If you were to devise an ideal spin-off genre for the Pokémon franchise, there's every chance a cross-platform MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) would qualify as a particularly good idea. That's exactly what Pokémon Unite will try to deliver when it arrives on the Switch eShop on 21st July, with a mobile release set to boost the userbase further in September. It'll be free-to-start, unsurprisingly, with various microtransactions no doubt on offer for those that want to indulge further.
Yet the runup to release has been rather interesting. At launch its presentation got bombarded with negative reactions, potentially because fans were teased about a 'big project' and what we got was another free-to-play spin-off (we've had a lot of them over the years). The dislikes on YouTube came at a staggering level, with The Pokémon Company trying every trick in the book to get around them, eventually giving up and setting the original upload to private.

Based on some metrics though, including like / dislike ratios on other trailer uploads and broader videos on the game (like the one above), there's now quite a bit of positive anticipation for the game. As we've highlighted above, conceptually it's a potentially golden idea - the franchise is all about finding and then fighting with a range of Pokémon, so taking that formula into an online environment in which you team up with others makes sense. If you want to see enthusiasm for the idea there is plenty of it to be found.
That said, there's still a fair amount of negativity too, which we've seen in our own comments sections and around social media. There are varying factors - one is that Pokémon spin-offs very rarely get anywhere near the traction of the main games, with the exception of Pokémon GO. Free-to-play as a model isn't universally popular either, as the idea of being consistently targeted for microtransactions doesn't sit well with everyone. Then there's the genre itself, with MOBAs being hugely popular globally but nonetheless serving as a turn-off for plenty of gamers.

Another thread pops up a lot, however - Tencent. The media / publishing giant has one of its development studios producing the game alongside The Pokémon Company, which is highlighted by some as a reason to avoid it. The Chinese corporation (and its subsidiaries) have been investing heavily in global company shares and acquisitions - most recently UK-based Sumo Digital - to build its business. In many ways its activities in the entertainment business are little different to similarly aggressive corporate investment strategies from the likes of EA, Disney and Microsoft, but some do raise questions about Tencent's links to the Chinese government. You don't need to look far for media coverage exploring these links, and it's cited by some as reasons for them to avoid Tencent projects.
That's undoubtedly a rather complicated topic, perhaps more nuanced than a lot of the perspectives regularly shared online. But it is a factor for some, it seems, though perhaps consumers will need to get used to it - Nintendo works with Tencent for Switch distribution in China, and of course The Pokémon Company is working with the corporation on Pokémon Unite. With all of Tencent's investments and its influence we'll see its name on a lot more projects in years to come.
So, with all of that in mind, let us know in the polls and comments below what you think of Pokemon Unite, and whether you're planning to dive in when it launches on Switch.

No. Because it's Pokemon, that is all.
Nah. Mostly cause controller for a MOBA sounds like absolute hell. It’s hard enough playing League with a mouse never mind a controller.
Last time i played a moba, i felt asleep in the middle of the match.
I’d like the option to choose several reasons for my initial vote...
sure, by most accounts its really fun. i'll definitely try it, nothing to lose
Where is the "All of the Above" option?
No. I wish I had been able to select multiple reasons. It looks bad AND I don’t like MOBA games AND I hate free to play. Pokémon has really sucked lately in their business practices.
I played the Beta and liked it quite a bit, even though I don’t play MOBAs. Granted, the beta didn’t have microtransactions to bog things down, but it still felt a fun Pokemon game. Will definitely play it more on Switch with friends.
I personally have nothing against Pokemon Unite. However my League addicted friends have been trying to introduce me to the genre for years, and after seeing all the fits of rage they have during games I suspect it may be better for my mental health to keep on avoiding it.
Others already said it, but "I'm not interested in a MOBA-style game", "I don't think it looks very good", and "I won't play because of Tencent's involvement" are all great reasons not to play this. I do play F2P games, Magic the Gathering Arena and Mahjong Soul chief among them, but this one ain't my style.
Nope.
Not today, not tomorrow, not ever and will never want to play.
Say HELL NO to Free-2-Play business practice (with micro transactions on it) and MOBA style games.
Very unattractive efforts for making video games. 👎
@nessisonett a MOBA in general is no different from a Diablo-like and both Diablo 1 and 3 became better games in their transition to gamepad-dependent platforms. I see no reason why this should feel any different.
For the most part I have no interest in MOBA's because of both a community and a gameplay standpoint, neither appeal to me.
But the moment I saw Tencent? Oh hell no, I ain't touching that thing even with a 10ft pole. This might've been one of the few franchises to have gotten me to give MOBA's another chance but dabbling in business with Tencent of all companies is just asking for bad press. I have a moral obligation to not give Tencent the light of day seeing how close their link is to the CCP and what they stand for.
I personally find it disgusting but I will not slander those who choose to play this game without being aware of who Tencent is. If anyone does happen to be curious, I urge you to look it up as I'd rather not flood the comments with a written essay lol.
Have fun, those of you who were looking forward to this. Be responsible with your money.
I'm not into free-to-play games or games that just don't look very fun so no thanks.
Tencent's involvement aside, I'm just not into MOBAs. I don't play multiplayer modes in general unless it's with people I know and trust. Lack of time aside for waiting on online lobbies these days, I've had too many foul experiences with trolls. That's not to say I've never played with decent people, but I've had one bad session too many.
@Noelemahc Because kiting is infinitely harder on controller.
@Tyranexx
I think Yokai Watch Busters games on 3DS looks more interesting than Pokemon Unite, don't you think ? 😉
The only MOBA I have played in the past is the LOTR one on the PS3. I had a good time with that so I am willing to give this Pokemon variant a go.
Had enough of Pokémon
@Anti-Matter That game ruled all. Had a sick difficulty spike too.
MOBA gameplay, free-to-play model, and Tencent's involvement are all reasons for me to avoid checking this.
Pokémon games have had pretty bad history with free to play models and the mobile platform, which this game is intended for.
I love Pokémon! But I'm not into the spinoffs and I don't like MOBAs. I'm cool waiting for Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, that's the Pokémon experience I'm craving.
I'll probably give it a try, seeing the compact install size, but no telling if I'll frequent it. Fan snobbery, including sociopolitical concerns fandoms like to feign on occasions, thankfully isn't a factor in my case here, but lukewarm interest in MOBAs and lack of dedication to multiplayer titles in general very much are.
moba style games aren't really my cup of tea to be honest, a ton of my friends are gonna be playing it tho since they love League so here's hoping they have a good time
Dont see what all the hate is about. It looks like a fun, fair game.
I quite like MOBA's so will definitely be giving this a try but will likely be getting it on my phone/tablet rather than the switch - its WiFi stability isn't good enough for an always online competitive game (smite was horrible on Switch compared to other systems)
I don't do Pokemon. Give me a real RPG instead. Even if I did enjoy Pokemon, I wouldn't get it though. I don't do Free 2 Play games with microtransactions. I will quit gaming altogether before I support that model of game. I don't support microtransactions in any game.
people that´re not going to play because of "tencent involvement" are lying to themselfs lol, i bet they all play games that tencent have money on it... but hey i understand its 2021 everyone want the be a white knight and the good guy behind the keyboard XD
A MOBA has yet to appeal to me, but hey it's free. If I hate it, uninstalling is simple.
@Kensui I don't buy EA games, I stopped buying Ubisoft games when the allegations came out even though I was looking forward to the latest Assassin's Creed at the time, and I most certainly never touch games made by Tencent.
I understand you're one of those "it'll make money anyway xD" people, but understand that people who don't want to support awful companies usually mean it, whether it makes a difference to the overall result or not.
I'm fine with people going ahead and getting this game if they really want to, but mocking those who choose not to do so themselves is what we call obnoxiously disrespectful.
@Lordplops Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
@nessisonett kiting harder on console? Def depends on the game
I didn't like LOL and I didn't like Dota 2 therefore I just don't like MOBAs. Just because it's Pokemon doesn't change that
@Crockin Nothing to lose except your sanity as you become helplessly addicted to another MOBA.
@SonOfVon all those episodes of Steven Universe I've watched have given me a false sense of superiority.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Every Pokémon related release on the switch so far has been quite a dissapointment, I can't see Pokémon Unite being any different.
I don't like Mobas, but would try this if it weren't for Tencent. I'm looking to avoid anything with their involvement and SNK's going forward.
I'm not interested in MOBA games.
IDK how this poor title was hated so badly initially...it looks like a cool, fresh game to me, and I'm hyped to try it! ^^
Yeah I am looking forward to trying it. Not a big fan of microtransactions at all, but we'll see what happens.
I'll download it because it's free and could be fun.
@Sublogic idk i play mobas for about the same length of time as any other game depending on the depth of play
@moodycat Admittedly does sound more paranoid than it needs to be but they're not entirely wrong either.
Right now both the UK and the EU are heavily suspicious of China for launching what they accuse to be a large scale cyber attack by the CCP. Even the US is actually very wary of China right now honestly. Tencent is essentially the CCP under the guise of a large tech company that only grows larger with acquisitions and monetisation. China themselves had to give Tencent a slap on the wrist for acquiring "too many, too fast" as it makes them look suspicious.
If you know what goes on over in China and the quotes from the big man himself, it isn't hard to believe that China is indeed conjuring something up sooner or later. It's the Chinese citizens I feel sorry for the most.
@Anti-Matter I'd definitely play those over this, though Pokemon Unite is in a different genre than an action RPG.
Nothing against Unite in particular. I just find MOBAs boring.
I don't know why there is so much negativity. I wouldn't say I'm hyped but certainly hopeful.
@SeaFishelle - Alright, I admit...that actually is indeed quite concerning. :/
I don't play anything with Tencent attached, so this is a hard pass for me.
Ehh, I'll be trying it. I doubt I'll stick with it longer than a few days.
It's free, no harm in giving it a shot. I don't expect anything more than a waste of a couple hours. If I gave the terrible Genshin Impact a shot, why not this? lol
The kid reported my comment because I gave my opinion 🤣🤣 I'm recording a video this is going to be awesome, so if my opinion differs it's wrong xD
Yep, I can't wait to main greninja, I herd he works like a mage in other mobas and well, that role is my jam.
I will try it because it's free and it's Pokémon
I will try it. But I don't see myself getting that into it. Not really my genre of game.
I'm not interested in a MOBA-style game
It's free-to-play and I don't like that model
I don't think it looks very good
I won't play because of Tencent's involvement
ALL of these but I had to choose only one. I adore Pokemon, but I hate everything about this game
I find it disgusting on how angry, bitter and righteous people have become. Everyone can have their views and subjective concepts, but I have never seen so much negativity in communities that should be about having fun and spending quality time. It's sad how toxic these places have become.
Everyone has a right to not like something, but I don't care to being politics or things that don't pertain to the subject matter. I really dislike Ubisoft and how they've been pushing their games in the last 10 years, but if I truly held them accountable for their actions, I would have never gotten to play Immortals Fenyx Rising or any of the more recent Assassin's Creed games. While I don't agree with all the mechanics and micro transaction ploys within them, I can still find enjoyment in these games without giving them extra money. I don't have an addictive behavior in that sense where I'm compelled to give them extra money to boost some ability or get a skin.
And the fact remains, the Internet crazies only make up a small fraction of game sales. Everyone gets so butt hurt down voting and commenting on "Not my Pokemon!".. "I hate Tencent!".. "I hate MOBA!" Guess what? None of that matters. You weren't playing or getting the game, so your vote doesn't count. The companies aren't folding, because they don't have your $20-60. They know there demo and it's the casual audience.. they don't exist in forums, on Twitter or in YouTube comments. They see an ad or YouTube video.. they don't consume their lives with ranting and raging or hold a grudge against some corporate entity. They give zero ***** about any of those things, for better or worse, they dictate with their wallets.
Whether we want to admit it or not, fact still remains casual games still lead the market in sales and concurrent users. We're all ***** gamers, whether it's MOBA, mobile or a hardcore shooter. Stop trying to make everything so toxic. You don't like something, cool. Don't give it any more attention. Move on to something you do like and enjoy it. Believe it or not, you can actually be nice on the Internet. I know it's a far stretch, but try it one day.
@Abeedo Yep, mobas is best known for how toxic it is, I think the reason for that is bc one team mate can just Jack the game up for everybody, if they start feeding the other team, still, I wish they were nicer, So i'm not really around the moba fan base.
Chinese spyware on my Switch? No thanks, plus I don't like moba's.
@nessisonett It could work if you treated it more like a twinstick shooter. Also Switch has a touch screen you know.
@Snatcher That's the reason one of my friends moved from DotA to Street Fighter, so he would only ever have himself to blame.
nope not interested in the slightest,
1. don't like MOBA games
2. F2P is a big red flag for me
3. Tencent
I will try it but i expect nothing.
@thegametb
Except the article explicitly asks for opinions on just about everything you mentioned.
I had to comment because I have another reason:
I like that Nintendo is exploring more game modes and also the fact that they're working with some pre-tty wealthy companies with a lot of influence.
And maybe.. just MAY-BE: They learn a thing or two. To give them a nudge in the right direction.
Each time Nintendo acquires new partnerships, more developers join Nintendo's console. More developers on Nintendo's console, more need for a high end Nintendo console.
I mean, don't you want to see Mario, or Pokémon, shining in 4K?
@k8sMum It also stated if you had another reason to post a comment, not reiterate the poll questions.
I have little to no interest in the genre, and I think I'm over pokemon now. It's been a great ride, but the newer games aren't for me. I'm glad new generations can experience pokemon like I did in my childhood though

@thegametb
I find it disgusting on how angry, bitter and righteous people have become.
Goes on to make the longest comment full of anger, bitterness and self righteousness in the comment section.
I just don't like pokemon
Don’t play moba, don’t play Pokémon spin-offs, don’t like free to play/micro transactions, etc etc. After sw/sh, early trailers for arceus, and the move from bank to home, not likely to play main line pokemon either.
In the poll, doesn't look very good & I'm not interested in MOBA games are the same thing to me.
@thegametb Sounds like you're the one being angry and negative my dude. The people in these comments who are not playing this game have simply stated as much with their reasons why. Hardly anyone's telling you not to play it yourself.
If you think that comments being critical have no place on the internet, it's actually you who's being toxic. God forbid a platform that doesn't allow anyone to express their own forms of concern just because they dared to even question your favourite franchise or company.
@Snatcher It also might be that a match in a moba is a lot longer than matches in other competitive games, so the mistakes a team mate might name can really add up. That being said I agree that people really should learn how to control their anger, and especially not take it out in someone who may just be starting the game.
@thegametb
ffs man, you're the angry and bitter one here. Guess what? "Politics" can have a real-world system of consequences whether they affect you personally or not. And believe it or not, some people care about it, especially if they are affected by the issue in question.
And we should all challenge "freemium" gambling mechanics in phone games. Its not only wildly unethical (as it preys on children and those with existing problematic behaviors in regards to gambling), its damaging to the industry at large
So get off your high horse and stop condemning other people for having opinions and for sharing their opinions in an article where they are explicitly asked to share
@SeaFishelle Sounds a little too conspiracy theory for me tbh.
Yes, Because there is a distinct lack of mobas on consoles.
It's free, so... I think I've tried every free Pokemon spinoff so far and I gave up on each one. If they make a free-to-play game designed like a mainline game I might actually like it.
Nope, F2P mobile games are garbage, I generally don't touch them.
Absol is in it, so I’ll definitely check it out. Fingers crossed for playable Roselia added into the game.
@Abeedo 100% agree. But I also think its bc you do have people who do tend to feed the team.
@SmaggTheSmug It sucks to, Bc I love mobas but so many people don't like them on this site, and I can see why, I was playing three years of mobile legends just bc I was bored, I used no guids and just played for fun, but soon enough it actually turned to skill LOL.
@thegametb I know but politics can have an effect on a game, if your company has done some iffy things in the past, people have the right to not trust it, And I feel that there reasons for not trusting it, make sense, saying as they have also done things that have effect peoples lives a great deal.
I still think people saying they hate or dont like MOBAs should give this one a shot if its the only barrier stopping you. The MOBA mechanics in this game are very light compared to LoL or DOTA. Its definitely more of a casual experience
I personally have zero interest in MOBAs, so as much as I love Pokemon, I'm not planning to play this at all. I'd much rather see them bring back more of the old single-player spin-offs since Rescue Team DX and New Snap were both a lot of fun (Pokemon Conquest 2? A new Ranger? I'd love a remake of Explorers of Sky in the same style as Rescue Team DX as well).
I am not really interested in mobile games (with rare exceptions that don't hold for long either), I am also not really interested in MOBAs and I dislike Tencent very much.
So yeah...
I just somthing new to play to kill some time. that's all.
I've said it before but I'll say it again - the idea of Moba and Pokemon merging is still awesome. It has so much potential and could easily have dominated the MOBA space in a similar vein to League of Legends. Possibly even rivalling it. The pokemon brand is HUGE and widely known, and MOBA's are addictive and competitive fun. You can't get mess up that combination.
Unfortunately... they have. I can't believe I have to say this but... they literally did EVERYTHING wrong! It didn't even need to do anything unique or different to be a success. Just some sort of carbon copy of League of Legends, Arena of Valor, Smite - ANY OTHER MOBA and the game would have been great. If nothing else, the pokemon twist would have been more then enough to draw a crowd. But they stripped out everything that makes moba's interesting and just left... crap. Like, no towers? No minions? No equipment? What exactly is left? I couldn't even tell you. They didn't even try to go for type advantages and disadvantages which is one of the main mechanics that makes pokemon SO engaging to begin with. I dont know how they could possibly mess this up, and am surprised Tencent let it get to this point too, knowing how successful Arena of Valor is and why. But... here we are.
I have it downloaded already. And the only reason I did so was to grab Zeraora. I dont plan on playing it any longer then 5 games. I play Arena of Valor virtually every day and I love it to this day. So if Pokemon doesn't impress, I have little reason not to toss it aside. Hopefully they listen to fan feedback and add in everything that makes the Moba space so enjoyable. But I can't imagine that being for awhile... And thats the saddest part of all. By then, it'll be too late.
I voted "no" and "other'.
The other is because there wasn't an all of the above section.
@ThatNyteDaez I agree there are a lot of missed opportunity's, they could have done evolution waaaay better, in terms with how some pokemon can evolve in different ways, It would be cool if you could find a thunder stone on the map to evolve pikachu, bit if you do evolve it, you lose your speed, and instead of being an attacker, you become more of a tank, it would really change late game.
@Lordplops Seriously? Why because it's Pokemon?
@dBackLash What about New Pokemon Snap?
@mr-duster Ah you're right. I haven't personally played it since it itsn't my kind of game, but I'm glad people are enjoying it.
It does give some hope for future titles, since I really want Pokémon Legends: Arceus to be good.
@Noelemahc I don't think Diablo and a MOBA are totally different gameplay wise. With a MOBA you have to be way more patient and time your attack/skills, it required a lot more accuracy. I doubt a controller will give the same kind control over your character.
Diablo is all about rushing into enemy packs and spam skills till everythings dead. But even there I feel keyboard and mouse is the superior way to play Diablo.
I definitely will give it a try, a Pokemon MOBA is a perfect pairing on paper, how it's handled in practice is what will determine if I keep playing or not.
A pass for me.
Lost interest in Pokemon, don't care for MOBA and i care even less for mobile nonsense.
So, a perfect mix of nope and avoid.
at the very least i will get that free zeraora.
regardless, this is something i'll never install onto a phone
Lol people who won't play because it's tencent.....
@mr-duster why not?
@UltimateOtaku91 I just don't want to feel like a crappy person just bc I want to play a game.
Played it for 5mins and its now been uninstalled, found it tedious and dull, but had to give it a go since its Pokemon!
There are WAAAAYYY too many Pokemon games.
i hate tencent more than i dislike MOBAs. Death to tencent, the ccp and taiwan is country.
Buy pokemon snap, guys, that game has actual soul.
@Anti-Matter Well said. I really hate F2P games like this with microtransactions.. very greedy..
@UltimateOtaku91
I prefer Yokai Watch 1 - 3 on 3DS.
I find it funny that people complain about Tencent™'s involvement in this game (or any game for that matter) while waiting for their Amazon™ delivery, scrolling through Facebook™ on their Apple™ iPhone™, while eating a bag of Frito Lays™ potato chips.
Honestly, I think the whole Tencent question should have been avoided, because some people don't seem to be able to voice their dislike without resorting to some level of Sinophobia. I'm not the biggest fan of the government myself for sure, but I need a lot of people to remember that their own countries are white supremacy adjacent and rely on the exploitation of the southern hemisphere (primarily Black and Brown countries) to maintain their wealth and power in western society.
Definitely not against politics when it comes to video games, and I respect everyone who is against Tencent's will and right to not play this game, but I also don't think this was the platform to have this discussion, since this isn't a space where Chinese people can even defend themselves.
All in all, maybe everyone needs to worry about their own governments and their involvment with shady coorporations, because all of us have skeletons in our closet.
@Lordplops That doesn't answer my question.
@mr-duster 10/10 for observation.
@SeaFishelle Anti-China sentiment is literally the definition of sinophobia...
And I'm not sure if you thought I was talking about Trump when talking about white supremacy, but just in case, it didn't start, nor did it end with him. In the meantime, Black and Brown countries are still being pillaged by Western society, which is why I said people need to start taking a look in their own backyards (I am well aware of it myself, being part of western society as well). All I see here is fearmongering and borderline conspiracy theories, and this is exactly why I think Tencent should have been left out of this discussion concerning the game.
At the end of the day, this is still a video game website and while politics are subjects that can and should be touched in video games, this should by no means be the platform for these very important discussions. Because clearly they are not being handled with the care they deserve.
@Lordplops Still, doesn't answer my original question.
I love the game but when i play it it lags so it unplayable because my phone is old so please make it more smoother for old devices like mine. Make an option for it. Please😢
