Re: Anniversary: The Legend Of Zelda Turns 40 Today - How Did You First Play It?

technotreegrass

I was 5 years old, browsing my older cousin's (he was 11) NES library, and a gold cartridge caught my eye. I was so used to gray carts that a gold one immediately told me "this was special." I pulled it out and the simplicity of the artwork reinforced the idea that this was going to be an epic fantasy adventure and I was all for it. I was so stoked when I booted it up. It was like an updated version of Adventure, one of my favorite Atari 2600 games. My cousin guided me around the map and the dungeons. He turned me into a lifelong Zelda fan.

I'm 40 now, and my cousin sadly passed away 5 years ago. Thanks for the great gaming memories, Brian. There's so many NES and Genesis games that I associate with him.

Re: Opinion: Against All Odds - Why Does RPG RNG Hate Me?

Sometimes I've tried to get a Shiny Pokémon by using items and other tricks designed to increase your chances of getting one to spawn. They never do, or perhaps I simply give up "too early" in the process after wasting two hours. I do have some Shinies, but they're either from Max Raids where Nintendo purposefully increased the odds, or a random Max Raid which I acknowledge could have been forcefully spawned by some hacker group.

Re: Splatoon 3's Chocolate Splatfest Returns Next Month

I don't think white ink teams would be so popular if white ink was part of the regular rotation of ink colors. Of the three, I do like white chocolate the best. However, my Splat mates have elected for Team Dark Chocolate, so I shall be fighting for my least favorite chocolate.

Re: Best Of 2024: As A Nintendo Fan, Do You Really Need To Play The Virtual Boy?

I played the demo unit at Toys R Us a lot. Wario Land was a fun platformer, and I found the 3D effect intriguing, but not nearly enough to ask for one, even when they went on clearance. Saved that money for a Game Boy Color instead and I made the better choice. I do wish they at least released Wario Land on the 3DS.

Should people play the original hardware? Maybe if a convention or a retro game store has one set up for people to try, just for the experience. If you can handle the 3D on a 3DS, that's a much better way to play.

Re: Random: Valve's Gabe Newell On Game Delays: "Late Is Just For A Little While, Suck Is Forever"

If a game is good at launch, people tend to forget that the game was initially delayed. Example: Red Dead Redemption 2 had several delayed release dates. Years later, no one remembers. But games with a bad launch, Assassin's Creed Unity, No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk 2077, people are still asking "is it playable? Has it been sufficiently patched?" Obviously, yes, those games are in a much better state now then at launch, but people remember.

Re: Anniversary: Happy Birthday To Nintendo's Ugliest, Most Indestructible Console

I wouldn't call it indestructible. The cartridge slot stopped working 2 months after the warranty expired. Nintendo refused to do anything for me. I replaced it with the New 2DS XL.

However, I will say that as a handheld, it was surprisingly quite comfortable to hold. The shoulder buttons were big and solid, a major difference to all other 3DS models. I had the sea green and white model, a pleasant color palette compared to the other options.

Re: Video: Is 3DS StreetPass Dead?

I thought Streetpass was dead in 2019. I could not, and still can not, register tags between my two 3DS systems and my friends' systems. Nothing is disabled. All systems work just fine and play games just fine. I can locally trade Pokemon between everyone's systems. We just can't register Streetpass tags. I thought Nintendo disabled the feature somehow.

Persona 5 Royal was a lifeline during the lockdown of 2020. I was able to simulate a normal lifestyle and "have a social life" of sorts with the Phantom Thieves. I extended the already long play time with extra hours spent grinding in Mementos and fusing Personas in the Velvet Room. When Persona 5 Strikers came out, I was vaccinated and carefully going back into my normal routine, but it felt like I was reunited with old friends and our adventures would continue.
