Nintendo's at it once again, surprise-dropping a huge-name game on social media like it was an innocent selfie taken at the park. Today's big reveal? A brand new Zelda game.
The game's called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and a new video has been shared to tell us all about it. Just like previous Hyrule Warriors titles, the game has been developed alongside Koei Tecmo, although this one appears to have much more influence from Nintendo and is actually set 100 years before the events of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Hyrule Warriors: The Age of Calamity features gameplay that will be familiar to fans of the Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors games. Focused on performing combos and over-the-top special abilities, the action-heavy gameplay is fast-paced and strategic, perfect for players looking for an intense, non-stop action game with direct ties to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In addition to all the action, the game is loaded with a robust story that depicts the events, relationships and dramatic moments of the Great Calamity in captivating detail.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity finds plenty of inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – not just in its visual style. Many of the most popular and fan-favorite characters from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are playable, including Link and Zelda. In addition to hacking and slashing their way through swarms of enemies to defend Hyrule, players will also solve environmental puzzles, unlock weapons and skills, craft materials, visit shops to obtain items and use the power of the Sheikah Slate, which fans will recognize from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

That’s pretty cool and unexpected. I never got even close to completing all the content in Hyrule Warriors so not sure if I’ll pick this up or not yet. It does look good though so probably will at some point if not at launch though.
Set 100 years before BotW, therefore before Link being frozen and the Guardians dying. Will be buying day one.
Only problem is, you cannot win this game, Calamity Ganon has to win for BotW to happen
I'M SURPRISED, TO SAY THE LEAST
Just when I thought I had sworn off Warriors games after musou fatigue, this comes along. The fact that the art style matches BoTW definitely makes this appealing, plus the prequel story elements have me intrigued. It’s entirely unlike Nintendo to address story elements in Zelda with direct prequels or sequels. I love it. Plus, I felt like the champions were underutilized in the original game, and it will be awesome to flesh them out a bit more here, plus see what they can really do, combat-wise. What’s one more musou game, anyway? Sign me up.
This looks awesome. I loved Hyrule Warriors. Day 1 purchase for me.
This is incredible.
I know what I'm hoping for come Christmas
@Shamrock This will be the same Zelda and Link from BoTW, not their ancestors. Remember, they were frozen in time for 100 years, Link in stasis sleep and Zelda being locked into binding Ganon.
Wow out of nowhere! I'm actually loving how nintendo is revealing things now. Surprise games and out in a couple months, much better than languishing for years at a time imo. This'll make a nice Christmas surprise for the kiddos!
This came out of nowhere, but it looks great! Picking this up for sure!
Oooo never played a warriors game, might jump on this one.
Warriors games don't really interest me gameplay-wise, but damn do the setting, story and visuals look good. Will buy day-one
I might be the only one, but I love Nintendo releasing things out of the blue. It's so in character for them, I love it.
I used to get all my Nintendo news from NLife, nowadays a see it first from YouTube notifications! How times have changed
I love such surprise reveals but i am not a fan of Hyrule Warriors. A hard pass for me.
Whoa, what?! I will check this out at lunchtime!
Sounds like a great setting/context for a Musou / Warriors type of game.
Edit:
Yes oh yes, watched the announcement and this is the perfect Holiday surprise we needed, and a picture-perfect setting for a Warriors game! Those cut scenes look utterly epic and worthy of BOTW! It has been decades since I last played a Musou game, but I can't wait for this one. Finally we get to see the Champions and Zelda in action!
Preordering this and Super Mario 3D World tonight!!
Not a fan of these types of games. But just like Persona 5 Scramble I am excited for this one.
Oh my gosh! This really is awesome! I love that we will most likely get more prequel backstory to breath of the wild. And then we have breath of the wild 2, so this should pleasantly hold me over until then if it’s plumped full like the first hyrule warriors. First day buy for sure!
Toei is really upping their quality with Persona 5: Scamble and this game.
More a focused story instead of 30 chars that joined each other for a stupid reason.
I hate warriors games. Pass
I can't wait for this. It's great how the story fits within BoTW.
I want it for the story, but I struggled to stay motivated with the original as it's so repetitive so mixed feelings on this.
I'm so excited! But also ready to die crying!
The style looks incredible. This. This was the something new I was waiting for.
At last, something new.
Yes! Yes! Yes! A prequel story! Torna the Golden Country? More like Hyrule the Golden Country.
Ugh, no thank you
November 20. I did not see that coming. I haven’t even played BotW.
Well nice, the first was great so this should be good.
I'm not a huge fan of Warriors style gameplay, but this one does look really good. I'm excited.
I bought the original during a lean spell last year but didn't complete it. I got stuck at some point half way through and never went back.....
@Shamrock What was BotW? It was also Teen, right?
Hyrule Warriors was a great game, and that, mixed with Breath of the Wild's music, graphics, story and world, is going to be one hell of a masterpiece.
I woke up to this! I liked the first Hyrule Warriors and I’ll love this one too.
Yoooo I loved the past 2 warriors games. Sign me up! Especially if this has split screen co-op.
Me, not a Zelda Fan: LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
well, this looks a bit different from generic Warriors games....it looks that the enemies have finally some weight applied to them so battles may not be as boring as usual
Don't like Musou games at all, but it's genius to do a prequel with that sort of story as one. I find it hilarious that a Musou BotW game will have more story than the actual game. Lol
So it seems like this Hyrule Warriors game will actually be canon, unlike the first game. That's great!
This is cool. I thought the first one was fun enough and it seems that they've been dealing with the Zelda team from Nintendo much more closely this time. What a great way to expand the lore that they set up in BOTW and allow more time for BOTW2.
Wow, talk about seeing an opportunity and seizing it.
Great move, although I'm not a fan of the Warriors games, it makes total sense given the event in BotW's pre-story and the cast of characters.
Oh my god!
I've yet to play a Warriors game, but this will, of course, be a day one purchase for me.
Amazing surprise.
A new Hyrule Warriors game?! I'm loving this surprise announcement. Loved the first one. I'll get this one for sure.
@Shamrock this isn't taking the place of BoTW 2, it's still in development. Did you watch the opening of the video?
Brilliant idea imo. It'll be great to experience that war and Warriors gameplay is probably the best way to do.
But I still don't think a Zelda spinoff/prequel, a lazy port of Pikmin 3 and a divisive Mario port collection is really good enough for this holiday season, even if I want 2/3 of these. Nintendo still need to announce something big.
This looks interesting!
My only concern is continuity... it shows Zelda using powers, which (maybe spoiler?) in BOTW for all the flashbacks of that era she can't access her powers until Fort Hateno. Will her fights be at the end of the campaign?
Wow, wow , wow i just stopped breathing!!!
I neeeed this game now.
Welldone koei tecmo.
Hope it’s actually more fun than the original. The original got old fast.
Holy crap yes!!!
I really hope you can play as Prince Sidon
I'm in, day one purchase!!
Can not wait! Had the original on the WiiU, 3DS and the Switch.
I've never played a musou game before, looks like this might be the one to get me to try them, hype!!
Haven’t finished hyrule warriors. Massive game with massive hours to dig in
Is it online? I avoided the first due to lack of online multiplayer.
Nintendo just shadow dropping games whenever they please, I mean they've pretty much taken up my next gen budget with Mario games, real Mario Kart and now this
So a spinoff is actually canon in this instance?
Kinda sad it won't have Kass, but I'll definitely be picking this up.
This looks amazing! Can we pre-order this? It sure looks better than the first.
First one was amazing!!
I really hope they add online play though!
Super excited regardless!
Based on the box art it looks like you can play as a Guardian. That’s pretty cool
Releases the day after Cyberpunk. Decisions will have to be made.
@Shamrock This is being developed by an entirely different studio than BoTW 2. That’s still coming. And Warriors games are almost always rated T. The first Hyrule Warriors had a T rating. Even Twilight Princess was rated T. It’s not at all surprising.
@Shamrock You're kidding, right?
Great cover art!
Easy day 1 buy for me. Not the zelda game I wanted in 2020( a warriors game), but im all in on this for sure. I love how much of botw's assets they're using. Absolutely brilliant!
Wow, so BOTW will basically be a trilogy when all is said and done.
I enjoyed HW:DE but I'm on the fence on this one, I may grab it later down the line if it isn't too similar to the previous one.
I really want to buy this, the setting is brilliant and seeing the Champions on the battlefield gave me chills down my spine...
BUT
... I really hope it runs better than the 24fps in portable mode of the first Hyrule Warriors. It really ruins the musou experience.
Great, great move.
I'm not the biggest fan of the Warriors game, but they're fun and the connection to the Breath of the Wild's lore is hard to resist. Also, as others have mentioned, given that the Great Calamity is supposed to be a massive all-out war anyways going the Warriors route makes perfect sense. Very, very excited.
I don't play the Warriors games, but I do enjoy the character designs and spell effects they present.
They finally remembered that the holidays are happening lol. But this is great, honestly. Played the first one to pieces on Wii U and then enjoyed a lot of that same stuff again on Switch so having a totally fresh one to blast through sounds like a good time to me.
At the end of the trailer on the website, it says more information will be revealed 26/9.
Perhaps a date for a direct?
Probably just specific for this game though, like an extended gameplay demo.
@Bunkerneath So basically like watching Infinity war :3
This looks amazing!
i'm actually happy that my fellow nintendo fans aren't complaining and i'm happy they're using the botw engine for the next few games overall i'm just happy :]
I shall watch this when I get home. Not normally one for Warriors games, but colour me intrigued...
Must have game for me, because everything
Good thing I can stop crying over getting the first Hyrule Warriors on the 3DS and not on Switch
I'm only curious to see if BotW2 can renovate the Zelda formula properly. Barring that, BotW is just cringe.
I was wondering where the switch's yearly zelda was but I wasn't expecting this! Hell yeah bring it on!
Wow! I have never been more excited for a Warriors title! I can't wait to experience the Calamity! So, I guess in this game, losing is canon!
Even more, I wonder if there will be some story nuggets that will hint at Breath of the Wild 2.
Cool!
So this being a prequel to BotW, might indicate that BotW2 is a sequel, set after the events of the first game.
Well look at that. I never played HW. Didn’t interest me but lord almighty does Nintendo know how to present a trailer. I got feels of when they first announced BOTW This is definitely a day one purchase for me. I’m not familiar with the HW formula but lord Jesus do I love a backstory explanation.
@Jmjfrank She was using the Sheikah Slate's Stasis rune. It's canon that the slate belonged to her at this time, so her combat is probably built around it.
Well, this explains the reissue of the champion amiibo. I like (but don't love) the Warriors games, but I loved Breath of the Wild, so this is a must-have for me. Looking forward to revisiting this world.
Being a prequel to Breath of the Wild with the same artstyle and characters is an excellent and fitting creative choice.
Dayyyyyy Ooooonnnee!!! Hyrule Warriors was my 2nd most played game on Wii U and on Switch(Smash 4 and U being the 1st) can't wait
I'll be curious to see if this is actually canon. I mean, it certainly looks like it will be but they haven't point blank said that it is.
And if it is canon, will they take this game seriously, or will it be over-the-top nutso and you can play as every Zelda character ever, including Tingle.
I am not a fan of the Warrior games but this seems to be a must play just to experience the calamity.
Well played Nintendo, well played.
What can I say? I didn't fancy the original Hyrule Warriors game, but this looks awesome. I even got a little bit of that same chill I got watching that first story trailer for BotW. Yeah, I'm in.
@Panopticon How have they not blanked out said its in canon? The game uses the world, story and characters from breath of the wild and you play during an event which wasn't shown in BOTW. Heck we even know the ending (spoilers, we lose).
So that’s why they are restocking the Champions amiibo.
Still no big December release... I wonder what it'll be...
Welp, guess we're getting a playable BotW Zelda regardless of how BotW2 plays out (unless I'm forgetting her already being added in the first HW at some point).
@RobHughes it probably ain't gonna happen he was just a kid 100 years ago where the game is gonna take place
It just makes so much sense, its such a brilliant idea. So you wanted to see/participate in the battle leading up to the events in BOTW?? Well here you go.....times a million haha
Love it, such a genius idea
Hopefully no breakable weapons though!
One of the things I did like about BotW was the backstory. It annoyed me we never really found out what happened. Now, we're going to! I can't wait for this, although the timing of it isn't great. I have a feeling it's going to get drowned by the new consoles.
@thesilverbrick I think this is actually the PERFECT way to flesh out the story and the Champions' backgrounds. Instead of just telling or showing us what mighty warriors they were supposed to be, this gives us the chance to become them. The first Hyrule Warriors game barely piqued my interest, but this—THIS looks fantastic.
(This is in response to your first comment, BTW; I haven't plumbed the depths of the comments yet, haha.)
This looks awesome. I enjoyed the original on Wii U and this looks even better. I'll definitely be pre-ordering it!
Virgin Atlus: Can't even tell us when Persona 5 Strikers will be localized months after its Japanese release
Chad Nintendo: Announced Breath of the Wild Musou for a global release 2 months later
@Bunkerneath I presume the final mission will be for Zelda to seal Ganon away. While everything around her goes to shi[redacted].
Right it's on the list of switch games to buy. Gotta pop up to game in Redditch on release day and hopefully get a copy.
I was debating on playing the first one but THIS ONE I don't think I can manage to skip!
Finally a new game that weren't on Wii U first.
Gonna buy this as i loved the first one.
Sure, why not. Anything that has Zelda on it is fantastic.
@dux The first one is very good. Play both.
Day FREAKING One for me! I will be importing the UK Koei Tecmo Collectors Edition. I hope Nintendo America makes one instead. I completed Hyrule Warriors DE and BOTW!! 🥰
It sounds great, but my main concern it's Koei Tecmo. They are one of the worst offenders for scumbag DLC practices (Hyrule Warriors included). I really don't want to support them.
This is a really cool surprise. Never played a Warriors game, but a Breath of the Wild prequel ..I mean c'mon I'm all in!
@Bunkerneath It would be cool if in the final missions you got to play as Ganon or his minions. Too bad Breath of the Wild doesn't really have memorable (talking) villains aside from Master Koga, and he's treated as a joke.
@Panopticon What makes you think this won't be be canon? It's clearly a Breath of the Wild prequel.
Sadly that means no windwaker hd for 2020-2021.End of 2020, that's way to far.
You can play...as the Champions?! Yes!!! I always wanted them to expand on their backstories and such, and now I won't have to merely theorize about such things! Like, that alone sold me on the game, but November 2020?! That's not long at all!
@westman98 Warriors team: Nintendo, we make these warriors games, any suggestions to get even non-warriors fans to perk up and take notice?
Nintendo: hold my beer...
okay, so excited here, wohoo!
@kingeo What makes you think this mean no Wind Waker? If there will be a Wind Waker port, it will most likely come next year for Zelda's 35th anniversary.
Where did this come from?, Nintendo are dropping some bombs, and I expect more to come for this year.
This just makes me think the E3 Direct this year would have been so sick if it weren't for COVID. Think about if the combined all the little Directs and announcements into a real Direct, how epic would that have been.
I love zelda but I hate musou/warriors gameplay. It gets so boring and the story usually suck which makes not a fan of koei tecmo. Although zelda story in this might make want to get one but my backlog is to big and will be for quite a while. I will sadly have to pass. The last warriors game I played was fire emblem warriors which me really sick of the copy paste formula they had. I played hyrule warriors for the Wii U when it came out.
Haven't felt compelled to play a Dynasty Warriors game before but this one looks great from what they've shown, for sure. Does there tend to be any exploration/wandering around in these or is it just fight after fight?
Shut up and take all of our money!
I literally just put BotW back into my Switch for a new playthrough. Downright prescient timing.
Now we need a release date for doom eternal for switch.
@Ichiban HW:AoC - a sword can cut through 1,000 enemies a level.
100 years later - a sword can cut through 10 enemies before it breaks.
Day 1 finally some good news
@johnvboy There’s no way they’re going to sit back in the lead up to Xmas...
@RobHughes I think it'll be better than that. Remember we're 100 years in the past. You'll be able to play as baby Sidon!!!
@Ventilator Thanks for the tip and I do believe you, but between Animal Crossing, Cyberpunk and other smaller stuff, I've bought too many games this year already for the price they're charging (tax conversion is though here in Brazil, ) let alone finish! I'll keep a very close eye on this one though
I loved Hyrule Warriors, this is an amazing news.
Now what’s in store on The 26th?
I immediately shrugged this off. Never really got on with genre back in the day.. but to their credit they've really tried to recreate the world of Breath of the Wild in this.. gone from an absolute no, to a firm maybe
Count me in. HW was one of my favourite WiiU games, this will be awesome.
@Jslade Next year is the release of breath of the wild 2.There is no way Nintendo will release 2 zelda games in a single year.If they were to do this, they could release a zelda remaster in 2017, 2018 or 2019 but they didn't want to cannibalize the sales of each title.
@KingBowser86 Well BotW was 2017's game of the year and has a 97 on Metacritic. So clearly a large majority of gamers don't think of the game as "cringe".
@WiltonRoots,
You would think so, however the Switch would sell out no matter what, as for the potential customers the console has tonnes of games.
@PapaPedro I totally agree. To be honest, when the second DLC pack was titled “The Champions Ballad,” I got really excited that we were going to get more of their story, but sadly, that wasn’t the case. It looks like this will finally do them some justice, it seems.
Good lord this looks amazing!*
*translated into family friendly speak so as to avoid a ban!
Now this is a nice surprise.
Going to admit I still would have preferred a Mushroom Kingdom Warriors cause I really would love a game like this with playable Yoshi but I'll happily take this too, I quite enjoyed the first Hyrule Warriors (and its ports) and will enjoy this one as well. Fire Emblem Warriors didn't do much for me because I don't really have much of a connection with that series but Zelda, and Breath of the Wild, I love very much, so this is great!
@MsJubilee I think it’s funny when they do this just to hear all the sputtering from Youtubers.
@JoeyTS So do a lot of other terrible and predatory games. Ignored.
This is AWESOME!
I really enjoyed the first Hyrule Warriors on Switch, so I’ll definitely be picking this up day one (or perhaps ask my fiancé to get it for me as a Christmas present if I can muster a bit of patience and self-control, though it is not a very likely scenario 😂).
another reason 2020 is definitely fine release wise
@dux Yeah. Problem is too many big scale games. AC Valhalla this year too.
Hyrule Warriors story mode is only 15 hours. 3-400 hours if you play the huge amount of bonus levels in adventure modes.
I didn't play the last Hyrule Warriors but oh my gosh this looks really intriguing. I think I'll get it especially if it's really story focused.
I loved the first game and just got back into Fire Emblem Warriors (3DS because I got that one first). Looks like instead of moving on to the Switch version, I'll take this one.
Can you play as Ganon?
I'm guessing by "100 years before BotW" they mean 100 years before when the majority of the game takes place and when Link was put into deep sleep, and not 100 years before that, meaning 200 years before the majority of BotW. I know that should be self evident, but some people seem confused.
Hyrule Warriors was an awesome game, my first time really playing any mosou game b/c they all looked ugly, brown and repetitive to me, so I'm going to have to say: This >>>> BotW 2.
@Bunkerneath I can see a last boss where you beat Ganon then he turns into the calamity and kick you ass into a 100 year sleep. Although I wouldn't mind playing as Ganon to destroy hordes of soldiers and beat Link as the last boss.
Like many others ive never been interested in the hack n slash nature of the warriors titles. This looks pretty compelling though so might give it a go!
@Bunkerneath The events could be alternative to what actually happens. For all we know, even if Calamity Ganon is defeated, he may return, and perhaps Link still (actually decides himself) goes to cryosleep after hearing about the possibility of Calamity Ganon's return. Perhaps he writes a message to someone to spread around that they would need somebody else to defend during his absence.
I wonder how much of the warriors micro management you have to do? Never played Hyrule Warriors because of that. If it's a more linear then I might give this a try...never mind I will try because of the LORE!
@kingeo If BotW 2 is coming late next year (which I have a feeling it will), it would actually make sense for Nintendo to release a Zelda collection in the spring/summer, especially since 2021 will be Zelda’s 35th anniversary. Perhaps they could do something similar to what they’re doing with Mario 3D All-Stars - for example, putting Twilight Princess HD, Wind Waker HD and a straight Wii port of Skyward Sword in a collection with a £50 price tag. So don’t give up hope!
Nice will get this one if Breath of the Wild 2 had not already come out by the time I had money.
I'm actually more excited about this - Age of Calamity - than the Super Mario 3D All-Stars. At the end of the launch trailer it even says, "next update 9.26" I wonder what that's going to be! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDMWRRAEogs
@Bunkerneath I suppose you win by protecting Zelda to the end, and not dying before
Day One for me!!
This came out of nowhere, I really enjoyed the first on the Wii U and even the 3DS port I played a lot of so I will definitely pick this up.. For those wondering about the Nintendo related line-up for the end of the year I think we now have it...
September 18th - Super Mario 3D All Stars
October 1st - Super Mario Bros 35
October 16th - Mario Kart Live
October 23rd - Cadence Of Hyrule - Crept Of The Necrodancer
October 30th - Pikmin 3 Deluxe
November 20th - Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Bravely Default II - 2020 ??
February 12th - Super Mario 3D World Bowser's Fury
Not a bad lineup of games actually.....
Wow, that's a brilliant idea. I've not delved into Hyrule Warriors or any other Warriors games but this is really interesting. I'm not usually into hack and slash gameplay but I think I'll give it a go regardless.
I should probably finish Breath of the Wild before then. I've played over 100 hours but never beat it. I haven't even gone near the castle.
Day 1 for me.
Can’t wait to play this and replay BotW before BotW 2 is released.
I don't usually like hack and slash games but I'm going to have to give this game a go. The premise looks way too interesting and I absolutely love the idea of seeing the actual war unfold. Definitely will be an excellent holiday game! Between this and the 3D Mario Collection announcements, this is shaping up to be a really solid end of the year!
@Jooles_95 That's would be nice but I can't see how they would put all these games into a collection when they could release them individually for a full price like what they did with all the Wi U ports this far.
Wow, glad I didn't get the other one.
The insiders from Nintendo who are working at cleaning toilets and heard them were right!
Excellent! Now we just need a warriors style prequel to Wind Waker!
The story bits would be interesting but I am not going to play a warriors game...
@johnvboy I think this is it from Nintendo for the year (but we should still have a few third party surprises)
Finally! Not the Zelda I had in mind, but still pretty cool. Hyrule warriors was pretty fun, and I always thought they would make a sequel someday. I never thought it would center around botw though.
I am wondering: They are working closer with the Zelda team, right? That can only mean good things!
Yeah, botw2 will be next year after all. Just make it strong, I'll take this game in the meantime.
Alrightttt here’s the big November game then
Sept - Mario 3D Allstars
Oct - Pikmin 3
Oct - Mario 35
Nov - Hyrule Warriors
Feb - Mario 3D World.
Pulse we should still have No More Heroes and Bravely Default somewhere in there..
Not so doomed afterall:)
Loving Nintendo doing their own thing with these shadow drops!
This looks fab
Oh hell yeah! Just in time for my birthday!
I loved the first, but I might skip this as I know how it ends 😂
Looks gorgeous, I'm guessing they're using the BoTW engine here?
Direct's are dead
@kingeo There is one difference though - Twilight Princess and Wind Waker already are HD ports of GameCube titles, while all other WiiU titles ported to Switch (Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad, DK Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, Mario Bros U and Mario 3D World) were brand new games built from the ground up. Being a port of a port of a mid-noughties game might make them a good fit for a Switch Zelda collection (if that makes sense).
@Late
The castle is the best "dungeon" in the game! Do head out over there as soon as you think you're able. You don't really have to beat the game once you're in, anyway. There's a point of no return, but it's pretty obvious where that is. You can just turn around and fly away, if you wish. I know I did, plenty of times. The best loot's in the castle, so it's fun to just explore and find everything.
Style and Art on point, keeps the BOW vibe. As a Muso games addict (sadly) I can't wait to see how combat and UI, mechanics and maps, goals and the story co-evolve. they purposefully left these out, I think they have more new stuff to show.
...Seems like it's not going to be like the first game....so, eh...figures. :/
Finally Nintendo announce something other than a port, really looking forward to this, just need to finish up breath of the wild first
Beautiful box-art by the way. I am wondering if it ends with Link losing, it should be otherwise the story is wrong. I also wonder if they plan a big roster of playable characters or not. I mean: Hyrule warriors had tons of playable characters, but technically they could only do Link, Zelda, the champions? Maybe only botw characters, but that's still a pretty nice cast (Impa, Purah, Kass?).
My biggest pet peeve with this announcement is that it's gonna be another Warriors/Musou game. And I already know how formulaic and mindless those games are. I remember playing a demo of this game at a store and playing Toon Link and using nothing but his hammer and watched enemies just die and do nothing about it, and I was like "Yeah, okay. I think I'm done." It's nice that Nintendo's helping with the development of this game, but I still feel like it's gonna be very similar to the previous game which most Warriors game are like that.
Inject it into my veins
@russell-marlow Well, yeah, but IIRC, you can adjust the difficulty and that way you would need more tools and planning to win. I remember there were some difficult missions in the game.
@Henmii I believe I saw a young Impa in the trailer (or at least the character looked like a Sheikah), so I believe we can expect more characters. That said, the roster will be way smaller than the one is the original HW.
@Devlind,
Yeah, unless they all magically visit through portals, it could happen.
Never really been interested in Musou games, I’m generally not into repetitive beat-em-ups, but the mention of environmental puzzles intrigues me. Not sure I’ll buy this one but I’ll definitely keep an eye on it.
@Fantasia - I'm 100% sure that this one will be canon.
@Devlind That doesn't justify the endless waves of enemies that just wait for you to attack them. The thrill of the grand spectacle of battles wears out real quick when you realize you're mostly going through the motions and there being a lack of struggle against basic enemies.
This looks great! I hope the zelda team have had a big influence!
I know we have to wait for more details, but....will there be a bunch of characters outside of the champions? I haven't played the original Hyrule Warriors or other Warriors games, but I thought part of their appeal is the variety/ customization in fighting styles.
Also, wondering how they will have the mission selection. It would be interesting if it was semi-linear. Having different branching decisions could add another layer of replay-ability. That would also keep the spirit of Breath of the Wild's freedom of doing what you want when you want.
VERY exciting!! I sunk almost 200 hours into the first Hyrule Warriors, & am more than eager to jump back into the fray!!
Wow! This is a PERFECT way to experience the Great Calamity. 👍👍
Ok, I couldn't love Nintendo more. Thank you!!
@Panopticon - considering how closely they said they worked with Nintendo for this game, I'm 100% sure it's canon. And as I said over on Zelda Dungeon, This is a breath of the wild game with Hyrule Warrior mechanics, not just another Hyrule Warriors game.
I hope they make a warriors game based around ocarina of time next.
@SegaBlueSky - They're 100% combat-based. But this one looks like it's also really story-based too, so. Take that as you will.
@FlaviusFire Can you elaborate?
Based on some of the footage shown, it looks like it's gonna be more of the same but in the BoTW setting.
Wow, more outta nowhere than an RKO, but this is great news!
I loved HW on Wii U and still plan on getting to the Definitive edition on Switch. Great premise, I was hoping they would delve deeper into pre calamity life.
I'll likely get this. 1 I want to see BoW world 100 years ago, and I've been wanting to play as the other Guardians since the release of BoW. I secretly hoped the DLC was going to let you play as them in the past. O well. Now we get this. I'm excited!
My prayers have been answered. So that means that September to November there is some sort of switch game. Maybe something in December, I don't know?
@russell-marlow - I mean, there's no way to 100% tell for sure beforehand, but it looks to me as though (and if you listen to what they said carefully in the full announcement trailer, the six minute one) The story of howt this came about is from them wanting to tell the story of what happens before Breath of the Wild, and realizing that it would fit the Warriors gameplay formula pretty well. So expect Warriors gameplay, but considering how much new cutscene clips there were in the trailer I'm guessing that they added a lot a lot of story to this.
Just my take on it.
Instabuy on this one 😍💰
@FlaviusFire Ah interesting. I'll probably have to wait and see, not completely sold on the format but if the supporting story is good enough I'd be tempted.
@SegaBlueSky - I mean, I only played the first Hyrule Warriors because it was Zelda, not because I like combat games. I enjoyed it though, and considering that this is a combination of that and a prequel of Breath of the Wild, I'm almost 100% getting it.
I never got to play the first game so will be getting this.
If Persona 5S isn’t coming out this year I might just pick this up. I really enjoyed the first Hyrule Warriors game.
@FlaviusFire I'd honestly prefer if this game played more like Tecmo's 3D Ninja Gaiden games than their Warriors games.
Disappointed that this is the Zelda game for the year. I would've preferred a port of Wind Waker or Twilight Princess HD to a hack and slash game. But I will probably pick it up to play through the story of the great calamity. Only ever played a few minutes of any Musou games and lost interest very quickly.
Okay, so I was sitting there doing school work and one of my friends linked me the YouTube video for the trailer. I'm like, "Oh, that looks interesting! It's obviously just some DLC for Hyrule Warriors on the Switch." And I thought it looked cool, but as I had the 3DS version and bought all the DLC for it, I never intended to buy Hyrule Warriors definitive edition, and although this looked cool, it wasn't enough to sway me.
Then, out of pure curiosity, I decided to watch the 6-minute full announcement as it was auto-suggested below. And that was when I got excited, because that video explains that this is a fully Nintendo-involved, almost definitely canon game. Hyrule Warriors gameplay-wise, but much more story involved than the original. And not only that, but its own separate title. And that was what convinced me.
Will try to get this on release if I can. Very much stoked to play it.
Honestly, I'm just not very interested in Breath of the Wild's world. I just didn't care for the game. So while Hyrule Warriors is my favorite Zelda game, I already know how this ends and don't feel motivated to play it.
On the bright side, It's not a port! Yes! A new game! Good work, Nintendo!
Now give Koei Tecmo a fighter in Smash as thank you for all the good collab work they do with you.
I like these shadow drop announcements after work. Not buying another musou game but I'll co-op this with my friend and his copy of the game.
Well that’s a pleasant surprise. Never been a huge fan of this type of game but it looks really good.
@LArachelDisciple - That's an interesting take on it. Most people are like "yes BoTW" and "no Hyrule Warriors" but you're the other way around on it XD
I think this is the game that could save Nintendo's 2020.
@LArachelDisciple Ryu Hayabusa confirmed?
Immediate pre-order! Musou games are my favorite. There's just something so satisfying about them.
@WiltonRoots
Consider me one of those folks who would not be nearly as interested in this game if it was just a bog-standard Hyrule Warriors 2.
Yay! A canon Zelda spinoff! i dont mind at all waiting for botw 2 if it means more awesome games like these! we will have a botw trilogy!!
@iMarkU @Jslade I'm sure it is canon, but we have enough games that aren't canon to make me question whether or not this one is. Cadence of Hyrule, Link's Crossbow Training, the original Hyrule Warriors...Twilight Princess Picross....all the CD-i games...all of which use the characters, the world, the story, etc, so that's not a good enough argument.
@FlaviusFire That's a really good way to put it, well done. Unfortunately at it's core it is a Warriors game. Zelda games are usually Day One for me, but I think I'll probably hold off on a review for this one.
This looks fantastic! Not much of a dynasty warriors fan but this has potential.
I've passed on all of the Warriors games thus far, but I'm very interested in this one, especially since they are reporting that they worked closely along with the Zelda team.
So excited will be buying day one! 😁😁
nice to know but not buying this. Imo waste of money.
I'll be getting this for sure and will probably go ahead and finally get Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition. I love Breath Of The Wild so this is a day one purchase for sure, the ones who were all doom and gloom need to just relax.
I am all over this! More because of the BOTW lore than anything else
Looks really cool, probably gonna wait for a price drop/find it used, I'm not really into this style of game enough to justify paying full price.
I absolutely loved the original Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U and would love to try this out as well at some point. However, I really feel like it would be to my benefit to play through Breath of the Wild first (Hopefully soon, I promise!). I'm worried about some spoilers otherwise.
Gonna be too busy with cyberpunk and the latest Yakuza, but maybe for commuting.
@Panopticon - I probably shall as well. I'd like to see how story focused it will be.
Not sure why it is but I just can't get into the Hyrule 1 vs 1000 game play. Maybe I am playing these games wrong.
port, nintendo has no games, lazy, they are giving up on switch...
woops, sorry, my clipboard was just ready to go...
@Panopticon I would say the game playing out a very specific event that is a huge part of the Breath of the Wild lore confirms this will be a canon game.
@ImagineerNik No, they don't. Nintendo will be completely fine.
@Tyranexx Spoilers...from a prequel? Don't worry about it, Jar Jar Binks isn't in the game.
Misleadingly written. I know you want clicks, but Hyrule Warriors is as much a new Zelda as Mario Kart Tour is a new Mario. It's a fun little spin-off, but these games are Warriors wearing the skin of whatever franchise they cross over with.
@Jslade And I totally agree with that, you're probably definitely right. But knowing other Warriors games, I'm sure there will also be over-the-top "extra" parts that aren't canon, like Tingle and Ganondorf teaming up for some co-op against their enemies Ruto and Midna
Great news.
I loved Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U and Switch (double dipped) as well as Fire Emblem Warriors.
(I even I have the One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 game which is in my backlog.)
I thought they'd save this for Zelda's 35th Anniversary year, not that I am complaining!
This is excellent timing. Am going to get the 35 year All-Stars using the Nintendo Online Vouchers and had been mulling over which other game to get. Decision made easy now.
Not that there's any point in posting on a thread with 250 comments, since everything's been said at this point. But I'm still so excited about this. I secretly hoped we would get the story of what happened before the war as DLC, then it became clear that wouldn't happen. Then I thought we might see it in BotW2, but the trailer really didn't give that impression.
This very much feels like getting to have it both ways, especially considering that a sequel to a 3rd party produced fanservice game gets to be officially canonized in the timeline.
So no BotW 2 this year. Boo
@Tyranexx
Mm, I'd say so, yeah.
True, this Hyrule Warriors is a prequel, but it probably assumes familiarity with Breath of the Wild. Also, much of the story in Breath of the Wild is told in the form of flashbacks to the time period (and war) covered in this prequel, so the latter might spoil the content of those flashbacks (and what they slowly reveal about the characters).
This is crazy, from nothing to this? This month, Mario all stars. October, pikmin 3. November, hyrule wariors. Now all that's left is december.... what could that be like?
Wow. Didn't expect this. Hyruke Warriors was so good.
Maybe THIS is why BotW amiibo are getting a reprint...
Ummmm who threw that missile!! 😱😱 I’m going to be broke for Christmas and this rate... sorry kids 🤣
Checklist:
-get out of bed.
-water the plants.
-feed the dogs.
-casually announce a BotW Warriors style prequel.
-20 minutes of zen meditation.
-do the dishes.
This really shifts Hyrule Warriors up my backlog — gotta play that before sinking into this over the holidays. Thanks for a great couple of weeks of announcements, Nintendo!!! (And NL for delivering the news.)
Well this was unexpected but looks cool. My question is though, will other characters be playable from other games? I just want to mess up mobs as Fierce Deity Link again
@Kabloop I wish they made this a little more like Diablo. I sorta liked Hyrule Warriors, but really not sure this prequel will be for me. Won’t rule it out if it reviews well, but at the same time, I am not pumped about this.
@rockodoodle
I didn't give Hyrule Warriors much of a chance. I just know that IMO the combat seemed repetitive. Taking on gigantic groups of enemies for me isn't a lot of fun. Again I didn't play all that long, I wish as you say there were some RPG elements involved but they will sell a lot of copies I'm sure.
AVAILABLE ONLY UNTIL JUNE 22ND 2021
@Amrulez I felt the same way about Berzerk and Dragon Quest Heroes. Like wow, it’s amazing that there are hundreds of enemies on screen at one time, yet only 3-4 of them attack at any given time. Felt like useless button mashing.
I had no idea that I’d ever want a Warriors game so badly! Roll on November 😊
@LUIGITORNADO judging by those comments 2021 might be a stretch! In some ways between this and whatever does come out for Z35 next year I’d be happy to wait if it means it’s perfect
We will finally get to see what happened 100 years prior.
The backstory of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Now, the best part. For me at least...
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild did not take full advantage of Nintendo Switch because it released on the Nintendo Wii U.
This game, however is purely for Nintendo Switch.
@thesilverbrick "musou fatigue" is absolutely a real thing... but Ultimate Alliance and now this have pulled me right back in!
When Persona 5 scramble going to be release for switch?
@Samuel-Flutter It's a Musou game. I doubt there won't be extra unlockable characters. Heck. Maybe we'll get Kass' master?
Oh god we get to watch the Champions die T_T
Nice box art!
@gamerjo
Atlus: "Well, we need to do about 10 polls to gauge consumer interest, then we need to consider it for a long time, then maybe."
That was so unexpected!
Not a fan of this type of game, but will buy it if they take care of the story.
I think this 1vs1k idea fits the champions perfectly, but I'm not sure how they'll do to include Zelda on it. All of her growing arc, which was the best part on BOTW story, kind doesn't make sense if she can defeat an army on her own.
On one hand it's infuriating that Nintendo is now shadow dropping this stuff. There's no fun at all.
OTOH it's hilarious.
Microsoft: Series S: Next gen power for the price of Switch!
Nintendo: BotW Prequel. Boom.
Nintendo adopting the Stephen King approach. Not all stories have happy endings.
This'll be a lot of fun to play with the family over Christmas. Now, let's have a pre-order collectors edition!
Spoiler alert: You'll lose
Weird a game with a set unhappy ending (calamity Ganon wins) Or will this break canon and allow you to defeat Ganon making another timeline split (see OoT)
@MegaVel91 There will no doubt be unlockable characters probably such as Impa and the King of Hyrule (or maybe even Link's family that was cut from the final game), but Kass is definitely not going to be in it. His master would make me happy to play as.
I've never played a warrior game. Can they be played solo? Are there rpg elements?
Now the question is, is this Nintendo's big holiday title, or do they have something else planned?
@eltomo Yeah, not much of a spoiler if you've played through Breath of the Wild. (Spoilers if you haven't played Breath of the Wild) But it seems that by the end of the battle with Calamity Ganon that all four of your friends have died. Link could have been potentially injured and was thrown in a cryogenic chamber to sleep for 100 years. Zelda's the only one that is a little questionable. It seems she was also trapped in time as she had sealed herself and Ganon away from everything for the 100 year gap. The battle must have been pretty epic as most of Hyrule was left uninhabited and the large guardians were all but destroyed as well. Looking forward to this game, just questioning slightly if it will pack enough content to justify the $60 price tag.
Part of me wants to play this and another part of me doesn't. I'm not a fan of the genre, but if it fills in some BotW backstory, lets you play as other characters from the world, improves on BotW combat with more unique monsters and boss fights, then yeah I might like it.
But also... do I want to know more of the backstory? Part of the fun of BotW was exploring the abandoned civilization and having no idea what happened. The time depth and the mystery is compelling and it makes you want to know more, but when you do know more it's not as good as just the mystery.
Why didn't Nintendo just prepare a Direct? This, Pikmin deluxe, a couple of indies that have been announced for about 2 weeks, the whole 16-minutes Mario stuff as the mid-highlight, other middle road games like Jurassic World Evolution, Override 2, and I'm pretty sure there might be 1 or 2 more games coming soon that haven't been revealed like how Paper Mario was announced.
The 6-minute video sure looks like it WAS part of a Direct and when that Direct didn't happen it was taken and just saved to be uploaded alone. It even feels it was the "one more thing".
Weird weird choices.
@k8sMum yes they can be played solo, the fire emblem warriors had rpg elements such as leveling up and buying weapons
I was always wanting a preeuel game, but in a musou style ... that makes totally sense to me. It was a huge war that happened 100 years ago, and what better way to tell it than a musou type game.
@graysoncharles That’s likely not correct. While this technically is the second Hyrule Warriors, the two games are not linked. However it is directly linked to Breath of the Wild. But just because of that, it’d be silly of them to not call the next Zelda game from this Koei studio by the same name— it’s already been established.
@Nico07 Have you seen how damn gorgeous Luigi’s Mansion 3 is? The Switch can deliver very nice visuals, with good art direction, actually.
@Sir_Ronson BotW 2 is being saved for Zelda’s 35th anniversary, so it will probably be next year’s holiday must-own.
I’m also guessing there will be a Zelda HD compilation trilogy of: Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword.
LAMO at the people "ThErEs NoTHiNg ThIS HoLiDaY SeAsOn!"
After all these announcements I think I have a pretty good idea of how Nintendo's E3 Direct would have shaped up. Still curious as to what their big November title will be.
@Antraxx777 no ocarina of majora? booooooo
@RupeeClock thanks for sharing
@thesilverbrick hahahahah you are funny
Nintendo's upcoming first party Switch lineup:
> Sep: Super Mario 3D All-Stars
> Oct: Mario Kart Live, Pikmin 3 DX, Super Mario Bros 35 (lol)
> Nov: Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity
> Undated: Bravely Default 2 (maybe delayed?)
It's a pretty decent lineup all things considered. The only difference is that the biggest seller is a port collection that is launching in September rather than November.
I woke up thinking it was DLC to Botw but only to later find out it was just a Warriors game with a Botw story.
It honestly turned me off cause I really find those types of games boring. But I hope other people enjoy.
This year has been pretty underwhelming for me.
Ok, I'm with you fellers.
@TG16_IS_BAE That is exactly what I felt like, it was a button mash-a-thon. I am sure the games combat is much much deeper than that and I just didn't give it a chance. I like this BOTW story line so I may give this a shot and try to pay more attention to detail on how everything works. But I still feel it is probably just not the type of game I enjoy. I just love Zelda and we get so few games every console from that property and it kills me that I can't get into some of the ones that are available.
@Jashin Nintendo's 2020 has never really been in trouble lol
@westman98
Let's face it that is a pretty weak HOLIDAY lineup. When maybe the top release out of all of them is a collection of old albeit great games that a lot of the audience has already played you know things are a bit slow. That there isn't a blockbuster new release mentioned so far is a bit disappointing. I guess some would consider this new Hyrule Warrior game to fill that bill, for me it doesn't.
Warriors games have never held my interest. The one I played the most of was Fire Emblem Warriors. But they just get really repetitive.
And I've played entries for several of my favorite IP, Gundam, Fire Emblem, and of course Zelda. I always like them for a few hours... and then just lose interest.
Boring, I find the dynasty warriors games pretty linear 😒😒, hard pass for me
Oh hell yes!!! I love Hyrule Warriors.
Thank you Nintendo.
Ah, it's times like this that I love being a gamer. Awesome news!
@Bermanator calamity ganon is just a phantom ganon the real one ganondorf is sealed underneath the castle.
Would’ve preferred Fire Emblem Warriors 2
Eh I don't like musou games, so I'll be passing on this one. But you can bet I'll be on the Zelda wiki to read the lore!
I tried with both Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors. I just hate musou games. They are so boring and repetitive. HARD pass.
The pros: Interesting concept and very surprising that Nintendo allowed someone to essentially make a prequel to one of Nintendo’s most revered games. Also, neat that you can play as the champions, and the graphic style is retained.
The cons: it’s a koei Tecmo game, and Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition was a notably bad port. So bad, that it launched with portable mode being 1080p on a 720p screen. Glaring oversight, that tells me they rush things.
Hopefully they took better care here.
not into it, worried about stuff like persona 4 and final fantasy 7
Imagine an alternate reality where they revealed to everyone this WAS Zelda Breath of the Wild 2... lol. Welp I'm glad they haven't forgotten about it.
Anyway, that was a really good informative video, I wanted this to be on a presentation so bad
And the game itself? As a fan of Zelda: BoTW I'm so excited! I have never been so excited on a Warriors game before, and in this one they've been actually working with Nintendo, which makes it more promising
It's also coming earlier than what I thought seconds before reading into it, this should be a good harbinger to Zelda's 35th Anniversary
It was a swerve. Nintendo put one over on all of us!
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/07/no_zelda_breath_of_the_wild_2s_voice_work_isnt_complete#comments
@HobbitGamer This is one of those cases where I think getting some context on the calamity 100 years after the fact (which I do know about from BotW trailers) might be handy.
@Beaucine That's kinda what I was worried about. While I've heard BotW isn't nearly as story-heavy as some previous Zelda entries (the irony is I've played all the rest of the main series in some form barring Four Swords Adventures), a plot still definitely exists. I've done my best to have as little spoiled as possible lol.
Pretty cool news, I'll definitely be picking this up.
My only concern is that with it being a BotW prequel and with the original Hyrule Warriors still being a $60 port on Switch is that they'll remove characters. That or the worst possible outcome, it's like FE Warriors, which was bad solely because of all the clones and lack of unique fighting styles. Even outside of Smash it's impossible to avoid Marth clones.
This was FINE. Thanks Aonuma for not allowing nintendo bigwigs to interfere with your job ♡♡♡ and thanks for rescuing this year with a good nintendo release
Happy to persevere with one of the worst genres and styles of gameplay in the history of games just to experience the story.
Hype! Really looking forward to this. Made me think of LIS: Before the Storm, where no matter what you do it's not going to be a happy ending.
I hope there will be some sort of Diablo3 style drop in/out online option. That would be awesome.
Never been hyped for a DW game before this and I bought the original HW. The setting and plot really helps, though. November 20th can't come soon enough.
@RiasGremory I'm not really much of a Zelda fan, but thanks for the info.
No one's gonna comment on how this game is T rated and BotW is E10+? Yeah, the first HW was T rated, but this one is meant to look like BotW.
@russell-marlow But they don't really wait. Of course, normal enemies don't act that much, but stronger enemies usually attack your bases and make your troops flee. In harder difficulties you require to manage several characters to stop them, especially when stronger enemies appear.
@Henmii It could, but since it wasn't even addressed in BotW, I really doubt they will do that. Maybe as bonus in other game modes, but during the main campaing it would feel like a stretch.
Maybe they're gonna pull a Doctor Who and save freeze the Champions in time and travel back in time during BotW2 to save them!
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey
@ryancraddock I'm having trouble finding a physical copy of Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition...should I settle for digital or will Nintendo eventually reprint more physical copies?
@KidBoruto It isn't a limited release or anything so there should be plenty of copies - if initial stock sells out, more should be shipped out eventually.
Have you tried all the options listed here? 🙂
@nhSnork Definitive Edition added Zelda and Link BotW costumes. Though, considering this version will be fighting with both the Sheikah Slate and her Goddess Powers, I'd say this is probably the one to really count.
@Joeynator3000 ? You mean that it's not a crossover like Hyrule Warriors was?
@link3710 in Zelda terms, probably not - it focuses on a single game. It may still qualify as a Zelda/Dynasty Warriors crossover... unless we argue that the latter's gameplay is its own subgenre by now. After all, Bamco made Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave in a similar vein and with no involvement from Omega Force.
@nhSnork Lol, that wasn't a question on my part. My question was if that was why Joeynator was so upset.
@Bunkerneath Very true. The events of BOTW happened because Link was “defeated”.
Deja vu from the time game..
