Anybody else unable to claim gold points yet on their copy? I don’t recall having this error before. My switch tells me gold points are “not yet available” or some such.
This would be a fantastic advertisement for Mario Kart Live if Nintendo were inclined to reward the effort by licensing the video (or whatever the right legalese is for paying for the right to officially endorse / use is).
Does pre-ordering a physical version count for the purposes of this poll even though it asks “What will you be downloading?” If not, my apologies for bloating the AoC numbers.
Belated congratulations to a wonderful site that has created a lovely community of readers. You guys are one of the first places I check every morning. Thanks so much, NL — and here's to the next fifteen years (and beyond)!
If I invest in a second modern console (third if you count my New Nintendo 2DS XL), it will be the Xbox as a) I have a long-standing but deeply-felt resentment of Sony for both dethroning Nintendo and (worse yet) killing my beloved Sega; b) the Xbox seems to have the slight technical edge in the areas I care about; c) I love my Xbox 360; and d) the PS5 is just way too impossibly large.
But more likely than not, I will sit out this console war and wait for Switch 2.0.
I, somehow, never owned a DS or 3DS until last year, but I have loved my New Nintendo 2DS XL. So many fabulous games, and the dual screen / touchpad mechanic really is a wonderful way to game (and was used ingenuously by many developers). Very much not a bygone console for me!
Crash Bandicoot 2 (Switch) Ori and the Blind Forest (Switch) Journey of a Broken Circle (Switch) Vs. Excitebike (Switch) Yoshi's Crafted World (Switch) Duck Tales Remastered (Xbox 360) Fez (Xbox 360) NiGHTS into dreams... (Xbox 360)
Not buying anything right away, but No More Heroes is a definite down-the-road purchase. Maybe Pikmin 3 to try the franchise out, though 2 sounds to be more my speed.
I love reviving games on great-but-under-appreciated consoles for larger audiences, but I think I am going to hold off on this one. I would be a Day 1 investor if they brought Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure to Switch, though!
Oh shoot I voted backwards, I think. Reading comprehension....
But the percentage divide is not consistent for me, in any event. I go in phases where I favor one or the other mode (one of the beauties of Switch is affording me that luxury). It also depends a lot on the game, for me — Breath of the Wild was almost entirely played in docked mode, Captain Toad almost all handheld, Steamworld Dig 2 a healthy mix, etc.
I loved GoNNER, but I can’t justify jumping into GoNNER2 immediately at time of release when I have so many other games (including finally getting Fire Emblem: Three Houses with the Prime Day discount and Horace with pre-order discount) to play through. Here’s to hoping it’s discounted in a few months.
For more historically responsible consumers than myself who do not need to forsake picking up a title this week in long of prior eShop profligacy, GoNNER2 will definitely be worth it if it’s anything like the original.
I asked for this review! I will absolutely jump on this. Looks fantastic. Update Pre-order discount pushed me over the edge, notwithstanding my backlog. Can’t wait to try this out.
@PickledKong64 Totally fair to find them not playable with the benefit of modern perspective, but I think the idea with these polls is to reflect not just on how they look to a newcomer or someone revisiting them today, but what they represented to gamers / the system when they came out. Both games were genre-defining titles, in their time. So while I would agree I am much more eager to pick up several lower-ranked (or omitted) entries than those two, I think it's legitimate that they were given such pride of place.
SO many Wrestling and Skateboarding games. I guess that's how the votes shook out (which is likely a rather charming reflection of where the gamers on this site were when N64 was the console under the television set), but it is clearly not a reflection of the best content on this system. Games like Jet Force Gemini, 1080 Snowboarding, Kirby 64, Glover, etc. all — to my mind — are a better representation of the breadth of gameplay N64's wee-but-wonderful library had to offer.
Loved Golf Peaks. Great little puzzler with a fantastically zen soundtrack.
Kamiko is a very solid hack-and-slash with good replay value (since 3 distinct playable characters).
Bury my love can be a bit slow; but it is poignant, sadly insightful into the extremely difficult and dangerous journeys of myriad people, and genuinely nerve-racking as you try to help guide your wife to safety.
For such a small library, I doled out a lot of tens. Notwithstanding it representing the changing of the guard in terms of console gaming’s top dog, this remains (by a wide margin) my favorite console of its generation.
I don't know if it counts as a "flight sim," but Void Space Racing is an oft-on-sale (well, anecdotally, that seems to be the case) space racer that is worth picking out from the eShop's bargain bin.
Nothing I am going to buy right away, but I do eventually want to give Pikmin 3 a go — I have criminally avoided the franchise to-date. And while I don't want to spend the money for it, I would love it if a friend with kids got MKL: Home Circuit so I could give it a go.
I think this is phenomenal for kids — like the best gift they could ever get. And pretty darn fun to at least toy around with as an adult — though not sure I'll be ponying up for it at the moment.
The only 3D Sonic game I have consistently positive feelings about is Generations...and that is largely because a) so much of it was 2D; and b) the “greatest hits” formula allowed Sega to craft a solid 3D experience from the flotsam of playable levels drifting amidst the wreckage of Sonic’s 3D canon.
Sonic Mania is an absolute must even at full price, an incredible steal while discounted. And there is no better platform for it than Switch. Yes, I grew up in the 90s, so it pulls all the right nostalgia strings; but even for younger audiences, the game is gorgeous platforming bliss that will show why so many Nintendo maniacs nonetheless carry a torch for the of-late benighted Blue Blur.
Since there is no Generations on this list, and I somehow haven't played Colors (need to rectify that), by default the answers are the Adventure pair. They are deeply flawed in many ways, but in the moments that they hit their stride, they give glimmers of what could have / should have been the Blue Blur's 3D future.
I remember loving the blooper surfing level (levels? I can't remember if there are more than one), finding it (or them) challenging but not unfair. But I haven't played this since I was a teen, so we'll see what Old Man Me has to say.
I usually pass on Roguelites (I made an exception for GoNNER that I do not regret — that game was great), but this review and everything I have read elsewhere really makes this game sound special. I guess I will have to give it a go, once I can justify another gaming purchase (the 1 + 2 punch of 3D All-Stars and November's Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has eaten up my gaming budget for a while).
As someone who bought a New Nintendo 2DS XL in 2019 (and loves it!), I have a vested interest in the wonderful eShop (Virtual Console, in particular) staying open!

Re: Poll: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Is Out Today, Are You Getting It?
@rjejr thanks for the tip. I just tried again and it worked, so it was just yesterday I couldn’t do it. But thank you for the insight!

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #67 - F-Zero
Genuinely shocked Japan did not win. I did not think it was even close, but I guess I have unusual taste.

Indescribably excited to finally play this.
Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - October 2020
Haven't had a chance to tuck into it yet, but the only entrant I picked up was Horace.

Oh I never played these! Very exciting!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 24th)
Mostly Fez on Xbox 360 so far, but have several other games I’d like to get to if work permits....

Re: Poll: What Was The Best Switch Launch Game (That Wasn't Zelda: Breath Of The Wild)?
Technically NES Golf was a hidden launch title. Not given a chance at the crown in the poll, though!

@Skitrules I’m also not a big Roguelite fan, but I greatly enjoyed GoNNER. Worth a look even for genre skeptics.
Re: Feature: Horace Developers On Die Hard, Britishness, And Finding The Right Genre Label
Interesting. Hadn’t heard of this game, and I’m very much in the target audience. Any chance of an NL mini review forthcoming?
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 17th)
@Nabbit01 Completely agree. Ghost Trick is an absolute masterpiece. I'm at the very end and I don't want it to be over.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 17th)
Ori and the Blind Forest, Vs. Excitebike, and Yoshi’s Crafted World on Switch; Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective on 3DS; and Lego Batman on Wii.

@Glitchling78 Happy birthday, indeed!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 3rd)
Think it’s going to be an all retro weekend.
Lego Batman (Wii)
Wario Land II (Super Game Boy)
Final Fantasy VII (Switch)
Glover (N64)
Vs. Excitebike (Switch)

@sketchturner precisely my attitude. I have never crafted a mine, but look forward to pixelated pickaxes in Smash.
