I highly recommend Opus: Rocket of Whispers for anyone who likes narrative-driven games. It's rather short, and the explore-and-collect mechanic could be tedious for some, but it really is a poignant and thoughtfully-crafted story. The sort of game you more "experience" than "play." I played it a while back, and it has stuck with me.
I probably would have waited, but this was a definite buy for me at some point. All this did was accelerate the clock.
That said, I do feel a little queasy about supporting Nintendo on yet another time-limited release. It was annoying with the "Classic" consoles. It is extremely frustrating with the physical for this. It is downright wrong for the digital release.
I went physical because a) I like the box art; and b) I have precious little space on my Micro SD card, even with archiving games as I beat them.
While cartridge art for Switch is not unimportant to me, it matters a lot less than the box art. It’s not like an SNES or Genesis game where the cartridge art is critically important because you look at it while you’re playing. Cart goes into the Switch and disappears.
That said, it really is ugly and I would have preferred any other region’s cartridge. Oh well, not a huge deal.
@BooJoh Fair enough and well said. I was coming at it from the review is of the games, but especially with a port (or, rather, emulation), the gameplay experience is really what is being reviewed.
(That said, I am a fan of preserving the original visuals, though the best option is the Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap approach of letting you instantly jump between both; probably would require too much power given that these are not Master System games, though.)
I understand being exacting in terms of what you look for in a port, and I suppose some new content + Galaxy 2 would have been nice, but “Three of the best Nintendo games ever, in one place” — especially when that place is the most convenient gaming console of all time and when such games enjoy several quality of life / performance bonuses — is a no-brainer 10/10 experience. Honestly, the only reason I could conceive of for giving it a 9/10 would be the inexcusable time-limited nature of even the digital release, as many commenters have noted. This might be even crazier than 7/10 for SM All-Stars.
@DAHstroy Sunshine is easily the most underrated 3D Mario title (probably most underrated period, though I see a lot of hating on Lost Levels and they are brutal platforming bliss) and is the one I am most excited to revisit of the (excellent) bunch in 3D All-Stars. Hope you enjoy it!
This really shifts Hyrule Warriors up my backlog — gotta play that before sinking into this over the holidays. Thanks for a great couple of weeks of announcements, Nintendo!!! (And NL for delivering the news.)
Still reeling from the 7/10 review for this. To each her or his own, but it surprised me to see anything less than a 9 for such an iconic piece of Nintendo history.
I think whether you prefer All-Stars versus NES versions is going to pretty closely correlate with whether you grew up in the 80s or the 90s (as someone who bridged the gap, I love them both).
I would never give the collection anything short of 10/10, though, so I guess my 90s' side wins out.
So sold on this game. Cannot wait to download it. It sounds like an utter joy. I liked Verge describing it as "Breath of the Wild meets Animal Crossing," too.
I know the article dealt with this in the preface, but it's sorta silly to count the PlayStation games as on a Nintendo console — while technically accurate now, no one thinks of FF VII (etc.) as a "Nintendo game." Feels akin to responding to "what's the best Sonic game for Nintendo" by saying "Sonic 2 via the Genesis / Mega Drive Collection."
That said, I am THRILLED they have come to Switch (as someone who, somehow, has never owned a Sony console) and look forward to playing them! So far I've only played the original FF for NES (via Wii), which I enjoyed a lot!
This game looks fantastic. Adding to the “once I’ve made enough headway in backlog to justify buying more” list (a long one, alas — as is the backlog).
FINALLY beat Mummy Me Maze Forever (or whatever the “It Follows” style level is called) in Captain Toad, so I’m getting started on the Switch DLC. Loving it so far. I never expected to love this game — kinda bought it on a whim — but it’s such a feel-good treat.
Other than that, grinding with my teams in Bowser’s Minion Quest on 3DS, maybe getting back to Super Mario Bros 3 (Super Mario All-Stars version), and Lego Batman on Wii.
I actually have been meaning to replay Yoshi's Island for the past several years, but haven't gotten around to it. I'm hoping I don't find myself disappointed. It was one of my absolute favorite games when I was in elementary school or early middle school (whenever I beat it!). A friend and I played the whole game together on his SNES (I was a Sega kid...), so it also benefits from fond childhood memories. Regardless, I know I will always love the animation and the underground theme music.
This looks like a really special game from an all-star team. I eagerly await the NL review, but may just buy it once it's up even if the reviews aren't glowing. Depends on how my backlog is looking....
@GX_64 Thanks! I guess it's been a while since I read the NL post on the game, because I was misinformed. I definitely intend on playing the game — I just keep getting distracted by other backlog projects. Thanks, again.
My friends and I have repeatedly discussed why this was never a thing. It seems like it would just print money, so I don’t think greed alone can explain its absence.
I just got all of the 3-star ratings for every level, but I’ll sign back in for this (though I doubt he will supplant Dr. Wario as my main). Also, maybe World 18 is open, now.
Lego Batman (Wii)
Kirby's Dreamland 3 (Wii Virtual Console)
Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga + Bowser's Minions (3DS)
Landstalker (Switch)
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Switch)
Dr. Mario World (Mobile)
@MeloMan Here, here! I am playing Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions right now and enjoying it heartily.
But realistically, they should just accept that Paper Mario and Mario Luigi were stealing each other's thunder and combine the series. Bring RPG mechanics back to Paper Mario (guess that paper airplane has sailed) with the team function as an added bonus from the ML series.
N64: Visionary achievement.
GC: Somehow better — among the greatest RPGs ever (no joke).
Wii: The 3D/2D thing was cool, but...something is off?
Wii U: WHAT IS HAPPENING?!
3DS: No for, real guys, I'm really worried something is wrong here!
Switch: TBD.
I'm still very excited for this game (I pre-ordered), though the reviews have tamped down my "maybe this will finally live up to The Thousand Year Door!" wild fantasies pre-launch.
That said, the puzzle battle mechanic actually sounds pretty fun to me, and I'm a sucker for any game where you can explore for secrets ad nauseam. I think the game will be very good, even if I am still left hankering for the feelings of unbridled joy Super Mario RPG and (especially) the first two in the "Paper" series gave me.
I just played Super Mario Land all the way through for the first time via 3DS Virtual Console and it is still a great game. I don’t really think a remake would add much to it. That it doesn’t measure up to the routinely outstanding quality of Mario platformers is not to say it isn’t highly enjoyable in its own right.
Literally one of two good things to come out of THE FILMS THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED (the other being the excellent John Williams' piece "Duel of the Fates").

@Yanina Ha! Indeed. I have a rigorous training regimen in place to prepare myself for the competition, clearly.

Ton of Yoshi’s Crafted World — I’m enjoying it! Inventive, beautiful, and stress-free. Easy as all get up, but that’s a nice change of pace.
