Super Mario Odyssey is one of the Switch's finest looking games (and finest games full stop, we might add), but strip away all of its shiny HD polish and you can end up with a version that looks like it would have been right at home on the Nintendo 64.
Modder Kaze Emanuar, known for tinkering around with that console's classic 3D Mario, Super Mario 64, is back once again. This time, he's released a new mod which is essentially a Mario 64-style demake of Super Mario Odyssey, complete with 80 Moons to collect across a number of worlds.
As you can see in the homemade trailer above, plenty of locations from Odyssey have been remade within Mario 64's iconic style, and you can even use Cappy to capture enemies just like the real thing. He's actually posted a playthrough of his creation to YouTube, too, which you can view for yourself below if you're interested.
Earlier this year, Emanuar shared a similar project for Super Mario Sunshine, as well as a Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie mash-up.
Thanks to CM30 for the tip!

Dang I really could go for a game of Odyssey now, but I lend the game to my little brother.
The music, the gameplay... truly one of the best games I have ever played.
It would've had very loose controls, lemme tell you that.
I like this nostalgic look!
FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY NL STOP DRAWING ATTENTION TO THESE PROJECTS.
Do you WANT them to get a DMCA?
@Noid
Nintendo have gone after Kaze Emanuar before, and a project like this would definitely get Nintendo's attention.
He actually makes these mods for a living and takes commissions for small mod projects through his Patreon.
Edit: Or at least he used to, it might be that he stopped that due to Nintendo intervening as his Patreon now describes making YouTube content instead.
It looks too good to be a N64 game. Quite nice, but not perfect.
I must have been one of the only people on the planet that didnt like Odyssey. I even got it a second time because i thought i must have been wrong the first time round but nope.
Mmm-mmm, DMCA! Filler text to pass word count
@Kidfunkadelic83
So you didn't like playing Mario dress up with all the crazy outfits you can wear, the gorgeous graphics or the Mario 64 inspired style? Not even the pipes that made mario go all retro and 2-D or Jump up superstar? Yikes what kinda Mario game do you like?
Personally i kinda lean more towards Galaxy but i ain't gonna lie. Loved Odyssey!
I don't see a curtain of distance fog, draw in, or three or four extremely blurry textures stretched over everything, all the color of poo. No, sorry, nice try.
@AirElephant
Dude, this is running on N64 hardware, or at least within an emulator.
There were breakthroughs in SM64 modding a few years back that made it possible to load larger more detailed maps into memory, and I am fairly sure that these ROM hacks will run on real hardware.

Here's a large map like Delfino Isle running on SM64.
@RupeeClock It's been confirmed that this particular mod doesn't currently work on original N64 hardware. Hopefully, it gets optimised for console one day, like Star Road was!
@MegaWatts
Ah, that's fair.
I guess that N64 emulation hasn't progressed far enough yet that it aims for true hardware accuracy, but instead serves as a playground for "enhancing the system", much like ZSNES used to and there are many SNES ROM hacks that will not work on real hardware due to being developed with ZSNES in-mind.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I liked odyssey but not the the extent of loving both galaxys , 64 and 3D world. It’s something about the inconsistency of the worlds, some are amazing and some are average. Seeing Mario with humans just seemed weird to me. Some moons were fun to get and some were boring like walking in a circle. There is overall more game here than other Marios but seems to be filled with filler. I liked the costumes tho. On the whole I did like it, but just seemed to be a game where everything is thrown at it. Whereas for me say galaxy 2 they chiselled away anything unnessacery and left the fun! X x x x x x
Almost sexual isn't it Smithers?
@BrintaPap yes it’s amazing
controversial opinion but I believe the galaxy games are far better than odyssey....
@gizmo998 I agree to some extent. IMO Galaxy games are better but not far better as you say. The galaxy games are filled with constant fun, new mechanics, theatre and surprises. I would actually put 3D world above Odyssey too. However I did love Odyssey too but it does get a bit grindy. I see 3D World and Odyssey as necessary steps so that now they can make SMG3! Which will be the ultimate 3D HD Mario to date.
@Zeldafan79 i abaolutely love mario 64. My all time favorite mario game. Also loved Galaxy 2.
I just didnt like the level designs. I dunno what it was about them but i just cant put my finger on it. I just felt they were too big for what there was going on in them. Alot of filler so to speak but thats just my take on it. I did love the clothing tho.
I did say im probarbly the only person in the world not to have liked it lol
@Dragonslacker1 Yes, that’s exactly how I feel about Odyssey too, It had the potential to be great but for the reasons you mentioned it didn’t quite make it and Galaxy 2 takes the crown
@Dragonslacker1
Galaxy 2 is one of the reasons i wouldn't mind seeing an Odyssey 2. The idea of taking the formula and refining it resulting in a game which feels tighter in design.
its one of the reasons im very interested in how BOTW2 turns out
"I'm flipping my $#17,
you're gonna believe
wheeeeen we send our C&D!
C&D, you'll see,
C&D, you'll see,
C&D, you'll see,
C&D, you'll see,
you'll ceeeease 'n' desist!"
Admit it, guys, we all know
you sang itthat if emulating a N64 wasn't as hard as - say - modding and emulating Sunshine or Galaxy, then Nintendo would have way less of a problem. Anyone can install [REDACTED] on a PC and emulate Super Mario 64 these days.Looks more like the dreamcast
Kaze is a madman
@MegaWatts yeah I tried playing it on a wii n64 emulator and it was running really slow so that was a shame
Original Odyssey should have a build option that let's you switch the Switch graphics to N64.
The N64 visuals still look fantastic, timeless in my opinion. Certainly hasn't aged as badly as the titles that go for realism obviously.
got that badboy patched onto my rom for safekeeping, and just incase it somehow gets taken off.
This looks kind of cool. But watching the video is enough, I don't need it in my life; gameplay looks the same but clunkier :/
His 60fps 16:9 mod of Mario 64 is excellent, makes the game feel miles better. He fixed almost all of the game logic inconsistencies that occurred as a result of doubling the frame rate. I’m not sure that it works on original hardware but I did manage to inject the patched version into the Wii U VC release, it works perfectly on Wii U.
I think it would look a bit more blockier but it is still pretty good.
@Noid Can you get DMCA over a patch? It's not a fan game and not a ROM.
only an upgraded N64 with 2 expansion packs to give this quality of graphics. Nice try to memik N64 games, but go replay. Those aren't this sharp. With that said.. still great work
@Audiogore0733 and bigger pixels on everything. It's too sharp/defined for a N64 game
Very impressive- from the blocky 64 graphics, choppy movements and laggy camera, to the midi soundtrack- this is nostalgia tripping done right.
@JoyousUser what on earth are you on about?
now we need to see what Super Mario 64 would look like if it were released on the Nintendo Switch with upgraded graphics.
This video made me laugh, it's genius.
@beazlen1 Yeah, Odyssey is definitely far too grindy for me. Couldn't quite figure out how to describe it before but grindy is the word I'm looking for. I'd put 3D World and the Galaxy games (and even Sunshine) above Odyssey too.
"and finest games full stop, we might add".
In my book it's the most disappointing 3D Mario game, honestly.
Kaze Emanuar does a lot of great stuff though.
The polygons would’ve looked even worse than that.
@TheAwesomeBowser This is the correct response. I LOVED 64... but the subsequent tightening of 3D Mario controls makes the original nearly unplayable for me, unfortunately.
To me Mario Odyssey is the only sequel to Mario 64 that felt like a proper sequel. It managed to capture what I loved about that game, Sunshine as well as the Galaxy and the 3D games never really did it for me.
@Kidfunkadelic83 there are a lot of youtube game design videos that agree with you, as do I
That's pretty cool.
