Microsoft used The Game Awards 2019 to show off its new home console, revealing not just its name but what it looks like, too. Project Scarlett is no more; long live the Xbox Series X, the fourth game box from Microsoft.
In case you hadn't seen it already β which would be understandable, as this is a Nintendo-centric site β this is what the Xbox Series X looks like:
It's boxy, we'll say that much. But, as is often the case, the true way to find out the reaction of the masses is to turn on your computer and type "Twitter" into the address bar of your favourite browser.
What's the verdict? It looks like a tall GameCube, apparently:

What do you make of the Xbox Series X? Does it make you think of two GameCubes stacked on top of each other? Let us know your amusing observations by posting a comment below.

Really? Itβs more like a pc. This is some weird thinking but alas.
I like the design, but it wonβt fit underneath my television.
Is that the actual Xbox Scarlett or redesigned of Xbox One ?
@Anti-Matter It's Project Scarlett.
Love it. Reminds me of the only other "tower" designed console, the NEC PC-FX. Microsoft breaks the mold!
@Damo
Wut ?!
So what is the ability of Xbox X ?
Can it play ALL previous Xbox games by disc ?
@Anti-Matter It can play all XBOX ONE games and all XBOX 360, XBOX games supported by the XBOX ONE. It will also play XBOX Series X games.
I never thought I would say this but....... That's one ugly Xbox (and very impractical as well... How am I supposed to have it under my TV?)
I mean, i do like that its different... but it wont fit in my tv stand... which is fine, because i wont be buying one... so, I guess i like the look. shrug
I love the look of it. The Doctors new Tardis
You can lay it sideways in order to make it fit under your telly. The name is quite confusing though, even for me.
It's as if they sat round the table in silence, pondering the next design for hour upon hour, until someone finally spoke:
"Ok, just hear me out. What's the biggest problem in gaming hardware? Heat. Well, you know what, heat RISES".
@sanderev
But i guess Xbox X will not able to play Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix series from OG Xbox, Dance Dance Revolution Universe series + Dance Evolution + Kinect games from Xbox 360. I only have interest with those Xbox games above and i'm sure those games are definitely 100% NOT registered in Backward Compatible. π’
@danemord you can lay it horizontally
@Octane Oh that's good
@Hck We did a piece on that many years ago: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/05/feature_what_nec_and_hudson_did_next_the_disasterous_story_of_the_pc-fx
I like it. They probably went through many concepts and just decided on the simplest one that could accommodate the hardware.
Itβs very un-Nintendo since itβs just a brutalist black box.
Iβm calling it the X-Beast.
Thatβs an interesting design. Maybe to facilitate cooling, create a tunnel effect?
They really need to fire their console naming team... :/
Designing consoles is definitely not Microsoftβs area of expertise I know itβs whatβs inside that counts but that is ugly and impractical as well
@Anti-Matter Xbox One X is not the same as Xbox Series X aka Project Scarlet.
@koekiemonster It can be used horizontally so yes it will fit.
uh, it's square - that doesn't mean it looks like a Gamecube anymore than... other square things.
Anyway I like it. It makes the Xbox deserve the 'box' in its name more. In generally I've not much like the design of Xboxs over the years - but I would consider getting this β and it would be my first Xbox.
Who would have thought we would see yet another black slab with pretty much the same controller again, and with more power. Colour me surprised.
Name is too confusing, sounds too close to Xbox One X
Looks fine although a bit impractical. They really need to work on their naming though.
Alan Watts is the voiceover. Cool guy.
ok for starters, why is it so big? no doubt its a powerful system but it seems like it'd be awkward put next to a tv, is it supposed to go on the ground? just seems like a weird choice to design it so tall, even on its side
Xbox namings always confuse me. I thought they were on their 5th generation... or was that 3rd?
@Hughesy really? Thatβs cool
The name is pretty bad TBH. It's not as bad as Wii U where mass consumer confusion may result, but Microsoft surely could have some up with a better name...
The specs seem to be insanely strong, which is very good. There is no chance Sony will be able to one-up Microsoft in specs like they did back in 2013.
@mgnoodle
That's at least something
Well, it's always a cube or a rectangular prism. I mean they could go crazy and design a polyhedron shaped outer shell but I think that would be fairly impractical. XD
Man I loved the One X design, itβs bloody perfect. This series X wonβt fit under the TV but I can see why they have gone this route. More power, more heat, more stress on components but still Iβm kinda gutted. Was hoping they could push the one x size/design with more power.
@danemord Easy mate, just turn it on its side and it'll then double up as a TV stand in its own right.
When I first saw it and described it to a friend I said two gamecubes.
@westman98 some devs have been saying the ps5 is stronger. But we'll see.
It's a cool looking console. Quite a bit more interesting the the X1 and PS4 designs IMO.
I still think the original PC Engine and Dreamcast are the coolest looking consoles to date though.
The GameCube was cute and colorful. It even had a handle. It was like a lunchbox that played games.
This thing looks like a fridge or air humidifier or something
You had me at GameCube.....
Iβll get either this or ps5 day one and itβll be down to how backward compatible both end up really being.... if Xbox is just current Xbox and 360 games and no new ones then that puts ps5 in pole position as I think they are gonna go hard on bc
Hunky looking unit, and Hellblade 2 is enough to make me want it.
That does not look like it will fit under my telly.
@Trajan @westman98 The current knowledge is that both will be using AMD Zen 8-core processors at about 3.5 Ghz. I think I heard somewhere that PS5 clocks a little bit faster. The big question is storage and price...PS5 is going all in on SSD to make load times invisible. I'm not sure what this one will do. Series X may be the "close enough and a little cheaper" option of the two.
Good trailer. Love the design. Not sure about the name but it might grow on me. Iβm guessing there will be more than one - to justify the word βseries.β
I love the design. It is clean and nice. Just make it quiet and not requiring internet for set-up.
It's the monolith from 2001.
So Nintendo basically didn't release any first party news despite tweeting us to watch and this is the passive aggressive article we get mocking Microsoft which released a new console. That makes sense.
Cause calling it Xbox 4 would make too much sense !
Xbox, Xbox 360 Xbox one, Xbox, series X.
then again both the naming and the hideous form factor fit the xbox aesthetic
It kinda looks like a fridge or a monolith.
@EVIL-C
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfe8tCcHnKY
You know what this is
Maybe the design will be slightly smaller when the Xbox Series X S comes out a few years after this one.
I'm sure there's a reason for heat dissipation and whatever, but putting that disc slot near the bottom, behind where you'll be putting all of the boxes, your controller, your headphones, your whatever, is like the most impractical place they could have imagined.
It's like they all sat around and had this conversation:
Designers - Where should we put the disc slot?
HQ - How about underneath the bottom so nobody wants to put in a disc and they all go digital, saving us money?
D- Well, um, ok, but people might not see it and think it's SAD again.
HQ - OK, good point, how about on the back?
D - Yeah, again, about not seeing it...
HQ - Huh, what? OK, yeah we got ya.
D - So...?
HQ - What? Oh yeah right, where to put the slot.
D - do do do do, do do dum, do, duh do do do, do do dum
HQ - OK, put it where people can see it, but near the bottom behind all their stuff so they can't put discs in and sign up for Game Pass.
D- Sure, why not.
@ShadowSmile More like - Xbox 1 S, Xbox 1 SAD, Xbox 1 X or Xbox Series X?
Who cares what it looks like. It needs great games. My Xbox One collected dust.
Personally i think it looks pretty boring... It's just a black box and probably too big. I would instead get a gaming PC that can also be upgraded...
@ShadowSmile yes because Nintendo would never make poor naming decisions.
@KitsuneNight π π Hopefully the XSX is not homicidal, and adds a shot of adrenaline to human evolution.
@WOLF13 the best place to play third party games. Oh wait I forgot Nintendo fans only play Nintendo games because all else is trash.
@EVIL-C Ohhh Yeah.
I didnβt know what planet we were on in that trailer. Might be some alien tech Microsoft got their hands on.
Yuck.
Consoles need to look like home AV equipment and disappear.
Not look like an oddball PC, a toy, or anything like that.
It was fine back in the day because they were basically thought of as toys but now they're multi-media boxes that play games. Make it look like an AV box.
I wasn't going to buy it anyway so I guess I have no dog in that fight.
@ShadowSmile
Exactly, seems Microsoft learned nothing from the Wii U.
@NotTelevision LOL. Who in turn, sent it to Europa. Fascinating experiment. π
@KitsuneNight or maybe they are committed to marketing the series one x differences. Nintendo before the switch was notorious for not buying ads to promote their stuff. Between no advertising and the name Wii u Nintendo shot themselves in the foot. At the very least both Google and Microsoft are committed to marketing dollars.
@CupidStunt the thing is I could see a lot of people buying a PlayStation 5 just because it fits under the TV, assuming Sony go with another inoffensive TV box.
@sixrings
Even so, it wil stil be very confusing for the average consumer to differentiate between the Xbox One X and the series X.
Unless MS starts a marketing onslaught that's lasts and entire year and doesn't let up.
We are initiated so to speak.
We know whats up.
The average consumer in the street or the parents shopping for their kids ?
They are clueless. They just know the word Xbox.
@EVIL-C
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg3G1E2tNCA
Just sliightly tenuous.
@KitsuneNight the problem is that Microsoft related they system one generation after PlayStation. If you think the naming is confusing now. What would a customer think if they walknto a store next year and one option is to buy a ps5 or a xbox 4.
@sixrings
Lovely
Also is it the series ECKS or ten ?
i can see MS go for the latter .
After all Apple insisted that mac os X is pronounced 10 not ecks.
So it's mac os 10 10.4 for example
Cause that makes sense .
@KitsuneNight also maybe xbox will have crazy xbox one sales next black Friday to get rid of the remaining stock. And by the Holliday season when you walk into a store you might only get the option of series x or series s.
@sixrings
Lot's of maybe's there.
X-Oblong, that looks stupid
@KitsuneNight lots of maybes with every console. The only facts from yesterday is Microsoft showed up with something and Nintendo showed up with nothing but a ex Nintendo executive to announce the indie award which is appropriate since that's the type of third party games Nintendo fans get to play.
@ShadowSmile Would've been a better joke had you said Xbox X please instead of exactly what the assistant asked...
@Mario_64 It's been mentioned twice now but yea, didn't know that you could do that
My understanding is that its fully backwards compatible with all generations of xbox games. DAY 1 for me.
Hate the name, love the concept. Not sure if I'm sold on the design but I'll still get it day one. Really pumped for next gen!
Do y'all know you can lay it sideways?
It looks interesting. Call me a dumb millennial but I like the box. It looks sleek and very modern, the green on top just was cool. And the Xbox controller design is perfect the way it is.
I just hate the name! I swear people are gonna get the names confused and think it's another upgrade of the Xbox one instead a new hardware (Wii and wii U). Should of just kept the codename Scarlett..,. Like how Xbox name was decided, they couldn't think of a better name so they just kept it's codename, which was Xbox
I definitely won't be getting any new hardware day one cause I'm a broke college student, but I will keep an eye out for the following year or two after release when it'll have games worth upgrading. Either PS5 or Series X. But if switch pro is announce.... I will SWITCH to the new one. Okay I'm done, I'll leave now
Gamecube was a 3D Square, hence cube. This is an orthotope, so GameOrthotope. π€£
Now this is what I call a sleek console. Highly unpractical one, because it won't fit under my television, and I'm not about to put my console on the floor in front of it, so I'm not going to buy one, but it is nonetheless a sleek, minimalist design.
Now, the PS5... THAT is fugly. Looks like what an 80s teenager would think a console of "the future" should look like. Logos, buttons, lights, ridiculous curves, and so on... It's also the type of thing that would make me feel I have a freaking toy under the TV, not a piece of high-tech electronics...
That new Xbox does look the part though. Just sad that the format is just highly unpractical to so many people out there.... I mean, didn't anyone at Microsoft think about the space most people have to put their pieces of entertainment equipment in? Like, you know, the standard places in TV furniture where most STANDARD AV equipment goes in?
It looks kinda cool actually. Only issue I can see is that it's physically impossible to pick up. They should add a handle.
I don't mind the look of this, but man the name is terrible. It's always sad how the project names are almost always better than the final name for the counsel.
@Cathousemaster this coming from a fan of the company who named their last console the `Wii U`. Ok.
It's a mini fridge. Lol.
XBOX ONE X SERIES X S 360 X ONE X 2.
@Realnoize You do know that no one from the public has actually seen the PS5, right?! Don't mistake the dev kit for the actual console.
AK makes the best tweets
@Gs69 And their naming has been pretty bad too. At least they try, I guess, unlike Sonyβs uninspired naming.. aside from the Vita
Microsoft has top of the world industrial designers and engineers, and all they can come up with is a lame name and a 90βs PC design. I laughed really hard when I watched that, it looks like a Gamecube...development kit
Huh? But last time I read TV Tropes, "two Game Cubes duct-tapedtogether" was the description for Wii... But I guess they didn't mean the form factor.π
Didn't Nintendo already release a system that was just two Gamecubes taped together?
I dont care how the outside looks. My pc isnt beautiful either lol.
The switch dock is also uggly but i love the switch.
It depends on what microsoft has to offer in terms of games.
If they show a beautifull working Killer instinct i am sold.
I love halo and gears but they dont convince me to buy an new xbox.
So now its a battle between sony and microsoft to convince the gamers.
@KitsuneNight Nothing will ever beat the failure of naming a console like "New" Nintendo 3DS/XL/2DS XL.
@westman98 "There is no chance Sony will be able to one-up Microsoft in specs like they did back in 2013"
They will just six-up them in the games department
day one purchase for me (unless nintendo releases a sweeter looking switch pro with bluetooth and a slightly more powerful processor for better framerates), but all in all, the series x looks sexy as all hell.
would've called it Xbox monolith. I'm into the bulky design btw, aiming for sleek is part of what caused the red ring of death, and now i'm kind of wishing the switch or eventual switch II would be more like a thick new 3ds with that fancy face tracking glasses free 3d and horizontal dock so the joy sticks aren't resting against gravity.
https://www.youtube.com/feed/trending
Its trending... Im buying one... I dont think Im the only one.
@Zuljaras And let's not forget the Switch Lite: aka the Switchless Switch...
xbox is getting as convoluted with it's console names as dragon ball is is with super saiyan names
i mean, whats next? Super Xbox One Super Xbox 4?
I guess the design is fitting what with so many clamoring for "something discrete beneath their TVs." It's a giant Roku box for all your houseguest knows. I won't be buying it.
The only way the name won't get super confusing for consumers, is if MS forgoes multi generation versions of games (COD Ghosts for example. They could in theory, have a disc that has the Xbox One version and the Series X version, even if an update was required for the Series X, it would still be viable and less worrying for consumers. But yes, Microsoft change the goddamn name while you still have time!
@bobb It will be the 4th generation Xbox released.
Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One (which includes the Xbox One X), and now Xbox Series X.
I donβt mind the design except for that little logo in the corner, it wouldnβt have killed them to have done more. I really feel like the logo is just there to tell everyone that itβs not a speaker or something. I will say I hate the name, itβs neither simplistic and clear like Sonyβs nor descriptive and informative as Nintendoβs minus Wii U.
disc slots are a bad idea.
They get crud in them and scratch discs.
A tray is always better.
Nope, I hate the name and the console design. I like my consoles to at least have a modicum of personality to them. Even the Gamecube had a charm to its design. Consoles seem to be going more and more to just boxes with a logo on it.
@GrandScribe switch lite which doesnt switch is descriptive? DSi is desciptive... what does i stand for? Nintendo has had its fair share of goofs too... Numbering the systems is the easiest but its hard to do that when youre late to the party.
Before the GameCube wasn't there an Apple / Mac computer that was a small cube?????
Who is naming these consoles at Microsoft? They get worse with each iteration.
What? Game Cube is evolving!
Congratulations! Your Game Cube evolved to X-Box Series X!
Meh, Scarlett sounded better.
@rjejr Actually, from a design standpoint, and indeed also from an operational/heat dissipation standpoint, it makes perfect sense to put that drive where it is. I think we can rest safely in the knowledge that they actually DID think this through, before deciding where to put it...
And on any model Xbox, except for the original one, it has always been in that specific spot, so that it'll be in the top left when you place it horizontally, and when it's in vertical position, the heat will be directed away from the drive because it's then situated on the lower left, in what will most likely be the "cool zone" in the casing.
(edit: I actually made a bit of a mistake there, because when vertically oriented, it is different from previous generations, but because they've changed the direction in which you place it horizontally, the result in that position stays the same)
When in horizontal position, the heat automatically stays and is dissipated on the right side, which as mentioned, is par for the course for the design of multiple generations of Xboxes.
Susan Boyle will love this console
https://youtu.be/Aeo86iOS0QU < I dreamed a dream of dreams
@sixrings
I prefer to play 3rd party on PS4. Most of my time playing games is on PS4. Iβve bought 3 Switch games.m (zelda, odyssey and Luigi).
It reminds me of Alexa. I am going to call it the Alexbox.
@WOLF13 so you prefer to play games in their less then optimal resolution and frame rate?
They really caught us with surprise, didn't they? But Hellblade II is the only thing that I can relate to "excitement", it even has a share button, and that's what we already have with PS4 and Switch! (well, more like capture).
Speaking about the console itself, the design is quite innovative compared to the typical horizontal-styled box we've seen this gen, but it looks a bit... strange at the same time, like a gigantamaxed Gamecube with a strange name, I mean, why "X" at the end? Are they trying to evoke the Wii U name fiasco? Or is it part of an aspect found in the console itself?
@Trajan @BlueKnight07
The base PS4's GPU is 40% faster than the base XBO's GPU and utilizes better RAM.
The PS5 may indeed be a bit more powerful than the Xbox Series X (we dont know for sure, especially since the XBSX specs are no joke), but it wont have a 40% faster GPU and better RAM compared to the Series X unless the PS5 retails at $600.
@westman98 does it need to be 40% faster though?
I bought a pro earlier this year instead of a One X because it had the games I wanted to play.
@Trajan
No of course not.
I'm just saying that's how much of a lead the PS4 had on XBO in terms of GPU strength back in 2013.
The PS5 and XBO will have much more similar specs, with no one console being noticeably better than the other.
@sixrings I didnβt buy the X. With wasting money on Xbox one and poor first party titles, the difference between ps4 pro and x isnβt that big of a deal.
WiiU just did a happy dance.
βNow my name is NORMAL!β
Who is in charge of names at the Xbox studios? They get dumber all the time... Series X? Thatβs not going to roll off the tongue...
βHey wanna come play the series X?β
βIs that a tv show?β
@Batty5 that sounds like a way better name than the one they gave it...
@WOLF13 well then you can't say you prefer to play games on the pro. You simply don't have the option to play third parties on the x. I assume the pro got the nod for exclusives which is ok. But my original statement was xbox one x is the best place to play third party games.
man, would be nice if consoles got smaller instead of bigger, this is about as ridiculous as new phones now adays. Nintendo is the only one leading the way of consoles here. if i want immersive gaming, ill get a pc. But good god. This will probly not fit in a backpack. probly will need a duffelbag. jesus. This needs a built in handle to be anywhere close to practical. not unlike the gamecube.
Nintendo took a bashing for it's naming of the Wii U and "New" 3DS as being confusing, but no one is worse at naming consoles in confusing ways than Microsoft.
Second = Xbox 360
Third = Xbox One
Thirds revision = Xbox One X
Fourth = Xbox Series X
Who is naming these things?
As far as the look goes, this is the most PC-esque game console yet, IMO.
@sixrings lite is often used to denote that something is lacking something it normally has i.e. lite yogurt so the lite in Switch lite can be understood to mean it lacks the ability to connect to a TV. The DSi wasn't a new handheld but instead was an iteration of the then current line of DS handhelds, though I'll concede the I wasn't descriptive of the difference.
@ThanosReXXX Which would have been fine, had they shown it horizontal - I watched the entire awards show, it was not shown horizontal at any time during that show when it was revealed.
I typed "Xbox Series X" into google and looked at the images, I don't see even a single one where it's horizontal.
https://www.google.com/search?q=xbox+series+x&sxsrf=ACYBGNRkU5F7B6QEdxNAG7Tjrn1lXdYhlQ:1576272048202&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiEmYL8xrPmAhUS2FkKHd6KC_wQ_AUoA3oECAwQBQ&biw=1600&bih=795
Wouldn't it just have been better to make it horizontal and put the grating over the right side if that's the way they intend for peopel to use it, horizontal?
You can say a lot of thought went into the design but I think more effort goes into the explanation, trying to make sense of it and marketing it, than the actual design. They probably haven't forgotten their 50% failure rate w/ the Xbox360 and it's RROD, so heat dissipation comes first, everything else comes second.
https://consumerist.com/2009/08/17/xbox-360-failure-rate-is-542-percent-game-informer-finds/
@Octane This may be the first time Iβve ever seen a comment with a triple figure of likes and no dislikes on this site. Congrats
@sixrings and my statement was xbox one was collecting dust. I prefer to play on ps4 and not double dip on Xbox x.
If X series X plays games better than PS5, then Iβll play series X. I have no loyalty to any Company. Xbox 360 was my go to last generation.
@GrandScribe that's a pretty lame explanation to how lite is useful in the description. I'm sure there's got to be just as many people that buy a lite to find out that it can't be docked as there will be people who buy a xbox one x thinking they bought a series x. In afterwords such a minor number it won't matter.
@sixrings its not like Nintendo named the Switch Lite the Switch S which wouldn't convey any useful information about the differences between the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch S only that there is a difference. The common understanding of what lite means is something that is similar to something else except for the absence to a degree or in totality of some quality. Given what I just said its far more likely people confuse an X series Xbox with an Xbox X.
Nah, it looks more like a trash can. The GameCube had character, this doesn't.
@Hck Don't forget the Sharp X67000.
@ancientlii Xbox Monolith sounds freaking awesome actually.
@Octane attach a TV screen to the front of that and take my money lol
@Octane lol theres even one that compares this new xbox to a trash can.
@rjejr Here you go, from the horse's mouth:
https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2019/12/12/21019925/xbox-series-x-microsoft-horizontal-orientation-tv-space-vertical-design
And here's another link with a healthy dose of some more useful info, and an interesting viewpoint from the article writer:
https://www.theverge.com/2019/12/13/21020046/microsoft-xbox-one-series-x-bad-name-great-design
It does kinda look like Sharon Apple. If it sings information high, Iβm taking a crowbar to it.
@GrandScribe so you're making the assumption that Microsoft will do a poor job conveying the message how series x differs from xbox one x. It's pretty clear. Series X is capable of up to 8k, 120fps, Ray tracing and SSD. Xbox one x is up to 4k 60fps. Microsoft isn't cheap and they have no problem paying for ads. I'll wager they will figure it out how to communicate what series x is.
My goodness I just wrote 8k 120fps and SSD and people here don't see how for some people that will be an instant buy. It's no different than some people upgrading there phone every year. Just because the Nintendo crowd likes games which look "good enough" doesn't mean there isn't a huge blue ocean of people who just buy based on tech. Meanwhile we are lucky to get a 1080p 60fps game.
Not gonna lie, I'm thinking I might get this over a PS5 as a secondary console simply from a technical standpoint because MS has that on lock.
Also: This doesn't look like a GameCube.... everything doesn't have to be about Nintendo, folks.
@sixrings ummm what? Did you use a wormhole to go from point A to point B?
By the looks of the design it looks like it will have very efficient cooling. Microsoft will never scrimp on the engineering of thermals again..... Iβd would buy this but with MS releasing exclusives on PC I canβt see this replacing that. Thereβs no way it will beat a 2080 ti.
@Octane lol these names are so confusing. I dodged a bullet cancelling Xbox 360 4 gigs that can't even download one game. GameCube get longer is a fun meme I admit. But yeah they didn't name this well.
@ThanosReXXX I didn't say I didn't believe you or I hadn't read it, just that they weren't showing it that way, which they aren't.
GameCube has a handle, do you remember Nintendo having a lot of ads showing people carrying it around? Don't think I've ever seen a photo of a hand it that handle and thats been around for 20 years.
Don't bother looking, I'm sure you'd manage to find one, just that I haven't seen it. Like I still haven't seen XSX on its side.
It looks like one of Valve's left over Steam Machine but taller.
@BlueKnight07 Microsoft already said it'll have an SSD...
@sixrings it's not doing 8k. Ever. Will be 4k resolution with 8k upscaling.
To be honest, at first glance of the top... I thought it was a portable BBQ grill from Japan.
It's just a PC gaming box for playing PC games, it isn't a console anymore even in the form factor and it will not have any exclusive games as stated before by Microsoft. Meh, this is the route they choose from now on. Rip Xbox.
The names are building up to... XXXBOXXX
Followed by ... X ... Or BOX.
Reminds me of the old StarBox for those that remember that...
I almost feel sorry for MS. They release early, and Sony says "PS5 will be twice as powerful and will be out in 6 months...".
They release late, and give Sony a 10m head start ... Followed by a 10m advantage in Japan.
Unless Sony really stuff up, there isn't much MS can do ... The consoles are effectively PCs anyway, and no one really wants Windows on their Xbox ... Because then it's not a console.
@JuiceMan_V what do you mean MS have this on lock from a technical standpoint?
Specs of this or PS5 have not been released and anyway arenβt games more important than specs? Sony always deliver with games but you canβt say the same for MS this gen...
'As if the Gamecube grew up' really irks me.
@codyf are you sure? What about monopoly, chess, pool, random indie game. Yes I don't believe forza, halo, gears, FIFA will ever run 8k but if they are saying it there must be a handful of games which can. Kind of like how a handful of Switch games run at 1080p 60fps.
@datamonkey maybe but xbox one x was the most powerful way to play third party games and speaking for myself I prefer multiple forza motorsports and horizons in comparison to one grand turismo.
@edhe should have done it on Kid from Kid n Play! π
Really have no opinion on the design, although it's nice that it's different inside of a big rectangle block. Not sure about fitting it into a shelving unit though.
The name on the other hand - why are they so bad at naming these? If having an Xbox One as the 3rd console wasn't confusing enough, they've gone and named this similar to the revised Xbox One X. It's like they can't think of anything else catchy so just stick an X in the name because X's are cool and techie sounding.
It's about the games, since between PS and XB the specs are usually fairly compatible β and PS has always had the more interesting IPs imo. But not as interesting as Switch IPs.
Its not a console, it's a high-end pc so who cares
@USWITCH64 I can use excel and word. My wife will be super happy.
@rjejr Well, my bad, then. I kinda read a question/request in your comment, so it was an attempt to provide you with some info that you might appreciate...
As for GameCube: I actually have seen photos of people carrying GameCubes and also photos of hands on handles in official campaigns. Maybe that was a European only thing? I've no idea, honestly.
But if it bothers you that much that I use links or pictures to support my claims and statements, then I'll forego doing that in relation to hands on GameCube handles...
@CodyMKW I kinda think it's about power. That's why so many Nintendo people left their 3DS is the drawer after the Switch came out. Hard to go back to SD when you get used to HD.
Tall GameCube sounds like something you order at StarBucks.
This is a weird design, but maybe it NEEDS to be a weird design, to catch people's attention again. At least it's a box. The first 360 looked like the plastic wrapped child of a chrome bumper and an Alto vase.
Did MS not think about the Wii U? Why would any company want to even try and make that mistake?
With PS itβs clear that each new iteration is a new console. X Series? What even is that?
I think Sony will destroy MS again in the next generation. I think X box will remain second best.
@jarvismp unlike the Wii u I'm sure Microsoft will market their hardware.
@Baker1000 exactly! I mean why not got for Xbox Z? At least itβs easily differentiated from all the other Xboxβs.
They just have gone the route of making it a pc tower, probably to reflect the high end gaming it will be capable of. Some people are being dramatic about the size, it seems a bit smaller then a typical pc tower unit.
They want to have it as a PC so have made it look like one. Maybe they will juts go for interchangeable drives so they just update when they needs to
@sixrings yup. 8K is a long ways away from now.
@codyf that doesn't make sense. If they have big first party games running at 4k 60fps. With a system twice as powerful (12tf) I'm sure they can have smaller games run at 8k like chess, pool, board games.
Decent design, dreadful name. No excitement for next gen here though. Iβll wait a couple of years for them to build a decent library or, more and more likely, go PC. That and Switch seems more and more the perfect combo.
No idea why people would rather build a pc. Are you going to use excel and word or something. Just seems so complicated and have come to realize I almost never use my pc when I have a phone and a tablet.
They already letting me "pre-order" Ori and Gears tactic on PC Game Pass (and place it in my library)
If Halo Infinite coming to PC so will Hell Blade 2. I can probably pay 4+ years worth of PC Game Pass with what an X series will cost.
@sixrings dude games like that are not typical use case scenarios. Also teraflops are a poor metric to measure computing power. My PC's gpu has the computing power of 12tflops and is not doing 8k. They can say "supports 8k" because the new consoles will be HDMI 2.1 complaint because of higher supported resolutions and implementation of freesync.
@codyf well then Nintendo shouldn't say it can run games at 1080p 60fps because it isn't typical use scenario. But it does say it because it can do some games at that resolution. I just got off my YouTube watching a pc run F1 2018 in 8k 10 months ago. That's a decent quality game but it is possible. It might not be many games but it can happen
@sixrings switch can run games at 1080p 60 though. Not all of them. Also the series x isnt claiming it can play games at 8k but it is claiming it'll Target 4k60.at the end of the day it's up to the Dev and wether or not the game they are making should favor frame rate or resolution. Yes 8k games are possible, but did you care to see the specs? It's two rtx Titan cards in an sli configuration. That's not even close to a consumer friendly price so GTFO of here with that comparison. Apples and oranges. Racing games are omptimised very well for the most part so your not making your argument anymore valid by using this single test case scenario. I would love to see older games running in 8k but newer AAA games are just not possible at a consumer friendly price tag. I also cant see your original argument of indie, board, and chess games really going for an 8k output just because if the game doesn't require that kind of res why would they do the work to make that happen?
@sixrings uhh yeah. Gamers In the professional field. Spreadsheets, video editing, programming. Haven't been chasing that 4k dragon because I already caught it. Lol
@BlueKnight07 i'm sure neither console will be locked to one speed.
I thought Gamers where supposed to be smarter. Most of these comments are beyond dumb.
If you are confused by console names, maybe you got bigger problems.
@danemord It goes sideways
@datamonkey or Xbox 2
@sixrings anyone who buys a console for 3rd party games is doing it wrong. Gaming consoles are for exclusives and Xbox hasn't had one since 2015. There's no reason to get one and even the Series X won't have any.
@Nintyfan if it was only about exclusives Nintendo would win every generation. Meanwhile they got beat with 64, GameCube, Wii u. And when they got beat they got beat so bad people wondered if they'd go third party. Exclusives aren't everything.
It doesn't even have a handle
They used Alan Watts in their reveal trailer. I'm sold already, though I see the irony in his words, usually with overtones of "anti-materialism" and "living in the now," being used to sell that very same materialistic stuff he was warning us against.
Doesn't look like a Gamecube to me.
