Taito and Natsume Atari have just announced that a new entry in the KiKi KaiKai series (known as Pocky & Rocky in the west) is coming to Switch.
According to Weekly Famitsu, KiKi KaiKai: Kuro Mantle no Nazo (that's a tentative title) is being developed by Tengo Project, a team within Natsume Atari which is formed of staff who worked on the 1992 SNES title KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Mantle, including Toshiyasu Miyabe.
Miyabe had this to say about the announcement:
We started work on a sequel with the thought that if we didn’t respond to requests for a remake now, we wouldn’t have the chance in the future considering the staff’s age. While you may think it’s a remake, it’s a completely new title. It’s loaded with new elements.
The KiKi KaiKai series began life in arcades in 1986. The aforementioned SNES title gave the franchise global fame and would inspire a 16-bit sequel called KiKi KaiKai: Tsukiyo Soushi (Pocky & Rocky 2 in the west) as well as a Game Boy Advance entry called KiKi KaiKai Advance (Pocky & Rocky with Becky).
Tengo Project also worked on The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors and Wild Guns Reloaded, both of which updated existing series for a new generation, to great success.

I might be one of the few people here old enough to remember this series but I absolutely can’t wait!
I loved the original!
Well that's wonderful news, Pocky & Rocky are games I've always wanted to play.
Yes!!! I love Pocky & Rocky!!!
Oooo mg yeesssss
Day one.
If it’s a whole new game can we hope for the original to be a sneaky extra? Maybe all the retro titles could be sneaked in. I dream for a world where more is more
Doubtless I will nab this on release. This team does some seriously seamless updates to these games. I’m happy to see 2D sprite scrolling games are gradually becoming an a legitimate contemporary game style again, and not just a retro thing that needs to identify a preexisting fan base before considered viable
@Strictlystyles Oh no, you are underestimating the number of grognards here, my friend.
Anyone else only know about this game thanks to ProJared? I certainly do
@Strictlystyles
I remember but i honestly never paid much attention to it. Much like other Snes games that got lost in the shuffle such as Aero the acrobat or Bubsy.
@Savino same! My uncle rented it for me and I had no idea what it was at the time but I was hooked at the end: couldn’t beat it though I was too young to understand every mechanic. I regret not saving the money to buy it though
Please let it be a 16 bit style game, like they did with Wild Guns Reloaded and Ninja Saviors! SNES games were great!
@Strictlystyles how dare you assume such things, there is a load of us: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/adult_switch_gamers
True it hasn't updated for quite a few months
The Pocky and Rocky game on Snes is one of my first childhood games, me and my sister used to play that one quite a bit. Curious to see what'll come out of this.
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Love those games.
Say what! Weird to see this game get a sequel. Cool all the same though as the SNES game was pretty good.
Good news, specially ftom who is developing it.
@Strictlystyles not only remember it bought it but had long left home lol
Hopeful for highly detailed 2D sprite graphics but have a feeling it's going to be 2.5D game like that recently announced Monster World remake.
Well I’m old enough to have played this back in the day but missed it then. It wasn’t until recently that I got to try the two for the snes. I loved them. They’re a very strange beast. It’s sort of like a shooter and also reminds me a lot of mystical ninja. I’m looking forward to this. I wish the ninja saviors game would go on sale, I’d love to get it but $40 is too much.
Never played the originals but watched a speed run, and it looks super fun! Defiantly gonna check this out. Maybe they will bring the originals to the SNES app to get people interested in the series?
Oh my god I loved those games as a kid! They were so hard but I loved all the different transformations and the magical items you could throw, let's hope the originals will come to NSO
Definitely got my eye on this. If it's the same team as the Wild Guns and Ninja Warriors remakes/sequels then we should get some rather lovely pixel art ❤️
That's some pretty enticing news!
@Strictlystyles seriously! I loved these on snes but surprised nobody talks about them
Heard of it but never played it. I am interested, especially considering who is involved
@Strictlystyles You are not alone. 40 years here and still counting.. I was playing when I was a kid Mario Bros + Duck Hunt in a cartridge on NES!
I was late to the game and didn't find out about this series until my mid-20s, so I don't quite have the same nostalgia goggles as everyone else. Even still, I'm always a sucker for a high quality couch co-op, and this game definitely hits that mark.
Had the original on the SNES. It was one of those "out of nowhere" titles in the vein of M.U.S.H.A., The Lost Vikings, and many others from that era that were either new or scarcely known IPs, yet held their own against the best of the big publishers' offerings. The Asian theme and amazing music, along with great gameplay, made Pocky and Rocky a true hidden gem for the system.
Sweet. I remember renting Pocky and Rocky several times back in the day but never owned it. Time to change that.
Neat. Maybe....we could get the SNES one on the nintendo online thingy...?
Never played the original games, but I remember seeing this series on and off as I browse gaming articles on the Internet over the years. I'd be interested in trying a Pocky & Rocky game out of curiosity.
@Strictlystyles Me too. The feature in Nintendo Power made it a frequent rental for me because I couldn't find it anywhere to buy, so it was basically what I got from Blockbuster for a long time.
Yooo! This game was ridiculously difficult growing up, only beat it for the first time last year. Looking forward to this!!
@Entrr_username I feel honored that when I bought my cart at GameStop LONG ago, the dude there, a bearded guy who you'd imagine was a CoD (or whatever was popular before that) player exclaimed "What the **** is this?" when checking out the order.
This game was fantastic on SNES. So glad we're getting a localized release! Now, let's just get a new Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon... We missed out of the DS one.
@Severian Still remember passing up Wild Guns when it was in the clearance bin at Software Etc., I think it was (would definitely have been one of the game stores that existed before GameStop bought them all), but considering it.
Had the rare chance to have my parents buy me a SNES game and was holding out I'd find an RPG for cheap somewhere.
(decades later, I think I got all the RPGs but no original Wild Guns)
Yet again, another announcement that could have been a 1-minute part of the September Direct.
@Moroboshi876 That's what I'm hoping for, the Wild Guns Reloaded treatment. The game feels the same and it basically is the same but with way more to it.
Very excited! Easy day one. Hopefully it will have online multiplayer!
Best news in a while!
@Qphlat27 Well, they say it's a new game this time, but I wish for them to keep the 16 bit aesthetics. Not flash-like or hand drawn, please.
Never thought this series would be revived! Looking forward to it.
First Bubble Bobble, now Kiki KaiKai...
When will we see Space Invaders Extr3me?
I didn't play the Pocky & Rocky games on SNES when they were current, but they've become two of my favorites on the system when I got around to playing them. They're both very good, and they have enough differences between the two that they're different experiences despite the core game play being the same. I have come to appreciate Natsume as a developer on the NES and SNES. I'm also hoping for this new game to use the same approach Wild Guns Reloaded and Ninja Saviors received.
Wake me up when the localization is confirmed.
Wait did Atari really merge with Natsume? First time I heard of Natsume Atari. Does this mean Pocky and Rocky for the Atari VCS is also possible?
The name Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warrior makes it sound like one of those spiritual successors than a remake or sequel.
Day one for me. Hope the old snes version also gets released on the switch.
@Bunkerneath the thread is still alive, I just posted
The team behind the original game had a real penchant for making SNES games that became insanely valuable in the 21st Century:
Pocky & Rocky - $145
Pocky & Rocky 2 - $423
Wild Guns - $152
The Ninja Warriors - $92.58
(All prices USD from PriceCharting.com)
1 & 2 were great, looking forward to this.
@Slowdive I've added that to the post
Is it just me, or do the characters' look like the aspect ratio is off?
I get that they're chibi-style, but looks like they're slightly stretched horizontally.
@Slowdive watched it now. Looks amazing! 😃😃 So many great games announced and released lately, and now this.. 🤩🤩
Aw that trailer looks very cute, certainly keeps the spirit of the original alive and hearing that remastered main theme brings a tear to my eyes. I'm still not sure if it's a remaster or an all new entry or whatever but I'm excited nonetheless, it is evident that they're putting effort to this.
Nintendo would do wise to add the original titles on their online service for a new generation of fans to play and to encourage sales for the new title. I'm sure Natsume wouldn't object to that
I had Pocky & Rocky on the SNES all the way back when and loved it. Will definitely be keep an eye on this!
Hold me.
It looks... gorgeous.
@Damo Is there any chance of ever seeing the originals on SNES Switch Online ?
@Savino Did you get it?
@ktej75 I sure hope so!
This is 100% my jam
Never played the original series, but this looks directly up my alley. Color me excited.
I was personally never a fan of shooters like this at the time and avoided them at the time in favour of fighting games and platforms although that probably had something to do with me sucking at games like that too. I only play games like it now to experience them even though I know I am not going to be that good and hope they have an easy mode that is forgiving with lives and continues.
@Savino That's great, my dad never liked video games.
Sad to hear. It sucks getting older sometimes.
How old are you if I may ask? (37 here)
I love these games! It had to happen.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....................................................................ssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Strictlystyles Im rather young and I know it, played all of them.
They were hard as balls though so I was never able to complete them but the music SLAPPED.
This will pair very nicely with Shiren The Wanderer!
@RPGamer I can't DISagree more. I for one love follow-ups that retain the old feel of the originals. I would love a Pokemon "spinoff" that went back to traditional 2D sprites. What would they even do? 3D polygon models? Look at Bravely Default 2. The graphics are all over the place, the 3D models look weird, and the increasingly 3D environments are losing the signature charm of the Bravely games. Now the fans have given negative-majority feedback for the demo.
Franchises that successfully retain the feel of the original games while updating the graphics are far and few between, Dragon Quest being one of the few.
Ahhhh so it's just a remake. Still tho, day 1! Looks gorgeous, as do the other remakes shown
YES!
I never managed to beat it and wanted to find a copy on the SNES itself but the things are expensive...
Will definitely get this! Looking forward to the music too!
@Stocksy I second this. In my opinion, every videogame remake or remaster should always contain the option to just play the original, like the "Monkey Island"-special editions or the "Halo" remake did it.
And I'm also always in for complete collections of game series. Luckily we already got some good stuff this generation.
I'm getting it if its physical. I like Pocky and Rocky. Hope they bring back the second one as well.
@Strictlystyles Ehm its not as if its 50 years into the future and your one of the last 80s/90s kids left alive. Most of us are in our 30s.
@Tempestryke it’s not that deep and you don’t have to come across so personally offended Just because I said I “MIGHT” be. And don’t say most of us because the majority of this site commentators are not in thier 30’s and 40’s.
@Strictlystyles I wasn't offended at all. I was just teasing you a bit.
And yes most of us 80s/90s kids are in our 30s.
You are the one being snippy about it.
Just played this game on an emulator and now I’m sold, can’t wait for this to come out
I need this in my life. Where others have failed, this will fill the empty hole in my heart. 😅 (Cotton Reboot is doing a pretty good job until then!)
