The biggest announcement of the recent Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct was the reveal of Super Mario 3D All-Stars. As this is a collection, of three old games, obviously we're curious to know how they'll look on modern displays.
Japanese website Games Talk has rounded up the resolutions of all three in both docked and handheld mode. Super Mario 64 obviously has the lowest display, while both Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy run at 1080p docked.
Super Mario 64
Docked mode: 960 × 720 pixels, Handheld mode: 960 × 720 pixels
Super Mario Sunshine
Docked mode: 1920 × 1080 pixels, Handheld mode: 1280 × 720 pixelsSuper Mario Galaxy
Docked mode: Up to 1920 x 1080 pixels, Handheld mode: Up to 1280 x 720 pixels
Thoughts on these resolutions? Tell us down below.

I'm curious if there's anything else "optimized" about them... like are there higher resolution textures, anti-aliasing, further draw distances, etc?
I suppose we won't know until it's closer to release.
I Guess improvements visually are only the HD filter.
Real shame they just remastered Super Mario 64... most N64 games considered ground-breaking at the time have aged pretty poorly, especially Super Mario 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Maybe just adding high-res textures and making new models for characters like in DS would have been fine. Bowser looked better on DS than on N64.
@DanElectrode in SM64, all the parts of Mario that aren't polygons are 'upgraded' (eyes, moustache and the M on the hat) so some textures are changed... but it could be the only example of such a change as far as I know.
@DanElectrode Nintendo and anti-aliasing. Good one. Lol
@neufel The other 2D stuff, like trees and coins, looks upgraded as well, but it would have been cool if they ported the DS version instead, which had proper 3D models for this stuff.
I actually don't think SM64 aged badly at all. Maybe it's the memories, but it still looks, feels and sounds as amazing as ever.
Wow that's kinda disappointing, especially for Super Mario 64. How is the game with the lowest amount of polygons and lowest quality textures not in 1920x1080? I hope the frame rates are good at least. Frame rates are always more important then resolution.
Pretty weird that they didn't upgrade 64 to a 16:9 resolution. I also wonder if they implemented a different method to control the camera, or if they retained the old sort of "snap to grid," of the N64 version?
I really wish I could get Mario 64 on it's own. The other games are not appealing, and neither is a $60 pricetag.
@luxoricious I still play it on my original N64, plays even better with a retrofighters pad. Great game, and immensely disappointing that they didn't give it suitable treatment for this re-release. Mario 64 literally put 3D games on the map. Everything in gaming that we enjoy right now is thanks to it's popularity...they should have gone hog wild with it, instead of the usual half-assed approach.
Looking at it, honestly Galaxy with its superb art direction and beautiful environments has aged incredibly well. Even if it's just a straight up-res it will still look fantastic in this day and age.
64 on the other hand, not so. That being said, I'm surprised at how many people in the comment section were disappointed with this collection. Maybe it's because the rumours already killed all element of surprise but three full 3D Mario games in one full-priced package is a steal.
Here in Australia to buy Galaxy on its OWN for the damn WII costs around $50 in most stores. I don't know in what world we live in that we expected these games to get full remakes in a current-age Mario engine. I think everyone is mislead to believe that isn't a gargantuan undertaking. To remake these games for the modern age would take a huge amount of time and resources, and I wouldn't be surprised if in that scenario we would get 3 full priced releases instead.
Lack of other game announcements from Nintendo may be disheartening, but this collection is far from disappointing. The sales will prove that notion.
Well Mario Sunshine and Odyssey look a lot better at least. Mario 64 kinda just looks like the Wii U version, but I'll take it.
I'm really surprised Super Mario 64 isn't the DS version with better models and extra playable characters. Seems very lazy and low effort
Everyone talking about textures in mario64 but if they didn't fix the literally broken camera system it's still unplayable at any resolution lol
I really wished 64 was the DS version...
It's just astounding to me the low effort Nintendo put into the Mario 64 port, and the lack of Mario Galaxy 2 in this 2nd All-stars is just egregious. Everyone should pass on this collection. It's the only way to let Nintendo know that we won't put up with this kind of low and poor efforts into our much beloved games.
@dojmin
DS may as well be its own game with how different it is from the original. Still would've been neat to have both in this collection, pick your poison have SM64 look like a early N64 or a late PS1 game.
Guess Nintendo's saving Mario 64 Remastered for the 40th anniversary.
If you had told me these games would be portable when I was a kid, I'd have thought you were crazy!
Haven't seen anyone bring this up yet, but N64 VC on Wii had an on-the-fly texture replacer, even though this was used to remove stuff like the Kawasaki ads in Wave Race some of the names on the files suggest texture improvements, it's quite likely Nintendo has done this again for the collection with even higher quality textures.
A fan hacked Mario 64 about two months ago and added a bunch of quality of life improvements to make it play more fluidly, and I'm already playing Sunshine and Galaxy on my Wii in HD for free. Nintendo please do keep up
Pretty great Direct. The Game & Watch will be harder to find than the NES and SNES Classics were. Mario 3D All-Stars is great and I’ll be buying it for sure. However like others have stated it’s disappointing Mario 64 is only just higher resolution. I was really hoping Nintendo would give it the full remake treatment with Mario Odyssey’s graphics engine.
I've preordered this and to put it bluntly I can't wait to play it.
That said I am slightly disappointed they haven't given it the full remaster / remake treatment, particularly with Mario 64.
I was hoping for something similar to what Activision did with Crash and Spyro where all 3 games were given a fresh modern lick of paint and looked absolutely stunning.
It will print money either way no doubt but does seem like a missed opportunity
@luxoricious i feel the same. I dip in to mario 64 quite often still and its a joy to play. I would have been disappointed if they had done too much to it in all honestly.
Mario 64 is as iconic as Super Mario Bros to me. I'm glad they haven't changed it much
@DanElectrode MVG will no doubt take a look at these.
@luxoricious Co-sign! Was my favorite game until I played Odyssey. Now Starfox 64 on the other hand... 😞
Lolol switch can't even handle a locked 1080p wii game. Good grief just release the switch "pro" already. Knowing Nintendo it'll be a continuation of the switch lite and be entirely portable, just capable of 1080.
Hey where's doom eternal? 🤣
@Papichulo Collectors have the older games in their library. The vast majority of Switch owners are not collectors. Sunshine, especially, has been the least accesible to current gamers. I think it is great that Nintendo is giving new generations better access to these games.
This is why Virtual Console should still exist.
Put the bare original on there for people that want it.
Update the Mario 64 graphics for the All-Stars package.
Sorted. Nintendo the bill for my advice is in the post.
@Wavey84 So you only play games that are 60fps on your tv? I don't get your logic. I've got a big tv and play plenty of 30fps only games which no stuttering. Maybe the issue is your actual tv.....
I still play Mario 64 regularly. A lot of the N64 3D platformers have aged really well. Banjo included
Mario n64 graphics needs to be remade like Xenoblade! Not looking good as it use to.
God... the whining from people who feel so entitled on this post gives me rage. If you don’t like what they’re offering, don’t buy it. And don’t compare it to illegal fan remasters either. Those aren’t valid. I, myself, am pleased with what I’ve seen and will be picking up a copy.
absolutely disgusting they aren't proper remasters or remakes.
@AgentGuapo Nintendo is a multi-million company and should do better with games like Mario n64 which didn't age well in graphics department, of which they needed to do something about, but no! they went on and released it in that same state as it was in 1996!!, With improved hd that changes nothing, not cool. I myself will pick a copy regardless.
The more I hear about Mario 64, the more disappointing it gets. Let me be clear. The game does not NEED anything done to it. I played it a few years ago, and I don't think it's aged as badly as people are saying. However, you have people that are doing a better job in their spare time with a lot of these PC port projects. Nintendo, with all their paid developers and access to source code should not be getting outdone by fan projects.
Mario 64 really needs the N64 analog stick to control well, modern sticks really don’t work as well. These ports are super lazy to be fair, but it will be nice to have for the handheld play. All 3 can be played at 4K with mods on PC anyway so not expecting anything special from the visuals.
When activision does a way better job at a lower price (Crash, Spyro remakes) you know Nintendo are a bad greedy company. I can mod this on PC emulators to look better and I'll even be able to play Mario Galaxy 2. I won't be a sheep and give in to their cheap tactics.
I’m not in the least surprised that 64 hasn’t had a full-on remake, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed.
Would be nice if they at least included some of the 64DS additions (the extra levels, stars and characters are great, as is the map screen, though the mini games are pointless and I dislike not having Mario as the starting character), or even just a Luigi mode (add him and maps to Sunshine too please).
Would also be nice if Sunshine had a way to keep better track of blue coins too.
But I realise these are all green pipe dreams, for the company that dropped the All-Stars 1 ROM onto a Wii disc for £50 and didn’t even update the in-game controller references. But woo! Bonus music CD!
I was hoping for remakes on the level of the Spyro and the Crash ones. Doesn't seem so here. Not that Galaxy needed much doing to to be fair.
I'm still taking it though of course
My guess is that they will all be sold separately after march @TG16_IS_BAE
Well I'm delighted it isn't the DS version of Mario 64, I much prefer the original and some saying the game has aged poorly is a bit of a joke as it still plays a lot better than the recent Spongebob or even Spyro remasters. Can't wait to play these games again on my Switch
Keen to play Sunshine again after all these years. Always loved it.
Really hoping we eventually get Super Mario Galaxy 2 to complete our 3D collections...
@Wavey84 Is there a source that indicates these will be 30fps locked? I didn't see anything in the article above.
While I totally understand that Nintendo could have done a "better job" on these ports, I'm very glad they almost didn't touched Mario 64. For me, the graphics are iconic and part of its style, added with a ton a nostalgia I must say. Mario 64 is just the very first game I ever played, and have fond memories of watching my sister play it while I was still too young to properly control Mario hahahahaha
I think Mario Galaxy 2 was a disappointment after the first one. Lacking a good story like its predecessor, it felt more like an expansion DLC to the first game. Not surprised it's not in the collection.
@Wavey84 oh absolutely! haha
This is not the Super Mario 64 we wanted. It is not about just playing it on the Switch, it's about playing version 3 on the Switch. It doesn't even make use to the Switch larger screen.
That said, its graphics, if nothing much else have improved and the three games are on one, if over expensive card.
The anniversary goodies were dragged out for so long it seemed as though a big announcement was coming and not just three very old, limited over priced ports, as welcome as they are.
Picking the bones of the Direct there is a little something for every one and not much else. And this announcement is not enough to fight of the new consoles from Microsoft and Sony.
For me it's the All Stars, partly to fill a very large gap in Nintendo's release schedule.
sounds like sm64 is emulated, otherwise it would be able to run at any arbitrary resolution and not just a multiple of 240p
@zool It's not overpriced. Sunshine has never been re-released before this and GameCube games sell for an absolute fortune nowadays. This collection is a big deal for the reason of allowing people to play it without breaking the bank alone (plus 2 of the greatest 3D platformers of all time) I could understand if they were selling them separately at full price.
Hope 1000 Year Door gets re-released at some point too which sells for when more. A Paper Mario All-stars with the first 3 games would be incredible.
@kepsux “literally broken camera”
Dude Mario 64 has full 360 degree camera control, which is more than could be said of other Mario’s that have followed it. How is it broken? If it gets stuck on the environment just zoom in or out. Simple...
@zool It's the version of Mario 64 I want, because nostalgia... I find most remakes a bit charmless. When I got the Crash trilogy I was disappointed you couldn't play with the original graphics.
@PretendWorking apparently
@Bustacap Yeah, and it's not even 1280×720!
I'd like to know, does anyone know how the camera is handles in Sunshine. Booted it up on my cube a few weeks ago and the camera controls are reversed (sp not inverted I guess) and it's unplayable! So I hope they have a "normal" camera or at least an option to change it.
@zool Overpriced? 3 of the greatest 3d platformers ever made all with enhancements and a product that will easily hold its value anyway.
I'm glad Mario 64 looks the way it does as that's how I remember the game, Sunshine looks spectacular as does Galaxy
@TG16_IS_BAE The chances are that the game would need huge changes to the code to be made in order to accommodate a widescreen aspect ratio being implemented. A lot of older games just don't play nice when forcing a widescreen mode, as developers usually created them with 4:3 in mind. This meant 'off screen' various weird pop ins, stuck character models or other bizarre aspects occur, as the developer always intended the area to be hidden.
Unfortunately lots of older games have struggled or failed to implement widescreen when being ported to modern systems.
Already played these games multiple times. Obviously all classics. Probably would have bought if SMG2 or SM64DS was included.
I'm still wondering why they havent done Mario 64 DS, so we can finally play as Luigi on a main console, as was intended on the original game
@Bunkerneath Probably because most of the extras require two screens and a stylus?
Let me 1st say I do love these games prior to talking on tech opinion. Figured doing best they can...just like when I see these 80's movies on the shelf advertised in"4K" disc or in Apple store in "4K." The ole saying: can't make Chicken Salad out of Chicken.........
It is what it is really. I'm probably most disappointed that Galaxy has a variable resolution - although I'm sure there's a logical reason for it.
Overall, it does feel a bit rushed and dare I say lazy. Would have been nice to have some bonus content in there - even an image gallery - but the soundtracks are something I suppose (although I have YouTube... :/)
Overall, excited to return to Sunshine after nearly two decades since my last time playing it!
@Bunkerneath Not only can they not do it, Nintendo never did anything with the specialize portable version of their Mario games. Other than a short Virtual Console re-releases, Nintendo rarely ever revisit these specialize portable versions of Super Mario games such as Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (SMB1 with more contents), Super Mario Advance (SMB2 with more contents), Super Mario Advance 2 (SMW/SMB4 with more contents), Super Mario Advance 3 (SMW2: Yoshi's Island with more contents), Super Mario Advance 4 (SMB3 with more contents), and Super Mario 64 DS (SM64 with more contents).
@Tourtus I don’t think increasing the resolution of Mario 64 would help it much at all. It doesn’t have much detail.
Just pre-ordered on Amazon IT
1080p on Sunshine and Galaxy?
I'm really interested in seeing how they're pulling off all the screen-space effects at that resolution. If the games are emulated, rather than running natively, that stuff would be a nightmare.
Conversely, legitimately porting all three games to a new chipset sounds like a right hassle, which wouldn't at all warrent a limited release.
Whats the point the game running at 960 × 720 pixels or even higher on handheld mode, when the console got only a 720p screen?
@dimi what do you mean whats the point in running a game at 720p on a 720p screen?
@PretendWorking
Yeah, they probably runs it on emulator rather than a proper port.
Did they fix the camera for Sunshine? That game is LITERALLY unplayable with the current one.
The only disappointment for me is that 64 is not 16:9. Since it wouldn't have done any work for it. Dolphin Wii Emulator for PC with the Virtual Console Version of 64 you only have to activate 16:9 and activate an Action Replay Code so that objects such as coins, trees and so on do not disappear on the left and right in the wider viewing area. And that works perfectly, and is the reason why I play 64 with Dolphin, like an emulator in the emulator. Instead of using independent N64 emulators that allow 16:9 but apparently the Action Replay code does not work so that it is error-free.
So Nintendo just has no interest in bringing 64 in 16:9. Let's hope there are enough voices that arise and demand 16:9. So Nintendo decides to bring a patch. It doesn't do any work, this adjustment takes a minute.
@Clyde_Radcliffe All I want is a playable Luigi, nothing to do with touch screen.
@Retro_Player_77 not really sure what you are getting at there, you first say they don't do anything with the ports, but then cite all the differences between them and the original.
@dimi
720p and 1080p describe the vertical amount of pixels.
960x720 is a 3x4 standard that fits perfectly on a 720p screen with black bars on the left and right.
@Wavey84
So what your saying is even the PS5/XBSX won't be good enough for you since most of those games will also be 30fps. Ratchet/Clank already don't even hit a full 30 consistently.
I mean if your PC master race then fair enough; me too but claiming 30fps isn't good enough on some hdtv is silly if you're not claiming it across the board no matter the system.
Dynamic resolution for Galaxy because these aren’t ports or remasters they’re just emulations and they struggled to get Wii running at 60fps at 4X resolution.
@carlos82 compared to Bioshock and Boarderlands, three games on each card for £35, it is expensive.
I don't get why Mario 64 "obviously" has lower resolution. That could probably run at 4k on the switch, easily (if it could output that).
Also, I think Mario 64 still plays wonderfully. Sure, the camera system is not absolutely perfect, but it's pretty good still. And the game in general is so much fun just to play around in. I think it looks good. It has style. The world feels solid. The newer mario games, though a lot of fun, feel a little "fake" to me, like Mario is running around a movie set where nothing is solid. Most games feel like this tbh.
@DanElectrode
In the Ghosts house of Mario 64 the Ghost is not hi-resz but it is definitely a less pixelated version
@Clyde_Radcliffe I understand. But there was the Wii version and the 3ds version.
@zool I can understand that argument, I'd just suggest that Nintendo games hold their value better overall and compared with Nintendo's own efforts such as Mario Bros Deluxe or Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, this is a pretty sweet deal
@Mortenb its a multiple of its original resolution making it much easier to emulate that way. The Xbox One X does exactly the same for og Xbox games so they don't actually hit full 4K
@Clyde_Radcliffe it is over priced if you compare it to what other companies charge for a three game package. It's just that Nintendo can get away with it, so it ups the price, they know what we will pay for it.
You tube reviewers are already suggesting you buy two copies, keep one in its wrapper, and eBay it when it's doubled in price. Nintendo won't complain about that.
I wonder if they removed that ugly low-poly Mario in SM64. You can't really see it as well on an old CRT display, but in HD... Hoo boy.
Actually the camera in Sunshine is horrible at times. I think Nintendo Life did an article on Sunshine back in 2017 indicating how that aspect of the game has moved on in leaps and bounds with Galaxy and Odyssey.
I hope they have fixed it but I doubt it somehow
@Wavey84 The trailer looks like they improved the framerate though, especially Sunshine.
@Mortenb I am assuming that without replacing textures or assets, the difference would be less noticeable.
I wouldn't call this lazy considering the pandemic could've affected development. I assume they didn't want to delay this collection and miss the anniversary.
My only problem with this collection is the price tag and that the digital version will also be available for a limited time. That is just anti consumer.
This collection is exactly what i expected other than the lack of Galaxy 2. No Galaxy 2 really stings as its the best game of the bunch and since Galaxy is in here its just like Nintendo intentionally held G2 out just to not give fans the full collectioknwe want.
Games look great in high res, i never expected any other changes and would rather play the original games than some sort of altered versions of the games instead.
So extremely disappointed there's no Galaxy 2 but wil definitely pick this up as its still a great collection and i dont have any of my old systems anymore so i haven't played these games in forever.
@carlos82 perhaps that is also a consideration @NIN10DOXD That makes sense, thanks.
@Reprise I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to put in the work to make it happen. Difficult things are not impossible.
You can clearly tell Mario 64 is running uncompressed textures. Even on the Wii U the textures always looked fuzzy and had the darkening anti-seizure filter (ever N64 Wii U VC game had it) and a bit blurry even on emulation. You can tell on the brickwork and paintings like the Boo and Peach tower that these are either re-drawn assets or uncompressed originals. The UI also looks super clear! I'm impressed Nintendo they could have just put Mario 64 in as a toss in with Sunshine and Galaxy, but they went through the effort to decompress everything. Those saying they cannot see a difference should pull up the GameXplain video where they put the two side-by-side there is a clear difference in the texture work.
Don't know what people think 1080p is, but you cannot achieve it with a game not running in Widescreen. So Mario 64 in 720p is a necessary evil as you just cannot run it in true 1080p without widescreen. Though Sunshine and Galaxy also look great even on a compressed YouTube video I can tell the clarity in the textures and it looks like Nintendo used slight AA as Galaxy looks way less jagged like it did on the Wii or even being emulated vanilla without those features enabled. Cannot wait to play these bad boys again over the holidays!
Please tell me they’re all 60fps
Seems odd to me that sm64v7 is released as a fan project on modded switch. Plays widescreen hd and has improved camera mechanics. I know these are frowned upon but shows how easy the game can be improved. From what I've seen, it looks superior to this version Nintendo is bringing over.
@MeowMeowKins Good question. I started replaying Sunshine a couple of weeks back and the inverted camera controls are causing me all sorts of headaches. I really hope it can be inverted in the options.
Weird they didn't make Super Mario 64 1080p widescreen for it like they added to Super Mario Sunshine. I also noticed by the trailer Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine both look like they're running at a higher framerate than the original, I couldn't tell with Super Mario Galaxy, but I think SMG already ran at 60fps on the Wii, so my guess is all three games are running at 60fps.
As long as the ground in Super Mario 64 is no longer coated in butter, I'd even play the game in its original resolution.
@roboshort It can help make edges much smoother looking though.
@Wavey84
LOL. Welcome to PC land you console kids. Now you're going to get sliders for performance. What a sham.
Consoles are to play a game that's static. Now they're going PC on it. So funny. And that PS5 super console is a sham as well. The new 3000x series is already killing it. Enjoy it console kids.
@theJGG I do agree with you, but a full blown remake requires a lot more work than you think. It could be a good year and a half just to do one for this size. Then if they did remake 64, people would probably complain that sunshine or galaxy wasn't remade. Next thing you know it, they were planning for this game with Wii U hardware before people knew the switch existed.
Any word on the frame rates of the games? Super Mario 64 with a 60 frames per second would be excellent.
@neufel And his buttons!
I have a feeling we will be seeing a vol 2 with 3d land, NSMB, Galaxy 2.
@TG16_IS_BAE Mario galaxy is not appealing? You're crazy
@sword_9mm don't worry that's just the way he is. He won't buy a game unless it's 60 fps for some reason 🙄 He's made similar comments on push square so no hypocrisy at least I suppose
@HammerKirby Not crazy, I just didn't like it when I played it back in the day. Not everybody has to like all the things you do!
I just hope for a modern camera in SMB 64. That's my only gripe about the original game.
So, this is intriguing. Only Super Mario Sunshine runs at the maximum resolution, while the other ones don't? I bet they could even double the frame-rate.
It's ironic the modern Mario games on Switch run at better settings than these, so this makes zero sense. Tech legacy issues, maybe?
@Wavey84 wrong this is whats wrong with the nintendo community people whine and critique but in the end buy it anyway it serves no purpose to judge something and put it down but then buy it. its ok to point flaws out its like food you love or a movie but parts you dont like which is fine
but pokemon fans do the same thing trash the games and then buy it anyway its a waste of time.
@Wolf_Link nope by the time that happens zelda 35th and nintendo is gonna focus on his 35th in 2021.
@Wavey84 wow i have a laptop for $600 my ps4 my switch the "computers are too expensive" arguement is like someone saying video games make people violent. just please stop. im running persona 4 on my laptop no problems i also stream. dont gatekeep
@luxoricious but it has aged badly. if you play with another controller besides the original N64 controller.. the movement on the world is hard. The 3D is old. Other games are easier to play with another sort of controller. I hope Nintendo did fix the 3D movement on map/world better. Some walks are hard to pull off with other controller.. unless you play with original N64 controller. The games did age bad in that regard
@Investor9872 The most spoiled comment award in this section clearly goes to you. This collection clearly is appealed more towards the fans who were not around in the 90s or early 2000s to experience the originals or are not console hoarders. 64 DS would have been a hassle to port as it was designed with 2 displays in mind and it's pretty much its own thing compared to the original. I agree though that they could at least made it so you could choose between widescreen and 4:3. Galaxy 2 is just Galaxy but with Yoshi included tbh and I really don't get the Nintemper Tantrums around its exclusion as it wouldn't have made much of a difference really. I played it on Wii way back and it felt mostly the same as the first one. This collection is more of a historical compilation, at a price that is fair (at least for having Sunshine and Galaxy in HD in one pack) than a remake bonanza. Grow up!
I´d love to play Sunshine and Galaxy, but I refurse to play that lazy port of Mario 64. I wish we had Galaxy 2 instead!
I really hope we can get the games separately someday...
I am actually really happy, that they haven't remade Mario 64.
I have such fond memories of the game and its aesthetics, so I think this texture polishing treatment it has received is wonderful
As for Galaxy 2 not being included... yeah, it sucks.
@sword_9mm Look, I've got a console and a PC, but don't shame people for having only one. Consoles are easier and cheaper, so please, shut up
@theJGG I was thinking the exact same thing. It would have been really cool if they moderized these games and gave u the ability to flip back and forth between the two....
Wildly pathetic release. Galaxy 'up to' native resolutions? They couldn't even get it to stay there? A friggin' 14 year old Wii game with dynamic resolutions? LMAO...
@Sculptor We all look forward to your remaster of these games.
@Grot The whiners likely aren't old enough to have experienced the difference between the original SMB games on NES and the All-Stars game on SNES.
@Investor9872 Nope, not passing, and not getting outraged over phenomenal games coming to the Switch. I even like that SM64 is true to the original graphics and art, but improved over the original 240p resolution we played it in 25 years ago. I pre-ordered two physical copies, one to play and one to keep pristine in packaging.
I'm still buying it, but its a real shame that the PC Port that was made from the leaked source code is actually a better copy, supporting higher res, 16:9, and even supported for updated textures.
@Marios-love-child legit how i feel but even then this collection is probably going to sell more than the crash and spyro trilogies even if it's limited time
@Wavey84 lol the C9 is the poor man's holy grail. Approved by youtubers who can't afford better
@Papichulo not sure how you’re doing that considering the Wii isn’t HD capable. But enjoy your delusion I suppose
They have done the bare minimum with those games. Still, if you have never played them before its a must.
Even I myself might buy it, though I already have played the games (and I still have those). My N64 controller has become very stiff (the analogue stick, though it still works) and there is something weird with the Gamecube shoulderbuttons (those are analogue and it seems they also have some kind of "drift". But not the terrible drifting from the Switch luckily).
Personally I would say Sunshine is the best, while Mario64 is the worst. But all 3 are worth playing.
Its nonsense that they are only temporarily available though. Nintendo doesn't love money?
@biaros88
I have it running at 1080p with a locked 60fps just fine, emulated on a Raspberry Pi with 10% of the Switch's power. There's just no excuses for Nintendo here.
@Wavey84 https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/lcd-led-led-oled-panel-difference,5394.html
Please read this before hyping up OLED. According to this OLED suffers from a max cap of 90 Hz Refresh Rate. Go below 90 Hz on VR, and you can easily suffer from the low refresh rates. They also decrease their light quickly, resulting in them "making the screen less and less bright." A com-mentor "nitrium" also pointed out that OLED panels suffer from burn-in. If you used this as a monitor, any page you have up too long will have the image burned in. So you can never use OLED as a monitor.
On the flip side, they have the best color available because they aren't just blocking light with polarizers and crystal diodes cleverly. But IPS isn't that far behind.
"chances are you game on an LCD/QLED, meaning your TV's motion smearing/blur hides the effect."
Any sources to back this up? Lower framerate means more blur, as highlighted in the article. So saying OLEDs have less blur is not true.
"I'm not interested in building a PC or having some loud towering brick in my living room or spending easily about $1500 to have it doing what I want Ala maxed graphics, native 4k+60fps or 1440p+120fps etc.
Or maybe I'm just being ignorant and.the following above really isn't as big if a Deal as I'm making it out to be.
Oh and Console kids? You sound like a kid"
You don't buy a PC just to do gaming. It is incredibly helpful for being productive. You can compress videos, images, and files down to make the most of your storage space.
@Wavey84 You can pop up a guide on another screen for a game. You can render videos and tons of other neat tricks. It is not just about video games.
However, video games on PC are great. Humble Bundle, Amazon Prime, Steam Sales, and various other websites practically give you games for free. You will never run out of games to play on PC. And you will never finish your backlog on Steam . Additionally, emulators exist and can give games more life. If you own the game already, you can rip it onto PC and significantly enhance it. Or play fan-made levels, mods, and so on. I played this Super Mario Sunshine fan-made hack and it was a blast! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soWCC21M_mE.
However yes, it can be expensive. My PC is almost never that noisy. If anything, writing to my old hard drive makes the most annoying sound (buy SSDs only). Otherwise, you can run games pretty quietly. My switch has often been much more noisy than my PC. To get a good PC for ideal gameplay, it can cost a lot yeah. But I've found maxed out 1080p is usually fine. Due to the Nvidia 30 series being just announced, a lot of 4k capable cards are available for less than $500 now, which was incredibly expensive before. We have no idea if consoles will hit 4k true resolution and be that price. The Xbox One X doesn't do native 4k, it does 1080p and upscales it to 4k. Which can result in textures being blurry compared to native 4k. This clip shows this off well: https://youtu.be/WQ9SXOg-e1I?t=59
This is known on Nvidia cards as DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) and can go up to upscaled 4k just fine (with roughly 4k resolution framerate scaling).
The standard PC build can cost $500-$800. For your needs, I would say $800. Then while new consoles are coming out, the only concern you need is replacing the motherboard, cpu, and gpu. Cases, fans, power supplies, DDR4 RAM, Storage, Air-Coolers, and so on don't go bad as often. A current gen CPU can last you 4-6 years and longer. Only reason I switched from my 6600k was due to Monster Hunter World PC being horribly optimized. Then my Nvidia 1070 is still going strong and I'm finding it hard to justify a new graphics card, unless I want to get into 4k finally. My power supply from EVGA did get messed up, but I called them and they sent in a replacement just fine.
@Wavey84 Once you go PC, you won't have to worry about whether a game's release is 1080p 60 fps minimum. You can just run it there consistently. However, if a game breaks you need to find a way to fix it. This involves going on Steam checking the game's cache to make sure nothing is missing, looking up errors, and fixing them. For this reason, PC gaming blocks off newcomers that just want a simple plug and play experience, like with an iphone vs android.
I'd say go research it. You need a lot of time invested to make sure you make the correct purchases, or misconceptions like your OLED opinions will occur.
If I said anything you don't like, first look it up and then ask if you are still confused. For PC building, there are TONs of chats that can help you. Like Tomshardware's forums where users with over 1000+ selected answers can help you for free. I can also help as I am often researching this stuff every other day. Like today with the panel differences article.
So all they've done is bump the resolution, that's not much of an incentive to buy.
@kepsux at any point where lakitu cam isn’t working, switch to mario cam and zoom out. Should help a lot in Tick Tock Clock and some other levels. Except for the igloo and pyramid, the camera is a disaster in those places no matter what lol.
Call me when they actually add automatic camera options.
@Tourtus uh becuase 1920x1080 is a 16:9 resolution and this game is in a 4:3 resolution thus the resolution we have for M64
@codyf It can't be enhanced?
@TG16_IS_BAE The game will eventually be released digitally as a stand alone game after March 2021. So you'll only get to complain about the lack of a physical version.
@theJGG Zelda Ocarina of Time was remade for the 3DS, breh.
@GC-161 I haven’t seen any confirmation about that, so you have a news source?
@TG16_IS_BAE I expect Ninty to sell SM64 as a standalone game down the line.
Because they like money.
@GC-161 That would be nice, but they limited the mini consoles even though they were in high demand, so they don’t always seem to act like they like money.
@TG16_IS_BAE Mario 64 would have stuck out like a sore thumb if it was remade and the others weren’t. Might as well make a definitive version somewhere down the line (that combines elements of 64 and 64 DS).
@tobsesta99 It sticks out like a sore thumb now lol
Why is Sunshine’s resolution consistent in handheld but Galaxy’s is ‘up to...’?
@TG16_IS_BAE Selling Mini versions of their past consoles that require them making deals with retailers (for space in their shelves) is VERY different from releasing a digital game. Not a good comparison at all.
But the Mario 3D collection is already breaking records on amazon. Eclipsing any other game (or even console) sold this year. So after the physical version runs out of its first and only print, you can bet your tight butt that Nintendo is going to start selling the digital versions down the line.
Because its EASY money. Which is what I really meant in my previous post.
@Tourtus if it was in widescreen it would be 1920x1080 but its not hence the resolution its in
@GC-161 They aren’t selling a physical version?
@codyf I know that, but they upgraded Sunshine from 4:3 at 480i all the way up to 16:9 1920x1080p. They should be able to bump up SM64 too.
@lacaras4 Sorry, I like your optimism, but pretty sure it’s only Galaxy at 60fps. The other two will be locked to 30, but should still be noticeably better than the janky frame rates in original hardware. (Especially 64.)
@TG16_IS_BAE Not by themselves, no.
@dojmin Ah, yes. Super Mario pixelated 64. My favorite DS game.
