A brand new trailer for Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom has landed, showing us exactly what we can expect to see when the game arrives on Switch this summer.
This colourful action-adventure game has been made alongside Ryuichi Nishizawa, creator of the original Wonder Boy in Monster World series on Sega platforms, borrowing the best aspects from that classic series to deliver a fresh, modern adventure. The game seems to be in high demand for Switch users, with recent data showing that pre-orders for the title on Nintendo's console were ten times higher than those on PS4 - a pretty hefty difference.
Can Jin save Monster World Kingdom? You'll be helping the young hero to defeat challenging enemies, discover hidden locations, upgrade powerful equipment, and lots more besides. You'll also unlock special forms with unique skills used to open new paths where mighty bosses and secret treasures await.
As mentioned above, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom will arrive on Switch "this summer", with a physical release also coming exclusively to the US and Canada.
Now then, make sure to let us know if you're excited for the game in the comments below, and excuse us while we go around the office singing "Monster Boy, fighting for a future made of love and joy" for the rest of time.

Looks great!
That’s be honest, that looks top notch. Can’t wait for that
This looks really great. I really enjoyed The Dragon's Trap on Switch, but I think this looks quite a bit better. I'm also glad they announced up front a physical release was coming. I would have liked The Dragon's Trap physically, but not enough to purchase a second time. Will be getting this one for sure though.
This looks superb. Super impressed so far.
Looking spectacular!
It looks so good, will be there on day1.
Looks great! Though I liked the more sketchy, manga-inspired Euro-comic art style of Dragon's Trap more, this looks like a great follow up to that, both visually and mechanically!
Waiting for reviews.
I can't stand the music, personally
Been looking forward to this for ages. Is there a release date yet?
"North America and Canada."
Canada is very much a part of North America. That is like saying the game is coming to Europe, and France.
I loved the first Switch release in this series, but this trailer music is making me second guess getting this game. Is this song in the game? It better not be haha
THIS is what we should be supporting with our gaming dollars! This level of polish and quality in both gameplay and presentation is what helps push the industry forward. Supporting mediocracy with our dollars gets us a load of games with graphics and gameplay that cant hold a candle to games made 30 years ago. Supporting games like this, sends the message that this is the bar. I want more games like this!
Looks really good. I want
Huh...I didn't know this was a game I was wanting until now.
Looks absolutely excellent! Seems like a great evolution of those old games and I can't wait to play it. I also love love LOVE the anime cutscenes.
Wow - it looks even more amazing than I thought! So glad I have it pre-ordered on Amazon. There simply aren't enough quality 2D platformers around. I hoped Nintendo might port New Super Mario Bros. over, or even produce a new one...but if other developers want to produce this level of quality, I'm so in.
But that song in the trailer though....why? Ruins the trailer.
Getting it
@itslukec I think since Trump was elected they’ve tried to put a bit of distance between Canada and ‘America’. It’s the national equivalent of the uncomfortable body language that you’d make if someone you went for a night out with got incredibly drunk and started loudly making inappropriate comments that are getting increasingly racist. Ideally you just want to get out of there before it goes really South but you’re trapped in the corner so the best you can do for the time being is shift your shoulders away and give the impression that you didn’t choose to be there in the first place.
Day 1!
I was one of those who got monster world on switch, and it was great, and this looks even better!
Seemed great until I heard the music. Please tell me this isn’t the actual in-game music, right?
I [BURP]ing gotta get this!
Instant hit for sure, both game and song! Perfect follow up for Dragon’s Trap after trully 100%ed the game.
@StuTwo No that's not it.(Although not a bad idea) I think Europeans don't realize that the United States of America is a country found within the continent of North America.
@AcesHigh Great point, that’s why the only port/remakes I purchased so far are Mario Kart and Dragon’s Trap. I can still put money on smaller games but will be small money as well. We definitely need more of this type of execution in the eShop. Bravo!!
Please let this game get a physical release, do that and you get more of my money just like Dragon's Trap.
Amazing, day one.
The game looks fantastic that song playing with the trailer is just the worst, its awful I hope that is not the music to the title or at least there will be an option to mute it .
@itslukec It's the same reason people always says "Europe and the UK". I'm not sure why they do that...
Looks solid— but on a matter of taste I gotta say those French lads nailed the art style so perfectly with Dragon’s Trap that this feels a bit gaudy by comparison.
C'mon people, have some common sense. If it's the same studio, the music in the trailer is not part of the game's soundtrack - at least in-game anyway. We can expect a wonderful eclectic remixing of the original game's music. ...I hope.
@retro_player_22 This game announced it was physical before Dragon's Trap did, I think. I've had a pre-order at Amazon forever.
@Francema Yup! You know, I remember growing up with each generation of hardware, starting with the 2600, but really starting with the NES, always being so eager, excited and (dare I say HUNGRY) to see how much better the next console on the horizon will look and play. What's this Sega Genesis thing coming up? OMG! That looks incredible! Huh? SNES is next? How much better will that look? N64? $650 NEO GEO?! HOLY CRAP!
I think we've lost that magic. Its there still but the drastic jumps in fidelity aren't the leaps and bounds that they used to be. And with the popularity of cheap indie games, I feel like a huge step backwards is being made. Maybe because a lot of gamers today haven't grown up with that sense of constant evolution and advancement and demand for "more bits, more colors!". Everything back then was trying to catch up with the fidelity of the arcades. Now that arcades are no longer the golden ring for us to reach for...
But seeing games like this and the work of Wayforward and (of course) Nintendo and other major 3rd parties does bring a bit of that "looking towards the horizon" thrill back to this salty heart! Good work and keep it coming!
@gauthieryannick What about Denmark, Iceland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Norway, etc...?
This is cool. But will do like Dragon trap, where the price went from $39.99 to $25 soon after release. Get it at that point.
@AcesHigh I agree and been there as well. My only adjustment to that is, if indies/3rd party would like to take over the eShop go ahead but you better get pricing right for your ports, remakes, 8bits and other easy to deliver with hopes to cash some games.
@Francema I'd support that statement too - if Nintendo had a re fund policy like STEAM. But they don't. I have bought a large number of indies (I don't make my argument without an objective effort to see the other side) and I'd say, easily 90% are steaming heaps that I'll never touch again for many reasons each. Which is why i'll continue to back games that at the very least have qualities that I value and that I can see from a screenshot or video - qualities that I believe move the medium forward. Not a certainty of backward movement. 8.5bit is a lazy excuse for not seeking out the financial backing and talent to move the medium forward and most definitely backward progression. Even $7.99 is too much for an unknown experience to have faith on the fact that there may be something else that is rewarding other than the graphics. I want both for my $$.. and I don't like to encourage the development or sale of anything that doesn't move us forward. Just my .02. We have to be careful of how we set the stage for the future in these days where everyone gets a trophy... Rewarding mediocrity can set a dangerous prescedent for the health of our future.
Love that anime style, looks great will definitely get this.
Really enjoyed Monster World on the Megadrive when i was younger too. Hope there's decent challenge spread out as well, Monster World went from like 5 to 10 on the difficulty scale on just the last boss alone.
I love the graphics, but the gameplay... Meh.
The art has come come a long way, though I’m still of two minds about it’s consistency, something you can’t take away from the Dragon’s Trap remake, but also I’m just hyper critical. The spirit of wonderboy is certainly there.
I've been following this one for a while. I first became familiar with the series when I was a tween and discovered a Sega Master System and Wonder Boy 3 in a closet.
Monster Boy looks amazing, the amount of polish its received over time has made it look better and better every time I've seen it. I'm very impressed.
That theme song!
I can't wait for this, this looks so good! I love games like this, 2D with Zelda-like upgrades and at least some exploration, if not full-on Metroid levels. Plus, the movement and animations look slick, absolutely bursting at the seams with personality...definitely seems like it'll be worth the wait.
This looks amazing
Anyone else think Thundercats for that one character with the red hair?
Wow that looks fantastic! Price seems steep for 15 hours but I'm sure it'll be on sale during the holidays!
Daaaaaaammmnn....added to wishlist
@Tim_Vreeland I may had missed that then, I'll look into it.
@AcesHigh very true...
Seems like another win for the series.
Looks absolutely frikkin amazing. I've had this pre-ordered since day one. As a huge Wonderboy fan I wouldn't miss this for the world.
Looks fantastic. But we already knew that!
