@Princess_Lilly As the owner of an independent bookstore and sworn enemy of monopolistic, labor-abusing, tax-dodging mega-corporations, I always hope to see such comments on the days my favorite gaming websites succumb to this horrible man and his horrible company. Cheers to you! Long live small business!
Gurumin 3D, NightSky, Pushmo, Crashmo, Siesta Fiesta, Ever Oasis, Mighty Switch Force are just some of the absolute gems I've picked up over the last few weeks. It's been wonderful getting back into this console for a last hurrah, and stocking it up for loads of future sessions.
Currently playing through Pushmo now for the first time and loving it so much. There's a ton of content and it's the perfect lighthearted bedtime puzzler.
I picked up the original Phoenix Wright trilogy for $3 this morning as well as Street Fighter IV 3D. This countdown, while bittersweet as it heralds the end of an era, has completely revived my interest in my 3DS, which is now loaded with new titles I can't wait to spend time with. I hope the sales continue!
Great review! Bought this and Tears of the Kingdom with the reissue of game vouchers, saving $30 total. Can't wait to jump in, especially as I never played it the first time around.
Let's say I spend HALF the amount of time playing TotK that I spent playing BotW. That would still mean, at $70, that I'm paying about twenty-five cents per hour.
This looks astounding. I never buy physical and I've never wanted a collector's edition before seeing this. The game means a lot to me and to a lot of other people.
VERY solid list! Lil Gator Game, A Short Hike, Touryst, Kirby... all personal favorites I frequently turn to when I need a mental/emotional boost. I would add Blossom Tales, Rayman Legends, Lunistice, Runner 3, Guacamelee, OlliOlli World, Heave Ho, Floor Kids, Chicory, and Flynn: Son of Crimson.
@Bunkerneath Me too. QUBE 2 is one of my favorites of all time and I never miss an opportunity to recommend it, if you haven't played it already. Cheers!
@rushiosan I prefer games to embody the unique vision of their developers, without "game-y" constructs tacked on so that people feel they're getting their money's worth by counting minutes. There's more satisfaction to be had from a concise experience with art than with sheer duration.
@nessisonett Wasn't Princess Peach invented as a handful of pixels that represented nothing more than femininity and vulnerability? I think it'd be a huge mistake to try and capture some of whatever "character" she has from the games. Especially if the Mario they're showing us here also possesses a depth the games have never given him. How awesome would it be if this movie makes it so that Nintendo never sidelines or pigeonholes Peach again?
Gunman Clive and Mechstermination Force are both phenomenal games at bargain bin prices. I'll play anything this guy makes. Very happy to see he's still at it!
@mereel Don’t you think it’s a little foolish to grade all games on the same scale? I’d much rather know what the game sets out to do and a review and score that reflect how successful it is at doing that. I bought this after seeing the NL review score and because I love old school 3D platformers. This is absolutely a phenomenal entry in the genre and easily lives up to that 9.
I couldn't get the hang of it at first and was wondering where the "Shockingly tight controls" were to be found. Then I jumped into the settings and discovered that an "always run" option was checked. I unchecked it and the game became a very good game indeed.
The industry needs to do away with NDAs, especially when it comes to pay, because a lack of pay transparency is what perpetuates unfair pay practices. This is well known across other industries and I hope we can reach for it in this one.
@Felixfromdownunder What the screenshots don't show is how solid an experience the game is otherwise. I'd play an 8-bit version if I had to. Visuals have never been NMS's strong suit, but it's nice to see how good they've gotten over on the PS5. A mildly compromised Switch version I'd reckon is well worth the price of entry, especially if you get to take the whole experience on the go.
@KIRO That's exactly the vibe right now. I've put a good many hours into the game but shied away from its base-building, combat and more hardcore survival systems. I'm quite eager to start from scratch in relaxed mode because it sounds like exactly the experience I've been trying to have without needing to dodge the bits that don't interest me.
I've been playing this and it's been giving me as much joy as a mainstream Mario release. The levels are thoughtfully designed and not overfreighted with evidence of DIY and whimsy, like a lot of Mario Maker levels are (it's not necessarily a bad thing and I appreciate the aesthetic), while occasionally and unpredictably deviating with thrills and wit. (A particularly brilliant Mario shmup stands out.) If you own a copy of Mario Maker 2 and still have a fondness for the heyday of 2D Mario, do yourself a favor and jack into this creation. It's ripping good fun, and as close as Mario will get to having its own Sonic Mania.
@ModdedInkling I would say "evolution" rather than "innovation", though the company can be startlingly original when it wants to be. I feel Nintendo have a core set of gaming experiences that they've been evolving and refining non-stop for decades. I also feel that nobody comes close to providing the level of polish they provide when it comes to the actual experience of playing their games. But I think you make a great point about differentiating between want and need. Cheers.
Love, loved, loved my playthrough of this one. Have since started a second, and enjoying every story beat, perhaps even more this time around. When the Police HQ music starts in, I just know I'm going to have a good time. What a fantastic game, and with none of the modern claptrap that can make gaming insufferable these days. A sequel would make me very happy indeed.
Games like this make me so happy. Can't wait to dig in! And if any of my fellow retro enthusiasts haven't played The Mummy Demastered.... What?! Go get that!
@NeonPizza I understand this sentiment, but I must say, I found Kaze enormously entertaining. Level design is pitch perfect, music and pixel art are superb, and the challenge is significant without ever feeling cheap. Sometimes a great imitation or homage, without bringing anything new to the table, can stand on its own as an incredible gaming experience. For me, Kaze is one of those titles.
Seems to me that if they do away with all this release date malarkey, overhaul an inept and systemically abusive management class, and operate humane workplaces that value labor in terms of modern standards, the video game industry would stop being so synonymous with cruelty and dysfunction.
I love that games like this are still being made. Much has been said about how 3D games don't have the same retro appeal as 2D, but I welcome more lighthearted, non-marquee names into genre, which is far from dead for this nostalgic gamer.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Perhaps this is only the beginning of the Mario Cinematic Universe and lore as convoluted as the MCU's.
Re: Princess Peach And Donkey Kong Debut In New Super Mario Bros Movie Trailer
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Good point. I like to think there's an incidental canon and timeline. Seems like the fandom could support documenting it!
