Fortunately for fans of the genre, reasonable and solid RPGs are a fairly common find on the 3DS eShop. With the bar set high by excellent titles such as Bravely Default, Rune Factory 4 and Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan, it can be rather difficult to make an RPG that really stands out from the pack. Nevertheless, that's precisely what Flyhigh Works is setting out to do with its upcoming release.
Via Twitter a while ago (we missed it at the time) Fairune II was announced to be on the way to the 3DS eShop; as publisher CIRCLE Entertainment was making the announcement a localisation for the West seems like a given. The sequel to last year's Fairune, this looks set to deliver more colourful 16-bit RPG goodness. We awarded the original Fairune a 7/10 in our review; while it may not be the perfect game, it's a reasonable effort at such a budget price.

A few days after that announcement some background music was uploaded to YouTube, which certainly establishes the game's vibe.
What do you think? Were you a fan of the original Fairune? Sound off in the comments below.

I still need to get the first one. Heard it was good for the price it was.
The first Fairune was really its own beast a bit Zelda and a bit Neutopia from the TurboGrafx. It was brilliantly streamlined. Although a short RPG run it was done perfectly in my oppinion. I will definitely get Fairune II I'm sure it will be an excellent sleeper hit as well. However the bar will be raised so we will see how it does.
@Spoony_Tech you getting Monster Hunter 4 this week? I hope we can play together. Sorry we missed each other on Fantasy Life.
This looks interesting! Might pick it up once I upgrade to the new 3ds
AAAARGH!!! And germany got no trace of the first one because stupid USK is such a bother for small companies like CRICLE! Either Nintendo needs to drop country-locking on eShop content, or germany needs to FINALLY accept PEGI as a rating system! Dammit, this sucks!
@Windy Yes but mines being sent yo me so hoping it arrives this week.
For me rpg's need to be a long affair. At least 10 hours. I'd download the first one if it were longer, at a even higher price point (5.99 or so).
@maceng
Well, your first problem is that it's not an RPG.
Anyway, Fairune 1 was pretty awesome, so I'm happy to hear Fairune II is happening.
The first Fairune is free on iOS. I highly doubt the 3DS extras are worth $3, and since the game is so simple, the virtual controller is no problem to deal with. It was a nice little game for sure, and I will definitely pick up the sequel.
@Quorthon
Upon your advise, I downloaded the first one. I haven't finished it, as I was away on a business trip, but so far, it's a lovely little gem. Looking for all the hidden entrances is challenging and fun.
cool i just hope they improve battle system cuz it was kinda poor in the first one , u run throught enemy to attack -_-
People complaining about running into enemies obviously haven't had the pleasure of playing/enjoying the Y's series or a few other classics. There's a still a bit of tension/strategy involved in a few areas while leveling up or sneaking to an objective while low on health.
I'll definitely be snagging the sequel!
@Kaze_Memaryu
Ikr, I'd really like to play this and the first one, but no such luck. Just like that whole Ittle Dew debacle for Wii U (at least it's on Steam).
Btw, I love the music!
So I loved the first one, one my best gaming memories of 2014 was playing this next to my kids, who were each also playing the game, each on their 3DS. We stopped at different points to wait for others to catch up, we shared how to get through points were someone got lost, shared secret rooms that we found, and generally had a blast.
It made me pull out Y's again, a favorite of mine, and I found I'd enjoyed Fairune more, largely b/c it was just so short and tight! No endless grinding. Lots of the unique Y's take (those who want this game to be like other RPGs probably won't love it).
Cannot wait for the sequel, will definitely buy if it makes it to the US.
Fairune, eh? Sounds suspiciously similar to "Faerûn"...wait a minute...is this game referencing Forgotten Realms?!
Also, just noticed that the playing field is on the top screen this time so maybe we'll get a cool pop out look to the game now!
Also, hope they bring Drancia next
I suppose I did enjoy the 1st game.
Ok I just went all over the German eshop and the first game is nowhere to find...is this one of those situations again where it was realized absolutely every except Germany????
Cool. The first one was a fun little game, i'll definitely be picking up the sequel.
@Quorthon
Well, NL considers it a rpg, so...
Still, I get your badly-taken-across point: it is more of an adventure than a rpg.
@denpa-ben
Did it came with any IAP's? I hate those.
If not, then developers should try to better price their games, so as not to have any discrepancy such as this.
@maceng No, I don't think so. I completed the game without spending a cent.
@maceng
It has a few RPG elements, but then, so does Call of Duty, and Far Cry, and pretty much everything else these days.
But it's closer to a Zelda game than, say, Final Fantasy. What it's supposedly much closer to is the old Ys TG-16 titles, but I haven't played one of those, so I can't say.
It's $2 (or was it $3?) and it ran me around 4.5 hours--and I feel like I have a leg-up on a lot of gamers as I still have some of the old-school mentality in me in that a lot of younger gamers may not have. I expect hidden walls everywhere and it's gentle hinting at puzzles was both clever and requires a stronger attention span than you might expect. I don't think it should be dismissed for it's perceived short length, because it was pretty consistently wonderful.
@MoonKnight7
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it! I think it's a real gem on the 3DS and hope it gets the attention it deserves. Like I said before, it was bringing a smile to my face to discover all the hidden passages that were required to proceed. Two or three hours in, looking at the map and going thinking, man, there's got to be something there I missed! Then finding it, shaking my head and smiling, and thinking what clever bastards these developers are.
Sweet! I just recently played through Fairune I over Winter break and it was quite fun! Definitely my cup of tea since it incorporates puzzle-solving with pixel-graphics.
@the_shpydar
thats funny ive never heard of this until now. what are the odds it got my attention and then i scroll down and seen a comment of yours
@maceng if you have android tablet you can play Fairune for free. I highly recommend trying it on Android if you can. Its really good and satisfying for a short RPG. I used to think the same way and I'm glad I got this one.
@TurboTEF Me too! The first one was too good to pass on the second one.
Thanks. I'll be sure to check it out!!
By the way, it is free for IOS?
@denpa-ben Thanks for letting me know the game is free on iOS. Saved me a few quid.
I LOVED this game, and I've played it twice, trying to get the achievements. Yes, this game is a mix of Ys and Neutopia, and is short. However, the price was beyond reasonable for its length. Also, anyone wanting to compare this to Hydlide is wrong, the gameplay requires planning and dodging, the music is fantastic, and the art is super clean and cute.
One thing I will say is that the iOS/Android version is missing a few bonus things, including a challenging final boss and achievements. Also the iOS version is zoomed in a lot, while the 3DS version is zoomed out more and has better borders and menus. I highly recommend paying the few dollars/euros/yen for the 3DS version.
I hope it'll come out this year. If not, then thats okay i guess. a good game takes time.
