Halloween is upon us, and while children all over the globe get themselves ready to don horrible costumes and harass their neighbours for candy, we're taking a look at a spooky old NES classic which really should be on the Virtual Console on a day like today.
Monster Party is an action platformer with a ghoulish theme, and came to North American via publisher Bandai many years ago. It's a downright daft piece of gaming entertainment, but there's an interesting story behind it — as you'll learn from the video below.
This video marks the debut of I ♥ Virtual Console, a series that we'll be expanding over the coming months. We'll be looking not only at amazing games already available on Nintendo's download service, but — as in the case of Monster Party — titles we'd dearly love to see get a release.
Watch the video and please do let us know what other topics you'd like us to cover in future episodes. Oh, and if you haven't done so already, please subscribe to the Nintendo Life YouTube channel to show your support! We'll love you forever.

SORRY, I'M DEAD.
That reminds me, been meaning to watch that movie with my kids before they're too old.
Mad Monster Party

I'd never heard of this until now, but now it's all I want to see on the VC...
Just a reminder: NOT Children all over the globe get themselves ready to don horrible costumes and harass their neighbours for candy as Halloween is not celebrated . The answer is simple: Halloween is celebrated in only 16 countries out of the 200 countries that our globe has
You should start recording and uploading videos in 60 fps now that youtube finally supports it.
@Deadstanley Prototype only. One of the many bosses modified or removed completely in the final version.
Friend of mine actually lent me his NES a few months ago and this was one of the many games he let me borrow. I can get to the 2nd level and that's it.
Also, I was really excited, thinking this was an announcement for Monster Party on VC. Now I'm sad.
This is a really fun game, might have to bust it out tonight. Its one of the few I still have the manual for. Bandai released some great games in the nes days.
Man this game is great! Another super creepy NES game I used to play a lot is Tombs & Treasure.
Played this game 20 years ago and never knew what it was I played, enjoyed and what terrified me until recently I saw someone on youtube play a game named Monster Party. I want this on my Wii U now!
I bought this blind as a kid and felt ripped off. I could have gotten Metroid or Kid Icarus, but no. I bought Monster Party. Like @endy_n_omni, I couldn't get past level 2.
You could grind to replenish your life meter, but not infinitely. After so much, they quit giving you health. The game is bizarre, but very difficult.
@TyGuy: This is easily the best quality video I've seen Nintendo Life put out, so here's hoping you and the site can produce more together in future!
It is a little odd however that the first subject of a series called 'I ♥ Virtual Console' is a game not actually on the service, but I guess it's something you really wanted to talk about, and I'm glad to have found out about it too.
loved this game as a kid. a weird gem in the nes library.
@ToneDeath Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed it! You'll definitely see more like this in the future.
Ah, warm memories. My cousin received this game one Christmas, and we took turns playing it. We managed to beat the game in one sitting, but we had a great time.
Lol now that I know it exsits I want it.
@rjejr great movie! Kids may think it's weird once they're older... Good idea!
Would be cool to see, though on the day it's released tons of people will just complain that it's not Donkey Kong Country
First heard about this game from JonTron. Ever since I've grown quite the interest in it. Would definitely buy if it ever came on VC.
I still have my copy of Monster Party, played this game a lot when I was a kid. This game is fun and hard, could never beat that maze level. Still a fun game
@Cosats ouch. This was an article about a video game that they felt belonged on the Virtual Cosole, not proselytizing for (or against) Halloween... This is not the place to discuss social mores, just sayin'
@Platypus101 This was clearly an educational piece of information about Halloween. And you bet, this is the place to add little bits of such information from time to time
As a Gremlins fan, I really loved the Mogwai bit. As for I <3 Virtual Console, I think this is a great series and that you guys pro-actively release a ton of videos. The VC is one of my favorite things about the Wii/Wii U, so can't wait for you guys to post more!
@Cosats No, it was an "educational piece" about a game that was never played by most of us. And I'd sooner say it's a "did you know?" or trivia video since it doesn't do all that much to educate, especially on the topic of Halloween...
And seeing as this is an English site it isn't all that strange that they report on Halloween. They also take into account the many American subscribers, which is a nice thing.
If it weren't for Jontron, I would've never heard of this game.
Man I loved this game when I was growing up, and used to have it until me and a friend swapped games and never swapped back lol.
@Iggly I was about to say the exact same until I saw your comment XD
The Guardian Legend.
In an ideal world, it would be on the VC already. Alas, this is not an ideal world...
@TheRealThanos My reminder (and correction) that Halloween is not celebrated AROUND THE GLOBE stands true. I am really sorry for not agreeing with my correction. Halloween is a wonderful celebration, nevertheless. Happy Halloween to all
@Cosats First off: there's no need for you to correct anybody since no mistake was made, either by NLife or anyone commenting on this article. Secondly, what I was trying to make you understand is that because of it's origins, it is only natural for NLife to report on things Halloween related, and that has NOTHING to do with the fact that it isn't celebrated in other countries.
Every country probably has some festivity or other that isn't celebrated in the rest of the world. It is both pretty obvious and quite useless to point that out, but you seem to be pretty much set to stick to your guns.
Thumbs up if Jon Tron brought you here
Yo--you should discuss Fire N Ice, one of my favorite NES games. Fantastic puzzle game, 10/10.
That was an amazing video. Wish I would have watched thsi before stopping at the used video game shop today. May have to go back to see if they have this. It looks amazing.
Love this game.
Metal gear solid ghost of babel (GBC)
Oh my god, this game. I absolutely adore it. Basically a fever dream version of the kind of crap that bounces around in my head all day. Not really sure what that says about me, baby!
i dont know about "youll never play"...
i have the cart. i beat it years ago and its a great game.
@Deadstanley & @TyGuy
the prototype was purchased a few months ago and was released online to play.
I am amazed that so many years later, really bizarre NES games keep cropping up. It's a testament to the amount of experimentation creators dealt with back then.
@ogo79
Heh, i was thinking the exact same thing — "...you'll never play.."
My own cart sitting right over there says differently as well.
Ah, Monster Party. This was one of my favorite NES games. I never quite beat it, but the level design and out-there bosses (ala Earthbound, at times, though perhaps even stranger) were top-notch entertainment for a kid like me who nearly s**t his pants after level one transformed from bouncy and happy to skulls and blood drenched trees and the like. And I also remember the music being really moody and dark for an NES title. Great game. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
As JonTron said, "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT I LIIIIIIIIIIIIIED, I WAS NOT, I WAS NOT READY FOR THIS, NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE, SO MUCH NOPE!"
@the_shpydar
we are fantastic people.
The Virtual Console is one of my most important favorites in a Nintendo console. I love it since i have the Wii, then the 3ds, and now the Wii U and i keep downloading little by little all the Wii VC that never will arrive to Wii U before it get deleted.
@Cosats just 20, that seems incorrect... Today many more countries celebrate it in some degree
