Re: Sonic Mania Plus Becomes The Highest-Rated Sonic Game In 25 Years

sauce

Sonic Mania was a dream come true for this long-time Sonic fan. It more than made up for the disappointment that was Sonic 4. I see a lot of comments in this criticizing the level design-- I feel like maybe some of those don't understand what Sonic is all about. It is a platformer, but people look at it and compare it directly to Mario, which would seem fair at first, but the comparison falls apart upon further inspection.

Mario (and other platformers of that time like DKC) are course clear games where you can almost always find every secret in one run, maybe two. At maximum, you'll have one branching path to the sky or to an underworld, and perhaps one or two secret exits. Sonic, however, has a multitude of branching paths and options for players, which can seem overwhelming if you are expecting to stop and explore each one, which is NOT the way to play Sonic. During a run through, you are technically always making a choice to use one path INSTEAD of several others, which is such a different experience. The levels make perfect sense, and I would argue they are NOT a mess as many commenters here are saying, but rather that they just require a less completionistic playstyle.

@WaveBoy "The reality is, sonic 1-3 were never good games."

The reality is, millions of people disagree with you.

I respect that you don't like classic Sonic games-- you don't have to. But that doesn't make them bad games. For example: I hate Counterstrike for a lot of reasons, but it's at least a well made game. It's just not for me. Sonic 1-3 are classic icons of the genre that had a major influence on platformers in both style and substance. The evidence of the continued praise, re-releases, huge fanbase, and millions in sales for Sonic Mania show that they are anything but bad games.

Yeah some of the issues here are kind of glaring and unacceptable. BUT! The core mechanics of this game are so fun. I knew the issues going in, played a bit with a friend who bought it day 1, and decided that it was something I still wanted to play. And man it's been fun! Even despite those issues, the gameplay is so damn good.

Re: Poll: Is Your Nintendo Switch Cracking Under The Pressure?

I have had my Switch since launch night and have had none of the issues reported yet. I think there may have been a few bad batches of plastic, sort of like with those early SNES consoles that turn yellow. With as many people as this is happening to, it's clearly a problem, but with as many people as it's NOT happening to, it makes me think it's less of a design flaw and more of a problem with the manufacture of some of the early components.

Any of you guys ever heard of Netflix? You pay 9.99 a month for movies you won't even own after they decide to take them down or you cancel your subscription! What a bunch of bull, right?

If you want the old games to own there are a BAJILLION ways to get them and play them, the SNES classic being only one recent example. I get that it would be great to have the option to purchase, but some of us really like the idea of enhanced games on a Netflix style service! I own most of the older games in their original carts so this service appeals to someone like me. Maybe it doesn't to you, but that doesn't make it a ripoff ya' big crybabies

Re: Nintendo's Share Price Plummets In Response To E3 Direct

Acting like Smash isn't going to sell Switches because it didn't sell WiiU consoles is disingenuous! The Switch is a better console with more to offer that has a great reputation and excellent marketing. It also has way more games to play than Wii U had at the time of Smash's launch! Plus, Pokemon Let's Go appeals to a pretty broad audience and I think will bring in some GO players. Nobody likes to predict the death of Nintendo more than Nintendo fans, but I don't see this Xmas being anything short of great for Ninty.

Re: You Can Pre-Order Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu! and Let's Go Eevee! for Switch Already

Very excited for this. Pokemon Yellow was my first pokemon game, and my first Gameboy game. I still have my old Pokemon Yellow GBC, and I've played through Yellow three times (probably another one to get prepped for this new release). So that game is really special to me, and to see an HD remake that looks like what I imagined Pokemon would become when I was a kid is really cool. Plus all these new ways to play seem really neat too! Day one purchase for me.

I will buy this game either way, but I'd be floored and giddy if this was an expanded and more fully realized Kanto game. Before you start yelling at me about being a Genwunner, keep in mind that I played and loved GS&C, X&Y, B&W, and Sun and Moon. Being able to play through Kanto again though in a much bigger and more complete world would bring tears to my eyes.

Re: Steve Wiebe Recognised As First Million Point Donkey Kong Record Holder As Billy Mitchell's Scores Are Nuked

Y'know, the biggest cheater in my neighborhood beat me at Goldeneye by screen-looking 12 times. The biggest cheater in the state won a friendly smash tournament by giving his buddies broken controllers, but you don't know his name, do you? But it's Chad Leonard. Billy Mitchell though, everybody knows his name. He cheated in Donkey Kong to get the first high-score over a million points. So there's a level of difference between people, and that translates to some games.
