Update (Tue 14th Jul, 2020 13:10 BST): It's official! Nintendo has confirmed that the LEGO NES console is indeed the real deal. It will launch on 1st August priced at £209.99 / $229.99, and will remain exclusive to LEGO Retail stores for the remainder of the year. From 2021, it will also be available at other leading retailers.
The brick-built NES is packed with realistic details, including an opening slot for the Game Pak with a locking function and a controller with a connecting cable and plug. The console comes with a buildable retro TV, featuring a flat 8-bit Mario figure on the scrolling screen, plus an action brick to scan with LEGO Mario (figure not included; find in the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course set – 71360) so he reacts to the on-screen enemies, obstacles and power-ups just like in the Super Mario Bros. game.
Original Article: According to a new report which has surfaced online today, Nintendo is set to release a LEGO version of its classic NES console next month.
A series of images have been shared by Chinese site VJgamer, which claims that the upcoming product includes 1:1 brick replicas of the NES itself, the controller, a cartridge, and even a TV which shows Super Mario Bros. on screen (thanks, VGC).
It's said that owners will be able to open the NES' front cover and insert the LEGO cartridge, and that the TV features a crank which can make Mario move from one side of the screen to the other. German publication PromoBricks says that the set will launch for €229 on 1st August.
Earlier today, LEGO also shared the following tease to its official Twitter account. Is an official announcement on the way?
The already-announced LEGO Mario sets have already been confirmed to be launching on 1st August. According to this new report, the Mario figure will work with this new NES set, plugging into the top of the TV and making sounds.
Would you like to get your hands on one of these? We'll make sure to update this article if Nintendo or LEGO officially announces the new product.

Woof.
I prefer Nintendo re-release the real NES instead.
Expensive AF but looks so awesome.
That's cool and all, but you could buy a Switch Lite and Mario Odyssey for about the same price...
Give it a week, someone will get DOOM running on it
How did they know I wanted this when not even I knew I wanted this?
Make it a LEGO set but also an actual working console and I'm sold.
Great, really.
Now about those 'videogames'....
Thought it was gonna be a Lego thing that played NES games like the Classic...oh well
That's cool and all, but when are we getting Lego N64?
Very cool indeed.
So, they are selling a replica of a retro console, that doesn't work, for more price than a current gen console.
I mean, at least the Atari VCS kinda works.
I guess Nintendo and LEGO are serious about making the most of their new partnership. :x
That is really cool, and really expensive
Oh no, I'm going to have to buy this aren't I? No one tell my wife.
Waste of plastic
While cool, what would be way more cool is knowing what is coming to Switch after July.
Looking at the photos I reckon the screen rotates so that the level moves right to left with Mario staying roughly where he is. That is really cool indeed.
@Don https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Misc-/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Nintendo-Entertainment-System/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Nintendo-Entertainment-System-1124287.html
@AlexOlney this isn't Scruff 🤣
Sounds like one of those things that you'll never actually see in stores because people will buy all of the stock and resell them on eBay for exorbitant prices. But, the set looks awesome. If money was no object, I'd definitely get one of these.
Watch for the article where someone has built a working Lego NES.
@AlexOlney Now if you could just publish a link as to where you can actually buy one...
@71nk0
I buy Lego for the building experience and for the final product to look cool and interesting to me. I have absolutely no desire to play games on a Lego NES.
We really need to Lego of this obsession with retro consoles.
The best of both worlds 😮
As much as I like the NES and LEGO ,I will have to pass on this ..I refuse to pay that kind of money for a non-working replica of a 35 year old machine ..At least the NES Classic Edition works ..
I find this set more appealing than that other Mario set, honestly. But I'd never be able to justify the $250 price tag.
Completed it, mate!
Seriously though, I REALLY want this!
@SlayerG actually, because of switch shortage a switch lite and SMO could be up to 300$ 😲
@71nk0 yeah, but it's about the model, and the building of it. That's like saying model companies sell replicas of planes for more price than an RC one, then citing the fact that you can buy a plane that barely works and is overpriced, but is at least a real plane. Also, by current gen console what do you mean? Switch Lite? Because everything else on the market costs >$250
@RazumikhinPG I was thinking something similar
I actually stopped collecting lego due to space issues and rather using that space for game collecting but I’m def gonna order this.
Tho that’ll probably mean I won’t be buying the UCS republic gunship next year from lego star wars attack of the clones.
I just realized, this set is 18+. The highest rating I saw for a Lego set until now was 16+. 😯
@MrBlacky @HarryHyruleHero I get that, I was a LEGO fan in my childhood.
The Mario kits look really fun, but I just don't see the fun in building a LEGO NES, It's just a big gray box.
This looks good. I can see this selling well.
Well this is what I imagined when Lego Mario was announced. Expensive af but very cool.
@nessisonett Oh yeah. It'll be "expensive af", haha
$250 is quite expensive but man this looks good
@Rika_Yoshitake What?? I’m a 30 something year old men children... and I think it looks fantastic... amazing even.... why the hate?!
@Lapses I’ll heart that comment even if no one else will. Great punning although I will never Lego of my obsession with retro consoles.
Not a huge Lego guy, but I may buy this.
For $250, I want to be able to insert an actual Pac-Man cartridge and play it.
I'll be the forty year old man child. I just don't know what happened to actual games. So we're getting Lego, a theme park, and no news of games. That's great.
This looks fantastic. Especially for an 18+ set, meaning quite difficult to build. But that price... yeah..
@Rika_Yoshitake Why are you so negative?
It would have been so cool if it had NES internals and could play actual NES carts. I would actually buy that, and it would have somewhat justified the high price.
@DarthNocturnal 2646 pieces / 250 dollar = 10 cent per piece. In Lego terms, that's not remotely expensive. However 250 is still a lot of money. And I guess they could've cut it by 100 dollar if they left out the TV.
@Rika_Yoshitake 30 year olds are too young for NES. 40 year olds are who this targets.
What a ripoff. But im sure there will be more people pleased than unimpressed, due to the ever-strong brand loyalty.
Nintendo could sell you an empty box and people would buy it if it's flashy enough.
That's way more than I'm willing to spend...maybe if it's a treat to myself for both xmas and my birthday.
Very cool to look at.
But I'd prefer a full-size NES replica with HD out
Didn't see this coming. Kinda cool but not for me. Hope the direct rumours are true and finally know the games for the rest of the year.
You can buy a functional NES with that kinda money. This is cool as heck, but that price tag is terrifying.
It's a cool idea, but the price... @_@
what a waste of money, nice to look at one then that's it
@FTL I think it was a joke regarding youtubers who complain about everything just because it gets them more views. I don’t think you’re like that though!
@Rika_Yoshitake yeah well lately it's people like you who are more annoying - complaining before anyone is actually complaining - the "voice of reason" complainer.
@sanderev Yeah, I expected this to be €300 at least. So it's actually quite reasonable priced compared to standard LEGO sets.
I dont see why anyone would ever buy this. All the mario lego announcements seem incredibly not interesting. This will probably sell a few thousand copies to nintendo enthusiasts with money who want to add it to their nintendo memorabilia shelf. You cant actually play with it, either as a video game or a lego set. Its just a lego model you build once and set aside...for as much as you could buy a Switch Lite and game for.
They LEGO bricks cost about ten cents per brick, so price wise this is not that bad. I’m not getting it, but if your a collector this is worth it.
@Octane I think if I size it correctly, it's comparable to the Disney castle... which is a € 350 set.
Warning: Any attempts to modifying the console can brick the system.
@Slownenberg True, this doesn't have a lot of gameplay. However it's an 18+ set. Meaning it's more of a model than a play set. Also it's on a 1:1 scale, this will sell really well.
@Elvie yep comment of the century! Sheer brilliance
Remember how Nintendo made a whole bunch of amiibos to distract us from a lack of games. This doesn't feel at all like that.
@sixrings This isn't made by Nintendo.
Don't kid yourselves, you know this'll sell well.
This is cool and all, but I'm better off saving a few Rupees at that price.
I saw this at a Lego convention a year ago from someone. Same crank idea too. $250 is a bit much for the lack of wow factor even at 10 cents per piece price ratio.
@Don NES mini?
@sanderev that may be true but suddenly Nintendo is willing to license out their IPs to companies like Lego all at a time where I don't hear much game announcements. Go be clear, I dont believe making little plastic amiibo took so much time from Nintendo that they could not make many games. Rather the plastic toys like these plastic toys were made to distract gamers from the fact there aren't many games.
You could get an actual console with NESRGB installed for that price, it does look cool though
It looks amazing, but really? That price?
@MrBlacky some of the new LEGO art sets are 18+ I believe 😳 there are a couple others released recently that I can’t remember though 😂
Meanwhile in the Nintendo board room.....
"Hmm, what fans want....Mother 3. Information on Metroid Prime 4. A new 2D Metroid. Info on Baynetta 3, BOTW2. Maybe a new Mario Kart. Splatoon 3. More ARMS. A new 3D Mario. Sunshine port. GCN and N64 on VC. Whatever Monolith is working on next. Folders. What should we announce for this holiday?"
"OH! I know! What if we build an NES entirely out of Legos?"
"THAT'S BRILLIANT!!! That's what we'll do!"
[laughs]
@NEStalgia based on this thread that logic has worked. You're one of the few people saying BUT WHERE ARE THE GAMES.
@sanderev not at $250. Maybe if it was like $80 that'd be a cool addition to a collector shelf. At the cost of an actual video game system I imagine the sales will be extremely limited. Ask any gamer what they would rather have, a new system or 5 brand new games, or a lego set...for all but the most extreme collectors this product is gonna be a big head scratch as to why it exists.
@fR0z3nS0u1 TBH all you would probably have to do is take the board out of the NES classic, put it in the lego NES, modify the build a bit, and then it would probably work.
Folders on Switch: can't be done.
Lego NES: EASY!
@Grumblevolcano @HappyMaskedGuy
LEGO probably knows about as much as us when it comes to Nintendo's upcoming game lineup.
I’m down for this day one. I usually don’t mind dropping on a expensive lego set here and there if it seems like one that will hold its value and I see this being sought after it’s retired. Granted I will rage if they pop out a deluxe model next year for $400 with ROB and light gun.
@Rika_Yoshitake
And I can't wait for other men children to complain about the complainers.
I think this is a great idea for those who can afford it and those who want it. The price is super expensive, but many will fork over the dough anyways.
For those complaining about the games, this has nothing to do with games being delayed and is an entire different division. This coming out has no effect on games being delayed or not either..,.you can still market your company outside its main line of business and still have your operations work normally. Why new games haven't been announced is something I don't understand, but that has NOTHING do to with this release.
Lego have lost their mind. This could have easily been made at any time in Legos history and been just about as functional as it's going to be. And the fact that all this cash still doesn't have a tv capable of making noise itself is the kicker. Plugging a toy into the top to make noise since it's the only thing with a speaker, it really is the 80s
What a great time for being rich AF. I still want the Zelda Minifigurines set, my money is sitting there not being wasted.
Cool but does it run BOTW?
Take my money now!!
@sleepinglion In other words, an excuse for Nintendo to collaborate with companies to make Multi-Carts for NES systems that would render the prices for the original games useless, because the Compilation Games would be cheaper. Take the Disney Afternoon Collection for instance, 6 Games on a Cartridge would save you a ton of money.
@MrBlacky it doesn't play games, *****
This looks awful, it can’t even run SMB. Look at those images, way too blocky and choppy. What’s the frame rate, six studs? I’ll hold off for the SNES, NES games haven’t aged well.
If it was a actual console with the shell made by LEGO, I'd buy... But not this way. Why not a proper LEGO game with Nintendo IP? Lego Mario, Lego Zelda, Lego Donkey Kong... Lego Nintendo World... I don't know. Or (it's complicated, I know) a DLC changing all the textures to Lago style for a proper game (Mario Odyssey? Breath of the Wild?)
But can it play Crysis?
the virgin LEGO vs the chad LABO
Pretty cool, if a bit pricey. Though many of Lego's more ambious sets are pretty pricey.
And yeah, Lego is making this, this has nothing to do with the Switch 's future game library. Don't know why people even brought that up. 😂
@Yenkman lol, they already have made NES Lego cases For raspberri PI's that can play every single game through emulators for a faction of the price, this set is ridiculous =XD
@ beazlen1: "yep comment of the century! Sheer brilliance".
I not sure if he is being sarcastic or not.
Amazing! But so expensive, as usual...
@Retrogamindaddy
Where did I say, it does play games? 🙄
And PLEASE, PLEASE tell me, what **** stands for. I am waiting...
@StevenG the hell are you even talking about? I’m 33 and I grew up with the NES
I hope this plays mega drive games. Day 1
For that price it should be able to play NES games, so ridiculous the price of legos lol
@Slownenberg 80 dollar for 2600+ pieces? Nah that's never going to happen. This set clearly also has some really unique custom molds, making it even worth more. And remember, it's 1:1 scale.
This would be a 200 dollar set at minimum. So then add 50 dollar for license and profit. The 250 dollar price is not unreasonable, it's expensive. But not too expensive for what you get.
Costs so much I thought it was an NES classic that came with a fake cart and tv, but a controller and system w/ studs on there. A pro controller w/ studs to build the grips would be cool.
Wow, does it also come with need to blow into the games to get it working?
Always down for some more Lego in my life. It can join the myriad of buckets that keep my house from blowing away.
For that price? No thanks.
@YoshiAngemon My thoughts are that any legacy gaming console with such a huge worldwide appeal should be re-released to give it the ability to work with modern TVs. With so many old NES carts already out in the wild, it would sell, though my AVS is enough for me
Nintendo could sell you an empty box and people would buy it if it's flashy enough.
@diablo2 They do indeed. You probably knew that, though.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/01/random_nintendos_selling_empty_boxes_of_the_animal_crossing_edition_switch
This is bloody absurd, of course.
Maybe if it was like $80 that'd be a cool addition to a collector shelf. Ask any gamer what they would rather have, a new system or 5 brand new games, or a lego set...for all but the most extreme collectors this product is gonna be a big head scratch as to why it exists.
@Slownenberg Perhaps that is the point. Nintendo was a toy company before they dabbled in electronics, and I do not think the people in Kyoto ever forget that. I'm fairly sure this is not actually intended for you and I - rather, it is an attempt to propogate Nintendo IP to a different crowd. Anything to have people associate the company with the warm fuzzies...
@Rika_Yoshitake 50 year old more likely 😂
People who buy that crap get what they deserve on top of encouraging increasing bad practices from Nintendo. What a joke... On par with Atari ‘s bs.
It's kinda funny how many Nintendo fans were begging for a Lego partnership a year ago without seemingly realizing that Lego sets are expensive.
@darkswabber Choose the Republic
@HarryHyruleHero good soldiers follow orders!
This is cool, but stupid money. But I would happily pay 250 for a brand new updated NES.
My money. Take it now.
@fafonio The SNES came out in 1990 when you would have been the right age to play such games.
Far more 40+ year olds grew up with the NES than people your age.
I totally misread this article. I thought it was an actual working Lego NES ! It’s not
@Slownenberg
"Ask any gamer what they would rather have, a new system or 5 brand new games, or a lego set"
Pfft easy, a LEGO set. Those five new games will come down in price eventually.
announce a Nintendo Lego game already. Would a game with dozens of playable characters across various Nintendo worlds built from Lego. Or at the very least just do a Lego Mario game.
for $250, I want to see how that mario moves on the tv (when the crank turns).
@lemonjellydude For $250 I knew that was the price for a limited themed lego set. So, to add a working console function.. they'd definitely charge more
I've been looking to get a Lego set just for myself to out together. This would have been cool. But that price is a no go for me personally.
@WoomyNNYes it's in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRrVwfp0CXg
Couldn't we just get a Lego Mario game instead?
Its ridiculous how bad I want this and how little of a reason for it lol! Hope they do Zelda next!!
@HollowSpectre Why would you want a Lego Mario game?
@redd214 Wait for next year, then it's Zelda's anniversary.
@MrBlacky
Lego are repositioning a lot of their sets so it is clear when a set is aimed at adults rather than kids. Is pretty much a rebranding of the Creator Expert sets (which were 16+)
It started with the Star Wars helmets and Haunted House.
@sanderev Ive been waiting for a Zelda Lego set for 30 years already another wouldnt kill me lol
@sanderev No interest in collectables so a travellers tales made Lego game would be perfect for me. And the amount of unused and obscure characters they could mess about with would be fun. Not to mention my wallet would be happier.
@Rika_Yoshitake - Because real children have totally been asking for Lego to make a set based off the NES, which every child of today has played, right?
Looks stupid. Everything they’ve done with Nintendo has been ugly.
I wish they’d just release the cartridges... that at least looks decent...
@HollowSpectre Why would Lego need to make such a game? Nintendo could do that themselves. It's like asking Nintendo to make lego sets based on other lego sets. It'd be weird.
Can't wait to see the first YouTube modders turning this in to an ACTUALLY working console...
I want it, and a Lego SNES and Gameboy
This is very stupid. I love it.
Nintendo is so ***** creative!
That is pretty cool lol. I'd love to see someone also make it a functional NES. Someone's got to.
This looks way 2 cool
@Kirby_Girl remember the guy that made a set of potatoes work as smash controllers? And the other guy that reacquisitioned a snes to be a switch dock? Someone else is definitely going to make this a working device.
@FredTheCat
I already figured it out by myself. But thanks for your answer, nonetheless. 😄
@StevenG Maybe those in their really early 30s. I'm 37 (close to 40, I guess) and I would absolutely consider myself from the NES era. At the age of 4/5, it was my very first game console.
@Kirby_Girl Just take out the pcb and controller ports from the NES mini, then enclose those in the Lego NES. Then all you need is adding a HDMI input and LCD screen to the TV. It's perfectly doable.
Love Lego, Love Nintendo. Have zero interest in this - why? - because what it 'does' is a joke.
Still for a collector I can see the point. But for me it'd have to actually play games on it and be more than an ornament.
This looks so cool, but way too expensive for my budget. I mean it is 2646 pieces with some special bricks, so it's pretty par the course as LEGO goes.
That looks pretty cool.
<insert usual aghast comment about the price>
Very cool!
But so expensive.
Looks very cool.
Since it is 299.99 CAD + tax, I'll have to save some more twonies, loonies, quarters, dimes, and nickels. Oh my!
£209.99!?... Moving on.
Well this is very cool.
@brunojenso
What do you love about Lego? I mean, judging by your reasoning why this set "sucks", you can't possible have a single Lego set.
I think a lot of people need to calm down about this, and less whining!!
Lego has never been a company which makes consoles, so why would it make a working NES? This is a set designed for adults, which can be displayed (like many other sets)
Lego could easily have done a basic cheaper version with a couple of hundred bricks; however this will be a collector's item, over 2,000 pieces with a high level of detail which AFOLs will appreciate. Sets like this take a couple of years in development.
If you want a working NES go and buy a classic or an old one and old CRT TV!!
This site's users are clearly not the target audience for this set. The price is expensive for sure but absolutely worth it based on the build, detail, and price-to-part ratio.
This is probably collectible and if I bought it I wouldn't open it and I would probably sell it in 30 years, lol.
@fR0z3nS0u1 that’s what initially thought lol
@PrincessAzunyan - I mean, I actually ended up being that same kind of kid, bit that's besides the point. It'd be more realistic for MOST kids to ask for a Lego model of a Switch or something than an NES. No need to dunk on what you think other people want. For example, I still think this whole Lego Mario line would be better as a more traditional Lego theme, as watching this one guy who reviewed like...all the sets, and seeing him demonstrate how Lego intends for the set to be played, he's accidentally knocked down something in the set like every time he's demonstrated it. Like, come on, he wasn't being too hard on them, either. I know this NES thing doesn't DIRECTLY relate to that line, but I can definitely understand there gripes with how Lego decided to use their Mario license.
@MrBlacky Yeah your right - I'm being too clinical. I've owned an embarrassing amount of Lego in the past. Especially a lot of Star Wars models that I filled shelves with - but I've got rid of them all now and can't see me getting any more - even though I enjoy the actual building very much.
I guess I'm just not a collector anymore, so once it's built I've no further interest - but I'm sure it's perfect for many. I'm just not the target audience anymore. I hope it's for you.
@Rika_Yoshitake They already are.
Some people in these comments and on other sites appear to have literally no idea how much licensed Lego sets actually cost. This is on the cheap end, try some of the Star Wars stuff, for example.
Also this is Lego, it's not a "Oh Nintendo made a lego so they aren't doing anything else", thing - it's a licensed set, obviously Nintendo are gonna push it, I mean, Duh.
But it is, Lego, and that's it - so why bring up the whole "Oh but the Joycons", it's not even relevant.
I think it's pretty cool, and fun too.
@FredTheCat Exactly
What is the framerate, tho?
the only part missing is that it is not a real playable system. but the detail that goes into building the Lego set makes it worth the purchase. (assuming that you are both a Nintendo fan and a Lego fan.)
the Lego TV just needs an accessory or two so that it can be used as an actual TV for your NES, Gameboy, or Nintendo Switch for those who want much more than a whined-up Super Mario 2D game. just imagine an attachable LED screen for the Lego TV to go from Lego Mario to 8-Bit Mario.
if the Lego NES that comes with the Lego TV just had one game (possibly more) and could actually attach to the Lego TV instead of just standing next to the Lego TV as it does now; this Lego Mario set may just sell-out before pre-orders begin.
For that price it should have an NES classic you can pop inside haha.
@StevenG well I was 5-6 when I started playing the NES .... if thats not "growing up" with something... then I don't know what it is.
Oooo I love this! How much? I'm sure I...
...
$230!!!
I will enjoy you from afar.
My body is ready. My wallet is ready.
@sanderev Oh wow! I wasn't expecting a scrolling lego screen. That's clever AF!
This is lovely!
That commercial didn’t feel very Nintendo to me. It instead felt like an ad from a faceless and soulless millenial-run startup company staffed and influenced mostly by people under 25 years old. The Nintendo magic just wasn’t there.
A portend of things to come?
This is a sad day.
@Rika_Yoshitake If this were reasonably-priced for plastic bricks, you'd have a point. As it stands, you're a tone-deaf shill.
There's more :
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/a02128a1-7ee7-4716-83b0-4ff1904d1216
And then this :
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/2db3a75b-7026-4a7a-ae1e-9d38435c58bd#&gid=1&pid=2
The real question is what is the price to part ratio? given this is a licenced set I would guess it's somewhere between 12-14 ct/pp.
I am really curious how they manage the scrolling screen and what techniques they use to pull it off.
Most reactions here are from people who have no real interest in Lego it seems.
Sadly I bought the Pirates of Baracuda bay recently and do not have the money for this set.
I always wanted a lego pirate ship since I was a kid so I had to get that set.
Behold, the 184th comment under this news article which nobody will read, is completely fatuous, generally pointless and most likely already expressed in one way or another several times over:
I don't get it.
I LOVED how the guy in the video blew in the cartridge! Especially as he's too young for those old day practices
Its a LEGO toy you wouldnt and couldnt want to actually play with. To be honest its kind of stupid.
Gotta admit, that is pretty dang cool.
Resellers are already getting themselves ready. I will have to pass given the cost. Make a smaller set that doesn't do as much and I'd think about it.
How cool is this! I am a Lego fan and a Nintendo fan so this is a must! I love the gimmick on the TV and very cool that the "system" actually opens up for game cartridges and the compatibility with the previous Lego Mario set is the icing on the cake. Overall, very well done!
Nintendo site is now retaking pre-orders
