Re: Devil Engine Dev Says Publisher Dangen Still Hasn't Paid Them And Won't Return The IP

robr

By all means, the publisher could be gaslighting everybody; but with all we’re working with (statements, emails), not sure how anyone could jump to the conclusion that the developer isn’t being their own problem in this situation.

Basically, “e-mail/call/contact my buddy with business stuff because I don’t want to be bothered with it.” (fair enough, that’s how most creative types handle their business). Buddy proceeds to drop the ball, dev skips straight to lobbing accusations at the publisher.

Publisher provides receipts to the public. Dev is cornered, throwing bs at the wall to see what sticks instead of admitting they might be wrong: “yeah, well maybe threats were second hand... uh, the numbers, uh, the numbers are forged...like a GEDORE ratchet...or something...and uh...look look, they just doxed my friend.”

I mean, whatever, I accept that they’re a solo developer (ie probably not all there...or at least half somewhere else). The situation is whatever. But for random people on the internet to see this and not only take sides...but side with the dev...only based on what they see? That’s silly.

Re: id Software Will Share The Release Date Of DOOM Eternal For Switch "Pretty Soon"

robr

@InAnotherCastle

As you may know, there’s a team Doom and a team Doom II and I’m totally team Doom. I didn’t like Doom Eternal, but anyone I know that loves Doom II loves Doom Eternal, and I totally get it (and don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a lot of Doom II). This seems quite intentional on iD’s part, and they succeeded at their goal of making the 2016 one feel like the original (without actually being like the original) and having Eternal feel just like the original’s sequel. Caution is thrown to the wind in favor of everything being over the top.

Guess who makes a reappearance? Arachnoids, pain elementals archviles, and the motherlicking Icon of Sin. The icon of sin battle feels just about the same (love it or hate it). The final level leading up to it is non-stop adrenaline.

In place of Doom II’s double shotgun introduction, we get the grappling hook shotgun mechanic. And while the archviles do return,
they’re much less of a threat and the true equivalent to their Doom II “ohhhhh noooooo an archvile” is the new Marauder enemy. I hate the Marauder, and he ruins the game for me.....basically the same complaint I used to hear about the archvile. Really, truly, honestly; enemies in Doom Eternal are to 2016 as the enemies in Doom II were to Doom. When I first played Doom II and all of a sudden we went from Doom to having chaingunners, mancubi, archviles and revenants... yeah, you’re gonna get that experience here. The first play through, with minimal weaponry and dealing with arachnoids jumping around on the first level...sho nuff.

There’s a lot of air dancing and platforming in Eternal that really didn’t need to be there. Doom II’s equivalent would be tightroping in the Chasm map or trying to make crazy jumps for the secrets in The Gantlet and The Waste Tunnels.

Geography and architecture is same for same, too. 2016 was mostly future space tech. Eternal is heavy on old medieval looking citadels or castles and frequent visits to “hell on earth”. The levels and game itself are equally much longer (at least they seem that way).

Mostly it’s just the feel and the atmosphere. Like I said: over the top. As it’s all coming back to me, I played on a console and I definitely am of the opinion that this game will be much more enjoyable with keyboard and mouse controls if you have access to a PC that can run it. I could really tell I was handicapped by the controller. Much more so than other modern fps games.

Basically, if you lean more toward Doom II...bob’s your uncle.

Re: Mini Review: Darius Cozmic Collection Console - A Surprisingly Varied Selection Of Home Ports

@JayJ

Just wait, in a year, the digital version of Space Invaders will appear from the shadows priced around the same. $60 for Space Invaders.
To be fair, I had family that worked for Commodore, so I didn’t have to pay for my last port of the game. Maybe Taito didn’t catch the news that their targeted thirty and forty-somethings of today are less than a third as wealthy as the thirty and forty-somethings that existed back when these games originally came out? 😂

@PeterAndCompany

But Taito isn’t giving me one of those 800 carts. Plenty of vintage Stanley hand planes go for thousands. Meanwhile, Lie-Nielsen will ask for an appropriate couple to few hundred dollars for one of their brand new and better made versions. Taito requires a profit, no doubt. But, the expense of hiring M2 to port an existing product is surely less than the cost of developing the sort of game that sells for $60 in 2020. NES and Super NES carts cost publishers upwards of $35 in 1980’s-90’s money. How much does it cost to publish a game to Nintendo’s eshop? How much was a magazine ad back in the day versus uploading a youtube video? I paid $20 for Darius Gaiden when the Saturn was on the market (it was originally $30). Decades later, they’re going to ask $20 ($60/3) for it in a market where $7.99 (Sega Ages, Psikyo and Hamster) is already stretching the consumers’ perceived value? We’re talking about code, 1’s and 0’s. It’s ridiculous.

@PhilKenSebben

Wait about two years and then it will be released digitally for more than the retail of the game cart. You’ll probably be able to buy the bonus games as a separate bonus collection. Until then, first dibs go to the 40 year old “fandom” crowd that will jump at the opportunity to throw $250 at some stickers, a compact disc and various bits of cardboard. Gag me with a spork.

Re: Square Enix Reportedly Ditching Plans For E3 2020 Replacement Show

robr

In the year of 2020, why do these companies throw their money at trade show booths, promotional swag and virtual keynote speeches?
Youtube is free, yo.

There are no business to business orders being placed at E3. There’s nothing instructional to demonstrate to an end user. Attendees aren’t there to meet new collaborative partners. It’s nothing more than expensive publicity masquerading as a trade show. This year everyone is hoping for thirty minute long trailer montages. But why? It’s all so silly.
