With yet another week down - this time bringing with it a new Switch update, the LEGO NES console and an official Animal Crossing Instagram account, no less - it's finally time to sit back and chat about our weekend gaming plans.
Members of Team Nintendo Life have done just that below, and we'd love for you to join in via our poll and comment sections. Enjoy!

My copy of Paper Mario: The Origami King arrived yesterday and as soon as I wrap up The Last of Us Part II I'll be diving in to check it out. I've only ever played the original on N64 and The Thousand-Year Door on GameCube - and that was probably about 15 years ago now - so I'm actually intrigued to see what a modern Paper Mario game is like, even if some fans of the series aren't happy with it these days.
Elsewhere, with a shiny Wailord being available in Pokémon Sword and Shield for a limited time, I might try my luck and hop on to see if I can find one. That's a big might, though, because I imagine it'll take more time than it's worth to stumble across one. Have a good one, folks.

I'll admit, I don't have the best track record when it comes to the Paper Mario series. I've played them all, but haven't always seen 'em through. The last one I had a proper crack at was Paper Mario: Sticker Star on the 3DS and the sticker concept got to me in the end. When Paper Mario: Color Splash arrived on the Wii U, I moved on rather quickly. Now we've got yet another generation of Paper Mario to play - this time on the Nintendo Switch - and once again I've signed up. Will I be able to see it through? I'm not really sure, so I'll give you an update next week. Determination intensifies!
Apart from this, there's not much else on my plate this weekend. Maybe some Donkey Kong Country? I've already run through it once, so I might play it again. Maybe I'll check out some Shin Megami Tensei on the NSO Super Famicom service while I'm at it.

The massive heatwave currently above my beloved country means that playing anything with a power supply is a risky proposition. Choosing a life of perilous gamble I hope to continue Agent Morgan’s surreal investigation in Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise, impose the will of the Emperor of all Mankind in Warhammer 40,000 Mechanicus and continue my delightful retro platforming adventures on Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2.
My game of the week is obviously Paper Mario: The Origami King. Every game in the series lives in the shadow of The Thousand-Year Door but I trust this new adventure will keep me entertained for the foreseeable future… Where is that Nintendo Direct, Zach?
As always, thanks for reading! Make sure to leave a vote in the poll above and a comment below with your gaming choices over the next few days...

Gonna end the main story of Xenoblade Chronicles: DE.
Dunno if gonna start future connected or YS VIII next!
I just finished up Catherine. Great little game. Perfect 9 hours long.
Now I’m playing Paper Mario.
Tempted buying Warhammer as well.
Back to work this week so haven’t accomplished much in the world of games. Played a bit of Mario world but feel like a curveball so mite set up my 360 and play a few random games. Take care everyone xx
Getting in another play through of Fire Emblem Three Houses. Probably play some games on Turbo Grafx 16 Mini and Neo Geo Mini.
I fear that I am nearing the end of YS VIII, so I will be holding back on progressing the story for a while, as I really don't want it to end! It really is an exemplary JARPG... I've been absolutely blown away by it. Is up there with Eternal Sonata and Tales Of Hearts R on my list of best ever RPGs. Have a great weekend, and take care out there.
I will be playing Dark Souls II and probably some Donkey Kong Country.
Playing some Luigi's Mansion 3, Great game..
Just about finished with Grisaia Phantom Trigger 02 and haven't decided what I'm going to start next tonight yet. Still doing my daily tasks in Animal Crossing and playing a bit of Project Diva on the side.
Playing Epic Mickey 2 on PS Vita
Tales of the Abyss and occasionally Burnout Paradise Remastered.
Still Xenoblade for me! Maybe a bit of Super Mario 3D World since I’ve set up my Wii U again.
The final stage of Curse of the Moon 2 is up next. After the first four very easy levels the difficulty has truly levelled up now. Other than that I'll be dabbling in Slay the Spire and Death Stranding.
Ninjala, Overwatch, and Mario Kart! Been having lots of fun with Ninjala in particular and it's being updated regularly.
Last night I beat the 3rd palace in Persona 5. I’m also on the 3rd chapter of Steins Gate.
It’s my birthday today so there might not be much gaming time.
Resident Evil (the original one) and Final Fantasy IX, both on my RG350M.
Animal Crossing New Horizons All Day Long. 😁
Keep Time Travelling each 3 days to regrow my fruit trees to pay off the Final debt 2.5 million Bells.
And at the same time my Terraforming project has been started.
I will relocate every buildings except Resident Service to the beach area while the main island should be clear from any buildings and i can start to add some levels and shaping my island.
Definetely very long project and i keep doing Time Travel for Time efficiency in playing. Don't put it until tomorrow if it can be done today.
Still playing Fire Emblem 3H (third run) but now with some Bravely Second on the side. Might play Luigi's Mansion 3 next as a break before starting Xenoblade.
I want to carry on with Mario+Rabbids, but instead...
This week I will be mostly
Trying to sleep
(because I have a newborn baby boy)
I’m supposed to be tackling my backlog but I’m on I Am Setsuna and finding it incredibly dull.
This weekend I will focus mostly on Paper Mario on Switch. Very enjoyable so far!
Neon Abyss... totally addicted
Finishing bloodstained and earthbound. Dont know what yo play next. Any suggestions? Should I marathon mario platformers, RPGs or something like kirby or yoshi
Still finishing Ys VIII (it´s longer than I thought, but very pleased for that!), and also replaying Mario Odyssey from time to time. It´s always a pleasure.
Once I´m done with Ys, I´ll dive into Origami King, but I don´t know when that will be, at this pace XD. Anyway, happy to see everyone is enjoying Paper Mario, it looks like so much fun!
Have a nice summer, guys!
CrossCode 13hrs in.. then the origami king😘..
If I check out SMT, it'll be resuming/restarting the translated rom (albeit with clearer conscience now😆) - it's not the game you can savour well with a language barrier in the way (and my command of Japanese is still in its infancy). But my actual plans particularly involve 999 this weekend - finally on the way to the true ending, I'm even hoping to wrap it up today. The flowchart confused me into expecting a lot more work left to do, but turns out I've already unlocked most of the sequences and the interface just kept crossing them out again whenever I switched to a different path.😆 Here's to the proper survival rate this time because the previous ending (required to unlock the last) had a particular gut punch in store for me.
Otherwise, same old - some Xenoblades, Bioshock, Burnout, likely some Eternia and Mary Skelter on top, the rest up to time and mood. I even revisited Tallowmere last night - while the apparent lack of unlockables and ultimate focus on little but the high score has long left it a problematic contestant in my evergrowing backlog (probably best suited for multiplayer, but my co-op sessions are much rarer now and still Overcooked), the game is still pretty damn fun otherwise.
Paper mario the origami king. Loving it so far
I'm playing Trails of Cold Steel 3. First Trails game, and after reading up on the back story I'm now really into it. Still quite early on so a long way to go with this one.
Getting close to the end of FE Birthright now too but probably won't finish that until next weekend.
Just made the final payment on my house in Animal Crossing New Horizons. I am still super happy with the game. However, after more than 200 hours, and almost all of the game play discovered, I am starting to think about starting a new game: I did buy Firewatch on sale a while ago, maybe I will start that.
Happy gaming, everyone!
My copy of Friends of Mineral Town arrived Thursday, so that's my main thing right now. Brilliant little game that I played so much of on the GBA. The remake is very nice so far - I wasn't too hot on the new art style but it's grown on me since I started playing.
I'll definitely get in a couple of Ring Fit sessions as well, and I've got knitting projects to attend to.
@gaga64 Congratulations, get all the sleep you can!
Dark Souls Remastered. My wife is playing Paper Mario: The Origami King.
Animal crossing and Forager on Switch.
Pillars of eternity and Dragons dogma on Xbox.
@gaga64 congratulations!! And to all the YS VIII players I read, it's so great right? Finished it last year and still miss that game. It's in my top 3 list of best games ever. Now waiting for Ys IX. Playing some Pokemon in the meantime this weekend
Xenoblade, and paper Mario for me 😁
Just finished Catherine and Octopath this week, so debating on what to start next. Leaning toward Firewatch or possibly Deadly Premonition 1.
I just started Graceful Explosion Machine this week, so I'll mostly be concentrating on that. I'm still riding the wave of combo-based madness since I finished their recent game, Super Crush K.O a couple weeks ago. Also, if I finish it, it will mark as my 600th game that I've beaten since the start of 2009. Yeah, I'm kind of a dork by keeping a list, but it's seriously helped me with my backlog, and it's fun for me to look back and reminisce on what I've played.
Aside from that, during the week I started and finished a little puzzler called HOOK, that I picked up on sale for 60 cents. It's very minimalist in design, but the puzzles are very well constructed with a lot of thought put into them. It's got this nice chill nature soundtrack that makes it perfect for relaxing to for a couple hours while it picks your brain.
My wife and I also played through Captain Commando on the Capcom Beat em Up Bundle last night. It was a super fun chaotic romp, and I'm really interested in checking the other titles out in the package soon.
I’ve recently completed project warlock. Good to see lots of people playing YS VIII. Still working my way through this. I’ve been wondering what game to play alongside it, but I may continue with just this game until it’s done. It’s very addictive.
I'm kind of at that awkward spot between games, I was trying to start FE Radiant Dawn a few weeks ago but I had to give up on that since my friends visited and I don't usually like returning to games if I have to drop them for more than few days. Kinda trying to get into Live-a-Live at the moment but the gameplay supplementing the story as opposed to other way around isn't really doing much for me, the music does keep me coming back for it but I dunno if I can actually finish it, I managed to do the western and pre-historic campaigns.
Mostly I'm just focusing on my SRPG Studio project.
Astral Chain this weekend. I'd bought it last year and didn't play more than a couple hours, but I've got back around to it now. I really like its vibe and combat is satisfying.
I've pumped in over 110 hours into ACNH within a very small number of days. The other game I'm playing is Hunting Simulator. It's on sale and after some gold coins spent just 87p to buy it. This game has had a LOT of flack. I was curious since I enjoyed a fishing sim (Ultimate...), and so I thought traipsing around the woods would be interesting. It is! and it was! Incredibly hard at first, but once you get used to the environment and use common sense - it's exilerating. Infact it is so good that I wish there was a similar FPS combat game. The care and investment needed to get a kill with positioning and scopes - Then making sure you kill hitting vital organs only, really scratches that sniper itch. It's not arcade, hard at first, but most deffinately a good (minus bullet drop & wind), gun game.
Is there some kind of Ys VIII appreciation month going on that I didn’t know about? Nice work, everyone.
Personally, still making my way through FE Awakening - and absolutely loving it.
About 4 hours into Deadly Premonitions 2, so far it’s exactly what I wanted! (Minus the frame rate and lack of inverted aim)
I’m 25 hours into Persona Q2 on the 3DS and am loving it. About halfway through the third dungeon.
Other than that I’m chipping away at Ori and Will of the Wisps on Xbox, God of War and Detroit on the PS4.
Paladins for some multiplayer mayhem, and I need to return to YS VIII to finish the story. Then probably should put some time into my backlog.
Dragon Quest 11 S and maybe some Paper Mario 😊
I've been having an absolute blast decorating my house in Animal Crossing. I'm also gonna try to get all of the endings of Curse of the Moon and then get Curse of the Moon 2. I might start on Paper Mario Color Splash as well. Gonna try to finish that before I get Origami King.
Dragon Quest XI S, loving every moment of it. Definitely my favorite RPG on the Switch, and one of the best games on the system IMO.
Playing The Origami King since yesterday and got reminded how much I suck at EVERY kind of sliding puzzles.
So this game is one of the most hardcore ones I've ever played. 😭
Paper Mario, and it's absolutely one of the best games on the Switch. I'm already giving it a 9, but haven't played it enough yet to give it a full score.
I love the world, I love the Toads and their humor. I love the humor overall in the game. It's surprisingly challenging in it's puzzles and battles. I don't miss exp at all. There is a LOT to search for, unlock, and do in the game. It runs nicely in handheld mode. Motion controls are optional. I actually haven't found any bugs or rarities.
The more I play the game, the more I disagree with the review Nintendolife gave it.
Playing Bug Fables and I love it.
DKC and picking up some missing moons in Super Mario Odyssey
@Quimbolas both choices are amazing, I loved Ys viii!
Playing Pokémon Y on a new file
Playing Animal Crossing and Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town. Might try Orgami King if I can get my son to let me play it. 😂
I was on the fence about Paper Mario but I took the plunge and so far I am thoroughly enjoying it.
The controversial battle system is a lot better then I was expecting. Much more fun when you are actually playing it yourself as opposed to just watching videos of it.
Much better then Sticker Star ( haven't played Colour Splash ).
Happy I took the plunge.
Finished “To the Moon” last weekend so back into the Witcher. I’ve so far played 85 hours and I don’t even think I’m halfway through.
I’m also giving the 3DS a bit of love, as I’m slowly progressing with “Mario and Luigi Paper Jam Bros”.
Mostly origami king. But im also playing borderlands 1 and marvel ultimate alliance 3 strictly for an avengers only run( original 4).
007: Quantum of Solace (Games For Windows) - Back on multiplayer this weekend.
Fallout 3 (Games For Windows) - After taking a few days off, getting back into it this weekend.
Uno & Friends (Windows Phone) - Heading to the inlaws this weekend, so this will def get some play time.
Astral Chain, Burnout Paradise, Duke Nukem 3D.
Have a great weekend!
Just picked up the Contra & Castlevania collections for £3.99 each!
This will be another Xenoblade Chronicles weekend. I think I'm almost at the end of Chapter 14 and want to really make some progress on the story. My goal is to finish the game next weekend before I'm out of town for a few days, but I'm unsure if that'll actually happen. XD
Also, as Gastly Community Day is tomorrow, there will be some Pokemon Go this weekend. Not too much though; a heat advisory kicks in later.
Have a wonderful weekend! Happy gaming!
Edit: It's ironic that my physical copy of Ys VIII arrived this week, and the game is getting so much love in the comments!
Surprisingly I’m playing far cry 3 again after picking it up for £2.50 on the PS store!
Since the Switch is an absolute barren wasteland right now, I'll be 100% playing Ghost of Tsushima!
Ghost of Tsushima all weekend long plus some Deadly Premonition 2. I'll probably start Paper Mario the Origami King on Tuesday when it arrives.
Gotta admit, everything I was into for the last few weeks has been put aside for Ghost and Tsushima and Paper Mario.
Still checking in on Animal Crossing once a day though
Origami King while redownloading a bunch of XB1 games to my XB1.
Started Ni No Kuni this week. I'm a massive Ghibli fan but had put it off for a while as I'm a bit of a rpg noob but the first couple of hours have been amazing. Love it!
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled again.
My Paper Mario pre-order wasn't delivered as expected, so I'm trying out various Sega games and arcade ports on the Saturn and Dreamcast consoles I just fixed up.
Snagged SNIPER ELITE 3 and it's fantastic. So that and some DKC for sure.
I am playing through Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix, and The Outer Worlds (while the kids are in bed).
I started streets of rogue and Duke nukem this week. But after beating the start two campaigns of Duke have been putting more time into streets of rogue.
I decided to try out Caretaker, which was a mistake. Despite a few clever jumpscares, the game is dull and slow as you trudge through barren environments. Oh, and no inverted look.
So switched to Into the Dead 2 for some fast-paced horror action.
@Quimbolas YS VIII is such a good follow up to pick. The Future Connected Story is like 8 hours at the briskest tho, I'd just run thru it quick first or you'll prob never play it. I ended up playing YS VIII (on hard mode) for like 90 hrs.
The Origami King arrived yesterday and I’ve so far put about 5 hours into it. Despite sounding like a broken record, I’m very much in the camp of ‘the first two are incredible, with TTYD bordering on a masterpiece’. SPM was really great for what it was and then Sticker Star came along and was a horrible mess of a game that utterly missed the mark in almost every aspect. After that, Color Splash was an underwhelming but overall playable and at times fun little romp through the Paper Mario universe that I have no desire to ever play again.
So, TOK? I remember starting up CS and after a couple hours knowing EXACTLY how I felt about it and how I would feel about it with time. And I was right. It was fine. This one, though, after 5 hours is feeling kind of special.
Maybe it’s the tempered expectations but so far I am having so much fun with the latest Paper Mario. The writing is consistently top tier, the music is incredible, it looks beautiful, the world is fun and rewarding to explore, there’s a new idea packed into every new screen. It kind of feels like TTYD had a baby with CS and thus TOK was born. I don’t see it surpassing either of the first two, or maybe even the third, mainly due to a repetitive battle system that isn’t outright offensive but does begin to grate all too quickly. But going in, knowing what to expect, I have been thoroughly surprised and I can’t wait to get back to it after work
Absolutely nothing. The sun is out, why the hell would I be indoors playing games?
@Ooyah I'm playing memory of celceta now on the Vita. About half way through and really enjoying it. How does viii compare?
Neon Abyss for me. Superb. Really loving it.
I'm nearly "finished" with Witcher
Debating on jumping into Divinity directly after it, or playing The Messenger to give myself a "break"
@Clammy Easy. Make yourself a picnic, head to the local park and pop a squat with your Switch. You can still game outdoors.
I kid I kid...
@Brodieman
I really enjoyed Memories too, but VIII, in my opinion, surpasses it in every single way. The story, characters, dialogue, and the sense of mystery and suspense are all simply outstanding. The whole thing just builds in an incredible fashion, and the setting is brilliantly realised. Heartily recommended if you liked Memories, no doubt. I was feeling a bit "burnt out" on JRPGs, but this has had me utterly enthralled for 80 hours so far.
@shonenjump86 I love both of those mini consoles. So much good stuff to play on both.
Paper Mario. And so far it's ok,
@Thewiseone82 yes, currently playing R Type on the Turbo Grafx. I’m not the best person when it comes to shooters but I really like that one.
@gaga64 The game of parenthood, the most challenging, satisfying game of all.
Congrats on the new addition!
Zombie army Trilogy and mudrunner
Both online multiplayer co-op, best way to play them
After wavering, I decided to splurge on Paper Mario because this year has been **** and I deserve it. I'm enjoying it more than expected thus far. Kind of reminds me of Okami for some reason.
I’ll be starting up Paper Mario!
On the Xbox front I’ve recently started Deliver Us the Moon.
Happy weekend everyone!
Going to try and finish Darksiders 1 this weekend (about 12 hours in now and think I am near the end). After that ends I will most likely move to some sort of puzzle game in my backlog as it's been a long time since I have booted one up. I also bought Paper Mario but will prob wait a few weeks to boot it up.
This weekend is all about Paper Mario: The Origami King, and of course some Donkey Kong Country.
@gaga64 Congrats on the new Koopaling!
Persona 5 Royal. Just made it to the 3rd semester. It's great!
God Of War on PS4 - sorry Nintendo
Diablo III (Switch) Working on my monk
@Krull Well, in just some weeks Falcom announced Ys IX and Origins for the Switch. People have been talking a lot about the series in general, and the eighth in particular. So it shouldn't be a surprise there's so many people playing it now xD
In my case, I've been thinking of giving it a try for a long time, but all those talks made me decide to take the plunge already. And no kidding, it's one of the best things I've done this year! Lol. Ys VIII is everything I look for in an adventure/ARPG game.
I'm playing Jump Rope Challenge daily, sometimes twice daily when its on a theme and sound effect I like such at the beach with waves, the mushrooms with water drips, the night city, and The Sound of Music (the Alps looking one). Also playing Kingdom New Lands, Burnout Paradise (starting to think this might be my favorite Burnout, but showtime doesn't compare to proper crash challenges with goals and puzzling intersections), Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town, Just Dance 2020, Super Mario Maker 2 (great ninji active right now!), Famicom Wars on the Japanese Famicom app, and Top Run (great music). Oh, and I love that Burnout Paradise has Depeche Mode and Swervedriver in it!
Funny how thousand year door popped up here because I just booted up that game earlier this week to hype myself for the new paper mario. I am such a sap
@gaga64 congratulations 😊
Lego Batman (Wii)
Kirby's Dreamland 3 (Wii Virtual Console)
Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga + Bowser's Minions (3DS)
Landstalker (Switch)
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Switch)
Dr. Mario World (Mobile)
PS4- Bioshock 2
Switch- Pinball FX3
Paper Mario Origami King and maybe some more Huntdown or Divinity OS2
Paper Mario (about 3h - smiling every minute), Animal Crossing (still playing about 30 min per day), Asphalt 9 (since feb 2020 - great underrated arcade car racing) , Xenoblade DE (about 2-3h in a week, disappointed so much, but love XC2 - about 300h gameplay)
Ring Fit Adventure, Moto GP 20 and will fit some F1 2020 in on my Xbox.
I recently started playing Octopath Traveler and I have also been been playing Bug Fables. Really enjoy the gameplay and music of both games
More xenoblade! Then future connected and when i am some day dome with that... i guess catherine full body
@kingbk : you think my other half would be happy sitting outdoors while I ignored them and played games?
@Benji80 Deku Deals makes it easier imo...
Paper Mario All day!
When I 100% Paper Mario Then I'll switch back to Mario Maker 2.
