These are incredible. What a designer this guy is. Anybody who still hasn’t played Celeste ... $@)$*%??? It so bears his stamp of brilliance. Playing these you feel like the original mario games are fan-made versions of his creations. If you’re listening, Nintendo, PLEASE let him make a Mario game!! PLEASE!?!? I am a grown man down on his knees and begging.
A 7/10 in light of what I consider gamebreaking issues is incomprehensible to me.
This really does look horrible on Switch. I can't think what excuses can be made. So many games look so much better doing a lot more with the hardware... Shame, because I really would have liked to play it. As it stands, it's a mess. I'll reconsider if improved.
Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this while browsing the shop last night. Grabbed it right away thinking it was a mistake that would soon be fixed. Looking forward to playing!
What the hell is wrong with these people? “It’s basically the same game everyone hated, was critically panned, and is frequently marked down fo $14.99 on the eshop.”
The people need to rise up. EA don’t deserve the license any more.
@N64-ROX Just purchased Submerged for a mere fiver on the eshop and first impressions are very positive. It’s a chill game of exploration with a wonderful atmosphere, despite the whole your brother is dying thing. Nice visuals too. Wish the controls were tighter.
Inbetween women’s World Cup matches I’ll be getting down to business with Enter the Gungeon and Gato Roboto. The latter especially - I just love the whole aesthetic. Really well thought-out, great level design and superb sound effects and music. A total blast and a steal at that price.
And Autumn is almost over at Marker Dell Farm in Stardew Valley. I’ll be chilling out in town after I harvest my pumpkins, cranberries, eggplants and yams.
I’m a big fan of the original Yooka-Laylee. My only real complaint remains the camera, which had no reason to be less than perfect, given how much polish they gave every other aspect of the game. There were too many precision platforming moments frustrated by shoddy camera placement. This sequel looks to have solved that problem neatly. It looks great, frankly, and brimming with the sort of character and whimsy I’d expect of the franchise. Day 1 for me.
@kupocake It’s about time we see a new spin on the genre. And I appreciate the pun: glad you had the temerity to pull the chrono trigger on that one. You’ll always tick off some of the tockers.
@WhiteTrashGuy I waited a good long time to make this purchase because I couldn’t be sure about the gameplay. I love the arcade action of Starlink, which can be very challenging in places but is not really high stakes. I thought the rogue-like aspect of Everspace would make it too stressful.
For me, it just isn’t as much fun to play as Starlink, but it is different enough to not feel like a redundant purchase. The graphics are lovely, the soundtrack is fantastic, and the gameplay structured around runs and upgrades can be quite addictive.
What I love about Starlink is if I want to explore instead of battle, I can. I can chill out planetside or plumb the depths of the Atlas system with only occasional and almost never fatal combat. What makes this so much fun, for me, is how beautifully the ships handle. You just wanna blast around in them. That’s not really a thing in Everspace. After you clear an area, you’re free to roam a bit, but soon enough a gang of enemies interrupts your exploration and almost always obliterates you. That, and the piloting just doesn’t feel as immersively real. But that’s OK... it’s not what Everspace is going for.
I have a feeling that when I reach a certain level of power in the game it’ll be more my style, but the early hours are too challenging to relax into, albeit very fun.
Anyway, I don’t regret the purchase at all. And if you’re the type of gamer that enjoys a good challenge coupled with gorgeous visuals, then definitely give Everspace a go. It’s a pretty original entry in what can be a hackneyed genre full of half-baked money-grabs.
It’s off to the races! I picked up Fast RMX (adding to my long list of fun games with dumb names) and Horizon Chase Turbo on sale this week so I’ll be pursuing trophies all over the damn place.
It’s true what they say about A Vroom of One’s Own...
@DockEllisD Sounds great and with just enough twist to differentiate it from MK8 Deluxe, which I have and love, but don't want to repeat with different characters. Thanks for the input!
@DockEllisD What are your impressions of Team Sonic Racing? All footage I’ve seen is from other consoles and I’m worried the Switch version has too many compromises.
Everspace! Finally bit the bullet on this one and purchased full price on the eshop. Couldn’t be happier with it. Intense arcade space combat, beautiful visuals, great package overall and a fun complement to Starlink. (Mechanics are different enough to prevent it being redundant. But I will say: both games have horribly dull names.)
Also finally bought Shovel Knight and can’t wait to DIG IN.
@ChromaticDracula Awesome! Yours is the first description that’s really given me a shove toward the eShop... it sounds like a blast. I love space combat games that balance exploration with action and can create the appropriate sense of wonder and terror through excellent visuals and audio. Gameplay mechanics make it sound like Dead Cells in outer space. Thanks for sharing!
This has been on my wishlist (the game, not the physical edition) for some time, but I haven't pulled the trigger because I'm both waiting for a sale and I'm not sure about the gameplay. People really do seem to like it tho. I just wonder if anybody feels strongly about it one way or another. I really enjoy the arcade-style action of Starlink, but I'm not as crazy about levelling up and customization. Basically, gameplay is more important to me than depth, though of course I like a good story mode and I need motivation beyond gameplay to keep returning to a game. It just usually isn't upgrading/customization, for me.
I’ve never played a game in this genre, but it seems to me like it would get repetitive rather quickly. I guess fans of the movies have shown they’re ok with endless repetition LOL.
I’m in the mood for some fun platforming action, so it’ll be Rayman, DKC: Tropical Freeze, The Messenger, and perhaps some cassette hunting in Celeste.
I haven’t played the first two but now I’m super intrigued. Perhaps 3 will be open world? I’m thinking of grabbing 2 at the next discount. Any advice on whether it’s ok to start there?
No interest until I saw this trailer. Frankly it looks like one hell of an awesome movie, one that fully embraces itself as camp and knows that you'll never 100% please fans of the source material. They were better off making the movie on their own terms while giving only the occasional wink to the video game franchise. Which frankly could never hope to sustain so much public interest.
It also looks like some of Carrey's best work in a long time, a return to the slapstick he perfected in the 90s.
Crimson Moon is an absolute blast, and a huge jolt to the IP, in my opinion. The racing is fantastic and tough as nails, and the coliseum is super tense but not unfair. The taunting is particularly brutal and at times too much. Not sure if there's a way to turn it off. But definitely give this a try if you haven't yet. Greatly increases the value of the game, IMHO.
@Grumblevolcano Finally getting into this game myself. Before I was just enjoying exploration and combat in short play sessions without pursuing the main storyline. I feel I could have used a more linear format up front, with the system slowly opening, maybe a whole planet of missions you have to complete before you get to explore, rather than those poorly written cut scenes. Glad I’m finally enjoying it though - especially the Star Fox content.
@SterlingEyes Hellblade is a fantastic game, but visuals are seriously downgraded in handheld, and I feel you’d do the game, and the team that ported it, a disservice by not experiencing it docked. My two cents 👍
Starlink just clicked for me, so I’ll be tootling around Atlas for sure. Boxboy + Boxgirl will brighten the place as well, I suspect. And perhaps I’ll hone my reflexes with some OlliOlli. Happy weekend all!
I have a sneaking suspicion a lot of the above comments are not made by real Nintendo Life readers. They’re all just variations on “heck yeah, love this game!” It’s pretty, and it’s fun for a while, but wow is it repetitive. Definitely not the game all these fake accounts claim it is. Smoke a joint, fly around, blast some things. That’s about the extent of it.

Sorry, but I am unable to tear myself away from Mario Maker 2 to write this post.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 15th)
A windfall of new games for me this weekend, as well as watching team USA blow the competition out of the water in the World Cup:
NBA 2K19
Cuphead
Unravel 2 (ingenious co-op fun!)
Shantae: Pirate’s Curse
Submerged
OK, maybe not a windfall... more like a breezefall. Still, enough to keep me busy.
Have a great weekend everyone, and happy gaming!

@Judgedean I enjoyed this more than I expected to. It’s immersive, got a decent story, but most of all the gameplay is fun. Enjoy!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 1st)
I could really, really, REALLY go for a new Zelda game, or even some DLC for BotW. Absent that, I’ll be digging into recent cherished acquisitions:
Shovel Knight
Horizon Chase Turbo
Fast RMX
Everspace
In the probablies:
Starlink
Yooka Laylee
The Messenger
Hyper Light Drifter
Runner3
And, when my buddy comes over:
Rocket League
Flat Heroes
Towerfall
That’ll be the weekend for me. Happy gaming to one and all!
