Re: Mario Kart World Has Been Updated To Version 1.4.0, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

jbrodack

I've had fun with Mario Kart World but it does seem like a step back from MK8 in some ways and they don't seem to fully understand or care what the fans want.

Hopefully the intermissions are better now. I don't mind them that much but it's crazy that they don't make it easy to just have a normal mario kart race without them.

The free roam open world does still seem kinda half baked and hard to find stuff.

The main mode they really nailed is the knockout mode. Takes great advantage of the open world concept, is really intense and is just a lot of fun.

Re: Random: One GameStop Apparently Stapled Receipts To Brand New Switch 2 Boxes, And Guess What Happened...

jbrodack

@sethfranum wasn't really meant to be a formal debate with facts and was my opinion.

But the facts are that there's no reports of this happening anywhere else. Customer satisfaction at gamestop is consistently low. The stock was enough of a joke that people made money buying it and manipulating the market. The employees hassle you to join their paid rewards program and try to get you to preorder. The employees usually know nothing about games besides new releases. They used to give you "new" games that were already opened.

Amazon is better cause of convenience and price. Just cause a store is considered "retro" doesn't mean they don't have new games as well. So yes they do carry new Nintendo products and have better service as well as community events. Gamestop does NOTHING for the video game community and is better off gone and forgotten.

Re: Review: Dodonpachi DaiOuJou Blissful Death Re:Incarnation (Switch) - Poetic Bullet-Hell Perfection

jbrodack

Great review. Might be the only shmup I've seen get a perfect score. I love shmups but in many bullet hell games it's hard for me to see my hitbox while also concentrating on all the bullets. I've considered importing one of the m2 shottriggers before and might end up doing for this release.

I also appreciate the reviewers perspective on Ikaruga. It's a really good game but the mainstream game site's treatment of it always irked me. Every shmup would get compared to it and would get dismissed as boring or derivative if it didn't have some gimmick to match the polarity of Ikaruga.

Re: Review: Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise Of The Dragons - Likeable, But Lacks Its Peers' Punch

jbrodack

After patches this is easily in the top 5 of beat em ups available on switch. While something like how visceral a game is can definitely be subjective I don't think the game is lacking in that area and the original final fight is the only beat em up that comes to my mind where that was a huge part of the appeal.

The roguelite focus with many unlocks helps this one standout even though shredders revenge added a roguelite mode. Plus it has it's own feel and approach to the genre due to its developer who made streets of red. I feel like the reviewer left a lot out by not mentioning their previous game as it's basically a prequel to this in terms of mechanics. They've refined their approach here and made it work with the double dragon world. Definitely give it a try even if some reviews are lukewarm about it.

Re: Talking Point: How Does Microsoft's Purchase Of Activision Blizzard Impact Nintendo?

jbrodack

I hate this kind of everything under one company monopoly and makes me want to support smaller devs more. Feel the same way about Disney.

Console manufacturers used to find smaller talented devs to bring under their wing and develop unique games. Now it's just buy the biggest publishes out there and take over everything. Didn't Microsoft have anti trust lawsuits in windows 98 days?

Re: Random: Uh-Oh, Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' Is Generating A Lot Of Dislikes

jbrodack

Definitely incredibly overpriced for what you get. You get some old games that you can't keep. Woo hoo. Other services at least offer new games as their freebies. I could maybe see a $10 increase in price but $30 is insane. I already own the genesis collection and the Konami collections with contra and castlevania so the genesis games don't offer anything.

I really can't imagine many people buying this.

Re: Tetris Effect: Connected Is Dropping Onto Nintendo Switch Soon

jbrodack

Great game. Was playing on my new laptop with a 4k hdr oled screen and looks amazing. I'd expect s bit of a graphical downgrade on the switch but should still be great.

It's funny I played Lumines on switch and thought it was better than tetris. Now the same person remade tetris but possibly even better than Lumines.

Re: Review: Burnout Paradise Remastered - Thrilling Open-World Racing Tempered By Blurry Visuals And A High Price

jbrodack

I tried the steam version and it's a mess requiring EAs Origin software as drm and crashing constantly. So the switch version is better in that it actually works.

One of the few times I got a race working I realized the whole open world isn't for me. Minimal guidance combined with super fast racing equals me getting lost easily. It's nice they made it a detailed open world with bridges and everything but if you take a wrong turn you're stuck on that bridge and not where you're supposed to go. I prefer burnout 3. I like going fast and not having to worry about navigating.

Re: Review: Aerial_Knight's Never Yield - A Super Stylish Yet Straightforward Runner

jbrodack

@AvianBlue

Sid Meier's Civilization is the only game you referenced to bear the name of the developer. The only other one I can think of that you missed is American Mcgee's Alice

The others are paid for branding using famous names to get people to play it. Mike Tyson certainly didn't develop punch out. In fact once his licensing deal ended they had to take his name off. Licensing a famous person and using a dev name is completely different. And actually the other devs made or were a big part of making other games before they started using their name in their games. So there was some branding there. Aeriel Knight is right now the only one I can think of that branded his name on his first game. It's a bold move that I'm not completely against.

Re: Review: Aerial_Knight's Never Yield - A Super Stylish Yet Straightforward Runner

jbrodack

I feel like the advertising for this is selling the developer more than the gameplay. Indie success stories are nice to see especially a primarily one man game. And at this time I can expect more people wanting this new developer to succeed.

But there just doesn't seem to be much to it. Earlier runners like the original bit trip or canabalt did more with more basic yet more refined graphics. Doesn't bring anything new to the genre besides the style and music. And unfortunately messes up some things needed in the genre like tight controls. It's not terrible. It's a passion project like you'd expect on itch io or steam. Hopefully the dev either continues to work on patching the game to refine it or takes what he learned and makes a better game. There's been developers that have released games that weren't amazing at release but got better later on.

Re: This Christmas, We're Getting A NES-Like Console That Plays Physical Carts

jbrodack

@hadrian I don't get what you were expecting with xenocrisis? The game was primarily designed as a mega drive game and has full dual stick style controls on the evercade plus save states. I'd want the original mega drive version most.

As for other games you're probably wishing you got arcade versions of games and those are in the works.

Re: Review: Blizzard Arcade Collection - Dig Into The Vaults Of The Creator Of Warcraft And Overwatch

jbrodack

@Noelemahc I'd agree that while it's not as good of an adventure as flashback as an action game this works great and has a feel that I haven't seen in that kind of game before.

The question about whether it's censored or not is kinda off. The snes version had no blood. The 32x had some and the pc version which isn't included had a lot of blood. Those versions are true to the original but definitive seems to be just the snes version with a map and some borders. An option for blood would have been nice and still probably wouldn't have pushed it to an M by today's standards.

Re: Review: Blizzard Arcade Collection - Dig Into The Vaults Of The Creator Of Warcraft And Overwatch

jbrodack

Wait is there no saving at all in the definitive rock n roll racing? Or is it limited to checkpoints?

It's a shame they didn't go further with some of the definitive editions. I understand not getting saves states and such since I'm guessing these versions are kind of a new port and no longer emulated roms of snes and Genesis. Though if they went to the trouble of doing whole new ports you'd think they would add more while they're at it. New tracks or weapons would have been great. The 32x blackthorne levels added to the snes version would have made sense since that's what they did with lost vikings.

The whole new presentation of rock n roll racing is cool though. The loss of a track kinds sucks though. And I have to admit there's still a charm to the snes renditions of the tracks over the real versions.

Re: Review: Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX + - A Slightly Disappointing Port Of A Modern Arcade Classic

jbrodack

@kepsux yeah I've had to look up things a bunch of times to get things straight. Because there's also an android and ios version of the game which I believe is the original psp version with some enhancements.

This version is still great but it's just that there was already a perfect version that came out. It seemed expensive at the time but it had both the arcade experience and a home experience fully fleshed out. You still get the perfect arcade experience here but you're missing out on that home content. And the content exclusive to this version doesn't seem to even nearly make up for what's lost.

Re: Review: Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX + - A Slightly Disappointing Port Of A Modern Arcade Classic

jbrodack

Also I have to say that while the 3000 stages of Chronicle arcade mode sound like a ton of content and better than the under 200 of chronicle savior mode the CS mode is definitely superior. You can still have fun with chronicle but there's no progression of difficulty just a random assortment of stages, most of which you can just credit feed your way through and still get credit. While there are no continues in CS mode so you have learn how to beat the levels properly, there is a progression in difficulty as you go on and you can purchase the ability to choose a ship for every level. It really helps you work on your shmup skills, and feels like a full fledged well developed console mode even though it's a lot of remixed content like the chronicle mode. It's done in a smart way.

Re: Review: Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX + - A Slightly Disappointing Port Of A Modern Arcade Classic

jbrodack

I already have the steam version and it's it possibly my favorite shmup ever. Having both the arcade tightly designed 2 screen arcade mode and the expansive content of the chronicle saviours mode is amazing. 1 dlc purchase unlocks a dlc section with a bunch of CS mode stages.

I was curious if the additions would make this worth a double dip but the event mode stages seem to be the only new content and seem to be nothing special compared to the huge amount of stages already in the game. Still a great game if haven't had it before.

Re: Blizzard Arcade Collection Announced For Nintendo Switch, Out Today On The eShop

jbrodack

These are actually by far my favorite Blizzard games. Used to play rock n roll racing with my brother all the time. Impressive that they put together definitive editions and bonus materials instead of just throwing some roms together. Especially the modern update of rock n roll racing. Unfortunately it seems one of my favorite songs was lost. Still awesome they did this.

Re: Don't Buy Devil Engine, Say Game's Artist And Musician

jbrodack

I really don't think the artists can legally decide that their work is being sold without their consent now. It would be a massive undertaking to change all the art and music. Their statement also seems very unprofessional and only makes me want to buy the game more for fear of it being taken off the market. They are free to say don't support the developer though.

The developers response seems legit. Unless the artists were never paid at all I don't think they have a case.
