Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct, Then?

kingbk

I like retro collections, so Tomb Raider is cool.

Thousand Year Door looks awesome.

Might play that new Prince of Persia game down the road.

That F-Zero game looks too busy and chaotic.

We're getting close to Mario saturation.

It's pretty obvious focus has shifted to Switch 2/the next console.

Re: Nintendo Direct September 2023: Every Announcement, Game Reveal, Trailer

kingbk

This direct screamed "we're working on the Switch 2/new console" to me.

Not bad, but a lot of remakes/rereleases/smaller games and no major announcements.

F-Zero looks too chaotic and too busy to be fun. Just rename it "L.A. Rush Hour: The Game".

Nintendo is milking the success of the Mario movie. I love Mario games, but oversaturation is always a potential problem.

I think the next Direct will have something about the new console, maybe not a full on new announcement of it, but a teaser or something, This felt like the last Direct for the current Switch.

Re: Sean Murray: No Man's Sky Is Having Its "Biggest Month In The Last Few Years"

kingbk

I really want to like No Man Sky, but I just don't jibe with it. The last couple of times, it's telling me to go find cooper, but no matter where I go or what I do, I can't find any damn cooper. While this happens, my energy drains, so then I have to refill my energy, and then to save I have to go all the way back to the spaceship. It's just a lot of slogging around for little return.

Re: Review: Bomb Rush Cyberfunk - Bleeding Cool Style But Always In Jet Set's Shadow

kingbk

I got it. It's good, I wouldn't call it one of the best Switch games of all time, but still a lot of fun. The music is awesome and the sense of style is quite enduring. It stinks that Sega won't make modern versions of Crazy Taxi or Jet Set Radio, so we have to rely on other companies to make Taxi Chaos and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, but I appreciate it. Sega seems to only care about new Sonic games and sometimes Yakuza.

Re: Talking Point: Zelda: TOTK Isn't A Shoo-In For GOTY 2023, And That's A Good Thing

kingbk

I don't think a remake will win it, so Resident Evil 4 is out.

RPGs typically don't do well in this category, so Balduer's Gate III is out.

Fighting games are still pretty niche, so Street Fighter 6 is out.

Spider-Man 2 looks like a sequel to a fun action game, so likely it's out.

Starfield maybe has a chance, but we need to see if it lives up to the hype.

Re: Anniversary: Nintendo Famicom, The NES' Japanese Sibling, Is 40 Years Old

kingbk

The NES was such a revelation in the US. I
remember opening mine on Christmas Day 1987. That started my love for video gaming that continued when I got the Super Nintendo in 1991, the Nintendo 64 in 1996, The PlayStation 2 in 2001, before going on a gaming hiatus and then winning a Wii U at a Christmas party in 2012 and now owning a Switch and Xbox Series S.

Re: Random: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Devs "Too Occupied" To Play Elden Ring

kingbk

Elden Ring is a fantastic game, but it's so different in many ways to Tears of the Kingdom. ER is much more combat focused. A lot of the game is overcoming daunting bosses and hordes of enemies. There is combat in Tears, but much more of the game is about puzzle solving and using creative intuition to overcome challenges.

Both are amazing games, but I don't think playing one will prepare you for the other, or vice versa.

Re: Nintendo Direct Showcase Confirmed For Tomorrow, 21st June

kingbk

Metal Gear Solid Snake Collection and (maybe) Batman Arkham Collection, as that has been rumored to be coming to the Switch for a while now.

For Nintendo first party titles, maybe a new Donkey Kong Country game, maybe something out in left field like a new F-Zero or Star Fox game.

And maybe, just maybe, something about Silksong.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Brand Momentum Has Been Flat Since 2018, Says Sony

kingbk

Nintendo has "won" the past two console generations. It won with the Wii against the PS3 and it won with the Switch against the PS4.

Sony still has the number one seller of all time in the PS2. The Switch needs to sell about 30 million more units to surpass that. It will all come down to when Nintendo announces their next new console.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Brand Momentum Has Been Flat Since 2018, Says Sony

kingbk

Sony does a great job creating interactive movies. I'll give them that. Every now and then, they create great video games like Spiderman, Ratchet & Clank and Gran Turismo, but for great interactive movies like God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, and more, nobody is a better brand in that space than Sony.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Brand Momentum Has Been Flat Since 2018, Says Sony

kingbk

@Krysus No, mobile gaming is not "the future." I heard mobile gaming was going to end consoles back in 2014. We're almost 10 years later, and consoles are still being produced. Major games like Tears of the Kingdom would not function on a mobile device. There is still a place for consoles and if consoles do get phased out, likely the next step is a streaming box or discless box like the Xbox Series S. Yes, casuals who love Candy Crush or Match Three now will play those on their phones or tablets over a console, but the console space is still massive and it's not going anywhere.

Re: Soapbox: Obstinate And Addictive - Playing Final Fantasy For The First Time In 2023

kingbk

I played the original Final Fantasy a few years ago when I got the NES Classic. I liked it, but it definitely has aged. It's quite a bit more challenging than the other FF games to come after it, despite it taking a much shorter amount of time to complete. I prefer the SNES games over the original. I enjoyed this series through X, though X has perhaps the most annoying protagonist in a video game in Titus. I lost interest in the series when it turned into more of an MMO game. Still blows my mind that Square created the game as their swan song to making video games (hence the "final fantasy" name) and now they are about to release Final Fantasy XVI. Unbelievable.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

kingbk

@NewAdvent The Steam Deck and that other thing that just came out (the Asus device) are competing with gaming laptops more than they are competing with Nintendo or PlayStation/Xbox. It's a more niche audience. The Steam Deck is more of giving PC gamers the power of laptop gaming on a portable handheld device. I tried it out. It's cool, but the battery life is bad and while portable, it's not the most fun device to play as a handheld as it's a little large and gets hot fast. Also, with certain games, you have to "tinker" with the device to even get them running. Most casual gamers don't want to do all of that. The Steam Deck is great for the PC gamer who doesn't want to haul around a Dell laptop for his/her gaming needs.

Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be

kingbk

I still have plenty of games to catch up on my Switch. I have an Xbox Series S and while there are some great titles like Elden Ring and Psychonauts 2 that I know will never come to the Switch, I'm still playing my Switch a lot more. At the end of the day, it comes down to playing fun games in the most convenient way, and in that regard, Nintendo hands down still dominates. Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm pumped for the next Nintendo console, but I'm savoring this time with what has become my favorite console of all time, the Switch.

Re: Nintendo's Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom TV Ad Might Be Its Best One Ever

kingbk

As a middle aged man about the same age as the actor in the commercials, this resonated with me. I still love video games, but working full time, being married, supporting a family cuts the time down when I can play. That's why I love the Switch so much. It has knocked down the barriers to when I can play. It's perfect for nighttime when my wife wants to watch something on Netflix and I can pull the Switch off the dock and play an hour or two of something.

Also the ad touches on the truth that video games aren't just kid toys anymore. Adults more than ever are playing video games.

Re: As Switch Momentum Slows, Nintendo Expects Further Sales Decline Next Year

kingbk

At 125 million units, the Switch is at a level I think no one expected. It's going to take 29 million more units to overtake the DS and 30 million to overtake the PS2. They are projecting that it will sell 15 million units this year. So that takes it up to around 140 million by the end of the year. Then let's say that drops down to 10 million next year and then 7 million the year after. Boom, you become the best selling console of all time.

The fact they are still projecting 15 million units for year number six is insane. That's still a ton of units!

I only see a price drop happening when the next console is launched, which I believe will be late 2024-early 2025.

Re: It's Official, E3 2023 Has Been Cancelled

kingbk

@sd7232 Not sure if a crash is going to happen, but it feels like the video game industry is heading for a "correction." The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have been overall disappointing, despite a few good games, and the audience for online free to play games is starting to crater. eSports is realizing that the audience for people to watch others play video games isn't as large as they might have thought. More and more, studios release a handful of AAA titles over the years, with many of them not landing with players. Consolidation, such as the Microsoft acquisition of Activision/Blizzard, which WILL happen, don't kid yourselves, only continues to stifle creativity, choice and variety.

I'm still enjoying the hobby, but I do see all the red flags as well.

Re: It's Official, E3 2023 Has Been Cancelled

kingbk

Trade shows are still a thing and they aren't going away anytime soon. GDC, PAX, CES, Comic Con, all still very much alive and events that gaming companies attend. So the whole "COVID changed everything" narrative is in the past. Most people have "moved on" from it (despite the fact it's still a thing, but ya know...)

It's just this one is too expensive, in an inconvenient location, and mostly announcements that are much easier to do for a lot less money via streaming.
