@RupeeClock Exactly what I was thinking, I prefer X to be standard but Y inverted. My cynical guess is that they won’t be independently configurable, hopefully I’m wrong. Also while they’re at it, why can’t they fix the same issue in Luigi’s Mansion 3?
If it was announced today they would've had to have doubled the screen size to allow for socially distanced multiplayer gameplay. Complete with masked up promo video....
Easy to find still, just downloaded both the patch and a fully patched ROM of the game. Just because the github has been removed doesn’t mean it has disappeared from the internet.
Legendaries are basically worthless these days as they give them away like there’s no tomorrow. Much preferred to actually catch them in the game using status moves and balls. I even preferred having to go to the stores to collect the codes, at least you had to do something.
I’d prefer to see Let’s Go variants, already played through Johto twice in traditional form. Let’s Go was a fun game, this time they could add loads more features in and the map will be twice as large. Half the assets are already complete from the first game so shouldn’t be too much for them to handle.
@westman98 It will no doubt be the N64 version of Ocarina, far easier for them to reuse the emulator developed for Mario. Using the 3DS version would require a rebuild I would think, I doubt the Switch could handle 3DS emulation, plus you'd need to compensate for the dual screen features.
I'm not holding out much hope of them adding the Y-inversion option to Sunshine. Luigi Mansion 3 has been out almost 1 year and is yet to be patched. Nintendo almost amended things with the system-wide remapping but failed to add stick inversions. Lack of control customisation is the reason I cancelled the pre-order. The only way to fix it is to use a cronusmax which doesn't work in handheld mode.
So Nintendo ruin yet another game by not allowing you to invert the controls. I sold Luigis Mansion 3 for this very reason, I will cancel this pre-order, unacceptable to not be able to customise the inversion. The GameCube version can be patched to run at 16:9 and you can also customise the controls via Gekko codes.
Hopefully it gets hacked so more NES games can be added, I wonder what kind of SoC this is using? I will also add that the buttons should've been placed higher up.
This is one game where I feel motion controls worked great, will be keen to see how much the IR of the remotes are missed though. Playing with those tiny joycon will be nowhere near as comfortable as the remote and nunchuck. Interested to see how good the touchscreen will work too, particularly with blue pull stars, but using touch for star bit aiming will be beyond useless during combat gameplay.
Shame they couldn’t get this out sooner, would rather wait for the All-Stars until Feb and have this sooner. I’ve never completed this, always mean to go back to the Wii U version I played 6 years ago but held off, will wait a little longer now.
Mario 64 really needs the N64 analog stick to control well, modern sticks really don’t work as well. These ports are super lazy to be fair, but it will be nice to have for the handheld play. All 3 can be played at 4K with mods on PC anyway so not expecting anything special from the visuals.
Galaxy 2 DLC next year??! Also I hope you can hook up the GC controller with the adapter to play Sunshine. Mario 64 is a bit of a letdown too, not even 16:9 or 60fps.... hope they tweaked the controls to work better on non-n64 analog sticks. I recently 120 starred the PC port with 60hz and SGI mods, was glorious except for the clunky controls when using a modern controller. This is more of a purchase for my collection as opposed to a must-play really.
Hori make great grips and alternative controllers. I am very happy to own the Monster Hunter XX grip for 3DS, along with the Remote Play Assist for Vita. Both of these have gotten ridiculously expensive in the past year, over 150 for each, crazy. They are excellent products though, they transform the handhelds from uncomfortable, cramp inducing wrecks to ergonomic delights! I love the Split Pad Pro, my only wish is that the DPad was a little further to the left.
I hope they can do with Ocarina of Time what they've done with Mario 64 on the PC. Mario plays amazingly at 60fps, with the HD models a nice bonus. I wonder how Nintendo's Switch port will compare?
Isn’t the whole point of the free press the ability to document a wide range of subjects and topics? Obviously you disagree with these devices, which is entirely up to you, but why should others be denied the articles?
There are plenty of things I disagree with, however, it doesn’t mean that I would agree with surprising the exposure for others who agree (within reason, obviously)
You should rightly voice your opinions but you shouldn’t be “policing” the journalism of Nintendolife and dictating what they can/can’t report on. Also you shouldn’t be so narrow-minded as to view any article you disagree with as “bad journalism”.
@CoOokie I doubt the majority of pocket WiFi devices would support this many concurrent connections, most only support around 10 devices. I’m sure when I saw this story a couple years back he was using multiple SIM cards.
9/10, Just that SNES question, I knew Howard Lincoln was Chairman of Nintendo of America at the time so guessed him, the rest were easy peasy, for me at least. I've owned everything listed at least once, apart from ROB.
@teamdoa You're better off using a modded Wii/Wii U to rip the disc to a USB drive, then extract it to PC. Only some older DVD drives work in PC, but if you search for models etc I'm sure you could find one if you prefer that route. I guess the only other catch, if you can call it one, is that you will need to configure the game/emulator in order to set everything up. But I wouldn't call that a catch, read tutorials etc and you can learn about it while setting up. It's a fun project and the end results are excellent looking and performing Wii/GC games.
If you have PC then another option is buying a used copy of the Wii original (price has dropped significantly thanks to this remake). Playable on Dolphin emulator, HD texture pack and 60fps patch.
Sunshine and 64 would be great remastered and re-coded for 60fps. On the other hand I’m not fussed about the Galaxy games coming over to Switch. The lack of IR would be a diminishing factor, imagine attempting the Perfect Run on Galaxy 2 without IR... Also playing with the tiny Joy Con to replicate the original control scheme wouldn’t be much fun, at least for me. Besides, both games can be emulated on PC at 4K, with HD textures, and played with original controls when using a Dolphin Bar.
@nintendoknife Well that’s not how it works where game storage is concerned. Game assets are constantly being loaded in and out of RAM from whichever storage medium they’re located. Also memory chips are divided into sectors, each sector comprising of 512 bytes storage. A 256GB drive contains 5 million sectors where the data is broken up and stored. All the sectors have the capacity to fail, the drive’s lifespan is not based on the read or write cycles of the entire capacity. One bad sector could corrupt the entire drive, particularly with the Wii U’s proprietary file system. The Wii U has 2GB RAM, with 1GB dedicated to games. Take Breath of the Wild, 10+GB game, imagine the amount of swapping that goes on between storage and RAM. BOTW especially exemplifies this practice as assets are loaded in and out on the fly, there are very few dedicated loading screens for swapping the data. Additionally you don’t know what the OS is doing behind the scenes in terms of writing to storage. Flash memory in itself is not a problem. The companies that fabricate the chips (Samsung, Micron etc) produce them in large quantities, the process is not perfect and many chips have faults (bad sectors etc). Rather than waste the faulty chips they separate them into bins, with the highest quality chips being used by companies during the manufacture of high spec nvme drives, SSDs or expensive smartphones/laptops. The lower binned chips may be used in lower spec items. Then you get to the lowest binned chips, which are used in the manufacture of cheap USB storage devices. The same applies with CPUs, it’s why you get cheap i3 models, they’re a result of failed i7 yields. There is a reason why they’re so cheap, a 256gb usb drive is not equal to a 256gb 980 pro SSD, even if Samsung manufactured both chips. Using low binned memory to perform the above tasks is asking for trouble.
@nintendoknife The issue with USB sticks is that the memory chips they use for them are the lowest binned, this is why they’re so cheap. When you subject them to constant read-write cycles, which is what will happen when streaming games from them, their lifespan is significantly reduced. Much safer to use a HDD for storing games. If you are using UBB drives then at least back up your save data regularly if it’s important to you.
Imagine winning the ‘lottery’ and receiving the SFC, then realising that both backup batteries in the carts are dead..... Well if you can’t go out I suppose you could just leave the console on for 3 months
His 60fps 16:9 mod of Mario 64 is excellent, makes the game feel miles better. He fixed almost all of the game logic inconsistencies that occurred as a result of doubling the frame rate. I’m not sure that it works on original hardware but I did manage to inject the patched version into the Wii U VC release, it works perfectly on Wii U.
@Edu23XWiiU Nvidia were the first to create hardware that can render ray traced frames in real time, at acceptable frame rates. Pixar ray traced scenes created for cinema are rendered individually with dedicated render farms. The resulting films are then simply played back, not rendered in real time. They could’ve taken months to create an equivalent scene when compared with RTX, dependent on how long ago the film was created.
@ncb1397 It should theoretically ‘run’ on any hardware due to it being part of the game engine itself. What I imagine they will do is reduce quality settings accordingly based on the performance on each platform. DXR works on 10 series GTX cards which don’t have the RT cores, but as DXR is not part of the individual game engines it is horribly taxing to run without dedicated hardware. Take Control on PC, it uses all the 3 forms of DXR effects (lighting, reflections and global illumination), when all are activated at ultra the 2080 ti can only get consistently above 60fps if resolution is 1080p. In order to have these effects running within a software environment, with no dedicated hardware to help, will either take massive brute force or an extremely well optimised implementation of the ray tracing feature. I’m betting that they will have this working, to some effect, across all formats they release on. No one will know for sure until it can be tested though. Can’t wait to play it again, loved it all those years ago on PC, I remember playing it on SLI GTX 280s, barely 40fps at 1080p haha!
@ncb1397 it will be interesting to see how well optimised their implementation is when running it on standard shaders. DXR runs awful on 10 series GTX cards, supported but unusable. I imagine most of the ray tracing goodness will be PC exclusive for now.
@Varkster Crytek have implemented their own software accelerated ray tracing within the latest CryEngine, it runs independently of any dedicated hardware. How well it runs on low powered hardware though is another matter, but it will technically ‘run’ on switch as it is all handled in software via the game engine itself.
Why did they release the button remapping feature but omit the ability to invert the analog stick axes? Luigi’s Mansion 3 is unplayable for me as I cannot, and will not, play without Y axis inversion. The only way I can invert the controls currently is to use a dongle to connect a cronusmax, add in a profile to invert the RS Y axis, then connect a DS4 to play. Absolutely ridiculous, either add the invert option in-game (baffled why it wasn’t added) or add it at system level. These are basic options that players should be able to change to their preferences. Mario Sunshine was the same, stuck with an inverted X axis, which you had to use Gekko codes to correct.
@Steven_the_2nd Emulators that can double frame rates and render at 4k beat out original systems, these old games feel much better to play. Try playing Goldeneye on the 1964 emulator with the correct plugins. Locked 60fps and crisp visuals. And yes, I do own the cartridge.
So long as we support devs/publishers by legitimately purchasing games we should be free to do whatever we wish with our hardware and software, provided we don’t profit from it. Some games have massively benefited from rom hacks to fix/improve things. No different to mods with PC games. I own more than 500 physical games for various consoles and if I want to rip them to a HDD or modded classic console for convenience then I should be able to, after all I’ve paid my money for them.
By the looks of the design it looks like it will have very efficient cooling. Microsoft will never scrimp on the engineering of thermals again..... I’d would buy this but with MS releasing exclusives on PC I can’t see this replacing that. There’s no way it will beat a 2080 ti.
I remember buying a Japanese import gold, completed it eventually, had to use a good old gamefaqs text guide a couple of times I got stuck! Gold/Silver were originally supposed to be the final Pokemon games, this is why the end battle was who it was (won’t spoil it for people yet to play). Pokemon wasn’t overly popular upon the Jap release in 1995. Obviously the franchise took off sufficiently worldwide in 1998 with red/blue but development of G/S started around 96/97, well before anyone could foresee the success. The games would have been a fitting end to Pokemon if they were to have been the last.
I’m enjoying the game so far (3 badges in) the gyms are cool and I like the new way some of the wild Pokémon roam freely. But it does feel a bit stripped back compared to Sun/Moon. The soundtrack is definitely not as good, although there have been a few good sounds. Small oversights I’ve noticed include a lack of people in towns to speak with, very few trainer battles in routes (so far, maybe this will increase) and small errors such as when on a bike and enter battle you’re transformed back into walking clothing. I know that last point is very petty but it does point to a general lack of polish when compared with the predecessors; you appeared during battle with your pole ride gear intact. Overall though it’s pretty fun, I find myself not wanting to put down even after 4+ hour stints so that says something. One thing that annoys me with Pokemon these days though are the rivals, why do they need to be so friendly? I want idiot rivals like Gary (Blue) who would put you down and appear out of nowhere to battle when you least expect/are not fully healed etc. Imagine back in red/blue Gary handing out Revives...
Played it for 15 mins or so today at Mega Plaza in Bangkok, the stall will get the game for sale tomorrow and I have it reserved, collecting in the afternoon. Looked and played pretty nicely
What a convoluted mess, you should be able to activate multiple consoles to one account and share all games and save data. Steam is a great example, I can finish up on PC and continue on Laptop if necessary, seamless. Nintendo needs to get with the times.
Why they don’t just go the same route Apple takes with iOS devices is beyond me, I’d double dip for sure if they did this but I’m sure their implementation of this will be cumbersome at best. How will games that don’t support cloud saving work? And what about eshop games?

By the looks of the design it looks like it will have very efficient cooling. Microsoft will never scrimp on the engineering of thermals again..... I’d would buy this but with MS releasing exclusives on PC I can’t see this replacing that. There’s no way it will beat a 2080 ti.
Re: Anniversary: It's Been 20 Years Since We First Glimpsed Johto In Pokémon Gold And Silver
Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Is Japan's Fastest-Selling Switch Game
Re: Review: Pokémon Sword And Shield - A Solid Start To Gen 8 On Switch, Despite The Hate
Played it for 15 mins or so today at Mega Plaza in Bangkok, the stall will get the game for sale tomorrow and I have it reserved, collecting in the afternoon. Looked and played pretty nicely
Re: Guide: How To Share Games And Saves Across A Nintendo Switch And Switch Lite
What a convoluted mess, you should be able to activate multiple consoles to one account and share all games and save data. Steam is a great example, I can finish up on PC and continue on Laptop if necessary, seamless. Nintendo needs to get with the times.
Re: You'll Be Able To Transfer Save Files Between Switch And Switch Lite, Eventually
Why they don’t just go the same route Apple takes with iOS devices is beyond me, I’d double dip for sure if they did this but I’m sure their implementation of this will be cumbersome at best. How will games that don’t support cloud saving work? And what about eshop games?
