Nintendo has revealed what the packaging for the Japanese version of the New 3DS will look like, and we're sure you'll agree that it's pretty sweet.
The box is colourful and stylish, and very, very different from the kind of packaging design we've seen for the 3DS range so far. It hints at the bright and fun Cover Plates which will also ship alongside the standard New 3DS model. Given that the larger New 3DS XL — presumably aimed at adults — doesn't accept these plates, there's a good chance that the packaging for that iteration might be a little more reserved.
The new hardware launches in Japan on October 11th, with the western release expected some time in 2015. As well as boasting a second analogue stick, NFC and additional shoulder buttons, the revised console has a better screen, more powerful processor and uses MicroSD cards for storage. You can read all the details in our handy guide.
Thanks to RupeeClock for the tip.

Now that box design is a breath of fresh air
I like it, and on the shelves it will definitely stand out which what it is all about. But by the time it comes to Europe it'll probably look dull in comparison. Plus we won't get the charger either - it will come separate like with the XL.
its cool, hope the back has all the new features detailed on it
Nice!! I hate how it comes out so late though. I've recently convinced a handful of friends and even my brother to get smash Bros on the go. And them not having a 3ds would have been perfect for them to grab the new and improved modern technology 3ds lol.
@rdp223 Yes! I am on the campaign as well. I have 4 right now to snatch smash as well as another who is going to buy a 3ds. A western release this year would be beyond smart.
Aw I want it
Can anyone explain the lengthy localization of the New 3DS to the west? I understand the games having longer ones, but Nintendo already knows the N3DS is going to be sold in Western Countries. Shouldnt it all be completed around the same time, or is it more complex?
EU and US boxes are probably going to be boring in comparison.
Totally sweet, right?
It really brings home how the regular model emphasises customisation with the plates.
It's actually making the decision to get a New 3DS XL that much harder, as despite loving the metallic blue model and preferring the size, it just doesn't have that lovely customisation.
I'm guessing we're not gettinf it yet since they really want to push wii u sales this holiday.
That box is too kawaii for me.
I want 1 more and more, always been jelous of my friends XL compared to my 3ds but think normal size is the way to go again!
@Jazzer94 Wouldn't bother me if it was just brown cardboard without any printing at all. (Like the Amazon Eco Friendly packaging).
Well I just commented that I don't get all the fuss about the "faceplates" but apparently I'm missing the part where Nintendo sells the new 3DS primarily to sell bazzillions of faceplates to the Japanese market.
By the time this releases in the west I bet the box is promoting the built in NFC as the amiibo should be out by then. To me that's the 1 major thing the new 3DS can do that the old 1 couldn't. Well that and Xeno, but when that releases only in Gamestop in the US for $79 used it won't really be a big selling point.
Looks very colorful. Better than the ones that just show gradients and plain white to show the products.
If this makes it to NA, it'll really stand out in the shelves along all the other boring consoles
It's too messy for me but at least it will stand out.
I'll gladly put that on top of one of my bookcases with the other boxes. XD
At least the box stands-out, I just the American version is similar to this one..
you'd think the NA version would come out before christmas...you know...to maximize pr$fit, and to satisfy us all
Looks great! Sadly the American box will probably be plain and yawn inducing.
This needs to come out NOW! Can't believe its not coming out this holiday season in NA!
@GoombaJMR sadly, the WiiU needs the push this Xmas. Hope they bring the bright early 90s packaging to Europe too, looks so, fresh!
I want to buy one in Europe now
Why oh why do they tease us with such a long wait! 2015 seems soooo far away. Take my money now, please (before it's gone, haha).
@crzysortagamer Probably has to do with shipping and contracts with retailers. I'm sure legal jargon is involved as well.
WHY YOU MAKE NEW 3DS LOOK SO MUCH BETTER THAN NEW 3DS XL NINTENDO, WHY!?!?!
@Vrael
Yeah, i know there is a good reason, everyone likes to ignorantly complain. I mean don't get me wrong, I do too, but I at least like to know why.
@crzysortagamer The only theory that makes sense is "They're going to change the name, the same way they did it with the LL/XL".
I mean, why else would it take so long? If they changed the name they'd need to change the boxes, the logo on the console, quite a lot of stuff...
Hopefully the western name will be "Super Nintendo 3DS"
@Melkac
Yeah, ... reminds me of the story about Samus and her shorts costume in smash. Nintendo needs more go getters like Sakurai and his team
I WANT IT NOWWWWWWWWWWWWW5
@crzysortagamer I'm honestly tired of Miyamoto's lame philosophies and Iwata's backwards business options ("3DS"? "Wii U"? "New 3DS"[again, hopefully this is just the japanese name]? Another cel-shaded Zelda even though it's been proved time and time again that realistic Zeldas sell better?) at this point.
Hopefully Sakurai takes over the company someday. He knows his stuff.
@Nintendolife : Does anybody know if they are removing the 300 application cap from the new 3DS's?
@rjejr It taps into that customize, collector aspect in people. Its why collectors editions sale so well even though its the same system as the standard color.
I have impulse bought systems just because of how they look.
I wonder if the the new 3ds is liable to the 2% charge after Ninty lost the patent suit, or this new 3d circumvents this with new tech?
I hope the western box will be that colorful!
@Melkac
I agree!! I hope he makes it up in the ranks as well. All around Nintendo hasnt disappointed me too too much, but Sakurai could dominate.
@Ryu_Niiyama - I get collectors editions, they're limited so people have a perceived added value. But I don't really see that big of a difference between these "Face-plates" and the rather cool covers my kids got w/ their launch 3DSs years ago:
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-SuperMario-Crystal-Armor-Hard/dp/B005FPDFRK/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1409843638&sr=8-10&keywords=3ds+mario+cover
http://www.amazon.com/3DS-Zelda-Armor-Green-Nintendo/dp/B005687N7E/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1409844036&sr=1-3&keywords=3ds+zelda+case
Why not just make covers that can go on either the old or new 3DS? Just seems odd. Guess I'm not enough of a fanboy.
now this is a cool box
@rjejr That's the thing though. I think there are two mindsets when it comes to collector's editions. There are those that are true collectors, they keep the product in the box or on display. They may sell it for markup later. Then you get what i guess could be called fan collectors. They buy the product because it has something they love on it. Which is why face plates can pique those types of people. I think I had one of those armors you linked to.
Agreed on the faceplates for everybody, but I suspect Nintendo wants to see how huge the demand is. After all the 3ds is still a viable size especially for the Japanese who may have smaller hands.
Has anybody heard what they are going to do with the 2ds? I want to buy one for my nephew but no point in wasting money if they are just going to refresh it later.
@Ryu_Niiyama - "Has anybody heard what they are going to do with the 2ds?"
I was just thinking about the 2DS after my reply to you and that it's not a coincidence it hasn't released in Japan yet with these face swapping models coming out. My guess is 2DS releases in Japan right after never. Why sell a cheap model when you can sell a more expensive model, loads of faceplates, and amiibos which work w/ the built in NFC?
As for the 2DS in the west, it's a cheap system for kids, even if they did upgrade it... well why would they, it doesn't even have the 3D screen. Even if they started making it w/ the faster processor they probably wouldn't tell anybody, and the NFC should have been built in from the start. Kids are going to want the changeable faceplates anyway. Though maybe it gets an NFC model, who knows with Nintendo?
You know, I'd love to see Nintendo start using it's classic and iconic red company logo again.
Just popped into my head after seeing that box.
Here's the "NEW 3DS XL" photo: https://s1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/lndQWFscmw20WXvtrtMEZg--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTtzbT0x/http://media.zenfs.com/en-us/homerun/rss.gamesbeat/3c4204bc88f4e63cf3c68cde7c4270c0
Baing able to exchange covers? Shut up and take my money.
@KnightRider666 I also want to know that. I currently have more than 250 and hope that new 3DS can remove that limitation. I think if the reason for old 3DS is because that the hardware can't handle too much software, there should be no such excuse for new 3DS. The only question is whether Nintendo is too lazy to make this modification.
First time ever that I've been tempted to import a hand-held!
@mullen: You can have 60 pages(5 apps per page) when you go to your data mgmt menu. I doubt nintendo will be smart enough to fix this seeing as it only affects a few people.We can only hope, right?
omg I just realized these weren't even announced outside Japan
Aww, I hope the XL packaging looks this goo- sees Frapp's comment Oh...
@rjejr I personally love Hori's duraflexi clear cases because it's so easy to print and design your own covers.
I want one sooooooo much!
Whats to stop people making their own coverplates and images.
As soon as the New 3DS is released someone will make these as knockoffs, or customised home made 3D printed covers with custom ink transfers.
This will become a cottage industry.
so i guess there staying with the new new nintendo 3ds name >.> ugh
@AXEL314 - "Hori's duraflexi clear cases"
Hadn't seen those before but I do like TPU covers. And again why I don't see faceplates as THE marketing box material for a new 3DS, just kind of says to me the new 3DS doesn't have enough to differentiate it from the old model. Which I suppose is why it's just new 3DS and not 3DSn or 3DS 2 or something.
I'ld much rather just get a set cover like the MH4G one above this post and put the Hori over that.
I was hoping the LL would get a nice colorful box as well. I am wondering what the smash box art is going to look like though.
I need it. ;____;
I can only pray that "I'm too cool for school" America will get similarly awesome packaging.
I have the original Ice blue 3DS. I wanted to upgrade for the XL one but after seeing the New 3DS I think I'll just get the regular one. I'm a sucker for customization and the cover plates are looking pretty cool. Plus the colored buttons are calling me. I like the packaging but I don't know why they think adults would want a boring package. I'm 37 and I like colors so why would I want a boring package.
