In a collaboration with developer and publisher Apogee Entertainment, New Blood Entertainment, and Nightdive Studios, the 1995 classic FPS Rise of the Triad is getting a re-release on Switch with a boatload of new features and improvements.
Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is billed as the definitive version of the cult FPS game and is currently earmarked for an 'early 2023' launch on Nintendo Switch. It'll boast visual and performance boosts, along with an updated HUD and UI, a brand new level editor, and multiple soundtracks.
Scott Miller, founder of Apogee Entertainment, had some positive remarks to celebrate the announcement:
“From its fateful beginnings as a sequel in the Wolfenstein 3D franchise, Rise of the Triad still retains many Wolf-ish ideas, like the art style and run-n-gun gameplay. It’s some kind of miracle to see a game Apogee made in the mid-’90s finding new life a generation later, in its best form yet. Nightdive used the Excalibat to knock this outta the park!”
In addition to its digital launch, Nightdive Studios will also be collaborating with Limited Run Games to launch a physical version of Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition, with both standard and collector's editions in the works for multiple platforms. More details on this will be revealed in the near future.

Ah I remember watching my friend play this on his computer many years ago. I distinctly remember those monk dudes.
Looks pretty silly and over the top, which is good news for fans of the genre.
I never played this one personally, but it reminds me of Duke Nukem, Saints Row, and other ridiculous action-oriented games that tend to not take themselves very seriously. I think this is an admirable quality and not so common these days.
Oh so a lot of us were wondering what happened after the small announcement ages ago (the short video with one of the devs playing a port on the Switch). It came across as a different project back then and there was no mention of Nightdive. My guess is that Nightdive were enlisted and that its possible the engine itself presented some problems.
Cant remember where i heard it but I recall someone describing Rise of the Triad as being ‘an extension of the Wolf3D engine but basically held together by duct tape’ or something along those lines. It pulls off some impressive things but at the same time its a mess, so wouldnt be surprised if there were some issues with this. That and it looks like theyve included the Shareware episode + clearly polished up the experience enough that theyre confident in providing a level editor.
All that said, I’m personally more interested in this than most of the recent Nintendo Direct announcements. Features look cool and I really hope that Nightdive are able to work on something like Dark Forces or Outlaws (depending on how [i assume] Disney are with old Lucas Arts games. If we could get the re-release of the Aladdin and Lion King games, like we did, maybe theres actualy hope?
Blake Stone next please Apogee!
I played the freeware version when I was into the Dreamcast home brew scene. I can’t tell you how many times I played through it and loved it. I bought the full version on GOG a few years ago, but it’s cool to see the game get some love and a rerelease on the Switch. If the price is right, I might get it.
Retro trivia: ROTT was originally developed as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D.
This game is absolute bonkers, too and the maps makes zero sense! I played this back in the DOS days.
Hell yes! This brings back memories to when I had this on PC back in the 90's. Definitely getting the physical version.
Wow that takes me back. I played this to death on PC back in the 90s.
I'm not sure Pixel art in 4K is a selling point for me and I'm not sure this can be delivered on a Switch either.
Another 90's fps I've never heard of that I'll be adding to my collection of other 90's fps I'd never heard of but now love.
OK now do Blood
Lifelong Apogee fan here. I’ve never actually played very much of Rise of the Triad over the years. I’ve never warmed to the rather bland art style, though DOOM and Duke Nukem would always lure me back in (moreso DOOM). But I thought the same of Quake, and while my opinion of it hasn’t changed too much, I nevertheless really enjoyed it on Switch and saw the main game to completion.
I bought Rad Rodgers and Ion Fury due to their links to Apogee, so the physical version of this is also a must buy.
I would love to see some of Apogee’s other recent revivals on Switch as well, complete with physical releases, such as Monster Bash HD and Secret Agent HD. Hell, give us all the oldies!
@K1LLEGAL : I don’t know how people will respond to this nowadays given that it languished in the shadow of the far superior DOOM nearly three decades ago, but it was nevertheless an improvement over Wolfenstein 3D (as the two Blake Stone games use an enhanced version of its engine). I would nevertheless leap at a double pack with Aliens of Gold and Planet Strike though.
I played the original after a friend gifted me a GOG copy, I loved it. Really is a cool surprise seeing this one show up. Glad it's going to have multiplayer, friend and I had fun with the multiplayer modes (albeit GOG's version used direct IP instead of a matchmaking service).
@K1LLEGAL As someone who played Blake Stone this past summer (bought it from GOG, was really cheap during the Summer Sale), I second this.
@Silly_G I loved Doom, and I enjoyed Blake Stone. Just a shame it got overshadowed by Doom as Doom was the better looking more advanced game at the time, since I had fun with Aliens of Gold.
Whoa! Forgot all about this game! I loved it back in the day.
@JJtheTexan yes! ‘Blood’ with multiplayer would be amazing
@GamingFan4Lyf You likely know this but I just wanted to add that this game was designed by id Software co-founder Tom Hall.
After leaving midway through Doom's development due to creative differences, he borrowed the characters' names in Rise Of The Triad from his scrapped design document for Doom.
Great - Hexen I and II next please!
@asmi8803 Nightdive already did a remaster of Blood, but for some reason they refuse to port it to the Switch. Same applies to Forsaken. sigh Speaking of Forsaken, they really need to get their hands on the Descent trilogy and work their magic. That would be sick.
Can't wait! Switch is best for retro FPS
@Silly_G yea please for the double pack! Blake Stone still has one of the best video game soundtracks.
@K1LLEGAL : Bobby Prince produced some very memorable soundtracks for many of our favourite DOS games. I also just remembered that I used to role play as Blake Stone (or rather the enemies) in the playground during my primary school years.
I think I'm gonna get this, still undecided whether to buy this on switch, xbox series, or on pc.
I hope enhancements also include analog aiming. I have this on GOG but it feels stiff.
