Re: Review: STEAM-HEART'S Saturn Tribute (Switch) - A Disappointing Return For A Notoriously Saucy Shooter

@Tom-Massey Okay bestie I never said the term used should be "intersex" I said the original term was likely to be "futanari" before some guy in the 90s localized it, which doesn't have the same baggage as "hermaphrodite" which has been used as a slur toward actual intersex people for centuries regardless of its denotation and so it catches real(!!!) people with stray bullets to repeat for no good reason.

There are plenty of other slurs that may appear in and around other media but you do not have to handle it this way in your reporting. There are countless ways you could have rephrased this information. "Both male and female" is just one of them? Maybe?

I get the sense you're deliberately missing my point and misconstruing my comments (and the sources you're patronizing me with) in order to avoid admitting you may have made a mistake so I'm going to drop it here. I was wrong, someone who doesn't understand a minority is best equipped to decide what is or isn't offensive.

Ban me if you like, I won't take this stuff laying down, I don't intend to use this site that i've frequented for 7 years anymore anyway and will suggest to my friends the same if that's the position of NintendoLife on this issue. Enjoy your Switch 2

@Oppyz666 Human beings develop their sex in the womb. Sometimes, for various hormonal or chromosomal reasons etc, primary and secondary sex characteristics might develop in a way that's not typical. Their genitals or bodies might look different than is expected and they might have coercive corrective procedures done to them to force them to align with a "normal" sex phenotype. If you want to learn more you should probably use the internet

The issue is that the term "hermaphrodite" has wrongfully and harmfully been used against people with these medical conditions, which makes it an offensive utterance, even if it's about something that isn't intersex

Re: Review: STEAM-HEART'S Saturn Tribute (Switch) - A Disappointing Return For A Notoriously Saucy Shooter

spottedleaf

@AussieMcBucket It's a bit like calling trans people "transvestites", the definition of the word is completely inaccurate but it's applied to trans people to cause harm. Therefore, it just shouldn't be uttered even if about a sexually motivated crossdresser because it carries confusion with and stigma/dehumanization to trans people. As has "hermaphrodite" historically been to intersex people. So it's best not to use the word about humans or human like characters /at all/ but I guess that's lost on him

Better to use an original Japanese term that doesn't have this context or just, I don't know, exclude this information entirely if it wasn't in the version of the game that he's reviewing in the first place 🤷‍♀️

Re: Review: STEAM-HEART'S Saturn Tribute (Switch) - A Disappointing Return For A Notoriously Saucy Shooter

@Tom-Massey The term "hermaphrodite" refers to something which does not exist but nonetheless has been used as a slur toward intersex people. Not so much for plants or animals in a biology textbook, but for characters maybe. Otherwise, why would the intersex society of america have an entire pamphlet about why not to use it? Lots of media or historical documentation may contain slurs but this is something that a reviewer, a third party, can choose to change/omit for sensitivity reasons 👍

I would especially stress this because mentions of Falla being a "hermaphrodite" we're actually REMOVED ("thoughtfully adapted," which you noted in your article) because they were offensive and "outdated"

I admittedly don't have the original Japanese or any material on hand that would necessarily indicate this but it's probable that "hermaphrodite" was a localization/translation decision for the exact term I suggested which also means having both male and female anatomy but doesn't have that baggage because it is a loan word that only refers to animated characters.

Also bears mentioning that "Hermaphrodite" is not a mythological CREATURE, it's derived from "Hermaphroditus" the son of Hermes and Aphrodite from Greek mythology

Re: Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Footage Shows 60fps Gameplay For Switch 2

@SplatRay001 Thank you! The "performance" complaint never felt like it hit the mark although people kept repeating it — its fundamental flaw is the atrocious textures and geometry, barren world, and lack of art style. Were those things better (as in Legends Arceus to a degree) I almost wouldn't care about framerate or resolution etc!!

Re: Review: STEAM-HEART'S Saturn Tribute (Switch) - A Disappointing Return For A Notoriously Saucy Shooter

spottedleaf

I pre-ordered this and have played it a little and disappointing is how I'd describe it. Given that the art is the main appeal, and much of it was removed (for obvious reasons) I'd say it's better to look at that elsewhere. Just wish the game was up to snuff, since it's always better in a full experience

Still, appreciate all of these Saturn Tribute releases, City Connection is a great publisher

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Listed As A Summer Game Fest 2025 Partner

spottedleaf

I do think they'd want to have some kind of presence because they're trying to launch the thing but i feel this is probably more promotional for release and previously announced products. This is not how Nintendo does announcements at all. Biggest possible outcome is a metroid or dk trailer, maybe with a release date and even then idk how likely

Re: Pokémon Scalpers Are Ignoring Tornado Warnings Just To Nab Latest Card Collection

spottedleaf

While attempting to shop for Pokemon cards at target my BF and I noticed that even the world championship replica decks were all gone, leading us to believe those were scalped by people unfamiliar with the PTCG trying to make a quick buck but completely unaware that those cards aren't legal and aren't worth anything.

We were once in an uber on our way to a local tournament with a guy who said he hadn't played the game since the late 90s and doesn't really care about it but tried to use reselling as a revenue stream.

Theres an obsession with personal gain and it's really dejecting as people trying to play the game.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Explains Why Donkey Kong Has Been Redesigned

I am definitely a fan of the new design whereas the last design contributed to DK being one of my least favorite characters. I'm still disappointed that DK took precedence over 3D Mario but the design is not a point of contention for me and if anything helps a little bit. Definitely fits more with the current era of Mario character designs and is more appealing and approachable

Re: Fortnite Devs Hit With Unfair Labour Practice Filing Following AI Darth Vader Fiasco

spottedleaf

My take is that if it was truly James Earl Jones's wish that his voice be used in perpetuity through AI, that isn't actually clear and from the limited information available, it seems like his family is making this choice on his behalf.

On top of that, and most importantly, it does not matter whether SAG AFTRA is suing for unfair labor practices for the sake of a dead man, the lawsuit is against this AI practice in general, which in theory can harm all living actors if allowed to propagate. This technology is dangerous.

Re: Nintendo: "Physical Games Are Still A Key Part Of Our Business"

spottedleaf

Sounds a lot like many third parties were not willing to bring their games to switch 2 unless physical releases were cheaper to produce (especially if 64gb cards were the only option this time), and also mercifully sounds like game key cards are not a part of nintendo's first party strategy.

also could have to do with how poorly compressed third party games often are, 64gb may not have been enough and rather than pay 24 dollars or whatever just to manufacture the cartridge this keeps something on the shelf at retail

Re: Talking Point: Are You Excited At All For Switch 2 GameChat?

spottedleaf

Because of personal issues i'm really averse to being recorded or on camera live and if I wanna call with a friend while we play games on occasion i'll use my phone.

GameChat is a /fine/ feature to add for those who want it but I don't think it's worth the hype Nintendo is trying to generate with it, a predictable but underwhelming reveal for the C button

Re: Nintendo Reconfirms Release Windows For Major Switch 2 Games

spottedleaf

@HatesCheese The bigger issue is that most of those are existing games that are years old, most early adopters of Switch 2 will have already played them and they are much less appealing to those folks. I say this as someone buying several of the Switch 2 edition games, they do not replace new releases in my view. Metroid arguably, Pokémon barely, certainly not the rest.

Honestly calling attention to that they are reselling older games makes the launch year feel more barren, not less.

Re: Talking Point: With Prices Rising, Are Your Gaming Habits Changing?

spottedleaf

Unfortunately as it is I buy more games than I ever end up playing so if I need to start buying only games I KNOW I want like a first party nintendo game, that's probably okay. A price increase to $80 at launch doesn't affect me as much especially if I stop making frivolous purchases. I think i've acclimated to the initial shock of the price increase. There are more important things to be upset about right now

Re: Reminder: Nintendo's Switch 2 Launches Worldwide Next Month

spottedleaf

I have a countdown widget front and center on my phone! Me and my boyfriend are going to the midnight launch (10PM June 4 in my time zone) to pick up each of ours at gamestop!!

Maybe it's crazy but today I sold my TOTK and Kirby Forgotten Land copies to pre order the Switch 2 editions, so we'll be playing both Zelda and Mario Kart. I wanna fill up my shelf asap!

Re: Game Devs Weigh In On Switch 2, And A "Much Better" eShop Is A Must

spottedleaf

@Princess_Lilly I do remember the other thread, since we probably shouldn't have too much of an off topic back and forth i'll try to say briefly:

If i did jump to conclusions about your viewpoint Im sorry. The western left wing is definitionally anti totalitarian and has only the goal of protecting vulnerable people from harm. So the suggestion that they are totalitarian is rooted in right wing distortions, since if those things feel totalitarian it can only be because it encroaches on a "right" to violate others rights, and saying so is repeating a dogwhistle even if you did so inadvertently.

Re: Game Devs Weigh In On Switch 2, And A "Much Better" eShop Is A Must

spottedleaf

Most concerned with the AI slop that's on the eshop. I think games produced using AI in that way should not be allowed period. I think for a game to be approved it must include 90% original human made content (to allow indies to use a few engine stock assets/licensed music)

No more 0 effort asset flip, no more AI. Honestly if someone wants to use original art to make an ecchi game so be it

Tragically difficult to enforce

Re: Editorial: Gamers, Support The People And Sites You Love, Before It's Too Late

spottedleaf

@Princess_Lilly It's a ridiculous assertion to say "leave marginalized groups alone and don't cause them direct harm" is a totalitarian view, or that to deny you the ability to persecute the weak is in some way persecuting you. These beliefs are fundamentally not equal and there are no "two sides" to them.

I would again recommend looking into the "paradox of tolerance" summarized by wikipedia like this:

"a philosophical concept suggesting that if a society extends tolerance to those who are intolerant, it risks enabling the eventual dominance of intolerance; thereby undermining the very principle of tolerance"

Philosopher Karl Popper puts it like this:
"a truly tolerant society must retain the right to deny tolerance to those who promote intolerance......if intolerant ideologies are allowed unchecked expression, they could exploit open society values to erode or destroy tolerance itself through authoritarian or oppressive practices."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance

As others have pointed out, no creative expression or work of journalism, even video games, is completely insulated from the culture in which they exist and all expression is inherently political for that alone. Even the act of deliberately avoiding a political statement is itself a political statement. And unfortunately for many groups facing life threatening harm right now, by right wing aggressors for no reason other than hate and selfishness and propped up by lies and fabrications, they don't have the privilege of pretending that life doesn't involve these things.

Art or a piece of journalism that includes such groups or affirms that they have a right to be here is incredibly vital right now. If that feels totalitarian to you then I urge you to examine yourself

Re: Editorial: Gamers, Support The People And Sites You Love, Before It's Too Late

spottedleaf

@DiggleDog More than placating people who don't want to exist in the real world, this complaint is from people who actually support those bad things happening and don't like being called out on it for being destructive. They don't want to see criticism of their terrible, sociopathic, reality denialist beliefs.

Theyre fine with an "agenda" being pushed as long as that agenda is their own fascism. To them though, it's not an "agenda" it's the "might makes right" one true way of the world, and any opposition can't be reasonable or accurate to the victims lived experiences, it's degraded as an "agenda" "intruding" on their vision for the world at everyone's expense.

The "agendas" they decry are usually just about minorities' right to exist and for people to live peacefully and have their basic needs for survival met. Being against human rights makes you a bad person, it's not an "opinion" that should be tolerated. Theres an idea called the "paradox of tolerance". If someone is so brain poisoned by Neo Nazi echo chambers that someone else minding their own business feels like a personal attack, they're beyond help.

The shuttering of these sites has nothing to do with this, but they'll twist anything back to confirming their worldview. And of course they'll say "oh this is the prevailing sentiment" repeated until it seems true. Its not.

Re: ICYMI: 12 Switch Games Will Receive Free Switch 2 Upgrades

@StewdaMegaManNerd 3D mario is the thing I most desperately want in the world. It was a shocking disappointment when we got DK instead last month. I want to believe it HAS to come on the anniversary. But after DK i can't be sure. I think it's the third most likely call and if it is announced I would see a Feb or March release

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Will Be Playable At An Australian Museum In September

spottedleaf

@-wc- There was a game called Mineko's Night Market, that many many many many many many years ago got announced, and I thought it was so cute, always checked for updates on it, sat on my steam wishlist, etc. It was re announced in an nintendo direct, then delayed once or twice AGAIN, and nearly a decade later it released and not only did I not care anymore and lost interest entirely, it apparently was underwhelming and had a lot of design issues or bugs. I never even bought it.

Suffice to say, there truly is a window of time that something you have to wait and wait for with no end in sight remains interesting. I don't care about Silksong anymore either. It was the kind of game as someone who doesn't like metroidvanias that I might have tried only on a whim. I wouldn't wait 7 years.

Maybe the longer you have to hopelessly accept not having something you want in your life you eventually stop wanting it

Silksong has become just a fixture of internet gaming discourse to me, the world without Silksong might as well always be, and it doesn't matter whether it finally releases
