Back in May, Nintendo announced that they were looking to do theatrical animated films based on a variety of their IP.
This came as a shock exciting many, as Nintendo was known for being very protective of their properties since most early productions received poor responses.
While many are excited to learn which series Nintendo will be adapting, we may have the answer to who will be producing at least one of them. A podcast released on Nickelodeon's YouTube channel has been outed to be allegedly detailing a purported Nintendo property.
Here's a transcription:
We have a project now that we're doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world famous video games of the last 30 years, that we've had in our shop for twelve years without being able to get it started. But there were great characters and a great story, and eventually we got it going.
The person stating this is Fred Seibert of Frederation Studios animation, his production studio is famous for working on Adventure Time and Fairly Oddparents.
It seems as if he's had a lot of interest and excitement over producing this feature, so it almost goes without saying that it only recently allowed him to get started creating it with his team. The aforementioned announcement of Nintendo finally opening up to animated films, seems to support this thought-process.
Fred's line stating that the title had been, "in our shop for twelve years" unfortunately means that the title will not be Splatoon related. On that note what Nintendo series would you want to be adapted into a feature film? This particular writer would choose Balloon Fight any day of the week.
As for now, all we can do is wait since there's been no confirmation from Nintendo.
Thank you user @Noot_Soos for the tip.

but what if its metroid
I've got it. They're doing Drill Dozer.
It's probably Mario. Maybe zelda, but probably mario. Those are the only two Nintendo franchises worthy of "most famous in 30 years"
All I can say is I hope Nick makes good use of the license...
Something tells me that I'm not gonna like this.
Well, I hope Nickelodeon does a good job. Disney would be better, but at least it isn't Cartoon Network, as the CN is currently throwing Sonic Boom under the bus.
This is amazing, thank you so much for citing me and my recent forum post! I'll consider this a sort of last-minute Christmas gift.
Merry Christmas, everybody! (Even if it just ended 5 minutes ago, EST.)
Either Mario or Zelda on the Nintendo side.
But I could see it being something like Pac Man
@Nicolai
I dunno. Donkey Kong could be a nice candidate
@YouSeemFRAZZLED Yes, it really is if you're an animation enthusiast. I've listened to the majority of them. Really looking forward to when they finally bring on Steven Hillenberg.
@Wendigo Nah, I don't think so since Disney Channel had the recent Ghostly Adventures animated series. I talked about that in my NL forum post about this news piece a couple days ago.
@MetaRyan @ReshiramZekrom This doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be a Nick show; Frederator has done a lot of work with Nick, but they also created Cartoon Network shows such as Adventure Time. Even though this is the Nick Animation Podcast, they have also talked with the creators of Chowder, My Little Pony, etc., which aren't Nickelodeon programs. Basically, the new show could be on either network.
I guess another Mario show would be kinda cool...though I kinda agree with Joeynator3000
@MetaRyan Sonic Boom is the best Sonic related piece of entertainment since Sonic & Knuckles.
It'll most likely be Mario; I'm liking the idea of a Frederator-produced animated Mario movie.
But there's no proof the project has anything to do with Nintendo...
I demand a remake of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.
But only if the rap episode is taken out.
Final fantasy is 30 next year - it might be that. The podcast doesn't mention Nintendo in it
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy You better not be dissing on that rap episode....
Joking aside, I hope Nickelodeon doesn't screw this movie up. Maybe they won't do Mario; I can see them doing a WarioWare movie maybe because of its humor and cartoonish appeal.
The Fairly Oddparents studio was interested in making a super violent Castlevania 3 anime, maybe it's that?
I can see a Donkey Kong show happening. It just seems more "Nickelodeonish" to me than Mario.
@Not_Soos Thanks for making the connection, stay awesome.
If Nick is revving up a Nintendo film, Nintendo should rev up a SpongeBob game for the Switch, or at the very least, add SpongeBob or TMNT to SMASH!
@Joeynator3000 Tak and the Power of Juju was an animated series based on a videogame. Look how well that turned out...
This could be about pacman. I suppose we will see sometime soon.
@gloom Oh, god. Please no. Has Fox Kids not done enough?!
@Senpai_Bruh The rap episode was nothing compared to the Diddy Drop Rap.
@SheldonRandoms I dunno about that, but a remaster of Battle for Bikini Bottom would be pretty amazing!
The 90's Mario cartoon was my childhood cartoon. Well, if only Japanese studios handle the new Mario animation... like Bandai Namco maybe ?
It must be Legend of Zelda, only that could had great characters and story.
From the original system, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus seemed to have strong enough stories to flesh out. If handled properly, perhaps in the tone of the Smash cut scenes of recent years, any of them would be fantastic.
I fully understand Nintendo's hesitation over movies and tv shows as they haven't had much success in the past. However, these days, companies are more respectful of IPs and there are people out there that will do their franchises justice. Compare movies based on Marvel properties in the 80s and 90s to todays Marvel movies.
All toasters toast toast.
TLOZ really needs a series or a movie,no matter if it's live action,a cartoon or an anime.The "excuse me princess" tv show was made when the TLOZ universe was very bare bones.So they made a lot off stuff up,wich isn't faithful to the depictions in later games.
@AlexSora89
Mr. Crocker will scream "PIKACHUUU...!!!"
Instead "FAIRY GODPARENTS...!!!"
@Anti-Matter
"I'll prove the existence of... POKÉMON!!! POKÉMONPOKÉMONPOKÉMONPOKÉMONPOKÉMON!!!"
If it's a Nintendo ip, it'll be Mario. It's always Mario
Wave Race
I'll be amazed if it doesn't go into development hell, and actually does get finished. (Unlike the 2000s cancelled Metroid movie) I'm a li'l skeptical having Nick make it, but admittedly they did a good job with the new TMNT show, and the "Out of the Shadows" sequel was much improved over it's predecessor.
I wouldn't mind a Balloon Fight movie either. That game rules. (Despite the unfortunately bad score & review this site gave it. One of the reasons I rarely even read the reviews here.)
If Frederator is involved, then Cartoon Hangover will cover the news for us, as well. They're he company behind the Bravest Warriors.
Oh, no...
Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuse me, Princess.
Bowser's Modern Life
Freshly-Squeezed Tingle in TV Land
This may sound strange...can we get a Captain N reboot???. Other than that, I could see them making Kirby, Metroid Or Zelda or even possibly Donkey Kong, but I think we all know it will be something with Mario, as that would be the biggest money maker to bring kids to see it...the others would bring older gents to see them, but kids are attracted to Mario and even Pokemon (But pokemon has not been out for 30 years)...as for Metroid, it would look better as a live-action film, not animated and Zelda...didn't really work for the cartoon series.
It could be a condition of the Nintendo/Universal Studios deal.
@allav866 I stopped watching "new" cartoons ages ago. lol
A Zelda like Avatar quality and I'll watch it. Ramon poop and I wont
Splatoon or Mario series would be nice
30 year old game character in their shop for 12 years without being able to get started....
Yeah, leaning towards mario
@Joeynator3000
Nowadays Western cartoon are suck.
I miss 90's / early 2000 cartoons.
There will be no more Mind Blowing , Very creative cartoon like Codename Kids Next Door, Imaginative cartoon like Chalk Zone, Cartoon with Educative messages at the end of each episodes like Captain Planet, Insane Cartoon like Tiny Toons / Animaniacs (Though a lot of Slapsticks inside , lol),etc.
For Educational series, my favorite is Handy Manny, The ONLY Chibi form of Educational 3D Animated cartoon that I love from Head to Toe (Guess that Western did what Japanese didn't)
Also, Wild Kratts series my another favorite . I'm so jealous to see such an intimate "Bromance" relationship between Martin & Chris in the cartoon.
Ooh a new Captain N the Game Master would be effing great!
@kamikazilucas OOOOOOOOOODD METROIDS!
FAIRLY ODD METROIDS! XD
Fairly Odd Parents + Pokemon = Pokefaire.
Cosmo, Wanda, Poof, Wandisimo, Jurgen, Tooth Fairy, etc become a Pokemons aka Pokefaires (Catchable Pokefaires).
Timmy Turner will be a Trainer as well as Mr. Crocker become a main antagonist. And mostly Pokefaires type are Fairy (They are Fairies, aren't they?) except invasion of Danny Phantom Ghosts (Ghost type).
Oopsie... too much random ideas. XD
@Angelic_Lapras_King
Samus will be Timmy Turner's Mom. XD
Or Wanda.
Why does Nintendo never seem to want to work with Disney? Maybe I'm just bitter still that they picked Universal Parks over Disney too.
What the hell is a Paisono? Do you mean "Paisano"?
@Whopper744
Nintendo + Disney = Disney Magical World 3DS. With a help by Bandai Namco.
Best case scenario: a Legend of Zelda series in the styling of Avatar: Last Airbender. Worst case scenario: Michael Bay makes a Metroid film.
What I would actually love to see is a really weird Warioware/Wario Land cartoon that's just absolutely bonkers.
@Anti-Matter I mean a little more than that, such as with the park, shows, etc. Plus, while I'm not afraid to play a game that looks "kiddie", those two games seem like they are very much focused on young kids and not really something many adults would appreciate....that's coming from someone who hasn't actually played them though.
@Anti-Matter @Whopper744 Disney is infamous in the corporate world as being VERY conservative when it comes to collating with other big companies. It's basically their way or the highway. Whenever they license their characters out they are VERY strict on how they are depicted and how much screen time they get.
Wonder why the Kingdom Hearts games aren't available digitally? They're scared that it would be easier to pirate. It's only been in the last 3-4 years that they've loosened upped, but they still want complete control on how products with their IPs are handled.
Nintendo is also pretty bad with trusting other companies with their IPs, so it would make sense that if there is any talk between the two for anything it probably falls apart when the discussion for control and distribution comes up. If Mickey and Mario are in a single product together it'll make a butt-ton of money and you best believe they'll both fight on who takes control and thus who makes the most money from the deal.
Am I the only one who's scared because of this?
Well, excuuuuuuse me, princess!
But seriously, if it's Mario...can you imagine a whole movie with Mr. Martinet's Mario voice? I mean I love it for what it is but it would be torture for an entire movie. Remember that like, 5 minute 3DS trailer he did? It was hard to listen to.
@Anti-Matter Nah, gotta be Samus as Timmy as her and her Fairy Odd Metroids travel the galaxies on Bounty Hunter missions and trying to use wishes to make life easily. XD
"I wish the Space Pirates were Goombas!"
I hope they made lotsa spaghetti!
Come on, Metroid!
After the horrible way they treated their best shows (avatar/legend of Korra) I want nothing to do with nick.
As someone who loathes both Fairly Odd Parents and Adventure Time, I have very low expectations for this.
@Trikeboy
That's a laugh!
@Captain_Gonru
Kirby Right Back At Ya! Says hello and it's a pretty good cartoon.
Nah, it will just be Mario vs Rabbids. Lol!
I read this as 'Team that made Avatar: the Last Airbender (the greatest animated series ever made) might be making an anime-styled series of Zelda or Metroid'
An anime-styled series of Metroid would be astoundingly good if done by the right people. Netflix always seemed like a better place for these sorts of thing though. The Voltron reboot was much better than the source material of edited together Japanese clips. They did bury S4 of Korra though despite it being much better than S2.
@Uzuki You make a good point about how protective both are on their IPs. Call me naive, but I think that's why both could meet in the middle because I think both know how important it is to maintain the integrity of a franchise.
I think if it came to a particular IP that Disney would knock out of the park, a Mario movie would be it. If they had to take on Zelda, Pixar would be my pick to do it.
Article posted as "News", not "Rumor".
Article title: "Nickelodeon Allegedly Creating Animated Film For A Nintendo Series".
Article text: "A podcast released on Nickelodeon's YouTube channel has been outed to be allegedly detailing a purported Nintendo property."
Source: Podcast not mentioning Nintendo at all.
Stellar journalism confirmed.
@Uzuki Good points. I love what both companies create but they can be like that. I think Nintendo itself is worse than Disney though in some ways with that. May be getting better though.
@MadAdam81 I agree that it's good, that's why I'm upset that Cartoon Network does next to no advertising for it, and doesn't even let it air at decent times.
(Not trying to be mean or anything, just making sure it's clear that I like Sonic Boom and not the CN.)
@MitchVogel I would get Nick on demand to watch that. It would be my favorite cartoon of the decade.
@Captain_Gonru
My mistake. I thought you didn't know about it and was recommending it to you. If you haven't seen it, it really is good.
@Not_Soos If they handled a remaster of Battle for Bikini Bottom, i'd rev that up!
SpongeBob in SMASH might be soaking in too much, but to have the perfect balance or whatever, Splatoon would make sense to be the animated movie from Nick. There was already the SpongeBob vs. Patrick Splatfest, and since day one and before the games release, inklings were requesting Squidward to be in the game. What Nintendo could do in the next Splatoon game to "return the favor" and "PROMOTION!" is have Spongebob related clothing, weapons, or go the extra mile and rev up a bikini bottom stage, so that way, Squidward can be in the background, and all the little inklings can live happily ever after as they ride on a horse into the sunset that is underwater......THE END then revs up.
I would love a new mario serie
I'm going to need more proof that this is Nintendo related. Additionally saying 'one of the most recognizable of the last 30 years' could just be a way of staying vague so as to not give much away. Don't see it being Mario or Zelda, at this stage if it is a Ninty show my money would be on Kirby or Donkey Kong, as they are a little less sacred.
Some of Nick's movies from the past decade have actually been pretty good. Rango and The Adventures Of Tintin, in particular.
Not the TMNT films though. Those were just awful.
Turns out it's Pac-Man... you know, that dead franchise that people keep trying to unsuccessfully revive.
It depends on the show runner. If the team behind the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series (not the movies) does it, it should be amazing.
A Super Mario show would seem the logical choice since it is one of the oldest and most popular Nintendo franchise and Nick does make children shows. Mario is family friendly. Of course there's also Donkey Kong. I can't see a Zelda show that family friendly, the previous show defined wasn't good. Maybe Kirby. Nickolodeon is a family friendly tv channel, so that rules out Metroid and Punch Out. Earthbound and F-Zero aren't that old and I can hardly see a Game & Watch show.
@Trikeboy Some Marvel movies today are still done horribly wrong though. About a little less than half of them in fact are wrong if you compare them to the original story in the comics, or the movie was bad in general if you look at the plot, the physics in the movie, or if it went by too fast to understand what was going on
I personally feel like a Mario cartoon would work, given the charming humour of the series, large cast of characters and surreal kinds of adventures that could take place.
I am nostalgic for old Nickelodeon but as I don't watch it these days I feel like it could be done not to my standard. But, I'll try and stay hopeful... what ever it could be. :3
@Uzuki the kh games arent avaliable digitally because of music liscening issues, not because of piracy, since other disney games are avaliable digitally.
Wow animated video production of mario thats great
