Curious how this one will be. Outside Silksong, I’d say Air Riders might’ve been the best looking game at Gamescom for me, but… I’m not sold on buying another racing game so soon after MKW. I suppose I’ll wait for reviews.
Fantastic Direct, but I’m not 100% sure about how interested I am in the game. Seems weird for the Switch 2 to have two big racing games side by side year 1. The game itself looks well made, but I’m not a big racing guy and I sort of have had my fill with Mario Kart World with the genre. The curiosity of Sakurai helming the project drives my interest more than anything else. Might be a game to get for the kids? $70 is a bit high for a price for what I saw with the game though with MKW being so recent.
Watch this be a Direct for Kirby and Metroid Prime 4. 45 minutes seems a bit long for a single game. I mean, 15 minutes was enough to give us an in-depth look at Bananza, of all things.
@pawlslax Agreed. There’s no teaching or hand holding and it’s ultimately sort of confusing on how to steer or turn. The game reminds me of a Wii era barebones tech demo game that overdoes it with the motion controls, only this time with mouse controls. I dunno. I felt like the game wasn’t the most receptive to some of the actions I tried either. It sort of feels like a game that actually needs peripherals, but the peripherals don’t exist?
Probably 6/10. It’s interesting, but overall uncomfortable to play long term and it doesn’t have much in the way of longterm depth for a multiplayer game. It lacks the “Nintendo magic” in style, even if it has some in substance.
Death Stranding 2 and UFO 50. I get the feeling I’ll be saying that every weekend until I beat Death Stranding 2. Unless we get a shadow drop of something truly exciting at Gamescom, I think this might be a lock til sometime in September.
@Znake Arceus is an 83 on OpenCritic. Obviously, mileage will vary on any game, but most professional critics would agree that Arceus is a pretty solid Pokemon game. Honestly, Arceus might be my personal favorite Pokemon game. It’s either that one or HeartGold/SoulSilver. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it!
Personally, I’m glad Game Freak doesn’t listen to the “fans,” as I don’t think many of them are fans at all at this point. There’s plenty of Pokemon-likes for people that want an experience similar to Pokemon, but with the more niche-specific bells and whistles someone might want from previous entries. Pokemon reinvented itself in the X/Y era and has basically been more geared toward a younger demographic and families since then. I think some of the fans that are upset about what Game Freak is doing should think about it and maybe admit to themselves that they just don’t like Pokemon anymore.
If it’s anywhere near as good as Arceus, it’ll be one of the best games of the year.
X/Y was when I became interested in Pokemon again after losing interest in Gen 3, so I’m nostalgic for that era. Without X/Y, I wouldn’t know how great Gen 5 was, you know?
This game is a 10/10 for me. While not every game hits, there are so many actual hits here that I can’t not say that. Many of the games would be flat out indie classics if released on their own. Barbuta, Magic Garden, Bushido Ball, and Party House in particular are just incredible.
@boxyguy If Arms would’ve been allowed to tell more story, it would’ve fleshed out the experience a lot. A sequel with a proper story mode (even if it’s a visual novel between matches), would’ve been a huge thing to developed that world and game. It honestly deserved it. Outside myself, I don’t know anyone personally with a Switch that didn’t buy Arms and didn’t sell it early in the console’s lifespan.
@boxyguy Hot take on a Nintendo site, but I didn’t think Arms was worth full price in 2017. I say this as someone that liked the gameplay too, but there just wasn’t enough content there in comparison to other fighting games. Splatoon, on the other hand, is absolutely worth full price.
To be on topic with Drag X Drive, based on the global test, I’d say it’s probably a 6/10 game if there’s nothing else to it. It reminds me a lot of the Wii era experimental games that care more about their gimmicky gameplay than being an actually good total experience. The gameplay is unique and interesting, but it’s also not exactly fun and it requires time to adapt to it. I played for maybe an hour or two and that was all i needed. I’m a Welcome Tour apologist and felt like that was worth the money even for what it was, but, honestly, if Nintendo wanted Drag X Drive to succeed, THAT should’ve been the free game for the Switch 2.
My biggest gaming regret is that i never acquired a copy of Chibi Robo. I’ve played most everything I’ve wanted to play over the years, but this one (and Doshin, among very few other games as of now) has been elusive to me and i am over the moon that this one is coming so soon. I expected other GameCube titles before this one, so this is very pleasant news. This is definitely the next Switch 2 game I’ll be playing (outside continued bursts of UFO 50, of course).
Not planning on it. I enjoyed the playtest for about an hour and that was enough. The controls were the challenge for me. It sort of cramped my wrists and I had a hard time having the character move how I wanted them to move. It was a neat experience, but it reminded me of something that frustrated more than delighted from the Wii era, honestly.
I usually love the goofy and weird novel games, but I saw this one and wasn’t interested at all. It could be because I don’t see much of a reason to want the camera currently, I suppose, but I’m really wondering who exactly would see this game and be excited?
9/10 for me. Almost every game looked interesting to me. Best Nintendo showcase since Nintendo announced Mario Wonder. Bought UFO and Is This Seat Taken immediately after the showcase aired (and I’m contemplating maybe buying another shadow drop because I was just so impressed with the lot of these) and have already played the Mina the Hollower demo, which was fantastic. Usually these indie showcases have a bunch of games that look like mobile game junk and fluff, but this one was varied and high quality. The Switch 1 launched with a massive wave of fantastic indies and it looks like the Switch 2 will be doing the same. 2018 lived by a bedrock of fantastic indies and 2026 looks like it’ll do the same.
It’s honestly been sort of a while since I’ve felt so happy about a showcase, even if it was missing Hades, Witchbrook, and Silksong. But missing those… actually… that just made the release schedule that much better this year with other things!
I want Mina, Tanuki, UFO, Witchbrook, Silksong, Hades, and Mousework. Would be a legendary showcase if we got all of them. I’m expecting… not this though. After the last couple Directs, I need to let my expectations stay at zero until I get proof it should be otherwise.
@MrCarlos46 I hope for a Mario Maker 3 because I want the same thing and I also want a new campaign. The “story mode” in 2 is one of the best games I’ve ever played and that’s not even the real meat of the game.
I just want Mario 35 back… I loved that little game. Played it almost every day. Crazy to think it came out that long ago…
Quick question: why do we seem to want Switch 2 upgrades of existing games instead of new games? Super Mario Maker 2 Switch 2 Deluxe? Nah! Super Mario Maker THREE!
@roy130390 I… am not sure which one will be better. I sort of feel like Shinobi will have better combat and Ninja Gaiden will have better platforming. I have a feeling they’re both going to end up 8/10s for me personally. I’m about halfway through Ninja Gaiden right now and I am really liking it and really liked the Shinobi demo too. I think they’ll be on pretty level footing. Not a bad thing to have two ninjas return in solid games a piece.
I miss the era when having release dates on games was industry standard. As of right now, the only game I have preordered is Pokemon and my only other 100% I’m getting it at launch game is Mina the Hollower and that feels weird to say in early August. And as I say that, I question if Mina is even confirmed for Switch? And there’s games I want in 2025, but no release dates. It just feels wrong and makes me feel like nothing is coming out any time soon. I don’t like this strategy at all.
Ready to give you my money whenever you want to take it, Nintendo. Call me crazy, but I’m ready to be some new games for my new console.
For me, I haven’t tried Handy Hockey yet, but I’m going to try it today. I’m pretty excited for it.
I blasted through A Dream About Parking Lots and Time Flies and I liked both of them. I’m still working on Ragebound, but I think that’d be my pick, even if I think it’s slightly overrated at the moment by the online discourse from what I’ve played so far. It’s maybe an 8/10 for me so far, but… it also reminds me of how much The Messenger is now the high bar for ninja games.
Maybe I’ll get back to Death Stranding 2 after putting it on hiatus for Donkey Kong Bananza. Realistically, I’m in no rush to play through it though, as I gotta be honest… that release slate in August and September isn’t calling my name right now.
Outside that, it’ll be Ninja Gaiden Ragebound and Time Flies, which I started both yesterday and it doesn’t seem it’ll take long to beat either of them.
@molkom I just wish they’d be more transparent a little bit and that the indie scene would get us updates. It doesn’t help that we had “leaks” that were far more exciting than what we got. Nintendo being oblivious to all the noise and then dropping one of the flattest Directs of all time and just moving on is probably the most obnoxious thing about Nintendo right now. I know the WiiU era was rough, but the release calendar looked more robust on that platform this far into its life in comparison to Switch 2, for me at least. I dunno. Personally, I just like having things to look forward to and I’d rather see a delay than have no idea, just so I can plan ahead or be more excited about certain moments in the future?
@Bigmanfan Yeah, I try to play about 2 games a month or so (depending on the games, of course), so if I don’t buy a game in a month it feels noticeable to me, I suppose. I have things to play right now, but I’m at a point where I’m wondering how long I need to stretch out what I’m playing, you know? 2024 and 2025 I’ve bought the fewest games I’ve ever bought, feels like. It’s good for my pockets but bad for my drive to beat a lot of games! Lol
@Xansies They feel unique to me, but definitely made by the same team. There’s some style similarities, but the way both games function feels totally different to me.
October 16-Pokemon Legends: Z-A Katamari 31–Mina the Hollower
Winter Hollow Knight: Silksong Witchbrook
Unknown Hades 2 Kirby Air Riders Metroid Prime 4
Maybe August 28–Metal Gear Solid Delta 28–Shinobi
September 25–Silent Hill F 30–Final Fantasy Tactics
October 3–Ghost of Yotei 10–Dreams of Another
It’s not that there’s nothing I want. It’s more that I want to have updates on the games I’m waiting on. Something, anything. But yeah August and September are dry and honestly there’s been some dry months earlier in the year. I think I’m just cranky because of that. I’m still feeling jet lagged from years like 2023, which was absolutely incredible maybe?
@Bigmanfan the last maybe 2 years have been rough for announcements for me and I’ve gone long stretches without having much to play. I dunno. The Direct was just so underwhelming to me and basically told me that I’m going to be adding very little to my gaming landscape from now until October, you know? I like to buy 1-3 games a month and I’m down to 1-3 games a quarter now. I know I’m going to have too much to play at the end of the year too, which sort stinks when I’ve had some months where I feel like I’ve barely played games due to an empty release schedule.
Might grab Shinobi, but seriously this is a weak line-up.
I may grab FF Tactics too, but I dunno. I’m starting to get tired of buying games I’ve already played and purchased in generations past. Tactics is a classic, but I feel sort of tired of purchasing remasters, playing them for a few hours, getting my nostalgia fix, and then moving on.
@Suketoudara I get that, buuuut…. I literally am less excited about Switch 2 after that Direct yesterday, which is the opposite of how I felt about Switch 1 in those early Directs. Even if Prime 4 was far, far delayed, at least there were more games to get excited about. Right now, I… can’t say that I have a release date for anything I will for sure buy on the console. Maybe Katamari, actually. It’s weird though. I just want to have some hype, you know?
I don’t care about ports at all and even the ports were weak in this one. My wife said to me yesterday, “Feels like it’s been forever since a Direct and it still feels that way.”

Fantastic Direct, but I’m not 100% sure about how interested I am in the game. Seems weird for the Switch 2 to have two big racing games side by side year 1. Re: Nintendo Reconfirms Release Windows For Major Upcoming Switch 2 Games
@Bigmanfan this is my “wish list”
August
September
October
16-Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Katamari
31–Mina the Hollower
Winter
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Witchbrook
Unknown
Hades 2
Kirby Air Riders
Metroid Prime 4
Maybe
August
28–Metal Gear Solid Delta
28–Shinobi
September
25–Silent Hill F
30–Final Fantasy Tactics
October
3–Ghost of Yotei
10–Dreams of Another
It’s not that there’s nothing I want. It’s more that I want to have updates on the games I’m waiting on. Something, anything.
