Re: Review: Hoopworld (WiiWare)

jbrodack

Nicely done review. I looked into this game and it seemed a bit more interesting in its early xbla form with the courts more varied and much different than normal basketball courts.

Also, once I heard about the waggle controls I lost a lot of interest. Why not at least give an option of "classic" controls?

Anyway, still looks like a decent game but could have been better with some tweaks.

Re: The War on DS Piracy may be Hard to Win, but Iwata Optimistic with 3DS

Homebrewers don't sell what they make. The people who made the homebrew channel are very against anyone making any money off of it and consider anything like that a scam.

People have been hacking devices, consoles, and computers for years and there is nothing wrong with that. There is both a lot of knowledge and practical application to be gained from that.

One positive step towards hacker acceptance I see from nintendo is letting the Retro City Rampage game on wiiware. It started out as a genuine NES homebrew that would have been mostly played on an emulator. Its these kinds of enthusiasts that keep retro gaming alive.

Not every programmer can get there game on wiiware as nintendo has a lot of requirements for that. Some programmers would just like to see a simple idea of theirs on their favorite home console but don't want to go through the trouble of making a commercial game.

At least in america I blame gamestop for a lot of the gaming industry's problems.

EULA are not standard contracts and you usually don't see them until after you bought it. Breaking them usually just makes you lose warranty and any support.

Anyway, piracy of new games is always bad but homebrew is definitely something different. To those that say just play pc games wouldn't you like to play some of those games on your tv? Computer companies usually don't have the same problem of working with hackers that say Nintendo has. Hackers are the ones who end up knowing the hardware better than anyone and if they didn't fight them most hackers would try to stop piracy. The pirates usually aren't the innovators and just take what people with more knowledge do.

I use homebrew and open systems whenever I can. I own a gp2x which is an open handheld console and have a linux and android mobile device called a smartq V5. I like being able to run anything I want on my devices or at least having some real choice and having some free options. If nintendo embraced homebrew to some extent with limited acess to the system and stopped region locking there would be much less reason to hack the system and pirates wouldn't even know what to do to pirate games.

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - July 2010

To clear things up about Ultimate 11 first off that is just the western name. Second, its only the home version with that name that is that rare. The arcade cart version (MVS) is a lot more common. People collect both types of games for neo geo.

Re: E3 2010: Wii's Upcoming Line-up

jbrodack

The wii lineup is not very good. Its mostly stuff we knew about and anything we didn't know about doesn't look all that great. Some pretty good first party games but barely anything 3rd party. They had been having strong 3rd party support but now it looks like I need to get a ps3.

Re: E3 2010: Kirby's Epic Yarn

jbrodack

This looks like crap. The characters aren't even colored in and I don't see kirby inhaling anything. Kirby was always cute and child friendly but this looks way to kiddy.

Re: Need For Speed in Hot Pursuit of Wii

Exient seems to have mainly developed mobile games with a nascar game on ps2 being the only console title I know about they made. Not really a good sign that they are being tapped to develop the wii version then. Hope its good though.

Re: Interviews: Marcin Kawa - Bloober Team

jbrodack

The two questions I'd like to see answered are the cost per episode (which they don't have final say on) and general release date.
The game does look cool and should be fun as long as it doesn't use too much waggle controls.
Wiiware is the perfect place for M rated wii games in my opinion. They are infamous for not selling all that well on the wii but with wiiware they don't need to as long as devs keep their costs down. Plus the more "hardcore" gamers are probably the type to play more wiiware than casual wii owners.

Re: The Nintendo Era is Over, Tweets Former Final Fantasy Scribe

jbrodack

Is what someone tweets really newsworthy? Twitter is kind of lame anyway and such a comment would only hold any weight as part of a longer interview. Maybe include the quote in an article that looks at the issue of whether apple products are going to take over handheld gaming.

Anyway, the ipad is barely portable and definitely can't fit in someone's pocket. Though whether the ipod touch and iphone can take over portable gaming is something worth discussing.

Re: Foxconn's High Suicide Rate to be Investigated by Nintendo

jbrodack

Thanks Nintendo Life for putting up a real life story like this. Some pieces of news I've kinda wondered why they even posted but though this wasn't direct game news definitely deserved to be posted.

Also, even though I love black humor and regularly laugh at messed up stuff some of the comments seemed a bit in bad taste. Not because I'm offended or trying to make like I'm better than anyone but because they imply that people really don't care and that gaming is more important than any real issues.

Anyway, high suicide rates are a sad thing and no one should have to deal with not being paid for the work they have done.

@adam your comments on this were very insightful and enjoyed the sarcasm. I agree about communism. In theory and Marxist writing it actually does sound good or at least more fair but any actual implementation of it like in China has been terrible.

Re: Nintendo Download: 1st & 2nd June 2010 (Japan)

jbrodack

I laughed at the "is this the end of the line for wiiware" part since as you said people always say nintendo is done with Virtual Console every time there are no new VC titles. The idea that the scheduling just worked out that way never seems to occur to most people.

Re: Miyamoto Loves it When Games Resonate

jbrodack

While I agree about big budget movies I don't see how that is an argument for less story. Though I guess it argues for a more vague fill in your own blanks story like say the bit.trip series. Though I don't really see galaxy as having that either. Oh well, as long as the games are fun.

Re: La Mulana Developers Discuss Religious and Rating Issues

jbrodack

I looks kind of wrong with the breasts covered. If they censor it might as well make a whole new statue.

Though it would be stupid if censored since I couldn't see these things giving the game any worse than a T rating. I don't think this game would appeal to anyone under 13 anyway.

Re: Review: Kung Fu Funk (WiiWare)

jbrodack

After seeing the trailer I knew this would be a 1. The theme isn't so bad but making a crappy minigame collection instead of well a kung fu beat em up was a terrible idea. Stickmen studios really needs to rethink things.

Re: DJ Shadow Sheds a Little Light on DJ Hero 2

jbrodack

If dj hero came out a while ago people would have been more excited about it. However, a lot of people are just tired of these types of music games now. I like the more creative music games like parappa, bit.trip, otocky, lets tap, rez, rhythm tengoku, and stuff like that.

Re: Fear the REAPER

Eternity child was released for PC a while back and was a disaster. The wiiware version was supposed to be the good version of that game but I guess trying to make something out of the flawed PC release has been a bit much for the developers of that version. Though it seems luc has been making out those devs to be bad.
That leaves one fairly well received iphone game for us to go on. And maybe the iphone game he just finished up. So we know he can put out iphone games.
Seems it might be best to just stick with the iphone games for him. Instead he's trying a really ambitious console game and a "controversial" game. He really should try to get something together with the current developers of wiiware eternity child so they can get done as a team effort instead of being "out of his hands" In any case a well brought together wiiware release should be his first order of concern just so games know he can get (hopefully) good games out there.

Anyway this little press release did nothing good for him as pretty much everyone has trouble getting excited about somethign from someone whos games often either don't get released or do horribly. Now people are having an even more negative opinion of the guy and his games.
