Re: Random: Say Hello To The Wii SPii Portable, A GBA-Sized Console

rjc-32

@doctorhino I do this, I have everdrives and ODEs for all my old consoles but I’ll only play the roms I own, otherwise I’m not motivated to play anything as it’s too easy to get everything for free. I count virtual console games in this too though, the way I see it is I own the Rom so I’ll play it on the original console if I like.

Re: Nintendo eShop Growth Continues With Massive Increase To Digital Sales

rjc-32

@jamesRainbowBoy I’m pretty sure the digital prices are the same due to pressure from brick and mortar retailers. Retailers would refuse to stock the games or hardware and waste shelf space if digital prices were significantly less on release as very few would buy physical, resulting in less store footfall, less sales and wasted shelf space. This may not be an issue in future once digital accounts for a significant majority of sales, companies could ditch physical altogether and simply distribute their hardware online, but currently brick and mortar sales/marketing is necessary.

Re: Limited Run Reveals Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Vol.1 Physical Release, 10 Classics On One Switch Cartridge

I don’t like Limited Run Games much, their business model does nothing but inflate the prices of these games further down the line. It’s even worse now with today’s scalper culture, games get snapped up in seconds to be resold. With special editions (inclusive of lots of extras) I can understand very limited runs, but not standard cartridge releases. Why don’t they call themselves “indiePhys” or something and do longer print runs. I’d love a copy of the Turok games but I’m not paying £100 on eBay.

Re: Retro-Bit's Next Tribute64 Controller Offers Wireless N64 Play, And Pre-Orders Open Today

rjc-32

@BloodNinja Well I’m afraid I disagree, as would anyone who plays any N64 game that requires any kind of aiming. N64 games were programmed around that specific stick and don’t play as well with the modern sticks with twitchy potentiometers. Making the stick (and inner components) metal would not be moot as it would almost completely eliminate the stick wear. Sure, it would be expensive, but it would be a premium product if someone was willing to produce it, something I would definitely pay for (if availability could be guaranteed unlike the steelsticks).

Re: Xbox's Phil Spencer: 'I Could Have Never Designed The Wii... It Was Just Amazing To See'

The analog stick on the N64 controller is far more accurate than those on modern controllers. Try aiming in Zelda from the horse with both, you'll soon realise. It used optical sensors and worked similarly to how a mouse does, it's extremely precise. The main letdowns were the materials used to construct the stick, along with a lack of buttons on the left side of the controller. I wish modern controllers used steel versions of the N64 stick.

Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Hits Switch This July Alongside Themed Joy-Con

rjc-32

Skyward Sword is one of my favourite games of all time, the controls were such a huge part of the experience, once I got used to them I was hooked. Solid 40 hours spent with it when it released. The final boss battle was epic. The only thing that worries me about this remaster are the Joycon. They’re awful, tiny sticks and hard clicky buttons. I wish I could use my Wii remote plus and nunchuk with this but that won’t be happening. Hopefully they’ve fixed that save data bug too!

Re: Video: Here's How Mario Kart Could Look Running On A 4K Console

@doctorhino Try to scroll a website on an 80hz screen and read the text whilst it’s scrolling. Then do the same on a 165hz display, you’ll easily tell the difference as you’ll read it far easier. It’s smoother, motion is clearer, lag is massively reduced. Your eyes would adapt to the refresh if you used it regularly. The larger the screen the greater the benefit where high refresh is concerned.

Re: Guide: How To Spot Bootleg Nintendo Video Games

rjc-32

@thesilverbrick I’ve started to buy Japanese copies of expensive older games, then just run the English language ROM/ISO as I have ODEs or flash carts for older consoles. This way I have a legit copy for the collection but they mostly cost significantly less for Jap versions. I don’t like to just download without buying anything because there is no value, if I can just get all the games for free I have no motivation to play them. But doing it this way is a nice middle ground. As I live in the UK I do a similar thing for the PAL games I own, I’ll run the NTSC ROMS to bypass the awful 50hz.

Re: Video: Here's How Mario Kart Could Look Running On A 4K Console

rjc-32

@Shadowthrone Exactly this. Also pixel density and viewing distance play a large part. I can 100% tell a massive difference when sitting 5-6 ft from my 55 C9. I’m not saying lower resolutions look bad on it, far from it, but there is a huge difference. Further back it’s less pronounced, but aliasing in games is more noticeable when set to 1080p.

I also used to have a 32” 4K monitor which I changed out for a 32” 1440p for 165hz. Even at that small size I can tell the difference when reading text, although for gaming it’s tougher to see.

With today’s 77”+ displays even 8K will be more necessary in the future depending on how close you’ll be sitting.

Re: Random: No, This Isn't A New Colour Of Famicom - It's Just Really Dirty

The reason the consoles turn yellow like this is thanks to a fire retardant chemical that is used in the plastic. Over time the chemical oxidises, resulting in the yellowing. Nintendo obviously used different chemicals across different batches because some consoles will never yellow like this. You can notice this best example of this is the fact that on some cartridges half will be yellow and half grey.
