Update (Fri 18th Sep, 2020 01:15 BST): The first update for Super Mario 3D All-Stars has arrived. As expected, Version 1.0.1 contains a few fixes and adjustments.
One sorts out the display when playing co-star mode in Super Mario Galaxy and the other fixes "some issues" to make the experience more comfortable but doesn't specify what exactly has been resolved. Here are the full patch notes (thanks, Nintendo Everything):
Ver. 1.0.1 - Released September 18, 2020
– Fixed/adjusted the display in Super Mario Galaxy when playing in Co-Star mode.
– In order to let you play the game more comfortably, we have also fixed some issues.
Have you updated your copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars to Version 1.0.1 yet? Notice anything else? Tell us down below.
Original article (Thu 17th Sep, 2020 05:30 BST): Like them or not, day-one updates have become standard practice for a lot of major video game releases in recent years. Even Nintendo's 3-in-1 anniversary collection Super Mario 3D All-Stars will prompt users to update it when it launches this Friday.
This information comes via GoNintendo, which also notes how this patch bumps the game up to Version 1.0.1:
"We're not quite sure what the update does, as patch notes are yet to be shared. We do know that it bumps the game up to Version 1.0.1."
While you'll presumably be able to play the game right out of the box, you'll still probably want to update to this latest version. Our guess is it's some small bug fixes here and there to slightly enhance the overall experience.
In other words, don't expect this to patch in Super Mario Galaxy 2 - although we're all for it (if you're reading, Nintendo).

I think its for mario 64.
It polishes Mario's buttons
IT ADDS MARIO GALAXY 2 😄😄😄
I bet it's gonna fix the 64-induced softlock
It removes Mario Galaxy 1
Update the "L is real" texture to read "No Galaxy 2" I'm sure!
I just want button remapping :’(
@BooJoh 😆😆😆
Ah good. Another reason for people to be angry and unhappy about this.
I'm just gonna get the game and enjoy it. Alone. As usual.
[edit] judging by the response to this comment, I guess for once plenty of people share my opinion. XD
@1031Gamer You can still do that through the system controller settings
Prays for Mario 128
There’s a rumor going around that the update adjusts the color of Mario’s nipples a little. Sure they’re out of view in every game, it just makes for some good improvements “under-the-hood.”
@neufel the sign will now read “there never was a Galaxy 2”
@ChromaticDracula I thought it was nipple hardness.
You know, stability improvements
It adds the "So long King Bowser" line.
It’d be so cool if they made it so we could play Galaxy on a Pro Controller without a gyroscope.
@1031Gamer you can remap the buttons on a system level
@shinesprites no that would never happen
I think the sign will have a middle finger on it and read galaxy 2 on the end.
Its probably just a patch to shut out the pirates with their pre-leaked copies.
I'm legitimately confused why people have come to hate day one updates. They're so commonplace that they happen for virtually every game nowadays, and wouldn't you RATHER they fix bugs sooner rather than later?
Day 1 Update for old games that have No updates from their original version ??
I wonder what kind of bugs from each series.
probably a patch to force 10.2.0 update
Hopefully they eventually patch it to allow me to invert the X-axis in Sunshine back to the way it should be.
Got to be a camera update on 64, love the game but some platforming bits are so much harder when you can't see the angles!
It’s definetely for the Mario64 softlock
@Thannus It makes people feel like the game was not delivered finished as debugging kept going after print.
Also for (hybrid-)portables like the Switch that means when you play just after getting out of the store you play the bugged 1.0 version and have to wait before playing what you feel is the "real" release.
But ultimately I agree, quick updates are good. I do not long the days of 3DS Pokémon games with days of fear caused by save-erasing bugs
@1031Gamer I don't understand why that isn't standard for literally all ports of older games ever.
It makes Bowser straight so that Mario doesn't say his infamous line
1080p for Mario 64 while docked
It brings Samus as playable character in Super Mario Galaxy 1 !
So! Much! STABILITY! laser eyes
This is what happens when you use an emulator and don't let users tweak it. They will push out a patch for every setting they find wrong.
In this case it's a good thing because they should be small and make a difference.
It adds gore and blood when Mario jumps on enemy
Please be inverted y-axis in Sunshine... It's the first thing I have to in virtually every game. It would make it unplayable for me.
Galaxy 2 confirmed.
Based on Nlife's and Gamexplain's reviews there's a lot of things that should be patched in - if not day one then ASAP.
@Thannus Yeah, I'd rather they fix them before they release the game.
But what if... it adds Mario Galaxy 2?
It might be to fix the soft lock for Mario 64 upon backing out of the game, but some have said that the leak was just a bad dump and the retail cart of 1.0.0 works fine. We'll see.
@1031Gamer Play it on PC instead. Then you can remap all you want.
Yesterday i set up Dolphin and Mario Sunshine properly, and it's better than the official Switch release.
Runs at 60 fps, 1440p Widescreen, and i used a hack to invert X-Axis. One of my HDMI ports on PC is also connected to a 46" 3D TV (NVIDIA 3D also works on it).
Official Switch version can't compete with this.
I own physical copy of Mario Sunshine on GameCube, so this is legal for me as i dumped my disc already back when it were released. I dumped all my purchased GameCube games at some point 15+ years ago as backup.
I saw a review on the YT channel GameXplain. All three games have a number of small bugs. Nothing game braking and mostly too small to even notice, but still. Also some changes from the originals which might not be appreciated by veterans. Like the aiming controls for FLUDD being inversed and no option to change it back. This patch could address these things.
@Thannus As I said elsewhere some people whine and moan so much about every little thing on here and have such a negative "glass half empty" attitude it's surprising they get any enjoyment out of their games at all. Oh noes, I have to wait a couple of minutes before playing my new game!! 😪 Nintendo is anti consumer!
@Vriess May not be fixed.
All 3 games is emulated, and Nintendo did workarounds to make them run faster than they should have. This causes inaccuracy in the games and can't be fixed unless you run it on better hardware than Switch.
Switch isn't powerful enough to emulate GameCube and Wii with 100% accuracy.
You need a beefy PC to emulate them properly.
@Thannus The issue I have with it is that I play a lot of games on older consoles. So if I were to buy a used game for my old Switch in, say, ten years, the game I would play would be the version on the cart without the patch. So in this regard, it's better if they fix the game before putting it on the cart.
@ritouf Why isn't that an option yet?!?
Does anyone know if it will unlock midnight in each region? so in like 14 hours gmt time, or tommorrow evening for european players like some other games ...
couldn't see a date yet.
60fps for 64 and Sunshine?
@Strumpan I don't think they're particularly worried about customers who buy this in 10 years, by which point they'll likely be selling a new version of the same game ported across to their new machine in the form of an emulation or remake.
I'm sure it works fine without the patch. And I'm sure if in 10 years you're desperate to play a game of Switch that doesn't work without the patch, there will be plenty of folks online with solutions and ways to get that patch.
@Joekun Probably not, would require too many changes in the original code for a typical day-one patch. I hope for these changes following this year.
It invisibly adds nipples to all character models
😅😅 "Super Mario 3D All Stars is getting a day 1 update according to this other site that didn't know what the update did. We didn't bother to find out either."
Just gonna add a message that reads "we're sorry mario, the galaxy is in another castle."
@Ogbert Sure, I agree with all of that, but it will still be an issue.
I would be happy with Mario 64 in widescreen.
@shinesprites It's a little known feature that you can use one switch the update the software on another, even when they're offline.
I will guess it is nothing exciting.
The SM64 softlock is likely due to a bad dump, since folks with the cart don't seem to have a problem.
Maybe it fixes that "censor" sound in SMS that is missing modulation.
It removes Mario64.
@BooJoh LOL wait, what if you're right 😲
@TheFullAndy probably
@Scrubicius same! But its probably not even that good. Hopefully I'm wrong though
16:9 for Super Mario 64? or 60fps for Super Mario Sunshine?
Galaxy 2 available now add on for $20 after the surprise Nintendo Direct on Friday.
I'm not holding out much hope of them adding the Y-inversion option to Sunshine. Luigi Mansion 3 has been out almost 1 year and is yet to be patched. Nintendo almost amended things with the system-wide remapping but failed to add stick inversions. Lack of control customisation is the reason I cancelled the pre-order. The only way to fix it is to use a cronusmax which doesn't work in handheld mode.
The patch fits a time-bomb which is set to explode the game on April 1st 2021
It gives you more stability.
@SeanDS89 oh it won’t come
@Heavyarms55 nah dude, I'm in the same boat with you. Been wanting this for too long. I could honestly not care less if they released them even in their scaled down format, let alone emulated or without Galaxy 2. So cheers mate: you won't be alone in playing through some seriously good nostalgia while everyone else bitches and moans.
Maybe its to allow Y-axis inversion? I'm not holding my breath.
Woohoo Galaxy 2!
RIP to all the people who unironically think this will add Mario Galaxy 2.
Of course it won't add Galaxy 2. It'll obviously add 3D Land.
@Heavyarms55 "I'm just gonna get the game and enjoy it. Alone. As usual."
Sounds like we're two peas in a pod.
@thugpipe I hope so. I'm not looking forward to wrangling Sunshine's camera without Y axis inversion.
Probably fixes the timer start noise in sunshine to sound correct instead of like a censor beep
Review I read mentioned slow down in Sunshine so hopefully helps with that.
Mario will finally get a cake at the end of Mario 64.
No son, it's gonna make every copy of the game personalized, just like the rumors said
@Thannus
1. The game shouldn't need day 1 patches before it even releases. Bug test the game before charging me sixty dollars.
2. Day 1 patches encourages publishers to release unfinished games as they've now conditioned gamers to accept that.
3. It means my physical copy is worthless.
Nintendo becoming EA isn't worth any amount of nostalgia.
@eRaz0r Switch digital pre-orders tend to unlock around 1pm Eastern in the US. It's infuriating.
I'm sure the patch adds an unlockable way to play Virtual Boy Wario Land.
@1031Gamer just do it on the Switch console
Probably is meant to squash some emulation bugs
Weird that a game with so little work into it needs a day 1 update. But probably just some minor things.
How is this even news? Every game has a day 1 update to move it into beta from alpha.
Yeah, it could be about the supposed Mario64 bug. But the reviewer from this site didn't seem to encounter it (he didn't mention it), so I guess it has to do with pirating.
@TalesOtaco Day one patches are a common thing for most releases, frequent patches are the problem. If your game performs poorly, crashes and softlocks on launch and needs dozens of upcoming patches to make it playable, you're doing it wrong. That doesn't seem to be Nintendo's case with any of their games.
Twilight Princess had a game breaking bug that wasn't patchable in the GameCube version. That entry was probably tested to exaustion and even so, ended up with a small issue no one noticed during the development and debugging steps. It just happens. Human failure.
It would be nice if the updates could update the cartridges. In the future when Switch downloads are unavailable, we will be left with tons of buggy or broken games. I bought Spongebob on day one and then the Switch downloaded a completely new updated copy of the game, ridiculous.
@Heavyarms55 agreed. As long as I can play it without the update 20 years from now I am fine. Either way I still own all the originals so I can still play it regardless.
I hope it adds invert camera options.
@Anti-Matter The original emulator developers must have put out an update so Nintendo did too.
I should have guessed. I haven't gotten a physical game in a while, but with the limited run of this one I wanted to go that route. I thought just maybe, since the games are older and should't need updates, that a cart would have everything needed on them.
Now before it even arrives it becomes another incomplete cart, dependent on having whatever console it's played on containing the missing code. This is why I usually just go digital now, the carts are always out of date.
Makes me miss the days when consoles weren't online, and the cart or disc had the whole game in one place
It reads MG2 is real I bet
@Thannus loot boxes and all the associated crap is common place now too, should we just accept that and never complain?
Day 1 patch means it wasn't ready to ship, I'd rather them take the time and delay, especially when a couple of weeks ago nobody 'knew' about it so it's not like it was a release date everyone was looking forward to. I get it for MP games where things like balancing/maps are constantly tweaked up to release and a MP game generally has a certain lifetime but for a physical console SP game, and one that is so old and final, what happens when they turn off the servers before you get the game? At least on PC it's easy to find updates to download and replace files if the official update path disappears.
I was tempted to get physical but now I might just get digital so I can at least back up everything on the SD card.
@Subtle24 I’m sure you’ll learn. I’ve faith in you.
@1031Gamer You can already change the button mapping system wide in the console settings.
Better be invert options!
@Antraxx777 but that will change all the buttons for the entire console and all of your games. No one wants to do that just to play 1 game comfortably. They need to add remapping within the game. That should not be an issue since these games are being run on an emulator.
@Nintendo_Thumb
You can’t change the axis mappings for control sticks in the system settings, so this won’t work.
I'm just worried they'll add more updates once I've already finished all three games. Guess I'll catch them on the second playthrough next year
@Dirty0814 I can only think of a tiny handful for times where that sort of thing could happen. It's generally not the case. Although plenty of games in recent years do have lots of additional content patched in post launch. It's just the case that that's how things are these days.
The only reason this insignificant update exists is to make those physical cartridges unplayable. Now it will always require to connect to the internet. I thought that maybe, just maybe, being a collection of old games, this one would be update free. Hence the cart will not become obsolete. So, thats it, no more physical games for me. Super Mario All Stars 3D Is the game that made me turn to digital.
Far out - games that have been out this long and they still can’t even put in the effort to make it work perfect from the start.
Wow...all of you complaining about a basic MINOR day one patch need to get a grip. The games work fine with or without the patch. This is pretty normal in today’s day and age since they have the ability to make fixes post launch. Some people will find anything to complain about.
@doctorhino You got it wrong. It's both a remaster and an emulation. If you don't own the game then watch someone playing it on YouTube. Also, thank god "users" (you probably mean illegal hackers) are not allowed to toy with these masterpieces.
This game just got A LOT more comfortable. Thanks Nintendo! 👍
My copy (pre-ordered with Best Buy) is sitting at UPS 15 miles away, until they deliver tomorrow.
Thanks god .. they are adding a pillow behind my back for more comfort.. gotta say it was needed. Not sure how its gonna fit thru the fibre optics tho
@Cosats lol illegal hackers. It's a PC program that you use if you legally own the disc.
They do work and are no hacking required. Just some configuration files.
I think the majority of people complaining about this game have spent less time in School than Greta Thunberg.
Just play the games and have fun
@Gerald so a right wing Mario fan, is that the target audience for your joke?
@doctorhino It was just a joke that wasn’t even necessarily political. Lighten up
@Maverick1982 He already does, in the credits!
In order to let you play the game more comfortably, we have also fixed some issues.
So you added Mario Galaxy 2
It might be to fix the soft lock for Mario 64 upon backing out of the game, but some have said that the leak was just a bad dump and the retail cart of 1.0.0 works fine. We'll see.
Tested it now, it seems to add Super Mario 128 and Mario kart 9. Im a bit disappointed, I would have preferred Hotel Mario on CDi emulator.
maybe the next update will include an update for Super Mario 64. possibly an update so that the game will have support for wide-screen TVs. we need it updated to 16:9 we are tired of having it in 4:3...lol
or better yet, maybe they can add Super Mario 64 DS to the All-Stars collection, as well as Super Mario Galaxy 2.
hopefully this update did not fix the backwards long jump glitch...
@stevenw45 I might be wrong, but I believe Backwards Long Jump wasn’t in it in the first place, as the 3D All-Stars version of 64 is a localisation of the previously Japan-exclusive Shindou version, which already had BLJ patched out from release
Seriously didn’t add invert!?
@AlienigenX You can play games without updating: it always gives you that option.
@Markiemania95
from what i remember the glitch was in the U.S. version of the game. as far as the different localizations of the game, i am not sure which ones had which glitches and what all of the minor differences are. (other than text speed...lol)
one of the most noticeable differences i noticed is what Mario says to Bowser while he is being thrown into the spikes during the boss battles. currently i think there are three or four different things that Mario says to Bowser during that scenario.
until recently, i didn't even know about the Japan-exclusive Shindou version. there was something about it on nintendolife in a past article talking about which version of Super Mario 64 is being included.
if you are right and they are using a patched version of that release then it is somewhat disappointing. I will not be able to use the glitch to complete the game with zero stars again! or for all we know there will be a hidden setting that will allow us to pick which localization of the game that we would like to play.
Wowsers, 129 comments about a 1.01 patch? Oops, better make that 130 😅
@Heavyarms55 it is. As long as the game is playable without the patch it is fine. I completely understand wanting to make things work better and all. The main thing I despise is when you buy a physical game and they say ohh well we're giving you dlc content of extra levels or areas. That just ticks me off. It's like why did I even buy it then. That right there has pushed me to not buy almost all games anywhere within the first year being released. Usually by then I know if my disk or cartridge will be the whole game. It is sad really.
It’s the peach nude patch, accessible via cheat code
@Dirty0814 Now see, actual new levels or story is what I want from DLC. Not all these microtransactions for cosmetics, faster level ups, timer skips or OP items.
Just so long as they don't lock content that's already done and on the disk/cartridge/download behind a DLC paywall.
DLC like the way BOTW, Pokemon and Fire Emblem have done it is what I like, new, addional content made after the fact and added to the game.
BOTW didn't add new areas though. I'm ok with adding extra things and things to do but adding completely new areas and levels and expanding the overall base game that to me is zzzzz. It makes what I paid for only half of what I paid for to me. It's why I wait to buy games, most come out with the complete edition later and I even wait then until their on sale even.
Was expecting "Added Mario Galaxy 2 to the game selection."
LOL,
N'ah really. But imagine!
@arabiansanchez I havn't in 25 years of 3D gaming, so can't see it changing now to be honest.
It's nice of you to put your faith in me, but it's probably better placed elsewhere. Haha.
@1031Gamer you can remap in the main settings of the switch I think
@AlienigenX : I bought a physical copy and fortunately, the "day one update" is already on the cartridge (bein version 1.0.1). No download required. I too was worried as I bought three copies, but my concerns have seen been alleviated. I just hope it doesn't receive any future patches.
Nintendo also periodically updates their first content releases by including the most up to date version of the game on the cartridge in reprints. This of course means that one would have to refrain from buying games at launch if they want the most complete possible cartridge.
@Heavyarms55 people are way to fussy just enjoy the games for whas they are we cant do anything about.the fact that its on switch is great anyway instead of dodgy pc roms.
@Shift I used to think what was the case, but turns out that if you choose the option to start the game it tells you that the update is mandatory, and sends you to the update screen again (so the choice offered is no choice at all)
@shinesprites @Snatcher I was thinking like they don't want physicals out there and they don't really ppl with modded stuff to be able to pull the code or introduced it for that purpose
@Heavyarms55 Definitely. I think the winiest people are often the loudest. Happily downloaded at midnight and I'm loving how nice these games all look!
So like normal, Simone has released an unfinished/not play tested properly game. This never used to happen. Game devs are just getting lazy. The Nintendo Seal meant something back then..
@Silly_G I got my copy in Australia and it was already on 1.0.1 as well.
@ilh Day one patches do not mean it’s unready to ship. They’re usually minor bug fixes or patches that barely impact the game’s performance. They’re no more impactful than a future bug fix or patch.
Day one patches are literally usually just fixes to issues found after publishing. If it wasn’t in a day one patch but instead in a later update, no one would bat an eye.
It isn’t like Pokémon SwSh or ACNH where they’re making you get the full game gradually - you have the full product with this. The day one bug fix does not change this.
@Ventilator Owning a disc of the original doesn't magically make it legal to emulate (not sure who invented that *****). Besides, you don't need a reason for it to be legal either. You're completely right about emulating these games being miles better (even though Nintendo fans don't want you to know that and feel like they have to pretend to be happy with 60 dollars of rushed product). The PC port of Mario 64 is so much better than the Switch one, it's insane.
@Cosats Meh, you ***** on the concept if creativity and freedom of expression. Creativity is human and by suppressing it, you're essentially denying humanity.
A rushed game is forever bad, but a delayed game... Oh wait!
@Thirteen1355 Mario 64..
Mario Sunshine is only 30 fps on Switch and you can't even invert X-Axis which is wrong way. Many games had forced inverted X-Axis back then for some weird reason.
Nintendo games on Wii U and Switch perhaps have the option to invert camera on all games. Why not in this collection?
Mario 64 is only 900p on Switch. Who knows why.
It should have ran natively in Widescreen at 1080p on Switch with better textures. It's not like Mario 64 have even close to same amount of textures as Mario Sunshine anwyay.
There is also Mario 64 running on Unreal Engine and looks gorgeous. I don't know if there is any complete remake, but still.
@Silly_G so you indeed have the day one update on the cartridge already?
@AlienigenX @Silly_G @kingeo My physical copy also was already v1.0.1 when I booted it up the first time, to my surprise
My copy from Florida is version 1.0.1 also and there was nothing to download. Odd?!
bet its gonna patch super mario 64 all glitch tricks.
