Back in April 2019, SNK Corporation chairman Ge Zhihui revealed that the company was working on a brand new Metal Slug game for consoles, alongside news of new and upcoming version of its Neo Geo system. We haven't heard much about the former since then, but new details have now finally arrived.
SNK has announced that the game is scheduled to release in 2020. No specific date or time frame has been provided beyond that - nor indeed any confirmed platforms - but it's been revealed that it's currently in development alongside a new smartphone game not yet revealed to the public.
Both titles are being worked on at SNK's studio in Japan and are said to be separate from the Metal Slug mobile game being developed by Tencent's Timi Studio. The new console game will be a run-and-gun side-scrolling shooter, while the mobile game will be a "2D side-scrolling card-type game".
SNK Interactive CEO Jeon Se-hwan says that the mobile and console games are targetting the 10-20-year-old and 30-40-year-old markets, respectively, and that the company will expand and strengthen the value of its current IP and develop more than one game each year (thanks, Siliconera).
The last mainline instalment in the series was Metal Slug 7, which launched on the DS in 2008 and was later updated for the PSP in the form of Metal Slug XX.
Thanks to Greatsong for the tip!

heavy machine gun intensifies
Rocket Lownsha!
Can't wait for the mobile version, would be interesting to try.
I say
Thank you!
The last Metal Slug game I played on the PS4 wasn't very good at all (either 7 or XX; forget which). Hopefully this one turns out well.
That's great news, hopefully they'll have some nice graphics like Samurai Shodown or like Street of Rage 4. Both nice looking games.
I also wish we would have all the other games available on the Switch by now.
Day 1 purchase for me.
Can't wait! i love the Metal slug games, the book from Bitmap Books about the series is brilliant.
Yes!!
Handheld Switch mode is the perfect way to play a 2D run-n-gun side scrolling game. I'll be looking for more information on this. Given SNK just announced something in early June, it's not hard to imagine this game could have been revealed at E3.
people are not gonna be happy about this game
I wish they released a collection of the already existing ones, being the Wii Metal Slug Anthology hard to find. Just like what they did with Samurai Shodown.
@Moroboshi876 Hard to find?
Here you go:
@ThanosReXXX C'mon, you know what I meant LOL
Everything can be found... If you pay the price, of course. And in this case it's quite high.
@Moroboshi876 they are easily available on eBay for roughly 20 pounds
A new Metal Slug game, King of Fighters 15, and the upcoming Samurai Shodown collection. SNK is on a role here.
@Moroboshi876 Well, if someone says a certain game is hard to find, then I literally interpret it as such, not as "it's actually pretty easy to find, but I just don't want to pay more than 30 euros for it"...
All kidding aside, the prices in those links are pretty normal, far as I'm concerned, so if someone would REALLY want to have this collection, then that should not be an obstacle at all.
I'd love for them to go back to the NGPC style games and expand on them. The original series has just been done to death already and got old way before 7 came out.
Day one for sure! Rocket Lawnchair!
@Nintendofan83
SNK will participate in a digital event named "New Game Plus Expo" on the 23rd (together with Sega, Atlus, NISA, Grasshopper and others). I hope we'll see some gameplay footage of the new Metal Slug (and King of Fighters XV) there.
Love a new Metal Slug, hopefully they implement a 4-player co-op mode with the new game. It's their 10th entry and on modern consoles now, there's no reason for Metal Slug games to be just 2-player co-op anymore.
@ThanosReXXX I know, and I'm usually literal too. I should have used different words.
Well, this is a collection with a wide range of prices depending on the seller. I was under the impression, for what I had seen until now, that it was 60+, but today I could see it's between 30 and 65 euros, with some people asking as much as 90. But yes, it turns out it's not insanely expensive. It's just for me, paying more than 20 for a retro title is a little expensive. A personal point of view anyway.
But I do wish they re-released on Switch.
@Moroboshi876 Well, I tried to search closest to your area, but there's other European shops where it's even cheaper, so I'm all but sure that you could get it somewhere for that price, postage & packaging excluded.
This is from a Dutch shop that I often buy from:
https://www.mariowii.nl/wii_spel_info.php?Nintendo=Metal_Slug_Anthology
And they do send titles abroad as well.
On a side note: if you've modded your Wii or Wii U, you could of course always download it. And as an added bonus, you could then take the NTSC version instead, which is superior, because it runs in 60Hz mode.
By new... You probably mean still using the same 25 year old sprites.
@ThanosReXXX Wow, thanks for the research you've done!
@Moroboshi876 I do know that the PS2 version of the Metal Slug collection game is on PS4... if that helps.
Metal Slug 2 & 3 <3
Great news, SNK the future is now.
@tourjeff Surely that's the last way people will want it to look.
Pixels all the way with super smooth character animation.
@shonenjump86 I wish they would at least give us a KOF Collection of KOFXI-XIV before they introduced us to KOFXV. As for Metal Slug, hopefully they plan another collection of that soon, a Metal Slug Collection with all 12 main games would be fantastic: Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5, Metal Slug 6, Metal Slug 7, Metal Slug: 1st Mission, Metal Slug: 2nd Mission, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug Advance, and Metal Slug XX.
Intrigued by a new Metal Slug, not by ANY mobile game/version.
Everyone is going to get hyped for the new Metal Slug and then it’s going to be revealed as a super deformed kawaii overhead 2.5-D polygon rhythm game.
Hmm in this case i think im looking forward more to the mobile game than console. Metal Slug isn't worth $40+
@Moroboshi876 You're very welcome. I'm a big fan of the games myself, so I always like to spread the love to others.
I even bought the Neo Geo Mini, to have yet another way to play them...
Now team up with Capcom for Capcom vs SNK 3 or at least the first 2 remastered
@ThanosReXXX I'm actually diving into the series just recently, got Metal Slug as an ACA Neo Geo game for Switch and Metal Slug 2 in the same line but for Xbox One thanks to a price drop, but I don't want to purchase more entries, I stopped like I did with Samurai Shodown, just in case there is a collection coming. Loved what I saw so far.
@Moroboshi876 Yeah, it's a great series, if you like retro side scrolling shooters. All of these were originally released on arcade machines and Neo Geo consoles, but after that console died, the team behind it still made some more games.
This is one of them, called In the Hunt, and it's also available on the Switch, so if you like Metal Slug, then you might just like this one as well:
And then there's also indie teams, inspired by such games, and coming out with efforts of their own. This is a particularly good one called Huntdown:
If you don't own it already, it's definitely worth considering, and it has voice acting throughout, which is quite hilarious, if you like 90s action movies and all the "bad@ss" language used in them.
Does this mean that the Switch will get the NGPC Metal Slug’s around the release of the new one?
@ThanosReXXX I have it on my wishlist, it being kind of a cousin of Metal Slug series
@GrailUK when you free every prisoner and the boss kills you once before dying himself...
NO PRISONERS

@EmirParkreiner Only savages would use the Rocket Lawnchair! I prefer the more civilized
Laser Camel!
@Reigestugatensho Hahaha. so brutal
I recently played through MSXX on my vita and I thought it was great. Not sure sure why people booboo on it online. Ah well. If this next instalment comes in at least as good I’ll be happy
@Moroboshi876 You can also buy Metal Slug 1, 2, X and 3 on GOG.com if you want them on PC. They're also available on Steam. I'd personally go with the GOG versions because they are DRM free so you can buy them without installing a launcher and as of writing this, they're on sale!

@Moroboshi876 That's small change for retro stuff. Anything lower than £100 is a bargain now. Big name JRPGs are now rapidly heading towards the £1000 mark.
Who's ready to jam at the beat of Final Attack once more?
@retro_player_77 sounds like a good idea to me. 👍🏾
@ReikoMortis I also want to know what the new console is.
Actually, If SNK just does an HDMI, upscaled AES system, I’ll be happy to give them money.
@retro_player_77 They have The Metal Slug Anthology collection on Wii.
>the 10-20-year-old
Did 10 year olds play Metal Slug back in the 90's?
On Switch please! And XX too!
