Re: Microsoft Has Just Bought Bethesda, Giving It Doom, Fallout, Elder Scrolls And Wolfenstein

We've gotten to a stage where there's the world video game market and then there's the Japanese video game market. I guarantee you that Microsoft doesn't care if they sell zero systems in that market because they don't have Role Playing Games featuring 10 year old school girls having sex with an octopus to a soundtrack of some woefully out of date 1980's glam rock.

You’re making a good choice on the Xbox Series X. I have been planning on upgrading to one from my One X but the combination of COVID economic woes, the likely ‘new console’ availability issues leading up to Christmas, and my satisfaction mostly coming from the Switch means I’ll likely wait a bit longer.

Re: Even At £100, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Doesn't Come With A Game Card

I’m pretty sure the idea is for each kid to ask Santa for one for Christmas and then they can play against each other and their parents/grandparents are going to watch the trailer and go into “whoah that’s super rad” mode just like my daughter’s grandfather did. Again, y’all discussing about “$200 for ‘co-op’ “ got some serious issues...
Then again, I don’t wet my pants when I see gawdy IP skinned special edition controllers, plastic figurines and Nintendo themed garments, so perhaps I’m just not one with the “fandom”. 💅

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 5th)

I’ve been exposed to good old covid19 and have what I thought was a cold, so I’m currently playing a game called “find a testing facility in the US that isn't closed until Tuesday”.
Congress is playing a game called “GOP and DNC bi-partisan virtue signaling” so since I’m working as much as they are I’ll be playing game called “find a roof over my head” by next week. 😂

That said, probably Tony Hawk as a self reward after I clean up my house.

I did randomly decide to play through all of the NES/SNES Castlevania games this week. I must say, I’ve been wrong all of these years. Simon’s Quest isn’t as bad as I had remembered. Castlevania III is boring and overrated and Castlevania IV is boring and overrated.

I also randomly beat Mario and Mario 3 whatever day All-Stars dropped. I’m not into Mario games (did play the first one a million times back when), but I have to say, SMB 3 is damn impressive.

I totally had to Google half of those. I only really knew the Turbo ports and Hudson’s Adventure Island from memory. This is the first time I’ve heard of Whomp ‘Em.

Edit:

Holy moly: Whomp ‘Em is a re-skin of Saiyuki World 2 which is a sequel to a re-skin of Wonderboy in Monsterland. My mind is blown.

@SmaggTheSmug

Yeah, they’re taking advantage of the newfound Wonderboy name recognition while delivering a direct sequel to a game that had dropped the Wonderboy name because...well..the obvious. 😂

Monster World IV was never exported and fell between the cracks as a Sega Saturn era Mega Drive game. It wasn’t until the 360/Wii era that anyone outside of Japan had access to a legal english version of the game.

I may have had a turbografx and was familiar with the series, but I too literally never played a Wonderboy game (outside of Hudson’s Adventure Island) until the Dragon’s Trap remake, myself. I literally only knew Monster World IV existed because someone at Gamefan wrote an article about it.

Escape/Westone owned the game and Sega owned/owns the title. Consequently, the base games were released on various platforms with new titles and character sprites. The original games themselves have a confusing title order. All games are considered part of the Wonderboy franchise. Meanwhile, the first (Wonderboy) and third (Wonder Boy III Monster Lair) arcade titles are not considered part of the Monster World series. The Monster World series consists of the Wonderboy games that feature action-rpg/metroidvania/platformer gameplay.

Wonderboy

  • Ported as Adventure Island (adventure island had it’s own sequels)

Wonderboy in Monsterland (first Monster World game)

  • Ported as Bikkuriman World
  • Ported as Saiyuki World (had it’s own sequel: Whoop ‘Em)
  • Ported as Super Wonderboy in Monster Island
  • Ported as Super Adventure Island (not to be confused with the SNES game of the same name)

Wonderboy III: Monster Lair (third arcade game)

  • Ported as Monster Lair

Wonderboy III: Dragon’s Trap (third master system console game) (second Monster World game)

  • Ported as Adventure Island (not to be confused with the above)
  • Ported as Dragon’s Curse
  • Ported as Monster World II
  • Ported as Wonderboy: Dragon’s Trap
  • Ported as Monica’s Gang

Wonderboy V: Monster World III (fifth Wonderboy title, third Monster World game)

  • Alt title Wonderboy in Monster World
  • Ported as Dynastic Hero
  • Ported as Monica’s Gang in Monster Land

Monster World IV
(Wonderboy - Asha in Monster World should be a direct sequel to this. )

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Spiritual gameplay successor to Wonderboy III: Dragons Trap and can be considered part of the series (specifically Monster World). Simply lacking the name (owned by Sega).

Wonderboy - Asha in Monster World
Presumably a direct sequel to Monster World IV, featuring the same protagonist.

I keep recommending certain Devolver games to my friends only to find out that they’re Switch/PC exclusive and not on their PS4. The 13 year old edgelord fan base is going to find that all of the PS5 and XBOX system sellers are delayed, indefinitely. The kids are going to have to decide between portable Mario Kart and Lego properties and I’m betting the farm on the former. There’s not a compelling reason for someone to buy a PS5 this year, and the compelling reason to buy an Xbox Series X is if you own an Xbox One . I’m planning to get an Xbox Series X. I’m sold on it. But I’m also not planning on buying any new games for it anytime in the next year.
