Information has been coming in fast about Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury these last few days. With less than a month until launch, it's Nintendo first big release of 2021 (sorry Buddy Mission: Bond) and we've had a good look at what Bowser's Fury is bringing, alongside new pre-order bonuses and even a sticker game across the official website.
Among this, we've been able to directly compare just how 3D World runs on Switch in comparison to the original Wii U release. We've only got trailer footage from the Switch to rely on currently, but as you can see in the video, if the trailer is to be believed, it's a noticeably faster experience than before.
Featuring some changes to the camera during gameplay, the Switch version looks set to be a more refined experience, and we cannot wait to give it a try.
Update: Nintendo has formally confirmed that the game does indeed have speed changes:
In addition, the moving speed is up or, wall climbing and of Nekomario, longer flight time of jumped and may become improve the operability from the Wii U version has been.
Will you be buying Super Mario 3D World next month? Are you happy with the new changes? Let us know down below.

Interesting. It looks like they’ve sped up character movement and not the whole game. This makes me want it that little bit more.
Honestly, even just this speed increase sounds like a nice reason to revisit this game. Not for full price of course but that's where the online and Bowser's Fury come in to justify that part more, to a certain extent at least.
I will not buy 3D World at Day One, maybe several months later as i still want to build my PS3 & PS4 games library quickly during year 2021.
The faster run is a nice enhancement
If I'm buying the game again, don't make it faster for me to complete Nintendo! What was wrong with original speed?
@beazlen1 thank god though. 3D world played like Mario (and gang) were running through molasses. I remember complaining about that when it came out haha and users told me I was wrong
Wow the Wii U speed looks pedestrian compared to the Switch Speed, and nice fast acceleration. I'll be playing this all the way through again on Switch, fantastic game.
Was the game speed linked to frame-rate?
This is good news, one of my biggest bugbears with 3D World was that it felt far too slow, even with the run button constantly held down it still felt frustrating.
When I saw it was getting ported I pretty much dismissed it in my head as its probably my least favourite of all the 3D games but this and Bowsers Fury does seem like a game changer to be fair to Nintendo
I’m ready to replay this with the kids on switch
Well this is a very welcome addition. Extra speed, new content and an Online mode. I wonder if it will get a resolution boost as well. Either way, this is how you do a port.
@Mince Both the Wii U version and the Switch version run in 60fps so that can't be the cause
I guess they just decided to make it a little bit faster
Considering that this title and Yoshi's Woolly World are the only games I played constantly on the Wii U, I can't wait for this title...but I'm not sure if I'm ready to pay $60 again for it. Honestly wish that nintendo would lower prices to $40 for older games, but that will never seem to happen.
It was super slow, I welcome the change. Maybe when it's 50% off, if ever.
The speed of the game has certainly been.. embiggened 😉
Will this help me beat the evil CHAMPIONS ROAD section faster?? haha
Gosh...THAT level was the WORST/toughest ive ever faced I think...
one Christmas I dedicated myself to finishing it, was so happy when I finally did (but only as Toad)
will 100% buy this, already preordered on day 1, its a brilliant game and worth it even without bowsers fury just to be able to play on the go
@Toads-Friend yep I think it might be the hardest ending level. I managed it with Luigi and Peach although using Peach feels like cheating. I'm going to have to go back and try again with the others now... Such a good level.
I forgot about Buddy: Bond Mission. I'm thinking about getting it, but I wonder why it is not making it out west.
"We've only got trailer footage from the Switch to rely on currently, but as you can see in the video, if the trailer is to be believed, it's a noticeably faster experience than before"
@Terra: It actually is confirmed on Nintendo's Japanese website here: https://topics.nintendo.co.jp/article/ca5a68e7-cefb-4085-8ef8-869ad2068bd7
You'll have to run it through Google translate but it says the movement speed and wall climbs are faster, the long jump is longer and that the general control is improved.
This is great as my only complain of the Wii U version was that the gameplay felt a little sluggish.
It could be enough to transform 3D world from a great game to a huge game.
But my god, are we gonna sweat in Champion's Road (the final stage). It's already on Wii U one the hardest level of Mario history.
This ain't gonna help 😅
I havent played the original, so for me its like playing a new game 🤣
@Toads-Friend @beazlen1 I’ve beaten it properly as Mario and Toad (I also took some spare wiimotes along for the ride with Toad, so Luigi and Peach joined in for the flagpole, with only seconds left on the clock).
I reckon the final level of Galaxy 2 might be harder, but it’s a coin toss and probably depends on how tired I am on any given day.
In addition, the moving speed is up or, wall climbing and of Nekomario, longer flight time of jumped and may become improve the operability from the Wii U version has been.
huh? what the heck did I just read????
Already preordered:)
@Bearzilla823 "Movement and wall climbing speed is up, long jump is increased in length and general control is improved over the Wii U version"
Urge to double dip rising...
@Yosher That's what I am thinking as well. Still have the original and my WiiU is still hooked up (making my way through Metroid Prime Trilogy, so good), but with quality of life improvements like this and online mode with friend, I may need to buy this game.
@Spanjard enjoy it in ten years or so then.
Together with online, the snapshot mode and Nowser's Fury this is certainly worth the price.
@Mince Would not matter in this case. Wii U version was 60fps, same with the Switch. Nintendo has gone back and manually increased the speed of characters and tweaked the jumping.
This was a brilliant game on Wii U for introducing children to Mario and 3D game navigation. Speeding it up is going to make it harder for kiddies. Good news for the big kids though.
@gcunit Totally agree. I think this game should have an speed selection option. This game and the 99% of the games out there of course.
Speed is one of the biggest barriers non gamers faces when trying a game.
I remember back the days of Street Fighter II Turbo or even Starcraft, allowing people to choice the game speed.
I miss that in all Nintendo games. And I think that it's one of the key features from Mario Kart 50cc.
"Nekomario"
Haha is that what they call him???
Cute
It's crazy that Nintendo would make it faster. You'd think they'd keep it slow for the casual. It will make the game even more enjoyable
@Clyde_Radcliffe thanks for that legible translation. I'm glad to hear the controls are improved over Wii U. I've never heard anybody else talk on this before, but I've always thought there was something not quite right with the controls on this game. Precision platforming just wasnt possible like it was in other Mario games.
I actually wanted the character movement sped up a bit in the Wii U game when I first booted it up but I then got used to it. This is actually ideal for me.
Already pre-ordered.
"the Wii U version has been"
With all the improvements and new content, the Wii U version really is a has been.
By taking into consideration just what people are commenting about the game in every piece of news that has been posted, I think it'll be safe to bet that it's gonna be a best seller
I can't wait for this game to come out! I always played as luigi, peach felt so sluggish but she is very useful in some levels and I think this will solve that issue
@redpanda0310 @Bizaster I think Neko is the Japanese word for 'cat'.
Intentional or just a crappy WiiU emulator?
I can't wait for SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD!!! MEOW
I wonder if it ever came to anybody's mind at Nintendo to maybe think about rewarding Wii U owners as opposed to practically constantly "punishing" them. I mean, we held out during the worst times, invested in their failed hardware, bought their games. What do we get? Not much new to play on Switch (in terms of 1st party games I mean), because of the sea of full price re-releases of Wii U games with minimal upgrades. Upgrades we will miss out on if we resist paying full price for something we played before in a 95-99% identical version. I know it's not trivial, but really, maybe, they could just try to come up with something where Wii U owners could feel just a little bit rewarded, for a change.
The extra momentum effects all the jumps. Looks like they made it a little more free flowing and the prospect of being able to finish the levels in a different way does make me want it more.
@gergelyv I'll pray for you while you get ambushed by comments here.
Awesome. 3d world is my favorite 3d mario game (controversial, I know) but I will admit it did feel slow. Thankfully they sped this up but it looks like the increased speed doesn't mess with his jump distance, which I feared would screw up the balance and timing of the platforming.
Being a huge Sonic fan I'm all for making Mario faster! 😁
I loved the music in this game specifically a certain tune, but I don't know the name. Don't kmow if I'd play it again but I did love how it was a soft nod to SMB2 with the selection of characters and distinct abilities.
It appears if you pre-order the game digitally on the Nintendo UK store you still get sent the steelbook and stickers 😀
Paraphrased translations are better than word for word Google translations.
Just saying.
Has Nintendo said anything about taking advantage of online co op at all?
@StevenG lol just lol stupid is =stupid comments
@BlackPwr Both versions are 60 fps so no, they didn't increase the frame rate. They manually adjusted the speeds.
@Bearzilla823 thank u. I can't believe no one mentioned that before u did. I always read the first several comments to make sure no one has already said what i wanted to say. I almost made this comment, but kept reading a few more. I imagine that's how the comment directly translated, tho.
@Toads-Friend Yeah, that level sure is a rough one. I managed to beat it with every character, but it wasn’t easy.
I don't mind these changes, but I wish they'd put in a "classic mode" of sorts to give the players the option of playing it exactly like it was on Wii U. Well, as much as they can anyway. The Wii U has its own screen that can show different stuff from what's on the TV.
Honestly, these remakes are sounding like repeating old news again and again. Meanwhile, Bayonetta 3 and Metroid 4 is nowhere to be seen.
Extra speed will embiggen the gameplay experience with the joycon drifts.
Thx nintendo
I'm betting wiiu had an io bottleneck with the compression went encryption. Looking at it now it's just bizarre how it moved. It was clearly masking a technical limitation. Maybe it was held back due to miscast artifacting or something. We all forget gamepad off 5v was imperative now.
Also, that Google translation. Woof.
In my opinion 3D World is the best Mario game of all time. It nails everything great about every Mario game & more all wrapped up in one fantastic experience. It’s Nintendo at their best. Stoked to replay it this time in online coop.
I finished 3D world on Wii U, so there's not a chance in hell I would double dip and buy this game again at full price, even with the Bowser's fury DLC.
The improvements are great for new players though. I may reconsider at the inevitable price drop in the next 6 months or so. Also since my girlfriend hasn't played it yet and seemed to have shown interest in getting the game.
That's an interesting inclusion. It summons up the thought that they purposefully slowed the Wii U game to make it appeal to as wide an audience as possible (to push Wii U to a more casual audience that were not biting/nor ever really did). Now they have the "big" audience they wanted, they made it snappier and a little harder like perhaps they originally wanted.
@Chowdaire When I saw in the overview trailer where in the 1st level Mario's speed has been enhanced to the point Mario perfectly reaches the clearpipe with a longjump stomp on the Goomba.
I think its a good sign the changes came from a position of pre-existing knowledge of the game's mechanics, rather than an arbitrary speed boost without regard for the impact on the gameplay.
@FargusPelagius They might have just been conservative about not breaking the game or spending a lot of time rebalancing the mechanics, because of the situation the WiiU was in, that it needed a holiday 2013 game. In the original the moves like the long jump or the rolling long jump weren't tremendously effective, so I think they might be using this an excuse to rebalance the game.
@OorWullie Yeah, ik.
so they made it more easier...I didn't feel any problem with the original speed when I played the game before.
I don't know if people realize that in the WiiU version, Toad was way faster than the other characters, followed by Mario and Luigi, and Peach was crazy slow (but could float). This was pretty annoying when playing multiplayer since whoever was Toad was always waiting for others.
I'm guessing all four characters are now closer to or equal to the original Toad speed?
looks like the switch version is in 1080p 60fps.
thing i'm curious about is how they handle the Mic features from the wii-u version, there is no mic on the switch
@PALversusNTSC I hated all the gimmicks of the Wii u and its mic and second screen. Nintendo fanboys would defend these decisions and say these games couldn't be played anywhere without these features. Yet Im loving splatoon 2 without having a map... I loved Mario Kart 8 without having a huge horn to hit... and im sure Nintendo is going to figure out how to replace a mic.
Was waiting to see the awesomeness of Bowser’s Fury before I preordered... as I was a devout Wii U player hating to double dip. When I finally did preorder the other day... I missed out of reserving the Cat Peach amiibo. Which makes me a little bummed out.
I’d rather stick with the original creative vision.
Will this affect the length of the game significatively?
My only worry is that this will make an already easy game (final level excluded) even easier. Hoping this wont be the case.
This game looks very epic
@The_Pixel_King Omg new Simpson’s hit and run game confirmed???!!!
@Marios-love-child There are only two of this 3D-style classic Mario games though.
