I've been so busy playing so many other games that I haven't touched Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and all the new tracks. I should dust it off soon and give it another go.
Not totally surprised by this. Microsoft wants to sell Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. They don't care as much about selling Xbox consoles. The more platforms Game Pass can run on, the more subscribers they will have. I think they'd be willing to do this with Sony as well, but Sony is obsessed with continuing the outdated concept of "console wars."
I just want the Atari Games titles from 84 onward on the Switch. They keep getting ignored (I know why, WB owns them), but they are a huge part of the Atari history, bigger than other consoles they released post 2600. Just get me a collection with Marble Madness, Paperboy, Gauntlet, Roadblasters, heck even Primal Rage and San Francisco Rush 2049 and we'll call it good.
I might have to dust off my Wii U, hook it back up, and give this game a go. I got it many years ago, but I never wanted to start it up since I know how long RPGs take and I unhooked my Wii U about a year ago.
Looks great! The animation is gorgeous, the voices are good (yes, even Pratt) and the references to the Mario universe (Smash Bros., Mario Maker, Mario Kart, etc.) are going to be fun for fans to find and enjoy.
I like that Peach doesn’t have a baby voice and is a strong character. It’s time to retire the princess gets captured trope for good. Or at least in future Mario and Zelda games.
No, this isn’t The Godfather, but it’s a fun family movie like Sonic was a few years ago.
Where are the Switch games on this list? I mean, it wasn't a banner year per say, but plenty of strong titles that have come out (Splatoon 3, Xenoblade 3, Bayonetta 3, Kirby and the Forgotten World, Mario+Rabbids 2, etc.)
Last of Us 1 Remake was a lazy cash grab from Sony and shouldn't be anywhere near this list.
Nintendo needs to come out with a Nintendo collection similar to the Atari 50 one. Loaded with interviews, images, games, and more. It would sell like hot cakes.
@sfb I've been trying to get into the Kit and Krysta podcasts and... I don't know. The chemistry between them just seems very forced and awkward. Some of the things they talk about are interesting and it's nice that they have some more freedom to go "off script" and chat about things not just tied to Nintendo, but it seems a little bit like they felt compelled to do this due to their history doing Nintendo Minutes, and I'm not sure it's clicking or working.
I won a Wii U at a holiday party. At the time, I had stopped gaming. The last console I owned was a PlayStation 2, which was fun, but after that I didn't have an interest in picking up another console. My wife had a Wii, which was fun for a little bit, but after the whole motion control schtick grew old and the charm of playing old games on the Virtual Console went away, I lost interest. The Wii U sparked interest in gaming again. It felt like Nintendo made a game console for gamers again, like the GameCube. It had flaws, and the game droughts were a problem, but it made me interested in the Switch, a console that felt like a Wii U with the problems polished out. Now I have a Switch, an Xbox Series S, a few mini consoles and yes, I still have my Wii U. While I will admit the Switch made me a gamer again, the Wii U revived my interest in the hobby again after many years.
Nintendo's marketing of the Wii U was atrocious. First off, the name of the device. Wii U? Too many people thought it was an accessory to the Wii. Second, it was being promoted at places like Pottery Barn, which aren't known for their video games. Also, it fell into the Nintendo trope of appealing to kids and no one else.
I won a Wii U at a holiday party and I fell in love with the console. So many great games on it. It truly felt like a return to form for Nintendo. They were once again making a console for gamers.
I think the Switch smoothed at the edges of the Wii U, had a much better name ("Switch"), a solid lineup of titles, and a much better marketing plan. Yes, Nintendo will always appeal to kids, but the Switch showed adults playing it, gamers playing it. It was the console anyone could play anywhere.
Most of the best game developers were either NES fans or heavily influenced by the console. I still believe the NES and the SNES was Nintendo at its best, and they never quite reached those levels since (though they've gotten very close with the Switch).
I was hoping when I read about "cats" that Stray was announced for the Switch. That would have been awesome! Instead, a couple of decent games I might check out at some point.
I laugh at people shocked that numbers of units sold are starting to drop for the console. Um, you are an almost 6 year old platform that has sold over 114 million units. Of course there is going to start being some slowdown.
There hasn't been an indie that has really grabbed me since Hades. Eastward was fine, but nothing great.
If we get something like Stray coming to the Switch or a release date for Silksong, that's one thing. If it's another lineup of mostly farm simulators and a bunch of Japanese RPGs, then ho-hum.
The Switch is almost 6 years old. Its aging tech and has likely sold over 115 million units. It's had an amazing run. It still has great games coming out for it. Hell, in October alone I picked up Splatoon 3, No Man's Sky, Persona 5 Royal and Bayonetta 3.
PlayStation is still a very powerful brand and outside of the Wii generation, has won three of the last four console generations. It's going to sell a lot of units, especially as it's brand new tech. With the age of the Switch and as more PS5 consoles become available to purchase, it should not surprise anyone if PS5 starts winning month after month in console sales in the near future.
However, if Nintendo comes out with a Switch Pro/Switch 2, then all bets are off.
The Switch is starting to look like a 5 year old console. I'm still playing it a lot and in fact I'm playing multiple games on it right now (No Man's Sky, Bayonetta 3, Persona 5, Splatoon 3), but it's going to be more challenging for new titles to run optimally on the Switch, if they come to the platform at all.
More and more, for new titles, I'm going to my Xbox Series S. I love my Switch and if a pro/Switch 2 came out tomorrow, I'd plop down the money and get it. But it's starting to look its age.
@Westlondonmist Whatever the case, it's an incomplete collection without the Atari Games titles. I'd take them over most of the aged like spoiled milk 2600 titles.
It's really too bad WB doesn't let Atari include the Atari Games arcade games with these collections. When I think of Atari classics, I think of games like Paperboy, Gauntlet, Marble Madness to go alongside Asteroids, Crystal Castles, Tempest, Centipede, Missile Command. They should all be together as representation of Atari.
Why do people post every single thought they have on social media? 99 times out of 100 things you post on social media will more likely hurt you than help you. It's a cancer on society.
It's on Game Pass, so I'll probably play it that way, but I'm down for a Zelda game that doesn't talk down to the player, as many modern day Zelda games do anymore (sans Breath of the Wild).
I'll check it out, but I haven't really touched either my Switch or Xbox Series S in a few weeks. I'm wondering if I've fallen out of love with video games. I got the Cowabunga collection, played about 5 minutes of Turtles in Time and was like "eh, not really that special" and haven't played anything since.
Hybrid portability. I mean, it still blows me away. Playing high quality games in handheld while my wife watches something on TV is a Godsend. It's also great to keep it docked, fire up the pro controller, and play it on the TV.
Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Odyssey made the first year of the console one of the best first years of any console in history.
Other great franchises as well like Luigi's Mansion 3, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Smash Ultimate, Xenoblade 2 and 3, Metroid Dread, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, just to name a few.
Great new games like Astral Chain.
Great indie support.
Great place to play retro games.
Stronger than usual third party support, though that admittingly has diminished a bit with the console aging.
Cons for me would be weak online service and infrastructure, aging hardware (it just doesn't compare anymore to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S), and Nintendo's own, shall I say, laziness (porting a bunch of Wii U games to fill gaps, releasing half baked games like Switch Sports and Mario Strikers, still ignoring certain IPS like Star Fox, F-Zero, Punch-Out and others).
I know drift is a problem with a lot of people, but oddly enough after 4+ years of a lot of usage, my joycons still work just fine.
The Switch might go down as my favorite console of all time, but the aging hardware is making me play it less and less, as more games I want to play like Elden Ring are only going to the other consoles.
EA at one time was the home of the best developers who took pride in making high quality games that almost looked like "art" (hence the name Electronic Arts).
Now, it's just a lazy cash grab, online all the time, microtransaction, games as a service garbage.
It must be tough for Trip Hawkins to see what has happened to his baby.
I expected an arcade style sports game in the vein of NBA Jam, and that's pretty much what this game is. I'm not sure why people thought it was going to be more than that.
I'm so burned out on Genesis games. Between the Switch collection, the NSO online and the first mini, I have more than enough Genesis games to scratch the itch. How about Saturn and Dreamcast games on Switch or minis, Sega.
It would be cool if Doug was on this one, but likely since he's now a Disney character, we won't get to see him. Too bad, Disney hasn't done anything with that franchise since that movie came out in 2000.
It also would be cool if they could somehow get human characters from Nickelodeon as characters. Play as Marc Summers, or Barth from You Can't Do That On Television, or Mr. Wizard, or Jeff the living mannequin from Today's Special.
I remember growing up going to Software Etc. at the mall. I LOVED that store. Playing the SNES kiosk, the Genesis kiosk, digging through their new releases. It was so much fun.
Then one day GameStop bought them out, and I saw the store gradually change. The clean, modern look devolved into more of a cluttered, cheap look. They got rid of the kiosks and some of the more obscure games that they used to sell in exchange for toys. The employees, at one time extremely friendly and knowledgeable, became rude and disinterested. I just no longer like going there.
And as I told my wife yesterday, I've shifted into a mostly digital gamer anymore. I think the last physical game I bought was the Super Mario 3D Anniversary collection.

Amazing, amazing game. Well deserved.
On another topic, Nintendo had a surprisingly good night at the Awards. Doug Bowser was going up on stage a lot grabbing awards.

Splatoon 3 scratches my first person shooter itch just fine.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 3rd)
Elden Ring, Psychonauts 2, Persona 5 Royal, Bayonetta 3, No Man's Sky, SiFu, in between rounds of Splatoon 3, Tetris 99 and Mario Strikers.

GOW is benefitting from recency bias. It's a good game, but it's not better than Elden Ring.
The Quarry? Really? Not sure that would even make my Top 15 for the year.
