Sega has revealed that Sega Mega Drive Classics will be making its way over to the Nintendo Switch later this year, bringing some exclusive features along for the ride.
That's right, the Sega news just keeps coming; we've just seen Puyo Puyo eSports be confirmed for Switch, the first two Sega AGES titles are releasing this week, and now we've had confirmation that this classic compilation is arriving on Nintendo's newest console, too. If you're unfamiliar with the game, Sega Mega Drive Classics released on PS4 and Xbox One earlier this year, giving retro fans the chance to play through over 50 titles split across multiple genres. There are arcade action games, shooters, beat ’em ups, puzzlers, and various other hidden gems, all with a raft of modern features included. (We've provided a full list below).
Before that, though, we thought you'd like to know more about this new, fancy Switch version's exclusive features. Players will now be able to compete in a same-screen local co-op mode using one Joy-Con each, and will also have access to the previously released modes and features like online multiplayer, achievements, mirror modes, and rewind and save states.
Now then, without further ado, here's that all-important list of games.
- Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
- Alien Soldier
- Alien Storm
- Altered Beast
- Beyond Oasis
- Bio-Hazard Battle
- Bonanza Bros.
- Columns
- Columns III: Revenge of Columns
- Comix Zone
- Crack Down
- Decap Attack
- Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
- Dynamite Headdy
- ESWAT: City Under Siege
- Fatal Labyrinth
- Flicky
- Gain Ground
- Galaxy Force II
- Golden Axe
- Golden Axe II
- Golden Axe III
- Gunstar Heroes
- Kid Chameleon
- Landstalker
- Light Crusader
- Phantasy Star II
- Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
- Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium
- Ristar
- Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
- Shining Force
- Shining Force II
- Shining in the Darkness
- Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
- Sonic 3D Blast
- Sonic Spinball
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Space Harrier II
- Streets of Rage
- Streets of Rage 2
- Streets of Rage 3
- Super Thunder Blade
- Sword of Vermilion
- The Revenge of Shinobi
- ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron
- ToeJam& Earl
- Vectorman
- VectorMan 2
- Virtua Fighter 2
It's interesting to note that some of the games included in this game are also being released separately as part of the Sega AGES range, so you might want to compare both collections and weigh up the pros and cons either way before making a purchase. Either way, though, the Switch is about to be home to an incredible amount of Sega goodness.
The game will release both digitally and physically this winter, with pre-orders from some retailers expected to go live today in Europe and North America.
Are you excited by this one? Do you think you should have just about enough Sega content to last you for the foreseeable future? Let us know below.

Now this is worth it to have on the go.
WOW! I want! Just for the three Golden Axes alone!
Also Altered Beast (Rise from your grave!)
Is Columns II a thing? I have never seen it in one of these collections.
Revenge of Shinobi!
It was about time! Now Disney Afternoon Collection... pretty pleeeeease, Capcom
You can release collections on the Switch after you launched it on other consoles first?!! Take notes Capcom.
good one. This is a get. There is our VC.
Oh, thank god. I thought we weren't going to get this.
Will get the physical version for the go, but it still has no Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
yay Landstalker! but no Rocket Knight Adventures or Eco is a downer
Is it worth buying Sega Ages this week if this is happening?
@LinktotheFuture I think it's supposed to be one the Sega Ages games...but it's weird that they left it out here....
Doesn't this just make Sega Ages useless
we still need secret mana localized. comon sqeenix we want more retro!!
Day one purchase!
Great stuff
You see Nintendo. See how people are excited here. 50 games. Not 20
Oh, so we CAN overlap releases. Interesting. Were there any other technical issues with the other console releases? I sort of remember hearing something about the online co-op being wonky.
Just as well, I'd rather have the SEGA AGES versions because I know M2 won't let me down. Their ports are top notch, and over the top (and not just ROMs in a wrapper).
(edit)
SEGA AGES games are, or will be, better versions of some of these Gen/MD titles...That is, if performance is important to you. (I explain further down in the comments)
Strange that they've left in the OG Sonic when they're planning to sell it in the Ages range.
I know that the Ages version is technically an advanced port, but hopefully this doesn't hinder sales.
I'm happy to get all my Phantasy Star and Streets Of Rage in handheld form.
I'm glad this is coming to Switch, but the lack of Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles makes this a pass for me. It's a real shame, as I love the idea of having a complete collection of Sega games for Switch.
Interested to see what else is in store for SEGA Ages, I'd just like all of the Sonics, Gunstar Heroes and (though it's unlikely) King's Bounty which was one of my all-time favourites.
The emulation on these is absolute garbage.
Sound is way off, massive input lag and the online is a joke.
You're better off with SEGA AGES.
This is actually a nice value pack. I'm going to buy this.
Isn't this the same collection that was released on PS4 and XB1 and the games didn't run properly or something? Either way, I'm good with the Genesis collection I already have and will just get the arcade version of Gain Ground when it releases via Ages
Still missing S3&K
@BladedKnight Can't fit your PS4 in your bag though....
Ok yeah! Sword of Vermillion! I havent got to play that since I owned it on the original system. An underrated RPG gem!
This is an incredible collection to have on the go. Nomad, eat your heart out!
I'm a bit confused, what's the point in this and Sega AGES or whatever it was, that also has Sonic 1 on it? So there's two ways to buy Sonic 1?
And where is Sonic 3 (& Knuckles)?!
Why is it ALWAYS so neglected?
@Lizuka One of my favourites from back in the day. I got it preowned from Gamestation and it had 'KEVIN' scratched into the cartridge.
I wonder where Kevin is now.
I was gutted that this wasn't coming to Switch when it was released for other consoles earlier this year. It seems perfect for portable gaming. I hope the price is line with other versions!
@Tasaraus Nah. This will be a quick-and-dirty pile of ROMs thrown together with an eye for quantity over quality. I'm sure it'll be fun, but you'll have to take the good with the bad.
The Ages ports are being handled by the masters at M2, and will be meticulously recreated with all sorts of options and features.
The former is a big box of supermarket wine, and the latter is a single glass of finest vintage.
There's a place for both. But they definitely aren't the same.
Wow....this will be the first game I ever triple dip on HAHA. I had leftover money on my PSN account so I bought it day one. Then I got a physical copy for Xb1 used (about half price) because I wanted something to collect. I wanted it on Switch but never thought it would come to the system.
Love me some Shining Force!
@paihia Ecco gameplay hasn’t aged well at all. It still looks pretty though.
@citizen_zane Shining Force> all other TBS
I got this day 1 on Xbox one and absolutely loved it I will definitely be picking this up so I can achieve my dream of playing Streets of rage 3 on a boat.
This physical day one...
Plus outrun on ages...
Lovely!
@gordjscott BEN DROWNED
And took Kevin with him
Ohh nice, glad I held on getting that PS4 version.
Phantasy Star/Shining Force marathon incoming.
Is there really a point to buying AGES titles alone, aside from wanting only one or two titles? Are the versions of Sonic different in this bundle from those in AGES?
Now bring on sega saturn classics and dreamcast classics
@LinktotheFuture Columns II was a Japan only and released in Arcade and Saturn.
But the real question is - Is @Dazza excited for more old games?
Really SEGA was so hard to give us what we really wanted?
This news cheers me up so much!
Switch will now have just about everything I want on it...cept SNES games other than Megaman X Legacy.
Hope Nintendo announces those for next year, but I seriously doubt it.
Cool, I can finally throw away my Sega Nomad.
This sounds pretty good. I might get this. Although I think it's strange to omit Sonic 3 when other series get their trilogies added. Not that I mind too much since I already have other ways to play Sonic 3 but hey.
It's just not enough games, is it? Only 50? Pfft...
This just makes the Sega Ages range seem totally redundant - unless we are also getting Saturn and Dreamcast titles in the future.
I hope this means tha AGES line will be mostly non Megadrive games, more Arcade, Saturn, Dreamcast etc. I don’t mind having a few duplicates. Come on Sega, confirm Shenmue remaster
If there’s even a hint of bad sound emulation I don’t want anything to do with it. No At Games experience on my Switch, please!
@Bunkerneath "wise from your gwave"
@paihia Rocket Knight Adventures is a Konami classic, not a SEGA Classic. The only real downside is that due to Michael Jackson's involvement, neither his game Moonwalker, NOR Sonic 3 & Knuckles will be included on the collection. Seriously, Tee Lopes, compose new mixes of the PC Tracks.
Alien Storm, Altered Beast, and Kid Chameleon... so many memories!
Whoa, sign me up!!
If only the Revenge of Shinobi was the original build where you fight Spidey, Batman, and Mecha-Godzilla ^_^
I'll be happy to get this and cherry pick from the Sega Ages releases when needed (Outrun, Space Harrier, PS1, etc).
Pretty sure I already have this on PS3. Would have been nice if they had included additional or even different games from the previous release. What a letdown. Well, for me. Everyone else should run out and buy it if they already don't own a copy. I really do want these games on the go.
@rjejr "Soapbox: Why I'm Excited About Playing Mega Drive Games On The Nintendo Switch" coming soon (not)
I hate this news SO MUCH. I already own a million (or... more like a dozen) Switch games I'm desperately trying to get through, but this collection games a BILLION (or... around 19 or so) games I desperately want to play or re-play. Man, I hate having money in my wallet, apparently.
@SmaggTheSmug I think Ages has some arcade versions (which range from slightly to considerably different from the Mega Drive ones) and Master system games, which are not part of this collection.
Theoretically they have been selling us Sega AGES line mentioning the enhancements and M2's involvement with the emulation accuracy that it means, and many of us just wished Sega had announced it for the Switch when it was announced for the other systems...
Well, it has happened. Now, the dilemma. I was already going to buy some of the Sega AGES line. I'll stick to the ones that aren't in the compilation, then.
Plus, as usual people always have something to complain about. Until now they asked, even demand, this compilation on Switch instead of Sega AGES, and now that game is missing, that other one is badly emulated... As usual.
Anyway, to the people asking why Sonic is included here when it will be on Sega AGES (still without Western date, let me remind you), well: it's not. They're different versions, one is the ROM and the other has the M2 treatment. And first of all, it's there because this compilation existed before today, gentlemen.
@NinChocolate I don't expect anything different from perfect emulation
Now THIS is what I call a collection. Packaging about 5 to 10 titles, while interesting, often isn't worth the artificially inflated price (because Nintendo platform) of admission. But with so much games in a single package (provided it's not only half and the other half offered as DLC - don't know how this was on other consoles), then this is worth the money.
Hope this comes to NA as well.
@Lizuka Yep, Biohazard Battle is a classic. I owned it and loved it back in the day. My favourite 3 Megadrive shoot 'em ups were Hellfire, Biohazard Battle and Gynoug. Never got into Thunderforce IV for some reason. That won't stop me from buying it when it comes to Switch.
@Dazza I look forward to not reading it.
I did read the soapbox since it was you, might have skipped it if was written by one of the new kids but you've earned you're right to outgrow nostalgia, and I 100% agree.
This is fantastic news, albeit a little surprising. I didn't expect we'd get this with all the SEGA Ages titles on the way. Perhaps this means the 5 unannounced titles won't be more Megadrive games.
One more thing: the whole point of the achievements is the ability to share them. How will this be managed on the Switch? If they can only be consulted by the player they're pointless. And I guess we won't be seeing the physical version for less than 25 euros any time soon. So, for now, Xbox One version is winning for me, for those two reasons.
I'm also tired of the "exclusive Switch features" that are just the possibility to play co-op on tabletop mode. Come on... I can hardly play Mario Kart 8 this way, and I'm talking 2 players. The screen is not that big.
@Floria thought these would have input lag indeed
Golden Axe arcade version on Sega Ages pls.
How much will this be & when does this come out? I need this collection right now.
And this is why I never buy games on other systems unless they're first party exclusives. Cause every time you do, you end up shortchanged with a TV only version, when you could have gotten TV + handheld + portable console. Patience is not only a virtue, it pays tangible dividends.
That said, I'm more interested in the high quality Sega Ages games. The ones from M2. This is just a ROM collection afaIk. I'll pick it up with a GCU discount just for completeness' sake, but the Ages games will be cream of the crop.
Sonic 1 and 2 but not 3 & Knuckles. Grrrr...
and it's STILL missing Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles
and no the music isn't an excuse, if they can't use the music then they should just replace the music, Bandai Namco did when they released the Dragon Ball Z Budokai Collection on the PS3 and 360
yeah it wouldn't be exactly like the original but i would rather p;ay it with different music than not play it at all
Awesome !
How in the world are Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles not included?!?!?!
Makes AGES look like an afterthought. AGE really needs to focus on arcade ports and later Sega systems like Dreamcast and Saturn.
I wish Nintendo would release a cartridge with a bunch of NES and SNES games on it, to make up for their stupid intent check in with the online service.
Please tell me Streets of Rage and Altered Beast will have online co-op?!
Physically! Good job Sega!
Streets of Rage does, so I’m sure Altered Beast will as well. However, Ive read that the online experience is pretty terrible (at least for the other consoles)
shinobi III, eswat and alex kid...SOLD!
Flicky, Check.
Ristar, Check.
Sorted!
@60frames-please What’s so hard about connecting online with the Switch once a week?
yoooo this looks legit. ill b getting this for sure.
@Jayenkai I remember being given Flicky as a gift back in the day and feeling disappointed about how ugly it looked from the box. Then I played it.....
Superb game!
meanwhile, Nintendo only gives 20 NES games with a $20/year subscription
This is amazing news. I wish this is how Nintendo would handle their classic games.
I'll definitely be getting this.
How many more times do they have to release a Genesis Collection before we can get a Dreamcast collection! Come on Sega!
SEGA AGES games are, or will be with future titles, better versions of some of these Gen/MD titles...That is, if performance is important to you.
Performance improvements will include higher or more consistent frame rate (usually going up from 30FPS to 60FPS), little to no input lag, ACCURATE SOUND (which always seems to be so hard to achieve with these compilations). These are things that M2 has delivered in the past. There's no doubt they'll treat the current AGES lineup with the same courtesy.
Get this collection for the games AGES won't cover. But I wouldn't pass on the AGES games when they start to overlap with this collection. Instead, think of them as updated versions of those games.
Hope that clears up some confusion.
All Shinobis! Altered Beast! All Street of Rage! Comics Zone! Golden Axe 1, 2, 3! Vectorman 1 and 2! But missing Sonic 3 and Sonic Knuckles is unforgivable in a Genesis list. Sonic CD (ok, it's not exactly Genesis) should be a incredible bonus (exactly because it's not exactly Genesis)
now can people see how greedy nintendo are when it comes to the NES service and VC? i'm surprised this was even allowed on the switch tbh.
and what is that "exclusive" feature, you can do that on the ps4 also and play local 2 player too, nothing new.
No Wonder Boy games? Wonder Boy in Monster Land is one of my all time fave games.
@YoshiAngemon yeah I realized it was a konami classic but still I loved that megadrive game its carved into my brain n the soundtrack was a true highlight of the 16 bit chip tune era (for me anyway)
@Tasaraus Kinda, but the SEGA AGEs Mega Drive games will offer special features/mods, or like for Sonic, it has the Arcade Mega Play version of it included. not to mention the arcade remasters and Master System emulation (which this collection lacks)
@Antraxx777 my daughter loves that game I wish there was more games where you got to control animals (she also loves okami)
@Medic_alert wake me up when we get past SNES and NES stuff then. I don't care about those platforms. Plus, I already bought those games in the two classic consoles
@pbb76 thats odd wonder boy is on ps4 version? I think the list has been cut short beneath the V. well done NL
A bit redundant isn’t it? Curious to how this compares to Sega Ages.
Ive been waiting...... a long time for this.
At long last my switch is starting to live up to the potential of uber all time game machine! By Christmas I will have over 100 retro classics along with all the new and inbetween stuff, next up SNES and turbo graphx please!
@NintendoLee That makes sense, thank you!
I'm not too sure why they announce this after trying to sell people on
Sega Ages.
At first I thought it was the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing but that's ridiculous.
It's enticing but I've heard that the other version on PS4 doesn't emulate well as some other people stated above with problems galore but if it isn't BAD BAD type of Bad then it might be worth having on the Switch for me.
I hope that the rest of the Sega Age title will not have duplicates like with the two Sonic games here and instead focus on Saturn/Dreamcast titles or other PS2/ GC Sega title that can be emulated/ remastered perfectly...
People complain about lack of a proper Virtual Console, but with this, all the Final Fantasy, ACA games and many other ports, the Switch is becoming like a universal VC.
@huyi What you call greed, I call smart use of their IPs. There's a reason why one company is still successfully making consoles and highly praised games and the other one isn't.
Hot damn, it's even just one game short of what I personally deem Mega Drive's grand trinity of action-adventure (Beyond Oasis, Crusader of Centy and Landstalker). All on top of the console's full Phantasy Star, Golden Axe and Shining rosters, a bunch of SoRs and Sonics (ironically no 3 again, but there's Spinball, the game I've actually played and enjoyed MOST out of the three entries experienced so far), Comix Zone and Light Crusader... to quote a certain fantasy hippoid Element, "awwYEAH".
Oh, and Wikipedia suggests there are two Wonder Boy games as well, somehow not listed here - unless they're not in Switch version at all. Which would be weird, but after the console compilations lost Ecco and the aforementioned Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I wouldn't be surprised. Releases and licenses continue to face a legacy of convolutions in this field.
Strange timing, but nice nonetheless.
We get to keep these right? We don’t have to keep paying forever and ever only to see Sega snatch them back when we decide to stop. What a concept!?
I own carts for most of these, but portability is welcome, so I'm probably picking it up, especially if we get a physical release.
@Medic_alert you already did, on 3DS. Switch needs to focus on consoles not available on VC in the past
For being late, they should had at least throw in 20 more games in there like Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Eternal Champions, Chakan: The Forever Man, the 3 Ecco games, Mystic Defender, Alisia Dragoon, Pulseman, Space Harrier II, OutRun, After Burner II, Lightening Force, Rent-a-Hero, Virtua Racing, Super Monaco GP, Ex-Mutants, Super Hang-On, Arrow Flash, and Jewel Master to compensate for the late release which will probably cost more than the Ultimate collection of last gen. Nice to finally have the entire Genesis Phantasy Star and Streets of Rage trilogy on the go though.
Retro games that you buy and keep without paying a subscription... Wizardry, I tell ya!
Gonna get this, I have the old Mega Drive collection for my psp/vita and unless this one works worse than that, I'll be fine.
That's how you do retro gaming.
Cya
Raziel-chan
Yes, this is good news. Odd to exclude Sonic 3 and S&K though.
@Medic_alert I'd happily take Super Mario RPG, as that was skipped on 3DS. But I desperately want N64 and GBA more than anything on a portable (GC included)
Hopefully they cleaned up the emulation. Regardless, I still probably pick this up. Ages is nice, but I don't think I can wait for Phantasy Star or Shining Force.
Sigh. Give us a Saturn and Dreamcast collection already 🙄
@ogo79 I recall someone pointing out the PS3? version developer misspelling the name as "Sonic's Ultimate Mega Genesis Drive Collection" or something similar.
@LinkToTheFuture Columns II was "Columns II: The Voyage Through Time" in arcades. It hasn't yet found its way through time and space to land on a console.
Though as I recall, Sega didn't even originally publish Columns III outside Japan, letting a third-party pick it up. I guess they didn't think there was much demand in the franchise.
Well now I have no use for the Xbox One version!
@subpopz The first Phantasy Star is a Master System game. It was re-released on the Mega Drive, but only in Japan - this version is actually just the Master System ROM, with no changes made to it.
There we are. I was waiting for this, thought we were just going to get the individual releases in the "AGES" games. This is MUCH better for ones that are included, like the Sonic titles.
Thank you!! There’s a ton of great games on this list!! Won’t detract me from supporting the Sega ages lineup at all!! Looking forward to all of it!!
OMG Landstalker!!! I played this game A LOT when i was around 8yo!
Do yourself a favor and play this game. It was an excellent zelda competitor back then. It was also made by the studio that did shining force 1 and 2, even the composer was the same!
Already have this on PC but defo getting this for switch for shining force 1 & 2 alone.
@KingMike I wonder if Columns II isn't very good, which is why it still hasn't ventured outside Japan.
Definitely getting it for golden axe and streets of rage series alone.
Is this all going to be on a single cart? Cos that would be awesome.
However, I gotta say it: #snfor (Still No Flippin OutRun)!!
Ooooooooooooooooooooooomg
Some of my favourites on this collection are Landstalker, Light Crusader, Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy, and Gain Ground. It's awesome it has all Phantasy Star's, all Shining Force's, all Shinobi's, all Golden Axe's and all Streets of Rage's. If this also had the three Wonder Boy games and Sonic 3 & Knuckles this would be a platinum selection but without them it's still absolutely solid. It's the best Mega Drive collection I've seen so far.
I'm in for the games I already mentioned, but I'm also excited to play games like Beyond Oasis and Crack Down for the first time.
Wow, I’ll definately feel that I should have these games on my Switch for tv and handheld play. Not sure how often I’d actually play them though.
It will be like buying a warm fluffy blanket that smells of home.
Definitely going to have to get this, I have had a serious craving to play Vectorman 1 and 2 again. Great games.
@Antraxx777 That's not necessarily a difficult thing to do, but it's even easier for Nintendo to not require it. I like to buy and play Nintendo's games. If they insist on controlling things via always online stuff, and not letting us own digital games(they could delete these NES games from Switch, while they can't delete the NES games I've got on 3ds, Wii, and Wii U), then I'll just use emulators. I love Nintendo's attention to detail, such as quick response to controller input. I'd prefer to support their implementation of playing classic games, but they look like they want to pull the kind of crap Microsoft tried in 2013...
great set just pretend this is the VC
Thank Zeus!
I have no idea why this collection arrives half a year later than on the other consoles (it's not like they couldn't finish 25 year-old games for the Switch ), but I'm happy it will come because Sega Ages is not for me.
Finally, a decent retro collection for a decent price!
Again, Sega does what Nintendon't...
I have this on Steam. It's an excellent collection.
Thank you for rewind!!! I really hope Nintendo let's us do that on the Switch NES titles with the L button...
@bluedogrulez We've got a 60fps with wide-screen Outrun on the way though. I'll take the SEGA Ages remaster over the Megadrive port any day.
Of the 10 Ages titles announced so far, only Sonic and Sonic 2 are on this collection. So it's looking good that we'll have many more classic SEGA titles on top of these 50.I'd imagine SOR2 will get the M2 treatment and Sonic 3 is inevitable, perhaps a Shinobi title but other than that they'll be mostly games not on this collection. They are revealing the last 5 of the first batch next week along with the results of a fan poll for what titles we'd like to see next. That should be interesting.
Still lots of Sega fans out there amen! 😊
@Bunkerneath “Wise fwom yo gwave.”
I'm getting the AGES ports of Sonic 1&2, mainly for the Drop Dash being in the game, but I'll see about getting this as well! It's got Vectorman and Ristar, both of which I haven't played since I first played them in the Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube!
Theres games it should really have, but there are some really fantastic ones on here. Just hope they run good. I’ll wait for a review. I have the PS3 collection, and plenty to play this Autumn. Not talking about the NESflix either; I’m looking at you Mega Man 11 with the amiibo and SNK 40th with the book... <3
I have it on PS4, it’s a great collection but it definitely has its issues.
YES!!!! DAY FRICKIN’ ONE!!!
Umm... where are the two Wonderboy games that were in the PS4, and XB1 versions of this???
So downloading this on my Switch.
I will be double dipping since I already have this on PS4, but having a ton of Genesis titles on the go is something I can’t pass up.
Toe Jam & Earl is the real gem being included here. But even better a new Toe Jam & Earl game is coming to Switch soon too!
I don't get why they removed Sonic 3 & Knuckles from this after the initial releases, and that they still refuse to release it anywhere.
This is excellent, but where oh where is general chaos?
Dang, Phantasy Star I will be a part of the Sega AGES, but II, III, and IV won't, so does this collection contain any QoL stuff like Sega AGES will have? All Golden Axes is nice.Sword of Vermillion and Light Crusader I always wanted to give a go. Shadow Dancer I can finally give a spin. Nice list overall.
I will get the physical release absolutely. There are plenty of good rented games I played when the Genesis release. I would get it for Streets of Rage period. As far as sound even the original carts, which I have quite a few, had issues. Many times it was the cart contacts causing read errors and other times it was a coding problem with an over run glitch. I hope they worked these out.
I almost forgot: Where the hell is Battle Toads? Come on Microsoft throw me some love.
This is good! Perhaps now that SEGA Ages series can now focus LESS on the Mega Drive games (Or the very least, the ones on the collection) and MORE on the uncommonly released MD games but more importantly, the other SEGA systems we were promised.
Wasn't too interested in this for PS4 as they omitted too many games and didn't add enough to justify the removals, but.... The idea of playing many of these games on the go is appealing. If they would start including assets from Sega Ages on PS2 (Such as the remade Phantasy Star 1 and 2), I would come a lot closer to snatching this up. Sega is notoriously lazy with these compilations though.
So are these the PAL games on the collection (slower, squashed screen) or are they the USA NTSC versions.
Beyond Oasis and Sonic 3D Blast are the US names for these games.
Oh my. Now there is a juicy collection! Nice! Now Nintendo, give us collections like this too!
Ugh. I bought this on Xbox One when it came out because I thought SEGA was purely doing the AGES thing on Switch. Do these now co-exist down the road or is the US only getting this? Either way, I'll probably get it. Playing Shining Force and Phantasy Star II on a 4K TV is painful - yes, cue first world problems, I know, but still.
@Bunkerneath @RCGamer No! Bad! Altered Beast is a TERRIBLE game. Please don’t encourage them. They only made like ten Sega 3d Classics on 3DS and because of that “edgy” line that scared all our mothers back in the 90s it was one of them.
There are actual good games that they could have converted but they dedicated limited resources to converting this garbage because they knew it would sell. And it’s mostly because people our age keep its reputation alive.
I’m not innocent of such transgressions but after playing it again a plug-n-play a few years back and realizing how plainly bad it really is I have taken up the cause of shouting the truth wherever this game is mentioned.
I think I will trust M2/Sega Of Japan’s attention to detail over this cash grab by Sega of Europe.
@luke88 Because it's an EA game. I don't think EA has released a single game on VC ever. Even their fierce rival Activision has only ever released one game, I think.
Am I going to at some point regret leaving a sealed copy of Light Crusader sitting in a retro store for years for like $10 before someone eventually bought it? Like the Alundra 1s for PS1 I passed up at GameStop, seemed like a game that would be around forever. Castlevania Bloodlines was one of those games too, common cheap game one day, expensive the next.
(well, checking ebay, Light Crusader isn't an expensive game yet but it's not $10 sealed cheap either )
When will nintendo learn and give us Rocket Knight Adventure
@construx But Nintendon’t is still DOING
@eSocrates In my opinion, it’s just short enough to not offend. It gets its point across about power upgrades and cheesy masculinity, and then it’s over. It’s still pretty fun co-op and the music is alright.
@ecco6t9 As a Segs fan I’m getting both
AGAIN... Sonic 3 and Knuckles left out.
I don’t understand why they would make this and then also go ahead and release AGES. It seems splintered and inconsistent. ... that being said, here’s my money, Sega.
@SEGATA_DREAMCAST
This is a Sega compilation. Rocket Knight Adventures is by Konami.
What does Nintendo have to do with it?
Btw this may look a bargain but if the emulation is of a similar quality to the PS4 version, prepare for disappointment
@electrolite77 Its a genesis game dude. One of the best if not the best
About bloody time! That took... AGES.
@SEGATA_DREAMCAST
I know. But how is it down to Nintendo to rerelease a Konami game that was on a Sega System?
Already bough this for my X, but will double dip for the Switch version, which is what I really wanted in the first place.
@eSocrates Altered Beast on the Megadrive was always bad. Even as a 16bit launch title it got terrible reviews. The arcade original though is decent, not great but decent.
@Alto because AGES and this give gamers options:
A) 50 games presented as originally released for £50;
B) individual games represented with added features for £10 each.
Option A is better value for money per game, but if you only want 1 or 2 of them and the added features are interesting enough, you’ve got Option B as well.
Personally I’ve already got exactly half of these games on the Wii VC or GC Sonic compilations, so would rather pick and choose individual titles to grab than double dip again.
(prices quoted are indicative, I don’t know what they actually are)
im so much more excited about this than for those NES games you get with online service. Beyond Oasis is an amazing game. Would love to see a second part (prequel) of that game on Switch too.
@gaga64 I'm starting to gather all of what you said from this board here... I'll be completely honest and say I really only would want Landstalker and Shining Force series. Of course the Sonics too but I already have them on pretty much every other system. So I'm technically OKAY to hold out until Shining Force 2 and Lanstalker come out on AGES. I really hope they do, especially Landstalker!
@Alto of course the other key point is that Ages is a limited series of selected games drawn from across more than 1 system. Landstalker and Shining Force aren’t guaranteed to come to Ages (though we can hope).
So maybe it’s better to think of the compilation as a one-stop Virtual Console, and Ages as Deluxe remasters.
The first 2 Sega Ages titles, Sonic 1 and Thunder Force IV are now available on the JP eShop.
Thunder Force IV is not on the Genesis Collection and it"s very good, i strongly recommend it.
@paihia what on earth is eco or do you mean Ecco the dolphin? and rocket knight is a Konami game so not up to Sega to release
Hopefully the exclusive feature will be that the emulation isnt below par.
@OorWullie tbh Altered Beast isnt the only overeated MD game.
I'm a little bit puzzled, getting Sega Mega Drive Classics or Sega Ages versions of these games. What is the best version and what are differences?
@KingMike
i have no idea about that
Can anybody shed any light on how this 50game collection would compare to the mega drive gold sold by Menkind in terms of performance? I know the switch has the portable option of course and the mega drive gold is £90. Talking performance here
