Re: Microsoft Enters "10-Year Commitment To Bring Call Of Duty To Nintendo"

Not totally surprised by this. Microsoft wants to sell Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. They don't care as much about selling Xbox consoles. The more platforms Game Pass can run on, the more subscribers they will have. I think they'd be willing to do this with Sony as well, but Sony is obsessed with continuing the outdated concept of "console wars."

Re: Atari Announces Ultra Rare Arcade Shooter 'Akka Arrh' Is Coming To Switch

kingbk

I just want the Atari Games titles from 84 onward on the Switch. They keep getting ignored (I know why, WB owns them), but they are a huge part of the Atari history, bigger than other consoles they released post 2600. Just get me a collection with Marble Madness, Paperboy, Gauntlet, Roadblasters, heck even Primal Rage and San Francisco Rush 2049 and we'll call it good.

Re: Princess Peach And Donkey Kong Debut In New Super Mario Bros Movie Trailer

Looks great! The animation is gorgeous, the voices are good (yes, even Pratt) and the references to the Mario universe (Smash Bros., Mario Maker, Mario Kart, etc.) are going to be fun for fans to find and enjoy.

I like that Peach doesn’t have a baby voice and is a strong character. It’s time to retire the princess gets captured trope for good. Or at least in future Mario and Zelda games.

No, this isn’t The Godfather, but it’s a fun family movie like Sonic was a few years ago.

@sfb I've been trying to get into the Kit and Krysta podcasts and... I don't know. The chemistry between them just seems very forced and awkward. Some of the things they talk about are interesting and it's nice that they have some more freedom to go "off script" and chat about things not just tied to Nintendo, but it seems a little bit like they felt compelled to do this due to their history doing Nintendo Minutes, and I'm not sure it's clicking or working.

Re: Feature: Wii U Memories - Our Pre-Launch Thoughts On Nintendo's Charming Misstep

I won a Wii U at a holiday party. At the time, I had stopped gaming. The last console I owned was a PlayStation 2, which was fun, but after that I didn't have an interest in picking up another console. My wife had a Wii, which was fun for a little bit, but after the whole motion control schtick grew old and the charm of playing old games on the Virtual Console went away, I lost interest. The Wii U sparked interest in gaming again. It felt like Nintendo made a game console for gamers again, like the GameCube. It had flaws, and the game droughts were a problem, but it made me interested in the Switch, a console that felt like a Wii U with the problems polished out. Now I have a Switch, an Xbox Series S, a few mini consoles and yes, I still have my Wii U. While I will admit the Switch made me a gamer again, the Wii U revived my interest in the hobby again after many years.

Re: Feature: Wii U Vs. Switch - How Did Those Nintendo Hardware Reveal Trailers Compare?

kingbk

Nintendo's marketing of the Wii U was atrocious. First off, the name of the device. Wii U? Too many people thought it was an accessory to the Wii. Second, it was being promoted at places like Pottery Barn, which aren't known for their video games. Also, it fell into the Nintendo trope of appealing to kids and no one else.

I won a Wii U at a holiday party and I fell in love with the console. So many great games on it. It truly felt like a return to form for Nintendo. They were once again making a console for gamers.

I think the Switch smoothed at the edges of the Wii U, had a much better name ("Switch"), a solid lineup of titles, and a much better marketing plan. Yes, Nintendo will always appeal to kids, but the Switch showed adults playing it, gamers playing it. It was the console anyone could play anywhere.

Re: Nintendo To Broadcast Indie World Showcase Later This Week

kingbk

There hasn't been an indie that has really grabbed me since Hades. Eastward was fine, but nothing great.

If we get something like Stray coming to the Switch or a release date for Silksong, that's one thing. If it's another lineup of mostly farm simulators and a bunch of Japanese RPGs, then ho-hum.

Re: Japanese Charts: Bayonetta 3 Debuts In Second As PlayStation 5 Outsells Switch

kingbk

The Switch is almost 6 years old. Its aging tech and has likely sold over 115 million units. It's had an amazing run. It still has great games coming out for it. Hell, in October alone I picked up Splatoon 3, No Man's Sky, Persona 5 Royal and Bayonetta 3.

PlayStation is still a very powerful brand and outside of the Wii generation, has won three of the last four console generations. It's going to sell a lot of units, especially as it's brand new tech. With the age of the Switch and as more PS5 consoles become available to purchase, it should not surprise anyone if PS5 starts winning month after month in console sales in the near future.

However, if Nintendo comes out with a Switch Pro/Switch 2, then all bets are off.

Re: Review: It Takes Two - Not Quite The Perfect Marriage, But A Satisfying Switch Port

kingbk

The Switch is starting to look like a 5 year old console. I'm still playing it a lot and in fact I'm playing multiple games on it right now (No Man's Sky, Bayonetta 3, Persona 5, Splatoon 3), but it's going to be more challenging for new titles to run optimally on the Switch, if they come to the platform at all.

More and more, for new titles, I'm going to my Xbox Series S. I love my Switch and if a pro/Switch 2 came out tomorrow, I'd plop down the money and get it. But it's starting to look its age.

Re: Nintendo Direct Showcase Confirmed For Tomorrow

kingbk

I'll check it out, but I haven't really touched either my Switch or Xbox Series S in a few weeks. I'm wondering if I've fallen out of love with video games. I got the Cowabunga collection, played about 5 minutes of Turtles in Time and was like "eh, not really that special" and haven't played anything since.

Re: Talking Point: What Are The Nintendo Switch's Defining Moments (So Far)?

kingbk

Hybrid portability. I mean, it still blows me away. Playing high quality games in handheld while my wife watches something on TV is a Godsend. It's also great to keep it docked, fire up the pro controller, and play it on the TV.

Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Odyssey made the first year of the console one of the best first years of any console in history.

Other great franchises as well like Luigi's Mansion 3, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Smash Ultimate, Xenoblade 2 and 3, Metroid Dread, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, just to name a few.

Great new games like Astral Chain.

Great indie support.

Great place to play retro games.

Stronger than usual third party support, though that admittingly has diminished a bit with the console aging.

Cons for me would be weak online service and infrastructure, aging hardware (it just doesn't compare anymore to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S), and Nintendo's own, shall I say, laziness (porting a bunch of Wii U games to fill gaps, releasing half baked games like Switch Sports and Mario Strikers, still ignoring certain IPS like Star Fox, F-Zero, Punch-Out and others).

I know drift is a problem with a lot of people, but oddly enough after 4+ years of a lot of usage, my joycons still work just fine.

The Switch might go down as my favorite console of all time, but the aging hardware is making me play it less and less, as more games I want to play like Elden Ring are only going to the other consoles.

Re: FIFA 23 Legacy Edition Will Have Women's Football, But No New Features

kingbk

EA at one time was the home of the best developers who took pride in making high quality games that almost looked like "art" (hence the name Electronic Arts).

Now, it's just a lazy cash grab, online all the time, microtransaction, games as a service garbage.

It must be tough for Trip Hawkins to see what has happened to his baby.

Re: Whoops, Looks Like Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 Has Been Leaked

kingbk

It would be cool if Doug was on this one, but likely since he's now a Disney character, we won't get to see him. Too bad, Disney hasn't done anything with that franchise since that movie came out in 2000.

It also would be cool if they could somehow get human characters from Nickelodeon as characters. Play as Marc Summers, or Barth from You Can't Do That On Television, or Mr. Wizard, or Jeff the living mannequin from Today's Special.

(I know, I'm showing my age here, haha).

Re: GameStop Staff Layoffs Are Announced As Chief Financial Officer Leaves

kingbk

I remember growing up going to Software Etc. at the mall. I LOVED that store. Playing the SNES kiosk, the Genesis kiosk, digging through their new releases. It was so much fun.

Then one day GameStop bought them out, and I saw the store gradually change. The clean, modern look devolved into more of a cluttered, cheap look. They got rid of the kiosks and some of the more obscure games that they used to sell in exchange for toys. The employees, at one time extremely friendly and knowledgeable, became rude and disinterested. I just no longer like going there.

And as I told my wife yesterday, I've shifted into a mostly digital gamer anymore. I think the last physical game I bought was the Super Mario 3D Anniversary collection.
