@doctorhino I do this, I have everdrives and ODEs for all my old consoles but I’ll only play the roms I own, otherwise I’m not motivated to play anything as it’s too easy to get everything for free. I count virtual console games in this too though, the way I see it is I own the Rom so I’ll play it on the original console if I like.
@Jimez Not possible, the original ROM file is not included with these decompilation projects. You have to provide the ROM yourself so Nintendo can do nothing about the rest of the code that provides the enhancements.
@jamesRainbowBoy I’m pretty sure the digital prices are the same due to pressure from brick and mortar retailers. Retailers would refuse to stock the games or hardware and waste shelf space if digital prices were significantly less on release as very few would buy physical, resulting in less store footfall, less sales and wasted shelf space. This may not be an issue in future once digital accounts for a significant majority of sales, companies could ditch physical altogether and simply distribute their hardware online, but currently brick and mortar sales/marketing is necessary.
Reasons like this are why I’ll hack consoles if possible. I can dump my games to disk storage so if the originals stop working it’s a non-issue. I still collect physical games but now they’re essentially like “trading cards”, they either stop working like this or they require multiple patches over time that render the included code obsolete.
I don’t like Limited Run Games much, their business model does nothing but inflate the prices of these games further down the line. It’s even worse now with today’s scalper culture, games get snapped up in seconds to be resold. With special editions (inclusive of lots of extras) I can understand very limited runs, but not standard cartridge releases. Why don’t they call themselves “indiePhys” or something and do longer print runs. I’d love a copy of the Turok games but I’m not paying £100 on eBay.
@BloodNinja Objectively speaking the original stick is the more accurate stick, but its great that you enjoy the more modern design. I, along with many others, prefer the original.
@BloodNinja Well I’m afraid I disagree, as would anyone who plays any N64 game that requires any kind of aiming. N64 games were programmed around that specific stick and don’t play as well with the modern sticks with twitchy potentiometers. Making the stick (and inner components) metal would not be moot as it would almost completely eliminate the stick wear. Sure, it would be expensive, but it would be a premium product if someone was willing to produce it, something I would definitely pay for (if availability could be guaranteed unlike the steelsticks).
I’d rather have the original analog stick than this. Why can’t a company create a premium replacement 64 controller with an updated original style stick that’s constructed using metal components? I’d pay good money for that.
That device is a rip off, should cost half the amount it does. It doesn’t even work with RGB modded systems and is limited to S Video. You’re better off buying the rad2x from retrogamingcables for less than half the cost, and it also supports RGB.
@RA1NMAKER That’s not possible, you can just initiate a return based on a defective or misrepresented item. The process is automatic, even the postage to return is free, a label is generated then tracked through eBay. Refunds are given automatically if the seller refuses to do so.
@Peach64 Well Nintendo are a business, their sole objective is to keep shareholders happy and make profit, anyone who believes otherwise is mistaken. It makes good sense from that perspective, a rush of sales in the one year of availability, then possible re-releases as individual digital titles.
The analog stick on the N64 controller is far more accurate than those on modern controllers. Try aiming in Zelda from the horse with both, you'll soon realise. It used optical sensors and worked similarly to how a mouse does, it's extremely precise. The main letdowns were the materials used to construct the stick, along with a lack of buttons on the left side of the controller. I wish modern controllers used steel versions of the N64 stick.
Recently picked up an RGB modded N64& OSSC, along with a load of classic carts including both Zelda games. Also got an everdrive so I’m playing Ocarina of Time Redux, a rom hack of ocarina that contains some improvements, including faster text and boots/ocarina assigned to dpad
There's no pleasing anyone here! It seems everyone wants a pokemon game with AI generated landscapes based on photogrammetry, Ray traced ambient occlusion and lighting, and nvidia hairworks-laden monsters.....
@Jackpaza0508 Sega patented the arrow pointer so Fox got into trouble for using that. That’s why you never see that kind of arrow in games anymore. To get around this developers use a minimap with route highlighted to guide you instead, which is better anyway.
Skyward Sword is one of my favourite games of all time, the controls were such a huge part of the experience, once I got used to them I was hooked. Solid 40 hours spent with it when it released. The final boss battle was epic. The only thing that worries me about this remaster are the Joycon. They’re awful, tiny sticks and hard clicky buttons. I wish I could use my Wii remote plus and nunchuk with this but that won’t be happening. Hopefully they’ve fixed that save data bug too!
@doctorhino Try to scroll a website on an 80hz screen and read the text whilst it’s scrolling. Then do the same on a 165hz display, you’ll easily tell the difference as you’ll read it far easier. It’s smoother, motion is clearer, lag is massively reduced. Your eyes would adapt to the refresh if you used it regularly. The larger the screen the greater the benefit where high refresh is concerned.
@Azuris Yeah that’s true, I paid £10 for thousand year door 2 years ago from Japan, now looking at least £50 shipped. Overall it’s good though, especially with RPGs
@thesilverbrick I’ve started to buy Japanese copies of expensive older games, then just run the English language ROM/ISO as I have ODEs or flash carts for older consoles. This way I have a legit copy for the collection but they mostly cost significantly less for Jap versions. I don’t like to just download without buying anything because there is no value, if I can just get all the games for free I have no motivation to play them. But doing it this way is a nice middle ground. As I live in the UK I do a similar thing for the PAL games I own, I’ll run the NTSC ROMS to bypass the awful 50hz.
@Shadowthrone Exactly this. Also pixel density and viewing distance play a large part. I can 100% tell a massive difference when sitting 5-6 ft from my 55 C9. I’m not saying lower resolutions look bad on it, far from it, but there is a huge difference. Further back it’s less pronounced, but aliasing in games is more noticeable when set to 1080p.
I also used to have a 32” 4K monitor which I changed out for a 32” 1440p for 165hz. Even at that small size I can tell the difference when reading text, although for gaming it’s tougher to see.
With today’s 77”+ displays even 8K will be more necessary in the future depending on how close you’ll be sitting.
The reason the consoles turn yellow like this is thanks to a fire retardant chemical that is used in the plastic. Over time the chemical oxidises, resulting in the yellowing. Nintendo obviously used different chemicals across different batches because some consoles will never yellow like this. You can notice this best example of this is the fact that on some cartridges half will be yellow and half grey.
I purchased the Mario Advance 3 game on Wii U VC. I ripped the rom file and injected it into a 3DS VC game, works great on the 3DS. This one would also work on a modded switch with an emulator
@Dezzy The switch CPU runs at the same 1.02GHz whether it’s docked or undocked, the GPU is what operates at variable frequencies depending on docked/undocked. They managed it fine with Odyssey.
Stupid that they cut bowsers fury to 30fps in portable. Just cut the resolution to compensate and keep it at 60. It’s a 6 inch screen so the resolution cut is barely noticeable.
It will be leaked online in the coming months, can be played using the Xenia emulator. Who cares about the licence holders, EON/MGM, the game will be leaked and there will be nothing they can do about it.
@redpanda0310 Possibly by analysing the game’s code that has been dumped. They could see a possibility from the code, then it’s just a case of figuring out how to realise the possibility in-game.
I'd rather fly over, unbox it and bring it back in my carry-on, then waltz through nothing to declare, would cost either the same or slightly more, and at least you'd get a trip out of it rather than paying the government
You know what this could mean? Generic character models in the base game, then DLC to unlock the full player model so they get their image right payment! Haha!
I’m sure glad we never had all these parental controls when I was young. My mum’s form of “control” was to take the RF cable from the NES when I was naughty. This worked until I got a SNES, when she took that cable I simply got the old one from the NES out the wardrobe to resume...
@Sissyrobyn996 The only two ways I can fix luigis mansion is to either use an 8bitdo pro and invert the sticks in the software, or use a cronusmax and set a custom profile to invert. Crazy.

I’ve not bought a single retail game digitally on switch. Prices are ridiculous on the eshop for first party, even with their sales.
