Re: Talking Point: Will You Be Buying Any Game-Key Card Switch 2 Games?

spottedleaf

Rumored games I would be interested on buying on Switch 2 are Oblivion, Metal Gear Solid Delta, and Assassin's Creed Shadows, and if a game key card is the only way I can get those games then I will potentially stomach it. After all they function similar to how games on other consoles have for over a decade in my eyes.

But i'll definitely avoid games im not already intensely devoted to that id otherwise take a chance on with a regular game card. I will be making much less third party impulse purchases. I am buying none of the launch games other than Mario Kart and TOTK. Might have bought Bravely Default were it not for that

The main benefit of Nintendos cartridge approach to me was never reselling, lending, future serverless scenarios, etc, it was that I didn't need to use internal storage to play the game lol. There is a sense of tactile ownership that's lost as well with key cards.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card Release

@Misima It costs what i want it to personally because Im an adult with self control and I recognize predatory monetization models and stay away from games like that. Rewarding the game encourages them to try even harsher tactics on people who are predisposed to impulse control/gambling/addiction issues etc or who have bad dopamine pathways in their brain. Or children. who free to play games are inherently designed to exploit. That doesn't sit right with me in a more serious way than increasing game prices than 10 dollars for a premium first party nintendo game with increasing development & manufacturing costs

Re: Every Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card Release

@Misima I really don't wanna reward the free to play fortnite model, fortnite most especially, I'd recommend looking into the way fortnite is predatory. I'll pay 80 dollars for a game i feel is worth $80 and will buy used or on sale if I don't, and be more selective which games I buy. If video games are squeezing me into the poor house then I have bigger financial problems

Re: What If 'Bioshock' Was A Cute Puzzle Platformer? Say Hello To 'Power Sink'

spottedleaf

"What if Bioshock wasn't like Bioshock whatsoever" is a crazy headline (to promote an indie game which should stand on its own!)

Nintendolife does this kind of irritating cheap stuff constantly but this one has truly jumped the shark

Try "Cute deep sea puzzle platformer 'Power Sink' brings ruined mystery to Nintendo Switch"

I get that there is some SEO reason for this but there's a point at which this has a paradoxically negative effect on those who read the article from those SE conditions. By the way, it's only once in a blue moon I see a nintendolife article this way even though one of my primary uses of google is for Nintendo information. At best I see a NL review score searching a games title. Most people seeing this article are probably followers of nintendolife first before they search "games like bioshock" and try a puzzle platformer that bears no relation to their search criteria. It poisons the well (same as other cases but few this extreme)

Re: Fans Fight Back Against Nintendo Switch 2 Scalpers

spottedleaf

Ugh i understand why people are doing this but because i likely will end up paying a scalper for a console it makes me worry ill be able to do that or what will happen if i place my order then their post is removed. would i even get a refund. would i ever find a console.

Re: Talking Point: Does Switch 2 Have Nintendo's Best Launch Line-Up Ever?

spottedleaf

Honestly the switch 2 lineup is kind of crap. Judging purely on its own merits and the context of games at the time, i have to say that the gameboy has the most effective launch lineup for the type of product it was positioned as. SNES appears a good second.

So many later consoles truly have a lot of slop in their launch lineup, switch 2 included. Only mario kart and last gen ports is frankly Bad. It's about on par with Wii U. But many of those Wii u games were new games!

Re: Talking Point: How Does Switch 2's Launch Price Compare To Past Nintendo Systems?

spottedleaf

I'm lucky to be able to afford it but I agree with the sentiment that if wages haven't caught up with inflation then this is not apples to apples. Spending power has historically been a factor in console and game pricing and is why they haven't risen like this otherwise the market would be priced out. Now we are seeing the cracks and the economy and people's spending power is going to get MUCH worse in the US, after a period of sharp decline already. People are struggling and understandably anxious and frustrated.

Even with my income i'm shocked how little money i have left after I pay l for my needs. I was thinking yesterday that it's a blessing to even afford everything I need and have a little left over, MOST people struggle to even afford what they need let alone luxuries that hike in price and some have to choose between food and utilities. Housing is outrageous.

However because games have to be better and better, R&D and dev costs go up, tariffs and manufacturing costs, I just cant blame nintendo fully. It's a product of our society that wages have not caught up. I earn my money through self employment and I decide how much my labor is worth and how to position myself in the market, most have to fight to take the best they can get while the people at the top become ultra wealthy. It's their fault. Our society is built on exploitation of the "lower class" for the benefit of the "upper class".

Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime 4 Will Apparently Make Quite The Splash At The Switch 2 Direct

spottedleaf

@TheSaneInsanity It can have that benefit by being a launch window release (as it is by being 2025 at all, i genuinely think it could be month 2 and the second game released) with clear improvements on new hardware but being the flagship day 1 launch title will seriously kneecap both it and the console.

Thats not really how launch titles work historically, that was the gamble in the gamecube era (arguably wii u and 3ds as well) and it did not pay off.

Re: Retailer EB Games' New Retro Service Offers Some Unsurprisingly Rough Trade-In Prices

spottedleaf

Unfortunately video game specific retailers have been failing businesses for some time now and have to make revenue however possible like stingy trade in values, smaller markdowns on pre owned games from new, and the wall of funko pop and cheap thinkgeek merch taking up more floor space than game displays here in the US.

$12 for a DS pokemon game is outrageous when thatll probably be listed for $120 or more. Maybe they have to take into account that they know no one will buy it at that price LOL

Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime 4 Will Apparently Make Quite The Splash At The Switch 2 Direct

spottedleaf

Ive done a lot of thinking and Im confused why people would think MP4 and Mario Kart would be the switch 2 launch titles, the critical thing that will sell the system itself.

Metroid is a very niche franchise with narrow appeal, not even an exclusive, and will NOT move units. Mario Kart is a multiplayer game with a large casual audience who will be like "but we have Mario Kart at home with more courses, why should I pay $460 for this one?" Launch titles also serve word of mouth marketing (like BOTW or SM64 hype) so big meaty single player games are the way to go, a multiplayer game will not do that because the only thing to say is "its more Marko Kart, come play with me!" but its so expensive and there are always availability issues at console launch so "come play with me" "Im frustrated that I cant" is BAD publicity. Better to release a couch Multiplayer game when more have had a chance to get the console and gather for holidays.

And they would not launch together because Nintendo wants only one flagship release at a time. Theres no Zelda yet, it HAS to be 3D Mario, I see no way around it

Re: How Would You Rate The Pokémon Presents Showcase For February 2025?

spottedleaf

Im glad that Legends Z-A looks good (especially visually at this time) but disappointed by the "late 2025" release date not just because Ill have to wait longer (with my life situation...) but because for me its like a game drought right now since I dont care about Xenoblade X or Metroid and god only knows when and what switch 2 games will come after. I seriously need to be thrown a bone right now and this Pokemon Presents did not do that.

I thought for sure Z-A would be a May release since its a Known entity and theres a MASSIVE gap in the release schedule with no end in sight

Re: Talking Point: Our 2025 Pokémon Presents Predictions - What Are You Hoping For?

spottedleaf

@anoyonmus Precisely. With an extra development year the best we can hope for is an improvement over scarlet and violet if thats the style they are going for and yet still below the bar of first party nintendo offerings on switch.

Personally I believe its the style of game they are trying to make thats kneecapping them, when they made 2D games they were well designed and content rich and even lets go was very visually appealing in my eyes. Oh well. Since BOTW everything has to be a massive 3D open world since i guess that = better

Re: Talking Point: Our 2025 Pokémon Presents Predictions - What Are You Hoping For?

spottedleaf

@Ulysses I think a cross generation release for this game is unprecedented and Id doubt it would come. Game freak taking that extra time will hopefully just allow the game to meet a higher bar than scarlet and violet on the base switch given their apparent resources. Nintendo might want to showcase the improved fidelity of Switch 2 in their own presentation because they are VERY protective of their messaging, and even if there were a marginally better looking crummy visuals pokemon game, that would seriously damage the precious first impression, sorry to say

Re: Talking Point: Our 2025 Pokémon Presents Predictions - What Are You Hoping For?

spottedleaf

I expect only legends z-a and mobile game stuff. Its a long shot, but id very much like a mystery dungeon game. But with shiren the wanderer 6 only having recently released I feel this is tragically unlikely, among other business factors for spike chunsoft. Optimistically, I hope Z-A releases in May to fill the gap between Xenoblade Chronicles X and a likely summer launch of switch 2. Other leaked outings seem to be very early in development or even scrapped/stalled so I dont expect a new spinoff at this juncture

Re: Talking Point: What Would Be The Ideal Way To Play DS Games On 'Switch 2'?

spottedleaf

@batmanbud2 the "explanation" is that like i said before these games had bespoke controls programmed into them and were not just emulated raw. luigis mansion 3D is a remake. im not saying that they couldnt theoretically be reprogammed for different control schemes but that would fundamentally be a modified game. you couldnt just throw them all into an app as is and they wont just work with a switch controller the way its designed, to say nothing of the download and storage space burden

its far more realistic, and lucrative for the effort, to do exactly as youve alluded to: port them, do very slight remastering as in sunshine and pikmin 1+2 or metroid prime trilogy, or remake altogether as in luigis mansion or paper mario ttyd, etc, and sell these individually for a retail price point.

Re: Talking Point: What Would Be The Ideal Way To Play DS Games On 'Switch 2'?

spottedleaf

@batmanbud2 the controls in super mario sunshune in 3D all stars were completely bespoke to that release, really the controls in super mario sunshine were not truly analog per se, but rather had two states, "partially pressed" and "fully pressed" which could be mapped to the bumpers. thats not applicable to other games which may depend on actual analog input

Re: Talking Point: Would $499 Be Too Much For 'Switch 2'?

spottedleaf

I personally would PAY 500 for Switch 2, but I don't think it will BE 500, when the competition includes xbox series S and a digital edition PS5 or $350 steam deck. Not to mention the switch itself, the lowest model of which costs $200. Nintendo knows better, and the 3DS's pricing catastrophe will surely loom in their mind.

We know Nintendo will sell consoles at a loss or paper thin margin if need be but even then I don't think it will cost $400 or more to manufacture. The alleged internal delay to prepare a strong lineup of games makes sense in this context if all chambers need to fire on software attach rate to remain profitable.

I think the most likely outcome is $400, even though historically despite inflation theyve always launched home consoles at $300, I think its been long enough that in these economic conditions they will. But $500 would alienate their audience

Re: The Plucky Squire Physical Release Announced

spottedleaf

There are so many September games coming out that even a highly anticipated game like this I dont know if Ill have time for... Lollipop Chainsaw Repop comes out a few days prior, then Zelda a week and a half later... all while Im having very stressful move/life stuff going on...

I'll hold off for the physical especially since the Wii U/3DS eShop closure changed my perspective on digital games forevrr
