcry of demand. Consistently they see it.
Makes sense since 3 isn't coming to Switch. Never played these when they were new, but they seem to make more sense on Xbox to me.
Ugh, if it is coming to Switch they should announce it at the same time! They both fit of a cart, so no need for downloads.
But, it's probably not going to come to the Switch. Thank god I have a PS4 for all 3 games
@Atariboy outrun 3 would have been awesome. Loved outrun 2: coast to coast. Not many games like that anymore.
Guess we have to wait for horizon chase.
A bit disappointed, but I do remember these games being a bit joyless, like going to work.
Also guessing they’d need a pretty big memory card in that cartridge...
Hope there's a switch version coming later on.
@Menchi187
well that's definitely a dumb take on it.
just goes to show that no 3rd party wants to work. poop out something that works on a low end PC for the twins and give PC folks a higher res.
easy peasy. that's all these publishers are about anymore.
I think Nintendo paid sega to have it on the other platforms. This makes the most sense
Am not sure if I'd buy Shenmue anyway. Does seem a bit boring but guess I've never played it before. Would like to know what so many people enjoy about the game.
Surprising and disappointing. Hopefully they announce it at the next nintendo direct. Great series, but I rather have it for switch than PS4 or XBOX.
@wazlon
yeah, i couldn't care less about it but it SHOULD be on switch since well; it's old and the switch can run old stuff pretty well.
Not interested either way.
Hopeful and optimistic for switch version 😆
Not buying this on any other platform than Switch. C'mon, Sega!
@Menchi187 do you enjoy being the proverbial idiot now that your other compatriot is gone?
@Menchi187 I like how you call out nintendo fans that make baseless claims and then you proceed to make a baseless claim by saying that the switch is a wii2.
Birthday and Xmas come early! Made up. 😃😃😃😃
Game size will probably be huge so to expensive to put on a game card.
I understand the nostalgia but when I fire these games up on my old Dreamcast I always get bored quickly. Even today’s games that only score 6 to 7 on metacritic give you more fun.
I will pick this up for my PS4!
@Ensemen Plenty of basis for it.
Underpowered hardware.
Gimmicked controllers that are basically wiimote 2.0
Gimmicked accessories like labo and the wii balance board.
Shovelware/mobile ports of games.
Little to no 3rd party support.
@KJW90 Yes, it's a conspiracy between Microsoft, Sony, and Valve to crush the Switch! I knew it all along!
I'm going to wait until E3 to jump to any conclusions, because Nintendo likes to announce stuff as its own events.
@Fight_Teza_Fight The only thing I can take from your post is that Switch owners somehow "deserve" this because Nintendo paid for SNK Heroines physical exclusivity which... is entirely beside the point? Seriously, how does SNK Heroines have ANYTHING to do with this, and why would that make Shenmue 1 and 2 skipping Switch "fair?"
Never really got the hype with this game in the first place. Was gonna pick it up if it came to Switch, but seeing as it's not. Think I'll pass.
Unfortunately, it’s stories like this that made me buy a PS4 instead of Switch a few months ago. Well, that and the price of console and games. It’s a shame, as like others have said, there doesn’t appear to be any technical reason these games couldn’t be hosted on the Switch. Whilst things are certainly better on the third party front with the Switch, it’s still far from ideal. Hopefully the tide continues to change in the right direction.
@Menchi187 That would be true if Sega is not supporting the Switch at all outside of Sonic, but they announced Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Shinning Resonance Refrain for this year, and just yesterday they released Fotball Manager, so your argument doesn't work.
I'm just happy we're finally getting a rerelease. I'll pick it up for my PS4 for sure.
Omg I was going to message on yesterday’s post about this that no one should get excited as the switch won’t be included lmao surprise surprise!
This is the thing with any announcements like this switch is going to be left out or get a late release, that’s it, that’s not going to change.
Everyone says power doesn’t matter but if it was more powerful then including us would be way less of a cost and hassle.
We have some good games on switch and some great, but there are not that many yet.
This was no surprise
@Menchi187
"Shovelware/mobile ports of games.
Little to no 3rd party support."
So, what did i bought here ?!
I have Combination of 1st party, 3rd party & Indies !
Tell me if you were delusioning !
Well I understand why they don't. It's already hard on PC emulation let alone on Switch hardware. If it's Dreamcast game with enchanted graphics I can see why it's not a good idea to work on Switch. Nintendo I told you. 4gb ram system memory is not enough! You should've come up with the 8gb editon in the first place... well it is what it is
I could totally understand reporting on Spyro seemingly skipping Switch, but these games really don't have to be reported on like this because this series has no history with Nintendo platforms whatsoever, as far as I'm aware. At this point you might as well report on every game that's not coming to Switch that it's skipping the system.
Hey guess what? God of War, Halo, Jak & Dexter, and what have you, are all not coming to the Switch either! When are you going to report on that?
Really, is there anybody who can give me a good reason why this is news on a Nintendo website?
@Ralizah Nah it was sarcasm. Which the comment section is rife with. Business deals happen. We have no control over them. I do find it weird NL reports on games not coming to Switch, riles up the community and then the game ends up on Switch anyways (Spyro, Crash,...). It just breeds negativity.
It would be a bit different if someone from Sega came out and actually said we're not bringing it to Switch. For all we know this could be a Spyro situation were Nintendo are holding back the announcement.
Or the game might just not come to Switch. Who knows?
@Fight_Teza_Fight Oh, OK. Poe's law in effect.
Yeah, I totally agree, in that case.
Considering the way Nintendo delays announcements, as I said, there's no sense in jumping to conclusions.
And yeah, a game NOT coming to Switch isn't really news, especially when it has no history on Nintendo systems.
@Menchi187 wii2 lol sorely mistaken on that switch is nothing like Wii u in sales lol switch also has games
@Anti-Matter And the wii had Call of Duty at the start too.
@Slim1999 nope
@Ralizah No problem mate. I guess my comment was open to misinterpretation.
I'm not playing these until I know for sure part 3 is finished. Playing these when part 3 could still potentially sucks and incomplete is not something I want to suffer through but if a Switch port is planned in the future, that would be good too.
@Menchi187
I don't need that game you mentioned about at all.
I can live with JUST ONLY Appropriate games (Safe for Kids & Teen), from 1st / 3rd / Indies.
Portal Knights is my Numero Uno (Number 1) Switch game right now, followed by ARMS as Number 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as Number 3.
@Deathwalka wait are we really gonna say that the switch being less powerful is the reason shenmue HD has not been announced for the machine.
A Dreamcast game in HD struggling to run on switch! Whatever you are smoking please can I have some.
@gauthieryannick I think people need to stop with conclusions that every time a third party game is not announced its because Nintendo want to announce themselves.
History should show you that this theory is wrong the majority of times. Yes there have been a few games which have been later confirmed by Nintendo but man on man there is way more that never were.
This theory was used constantly during Wii U period and people ended up looking silly.
@thiz bit.trip runner
@Menchi187
Sorry, but why are you here again? 🤔
I never played these games so i'm picking this up on PC.
Ah well, I'd have like to have finally had a shot to play these two titles...
@Bliquid Probably not. The third game wasn't confirmed for the Xbox either but it's getting the HD collection as well.
@Yosher It makes them money, because people click on the article, vent/whine/make up conspiracy theories in the comments, and fight amongst themselves. It's actually quite fun to watch!
@RedMageLanakyn
Well, hoping for a Quarrel from each others is Not a good thing to do.
Better we discuss with them nicely.
@Menchi187 aw come on it's always the same from those switch haters.
I mean yeah sure it is underpowered for a home console but it's not for a handheld console. But yeah next you're gonna tell me that the switch is in fact a homeconscole first and a hybrid second for whatever made up reason because you just can't admit that the switch is a great console and millions of people love it.
And of course the old gimmicks argument. Everything that is innovative and tries to do something different is a gimmick. How can you even say labo is a gimmick? Just because you don't like it? You do realize that this thing is made for kids huh?
The only point with some truth to it is the poor third party support. I'll give you that. But you do realize that all consoles do have shovelware and mobile ports?
BOO!
i'll get the pc versions for all three anyways.
People are whining about not getting 2 more old games. SONY already has another new 95 metacritic hit on their hands on the same month as a new Yakuza also comes out. After 3 months with a top AAA game release on each.
Nintendo has again more rehashed games, mobile nonsense and cardboard. Yeah not getting even more old games from SEGA is what people should be complaining about. 🤔😒
Stupid. I’ll just go pick it up for my Dreamcast then.
It's pretty simple really, it's coming to the PS4 only due to Sony paying the exclusively, like all the other third party stuff. it's nothing new, and still could come to the Switch next year like Crash did.
Please, please, PLEASE tell me people here saying that this collection not coming to Switch because Sony is paying Sega off even though it's clearly coming to PC and Xbox are satire.
@MonkeyKing That really isn't an unreasonable guess. Companies do do that from time to time.
@Agramonte are you for real? The last PS
4 exclusive with a score above 90 was 2 years ago. Stop trolling articles with irrelevant information
@Bliquid shenmue 3 isn't coming to xbox one, it's only on ps4 and pc. And yu suzuki said it's not the end of the story http://www.siliconera.com/2018/02/28/yu-suzuki-whether-shenmue-iii-will-open-ending/
Hey, at least the Switch is getting Genesis games for once, that's more I can say about the Wii U.
@Agramonte Is not like PS4 took more than a year to get a 90+ exclusive and it also got a lot of PS3 rehashed games until like 2016.
@Bondi_Surfer Um, no, because the people at Sega and the people at Nintendo are actual adults.
How about more about games Switch got/ will get instead of what its not getting?
Switch got Ao no kanata Four rythm in Japan a few weeks ago. Switch is getting that A good librarian like a good shepherd in end of July if I remember right. Snack world trejarers gold was released in Japan two days ago.
@BensonUii We covered the news of the announcement - only fair that we cover what that announcement was.
It is surprising but I left the Sega camp many years ago. I have plenty of Sega consoles and games but I ran with Big N.
Very bad not porting it to the Switch. Very bad move SEGA from you. However, it would be AMAZING to have these titles on the Switch.
@gortsi You're factually incorrect.
Oh for goodness sake, Shenmue wasn’t that great to begin with. Go back and play it. Hugely outdated mechanics.
I’d prefer Power Stone tbh. Or Remastered Sonic Adventure games.
@gortsi Persona 5 (93) literally released this time last year & it had Horizon Zero Dawn (89) & console exclusive NieR Automata (88) all within like 6 weeks of each other. Try harder.
Anyways this is what happens when you put out click bait articles. Fosters negativity.
Speaking of the announcement in general...
I was pretty disappointed. The Sonic Adventure games are classics and should be ported to every platform. I’ll buy them every time.
@ClassSonicSatAm
Except it isn't exclusive to Sony
@mailman This isn’t a sign of anything. Take off the tin foil hat and leave the bunker locked for now.
I'm not a stickler for graphics, but did they intentionally start the trailer with a zoom in to the ugliest possible texture?
@Fight_Teza_Fight
Except Persona 5 isn't exclusive to PS4. GOW now gives the PS4 3 metacritic 90+ scoring exclusives.
This is lame. I’ve never had a chance to play these and would have liked to. Oh well I guess.
@Oscarzxn
Is correct, though there are some that find this difficult to accept.
Bloodborne came out when PS4 was 16 months old, a milestone Switch is yet to reach. Every single 90+ rated game PS4 got before that was a ressed-up PS3 game.
I really like the PS4, I got one in late 2014 and now have a Pro. But I don't get why people have to try and rewrite history in an attempt to deride the software situation on the Switch which is very healthy in comparison.
@electrolite77 As much of an exclusive as Breath of The Wild then .
The original still hold up well and the Dreamcast looks excellent through a Hanzo VGA cable: https://youtu.be/u4Hld3ewARk
Skip for me.
I DON'T EVEN CARE, SHENMUE HAS BEEN SAVED, AND I WILL SUPPORT IT THROUGH AND THROUGH!
Let me put on my "Shenmue is getting a remaster" suit. Ye buddy.
@Tao Nah, I check my facts before posting. @Fight_Teza_Fight Persona 5 is a PS3 game. Nier is on PC as well. Horizon is not in the 90s as your mate Agramonte indicated, so I'm guessing you should try harder. Push square is over that way.
Hah, sometimes I feel like Sega doesn't like money.
It is what it is. Looks like I’m playing these on PS4.
A lot of gamers get too riled up over these things. They're just games and a hobby for most anyways.
Not interested if it’s not on it’s way to Switch
@gortsi Why are you being so defensive?
@gortsi I play PC more than anything, also own PS4 and Switch, so I don't particularly care about your little high and mighty Switch circle jerk since I'm not exactly pledging an allegiance to a single platform. You can continue to imply I'm a Sony fanboy all you want, it doesn't make you any more correct.
I'm simply stating, you are factually wrong. Deal with it and move on.
We don't need this port anyway
Why do SEGA continue to dissapoint ???
wonder whats their excuse this time
Sega is apparently having a hard time developing shenmue 3, i have no faith it'll end up on switch, so taking time to port 1 & 2 is pointless.
At this point, you just plain don't like making money if you don't port your game to the Switch. Hottest console on the market and you're not bringing a remastered collection of games to it? Lol, ok then.
@Fight_Teza_Fight not defensive at all, just sick of this guy trolling articles with irrelevant points. Not that this article entices discussion anyway, I don't know why it was worth reporting in the first place. @Tao saying that I'm factually wrong without saying which fact is wrong doesn't really mean much mate, sorry to burst your bubble. Neither do I care about which platforms you own, I don't know why this is brought up.
@umegames Sega has nothing to do with shenmue 3
Is it because the originals were never on a Nintendo console?
I think it's simply is that they are skipping switch because it is cartridge-based.
My money won’t be available on the SEGA.....
Sega is Its Own Worst Enemy almost everything they do seems to be subpar... I mean they're little mini consoles from what I understand pretty crappy compared to the Nintendo mini console.
@Jack_Goetz Exactly. I loved the first two games and it is looking like I will finally have to buy a PS4 to play no.3. I would rather get these on the same system so fingers crossed your save game can carry over. If 1&2 came out on Switch, when you finish them, it would be story over on that console.
@gortsi God of War is currently sitting at 95. As I said, you're factually wrong.
It's still a week till its release, true, but reviewers have already gotten their review copies and Sony have allowed reviews to go up, so it's fair game.
Let me guess, you only follow user reviews, right?
Though lets ignore that for now, if we're going by your cherry picking logic of what does and doesn't count, the Switch has only a single exclusive game in its library that is rated above 90%: Mario Odyssey. Practically everything else 90+ is a Wii U game, which as you said for Persona 5 being on PS3, means by your own logic they don't count. The rest are multiplatform, which as you said for Nier Automata, don't count.
Suddenly the Switch seems like a waste of money, having only 1 high rated exclusive game in its entire library to justify the £300+ pricetag...Maybe you should think more before creating self defeating rules and regulations, because you're kinda making the Switch look bad.
And why do I name platforms? Well, since you're going to defend your opinions by assuming my preferred platform, "Push square is over that way", I'm just going to throw out that no, not everybody that disagrees with you is a mindless fanboy of a bit of hardware.
Remember when Sonic Mania wasnt listed for NX but Forces was?
Give it time maybe....
@Tao GOW I'm sure is fantastic but it's not even out yet like you said. And I didn't create the arbitrary rule, the troll I was responding to mentioned 90+ games. Personally I don't care about scores or platforms too much, what's the difference between and 88 and a 92 at the end of the day? If we follow that logic nobody would have bought a PS4 until Bloodborne came out or a Switch until Odyssey.
@Menchi187
Well to be fair, the clowns complaining about the supposed complainers seemed to have set their clocks MUCH earlier. As they were much more at the ready.
should be switch bound. it's only a hd remaster. switch could easily run that! it can run doom yes!? gutted. will wait and see if they announce switch version I'm day one. if not I will pick on my xbone or ps4 at some point
@kobashi100
Ha ha Whatever it is, it does seem to be hella good!
@HappyMaskedGuy yeah I can't stand games like that, I know that there's a lot of people that like games like that but I can't stand it, to me it's like super boring.
I'll just play it on PS4. One day, hopefully soon, Nintendo will both, give and get respect again. I stay a strong N supporter but I also recognize the problems.
No Switch version, then it's no buy for me.
Sega didn't give us phantasy star online 2, they can burn for all I care.
@Fight_Teza_Fight
Yep. That's entirely fair.
Ill just get it for steam with steam.
@Tao
Yeeeeeah, and yet In ALL of that nonsense your going on about, you STILL forget that the Switch had a +90 game (made STRAIGHT BY THEM & not 3rd party or paid for to be made exclusive to their box) in it's library in less than a year and didn't have to wait over a year plus for someone to make a game that was 90 + Metacritic on their system. They wouldn't even have had that 90 + game on their box if it wasn't for them funding the bloodborne devs for the exclusivity. Hell, at that point they would have been lucky to get +80 Metacritic games that weren't third-party reliant or the indies that sony fans are belittling again because they finally got games worth playing. So even in all of that ranting, there's that.
@gameboy1975 Good decision. @Agramonte is amazingly bad at trolling, which is almost unthinkable given how often he does it; you'd think he'd have had enough practice by now to be at least decent. Save your response for someone worthy of it.
Meh, I already own a Dreamcast.
I loved playing Shenmue on Dreamcast! I’ve been waiting for a remaster too. I was hoping it would release on the Switch for the portability factor. Wishful thinking that it might be on the Switch at a later date. 😀
@Fight_Teza_Fight
To elaborate, I've got a Switch, a PS4 Pro and an XB1X. They're all serving different purposes and all great.
I genuinely think a lot of the moaning about Switch is ridiculous. For a 13-month-old system it's got a brilliant software lineup at the very least comparable with the other formats in the same timeframe. It isn't going to get all the multiplats by design and doesn't need to.
Funny thing is I remember defending the PS4 in 2014 from endless criticism regarding its lack of exclusives as they had everything else right. It took PS4 time to build up the library of quality exclusives it has now and Nintendo will do the same for Switch. That's what they are good at even if they struggle with third-party support. Switch having a load of quality exclusives is the safest bet around.
I've been around the houses enough times now that I know it takes time, theres no point rewriting history because someone will metaphorically slap you down and unlike some posters on here (not you), I've no desire to say any old rubbish to get attention on the internet. 😉
Who cares? Shenmue is overrated garbage that should be despised for popularizing QTEs. If this game hadn't happened, maybe we wouldn't have David Cage's trash today.
I really hope all these games that seem to be skipping Switch isn't just Nintendo holding back announcements.
I hate constantly having to ask "is this coming to Switch", all the time just because Nintendo can't play ball with other companies and has to reveal everything themselves. I'd rather just know one way or the other when it's 1st revealed.
@Danrenfroe2016 It’s like a lot of games from back then. Particularly those on PS, Xbox and Dreamcast.
I just finished Crash Bandicoot N Sane trilogy, and I am genuinely shocked that people consider these games anything more than okay.
Undercooked world, poor character design and a completely incoherent control scheme. Not to mention the fact that the same 10 or less levels are just regurgitated over and over and over.
Utter tripe.
Shenmue is a mess. And Sega remaking it will be nothing less than ridiculous. Just wait and see. Sub 65 on metacritic, guaranteed.
less chance people double dip on the Switch if games release at the same time
Too bad. I wouldn’t have minded playing these on the switch. Oh well I guess I will pick them up on steam when they eventually go on sale
@Superzone13 Considering the combined customer base of PS4, Xbox, and PC is well over 100 million, i'd say they're financially ok with not porting to a system of under 15 million.
I owned both on Dreamcast and TBH they are both tediouly slow and dull games. The ideas were better than the implementation. I really don't get the love for them. I got more enjoyment usiing the in-game gashapon and arcade machines than the actual game.
No big deal. Have a Dreamcast. Not a big deal either way.
Baffled that this is coming to the Xbox One and not the Switch...🤯
@gameboy1975 I doubt you did - but in no way me saying that is an invitation for you to prove me wrong.
Nop - not really. My point still stands - Nintendo needs the NEW Sakura Wars from Sega more than another old port or ancient retro collection. Especially considering what is available on the other boxes in the market.
I've been consistent with my views on the 2018 line-up so far for the Switch - and the fanboys reaction to it has also been consistent. No idea why either would be a surprise at this point.
I'm sorry to hear there may not be Shenmue on Switch. Not necessarily surprised, but this is tge sort of project I'd hoped the console would be attracting by this stage.
Oddly I only heard of Shenmue about 3 years ago when it was exhibited as part of the Games Masters show at the National Museum of Scotland. After a brief play of it I was intrigued. Let's hope these remasters make the jump to Nintendo hardware at some stage.
Right,
This is the second kick in the teeth from sega(no MD collection) and i think it absolutely stinks.
It seems Nintendo are happy letting games come out from all developers and flood the eshop every week, but they want control of their old back catalogue & limit what is released......... which sucks for everone who owns a switch👎
There’s something going on
@kobashi100 [removed]
Thus another reason for the current drought of quality games.
Thus another reason to own another system when you own a Switch.
But come on! Honestly there’s been a Shenmue announcement every 8 months for the past 20 or so years. I wouldn’t believe anything at this point until something hits the store shelves.
@Deathwalka learn the difference between remaster and remake.
Next go and look at the official screenshots released. Have a look @ the textures and tell me it's not a simple Dreamcast port in HD
It's great sega are releasing the games but it's low budget no doubt
@Deathwalka
Folks have ported PS4/Xbox One games thats lotsa more complex than HD Shenmue in a matter of weeks to Switch. SEGA is a kinda lazy company that makes strange business decisions. Thats why Nintendo keeps making consoles today, while SEGA is out of that business and barerly makes any games at all nowadays that makes any marks in sales. They have taken years to make a Dreamcast-port with slightly higher resolution, if you judge by the trailer. And thats just picture resolution, all other aspects of the graphics looks untouched since the Dreamcast-original.
@Deathwalka Let's keep it civil here, no need to be rude.
This is good news, the switch doesn’t need this crappy shovelware.
im pretty sure shenmue will come to the switch. its just that the nintendo switch is a whole different console then the ps4xbox one and pc.
those platforms are easy to produce for, the nintendo switch version there has to be more work done for. its a hybrid system games are on cardridges, and the system is less powerfull also it has motion controls etc etc its not just a pc builded version you can port to a similar system lime ps4, xbox one.
beside that nintendo want to anounce games themself.
dont worry, the switch is a money machine, sega will release it.
@Menchi187
sounds a bit trollish.
ps4 pro. underpowered. crappy vr. can't run even the new god of war child in fakey 4k. but hey, it's got monster boredom world so there's that.
Really strange that it wouldn't be coming to Switch, especially as what shown doesn't look like a "remaster", but rather a "re-release" of the exact game at a higher resolution. Many remasters include higher resolution texture maps or lighting effects that weren't included in the base game's code and this appears to include nothing like that, at all.
So if other consoles can get an exact port at 1080p of an original XBOX game the Switch should be more than powerful enough to handle it. Seems like a missed opportunity to me. I will likely pick it up though on Xbox One X, depending on the price and if any additional features through visual effects or gameplay are added. The games themselves are pretty amazing, just too bad I can't have them on Switch to play on the go...
I would LOOOOOOOOOOOVE this on Switch!!
Nintendo will probably announce it themselves like Dark Souls
Considering that Shenmue 3 is PS4/PC exclusive...Shenmue 2 was (at the time of it's release) an XBOX exclusive, and the original was a Dreamcast exclusive (by the way, I loved both and can't wait for the new collection...will be owning on PS4...and for part 3), give it time people! Switch is still relatively new, and Shenmue 3 was announced when Wii U was still somewhat alive! They could have already had this collection made before Switch was even a name...in other words, it probably will come out for Switch, it just will be longer than the others to get out.
Never liked Shenmue saga. But if Skies of Arcadia won't come to switch there will be blood.....just saying
Ugh, I disagree with this "not coming to a Nintendo platform" articles. I guess people like me who don't like these articles aren't exactly helping b y clicking on 'em, so whatever.
Anyway, very bizarre for SEGA to put a niche Japanese series on a system where "Japanese -y" games usually bomb(Xbox). But not on a system where Japanese games do well. If storage is a problem, surely SEGA could do what Capcom did/is doing with Re Revelations 1+2 and the Mega Man collections where they have a download code for the second game?
I am trying to be excited or angry but...damn those games were boring to death!
As a Nintendo and PC gamer, I've already resigned myself to thinking of the Switch as only for Nintendo games, since third parties will apparently thumb their nose at Nintendo no matter how successful they are, and the indie games on the system often charge twice as much as they do on Steam.
I have tried to play shenmue so many times, but ugh cannot get into it. Not worried no switch port.
After all these years and it's coming to the systems I won't buy. I feel betrayed. I really really hope it comes to Switch,,,,the only game I have waited years for and this happens...utterly disappointed.
@AlphaElite I have already come to the same conclusion. Games like penny punching princess and longest 5 minutes costing $60 Australian for 10 hr games doesn't help either. So many of the indie games can be had way cheaper on steam or ps4 too, I just find myself refusing to buy them on the switch e shop no matter how bad I might want to.
@Yosher Those are a list of first party IPs. Not third party games.
Half Life 3 skipping Switch as well. Lame.
@JLPick
I hope you are right about it coming to the Switch. I have been waiting many many years for the conclusion of Shenmue but I'm not going to buy another system to play it. I have to say as Sega's biggest fan in the 80's and 90's, I'm disappointed in them. You'd never know they had a great early run and have some of the best IP's anyone has ever seen.
I bet it's skipping the Switch because there are no plans to release the upcoming sequel on the Switch?
@mailman Capcom never withdrew Monster Hunter from the Switch- Capcom are notoriously profit driven. They never released MH on Switch because it doesn’t have the same install base as PS4 yet. MH came out on 3DS because the console was already successful.
I think you are looking too much into this. Third parties are slow to come to the Switch party because they are cautious after Wii U. Nothing more.
I don't care if it's not on Switch, I just want to play this no matter the console
@kobashi100 You're right. this whole time i thought they were involved.my mistake
Yes... Let's not put this on the system that literally is tailor made for remaster and rehashes like no other system before it, and is dominating the sales charts....... Translation: its a 100% certainty it's coming to Switch.
@Malakai They're not coming to the Switch either though and have never been on Nintendo hardware either, just like these Shenmue games. That's my point. It's dumb to report on this here.
Nintendo hasn’t had good 3rd party support since the SNES. It’s very annoying, developers don’t seem to care how good a Nintendo console sells.
All you can do is laugh at this point.
@datamonkey this is a very sensible and logical answer. I agree!
never was into the Shenmue series any way. Nintendo will reveal more interesting games that is coming out this year that would put the haters to shame.
@bolt05 : Those prices are certainly idiotic. They should be $40 RRP like Has-Been Heroes was (and that's struggling to sell even at half price). The prices wouldn't be so hard to stomach if the production values reflected the asking price. Most of these games look like they were thrown together by a few mates over the course of a few weekends. Now I know that isn't the case, but these guys are having a laugh charging $60-$80 for pixel art games. Even the Wii's budget-priced shovelware wasn't that bad.
Unfortunately there haven't been any subsequent Switch games released in Australia at that price point. This Is The Police was scheduled for release pretty early on for $40 but was cancelled just weeks before release (I imported a U.S. copy). I reckon that would have sold a hell of a lot more copies than Has-Been Heroes. I have my eyes on the budget-priced Syberia games too, but I'm waiting for the port of the third game before I would even consider grabbing the first two.
I think developers and publishers of smaller scale games are squandering a huge potential market for Switch owners who simply don't have the budget (or perhaps even interest) to be splurging on AAA games.
I never played it but after all the hype online, I'm tempted to pick it up for the PS4. 3D doesn't age well, but I'm quite impressed by screenshots and video from the original Dreamcast game, considering the time period. If it eventually gets announced for the Switch, I'll still keep my PS4 version.
It will come to Switch as soon as they figure out how to compress both games as extras to Shenmue 3 on 1 physical cart. My uncle's proctologist's neice works at Nintendo and she told me.
I’ll wait just in case. I have the original games anyway.
@BlackenedHalo Sega must hate money too.
Surprise surprise...
I said back in the Wii U days that I wished that Nintendo had made a grab for this franchise when they had the deal for five (?) exclusives from Sega. Nintendo got Bayonetta I think but the rest was just more Sonic. A missed opportunity that might have shifted a few more Wii Us.
I’ve heard this is one of the first open world games, but is it pretty sparsely populated? I’m trying to figure out how relevant and fun this would be. Scared that maybe too many modern open worlds have spoiled me with different things that would make this game kinda unbearable.
@Anti-Matter That's right... but hey, you forgot about Doom, Resident Evil Revelations 1+2, FIFA 2018, Dragon Quest Builders, Bayonetta 1+2 and many more. I think the little greasy troll Menchi, should get his 3rd grade homework done in stead of posting about topics he clearly doesn't have a clue about.
Seems a strange decision but I wouldn't have bought it anyway so couldn't give a monkeys toss.
Not my cup of tea
@Whalehome It's not really like modern open world games (GTA, BOTW) and is more like the Yakuza series open worlds. There are plenty of things to do like training, working and going to the arcade but it is a bit more like a graphic adventure with action bits that you can do at (mostly) your own pace if that makes sense?
I would certainly have got this collection on Switch, boo.
Nintendon't do it Sega!
@Menchi187 You should change your username to Sligeach 187.
Well it's about time. I loved these back in the day but I imagine their reputations will have inflated expectations to such a level that those who didn't will be disappointed.
They're slow games, especially the first, and there's a LOT of just being in the world, taking in the details and talking to NPCs. They're not made for those with short attention spans.
@sillygostly I definitely agree with you!
I have wondered if those Syberia games are any good. At this point I look at e shop games, go on youtube and see some honest reviews (ignoring nintendolife that gives everything 8 or 9 /10) and then basically don't buy anything because the price is too high for mediocrity. There's an awful lot of shovelware on switch now, and highly priced at that.
I cant wait for Octopath traveler as I desperately need a sizeable rpg to restore my faith in the system. Im pretty concerned at just over a year in theres bugger all support from square enix, really disappointed. I may as well buy a ps4, although i resisted ont he promise of switch for years!
@bolt05 : I definitely agree about not wanting to pay big bucks for mediocrity. Hell, I have so many games, I don't consider it worth my time even if such games were to drop in price. Why play a Zelda clone (or a similar open-world game) when the very best Zelda game is available on the platform? Why spend money on the likes of Poi, Yooka-Laylee or even the Crash trilogy over Odyssey?
Publishers charging $60+ for pixel art games wasn't even an issue even during the Wii era (that I was aware of). Konami exploited the launch drought by charging a RRP of AU$90 for Super Bomberman R which worked in their favour, so I can't say that I blame smaller publishers for trying, but I do not think that it will be a sustainable business model in the long term, especially if big third party games begin to make their way on Switch and take attention away from small scale retail releases.
The retail release for Axiom Verge took an admirable approach, as it includes a CD soundtrack and a documentary on Blu-ray disc (Blu-ray!!!!!), and while I would love to support the developer (still considering it), I just can't see myself playing a Metroid clone when the real deal is an inevitability.
@Joe-b I agree. I loved sega when I was growing up, and they had plenty of IP's to keep them strong...just a shame they messed up in so many ways console wise. Dreamcast was a great system, just ahead of it's time, and I honestly think they should have kept it around for a little while longer instead of pulling the plug on it so quickly. Other than that, I honestly wish Sega would bring back some of their IP's. I'd love for a new Kid Chameleon, Bonanza Bros, Vectorman, Toe Jam And Earl, Phantasy Star, Beyond Oasis, Sword Of Vermillion, Golden Axe, Ecco The Dolphin and Decapattack. So many to chose from, and (what I feel X-box also does) gives up on the franchise too early.
@JLPick
Yes JL. When I was so desperate for a video game system the only option was the NES I didn't think it looked any better than Colecovision so I wasn't sure I wanted it plus I didn't like the controller. Then I passed a Sega Master System sitting on display at a local Caldor...now defunct. I was blown away by the design and the game on display which was Hang On / Safari Hunt I believe. I then got Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast..Sega never should have abandoned the Genesis when they did, or add on to it. But anyway, Dreamcast. Insane. I was so sad when they bailed on the hardware market. Then they literally blew up. Now I hear Shenmue is NOT coming to Switch. The game I think about almost daily since 2002...really bites. You named some awesome IP's. Don't forget Fantasy Zone!
Dreamcast has more games running at 60fps than the Switch. Facts
Or, you know, people could wait and see how it pans out?
@BigKing
Show us your working out on that one. Otherwise not a 'fact'. DC had 120 60fps games. Nearly every 2D game on Switch is 60fps, along with Mario, MK8, Splatoon, Pokken, Rocket League, Fast RMX, ARMS, Rayman, Puyo Tetris etc.etc.
@MisterKorman
"I guess I'm just different than other major Nintendo fans since I don't just automatically expect every game announced to be on Switch."
You're not alone. I think most Nintendo fans know the score. Switch is doing better than Nintendo systems usually do for third-party support. NL like to get a story out of it though, and the subset of posters who are desperate for Switch to fail like to make a big deal out of games not getting a Switch release. And the world keeps turning....
Meh. Played the original on Dreamcast. I thought it was alright, but nothing more. Wasnt compelled to play 2 on Xbox.
@SharkAttackU aww chicken chaser
I played Shenmue II on the XBox back in the day (and loved it). I definitely would like to have a handheld version.
Personally, I think the future is not looking very bright at this stage (I am yet to see anything that I am [even remotely] interested in that is coming to the Switch). I think the announcements have been pretty poor so far this year.
2017 was too BIG of a year for the Switch.. with BOTW and Odyssey both coming out in the same year. Of course I am not expecting a repeat of 2017 but now 2018 just seems minuscule in comparison. As games that I WOULD definitely buy - like the Disney Afternoon Collection (I had some of them on the NES back in the day and would have loved to play them again), Spyro and now Shenmue are all (at this stage?) just skipping the Switch.. All games that I love. 😔
I really am hoping that there is ace or two up the sleeve for the Switch to be announced soon (just a reveal of something / anything that I can look forward to).. 🤞
@SomeWriter13 why thank you, appreciate it!
As much as I would love to have one of my favorite games (Shenmue 1) on the go, this is one announcement that doesn’t really surprise me. I mean, it wouldn’t make sense to release it on Switch unless Shenmue III also stood a chance, which it doesn’t.
Honestly, I’m more irritated by the Sega Ages announcement. Yes, M2 does incredible work, but it does seem to be a second class citizen sort of announcement. “Switch owners, we understand that you’re upset that you’re not getting the 50+plus game collection that PS4/Xbox One owners are getting for $40-50, so to make it up to you, we’re going to release FIFTEEN of the games, at the low, low price of $6 (my assumption) apiece! If you buy them all, that’s only $72!” There is no reason why Sega couldn’t have released it!
@BanjoPickles if that sega ages collection expands to Saturn and Dreamcast people won't be complaining.
shenmue HD not being released on switch really isn't anything to do with no shenmue 3. Shenmue 3 is not being released on Xbox one and like i have said before. Sega is not involved with development or publishing of shenmue 3.
No shenmue disappointing but sega are supporting the switch and that can't be denied by anyone.
Valkyria Chronicles for Nintendo Switch
Valkyria Chronicles 4
Shining Resonance: Refrain
Phantasy Star Online 2 Cloud
@Anti-Matter Looks like you were buying Switch games for the sake of buying Switch games just because they are there. Did you really want all of them, and are playing each regularly?
@Bass_X0
Did you see my collections ?
I have 15 (Fifteen) Switch games right now.
I ONLY Buy rated Everyone / Everyone 10+ / few Teen , PEGI 3 / 7 / 12 , CERO A / B games. No More, No Less.
I ONLY buy games that i have Interest about.
I DON'T buy games what is popular to other peoples.
I still play my Switch games Regularly.
Portal Knights is my Numero Uno (Number One, with gameplay more than 130 hours started from 24 Dec 2017) right now.
Makes zero sense. These games were released on a console which is two generations old.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Shenmue 3 hasn't been confirmed for Xbox either, so it still doesn't make sense.
I wasn't going to buy it anyways! Personally I think it's one of the most overrated games.
@sillygostly funny you mention axiom verge, I keep almost buying it. I want to support Tom happ but it's about $18 on the E shop but I'm nearly out of room on my SD card now. I do like the multiverse edition in terms of value for money though! As you say there's a lot in the box at $60.
I think the next thing I buy for switch has to be a new SD card unfortunately.
Played the first Shenmue on my Dreamcast. Such a fantastic game and absolutely enjoyed every bit of it. Very disappointed that it isn't coming to Switch unless kept a secret to be announced at Treehouse Direct. If not, It'll have to be a miss. Not willing to spend more money on another console.
@electrolite77 I meant Sony paid SEGA to keep it off Nintendo, cus lets face it, that would be the most ideal perform to have the game on (heck alot of people are putting off intill a Switch is announced), and it's a pair of Dreamcast from over 15 years ago, The Switch can run it and I'm sure it will come to the system at some stage.
@electrolite77 Are you seriously bringing 2D games in the mix? Really? C'mon son. Get outta here.
@Joe-b There's too many great IP's by sega. As for Shenmue, don't give up, I'm sure the game will eventually arrive on Switch, just won't be for a year probably. The only time I was mad at Sega, was after the Dreamcast was abandoned, they moved all the games to X-box, which at the time I had a PS2 and Gamecube, which then made me purchase an Xbox just for the ones they did (toe jam and earl 3, shenmue 2, panzer dragoon orta, house of the dead 3, crazy taxi 3 and outrun). Yup, sega made some weird decisions. Even in the later generations, I hated the fact that some were exclusives to other consoles...Wii had 3 sonic games that were exclusives and various others...PS3 etc. But, I look at the whole dreamcast thing as being weird...PS2 got the Ecco the dolphin and Fur Fighters edition, where Gamecube got the RPG side of it (Evolution, Skies Of Arcadia and Phantasy Star). Was kind of happy, but wish that they would just make one big collection and continue with them. Also, hoping that the upcoming Sega Genesis collection (I think it's called a different title for Switch and a different name for PS4), continues with various volumes, instead of leaving it with the same exact ones they continue on each generation systems.
OK JL,
Lets hope for Shenmue for Switch. I would love to see Skied of Arcadia..either the Game Cube version or a new one.
@BigKing
We're not including 2D games? Oh well then DC had a lot less than 120.
If I were to guess, and knowing Sega, the reason for no-Switch is that they're not actually porting the engine to new architecture but are just planning on running the thing in emulation....meaning they need the horsepower of the PS4BoxOne to reproduce the Dreamcast and XBox....err...1....
I would have loved to play Shenmue 1 & 2 on Switch; it would have been my platform of choice. But, I'm a reasonable fellow. I've been an active member of the #SaveShenmue community for years, and I'm absolutely ecstatic to know that our efforts were not in vain... and also, that I no longer have to upset my friends and followers with my constant tweeting and retweeting on the third of every month.
Now I just need to blow the dust off my PS4 and charge my controllers in preparation.
@NEStalgia The developer in charge of the port has made it known they are working from the original source code.
@electrolite77 You named 7 3D games on the Switch and half of those are Wii U games.
@BigKing
Oh we're not including games that were on other systems first. Even less for the DC then. Not many left TBH.
Weird rules you're inventing here.
@electrolite77 Name some more Switch games than those 7.
Didn't know the DC first 2 year library was filled with four year old Saturn games.
The DC was a powerhouse and years ahead of it's time. The Switch is an underpowered console with a weak line up of games, unless you're really into 2D indie titles like you.
Mate, it's your facile and irrelevant comparison between different machines from different generations pushing different levels of game complexity and graphical quality, one that can function as a handheld and one that can't, one that's been out for a year and one that was out for over 3. I don't know (or care) whether you're right or wrong, however you stated it as fact, so I assumed you'd be able to back your claim up. Apparently not.
And now you're moving the goalposts again. Some of the DC's 60fps games were previously on PS1, Saturn, N64, Neo Geo or even in one case the Megadrive. A lot of them were 2D. I have no idea whether any of these count or what. If you want to compare exclusive, 3D 60fps games you should have said so.
"The DC was a powerhouse and years ahead of it's time."
Nostalgia is a powerful thing.
"The Switch is an underpowered console with a weak line up of games"
Well done for not putting 'facts' at the end of that claim.
"unless you're really into 2D indie titles like you."
Is this meant to be an insult? I like good games whoever they're by and however many 'D' they have. Being accused of liking games is not a very effective insult.
I'm so sad about this!!! Why they skip Nintendo Switch doesn't make sense
It’s me from the future!
Still no Shenmue on Switch. 😕
