Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Metroid Prime 4: Beyond?

maulinks

I'm getting to the final area, the game does slow a bit during the ice section, but then improves again. I think there are many highs. People seem to be forgetting about about what Metroid Prime was, many of the "criticisms" were always there on metroid prime games

> Visually - way above the other entries
> Combat - metroid prime has NEVER had good combat, and for some reason we give it a pass on that, lets be real - in this game it is way better than on previous ones, specially bosses
> Storytelling - the NPCs get in the way, but the areas make a great job of telling the story without saying anything. The ice area does a nice job of telling the story of what happened. I particularly like the fact that I have no idea what is going on
> Music - excellent on the dungeons and bosses, but they could have done something better on the desert area. Its boring sensation is very amplified by the lack of music
> NPCs - well, these guys were here on metroid prime 3, and there they were dumber, uglier, and with worse voice-acting. But they didn't follow us around. The game always feels better when they're gone.
> Exploration: In the dungeons this is more or less on the vein of Prime 1/3. Prime 1 was interconnected, 2 was kinda, 3 was not. The desert was added I guess to fill that never ending teleportation on Prime 3 - but the lack of music brings it down, a lot.

With that in mind I think the game is more or less a 9 for me so far - people have graduation googles, to me it is impossible to defend that Prime 3 was better

Re: Review: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (Switch 2) - A Serviceable Port Of One Of Lara's Very Best

maulinks

@BaldB3lper78 well, no one is comparing this to PS5, but to the original PS3 release. I played this game back then.

Considering cyberpunk's performance on Switch 2. I would expect the Switch 2 to run the PS4 version of this game... very easily.

They were probably working on a Switch 1 version only, and just bumped that up.

Honestly, it's kind of a fair price, bad port, but very cheap price, kinda makes sense. I just hope people don't go expecting this is an excellent port Switch 2 level performance game for a huge bargain, because it is really not.

Re: Digital Foundry Dives Into Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition's "Big Downgrades" On Switch 2

maulinks

I mean, I'm not a fan of Digital Foundry either, and I don't like their nitpicking.

But this looks worse than the PS3 version of this game. The switch 2 runs cyberpunk well, when the ps4 struggled terribly. I don't think this is nitpicking at all.

I played the PS3 version back then and this looks awful. Switch 2 can easily run at least the PS4 remaster of this game. This is lazy work.

maulinks

This may seem fine, but for reference, the Switch 2 version is sginificantly inferior to the PS3 version. This is not a good port.

They basically did a port for Switch 1 based on the PS3 version and bumped it up - it looks void of detail and shadows that the PS4 version and even the PS3 version have.

For switch 2 they should have ported the PS4 version - this feels like lazy work honestly. Not a good port at all.

Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake Switch 2 Trailer Introduces Shinra, The Turks & Avalanche

maulinks

@PinderSchloss I disagree when it comes to FF7 Remake, actually felt that it had a lot of the original's atmosphere.

But I kind of agree when it comes to Rebirth, a lot of cut content, different directions, story got super confusing... a lot of open world "to-do list style side missions / content" that is present in every open world game (destroys the feeling of surprise in the adventure in my opinion) not to mention that the length really tested my patience, I abandoned the game many times before finishing it...

I mean, it's a very good game, but the overall FF7 feel defintely took a hit on Rebirth in my opinion. It's probably on purpose (hence the title), but not really my cup of tea.

Re: Opinion: Silksong Might Just Be The Funniest Game Of The Year

I really like the lines of dialogue in this one. I thought it would be weird having a main character that talks at first (in contrast to Hollow Knight), but Hornet is so well written.

I'm also playing Hades II and having a blast with the writing, seems indies are knocking out of the park this year!

Re: Three Nintendo Ray Tracing & Rendering-Related Patents Published In Japan

maulinks

Patenting is a way to protect and promote innovation. Without them, there is little incentive to innovation, as innovators are quickly copied.

Patents also don't last forever, and they vary greatly by country, so even then it's not a full protection. It's more of a bare minimum protection, even Apple struggled on their battle with Samsung.

Personally, I don't think designs should be patented, but some technology processes should, as they can be extremely difficult to crackdown, and once its done, can be easily copied. For anyone interested, research the blue LED innovation in the 90s, it's super interesting.

Re: Switch 2 Helps Street Fighter 6 Achieve Five Million Global Sales

maulinks

@Ryu_Niiyama the switch 2 version has no modes (like performance vs quality), absolutely nothing to regulate performance (unlike cyberpunk which had many options).

This is one of these things that makes this feel lazy. On the graphics tabs there are only 2 things, one related to brightness and some other thing i dont even remember

Re: Random: Yakuza 0's Antagonists Reunite To Play Switch 2 Together

maulinks

@Vyacheslav333 because the game is called Yakuza 0 in the west, and Ryu da Gotoku 0 in Japan, and these were always their names.

Ryu ga Gotoku more or less translates to "Like a Dragon" so Like a Dragon was always the name of the franchise in Japan.

The reason for the different names is that in Japan referencing Yakuza is fround upon.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Confirmed For Switch

maulinks

@sketchturner they have pretty good gameplay, excellent music, but the story is the strongest selling point, so...

This one that was just announced is probably the one you'll like the best, its more gameplay than story focused... very focused on exploration

You might enjoy Xeno 3, its the one with the most polished gameplay, but I would recommend playing on hard
