The history of Tetris will forever be entwined with Nintendo history, with the IP reaching stunning heights of popularity alongside the Game Boy, in particular. While we've had the exclusive Tetris 99 on Nintendo Switch, however, until now we've missed out on the most memorable evolution of the series in recent years.
That was resolved today with confirmation that Tetris Effect: Connected is coming to Switch on 8th October. Tetris Effect initially made its name on PlayStation 4 and particularly PSVR, with plenty being wowed by the combination of classic gameplay with intriguing visuals and an incredible soundtrack, representing Tetsuya Mizuguchi's vision for taking the gameplay forward (see Lumines Remastered for some of his other work). Tetris Effect: Connected is an expanded version that made its debut on Xbox in 2020, which adds online co-op and competitive modes; it'll be cross-platform online play on Switch, too.
It's a hugely popular and acclaimed take on the series, so it's great news that it's made its way to Switch.
Are you planning to pick up Tetris Effect: Connected on Nintendo Switch?

BIG big hype for this one. it's easily the most heartfelt and creative thing that's ever been done with the Tetris license.
so worth a double dip ❤
Can never have too much Tetris.
I'm going to play so much of this (again). Best Tetris game since the original. Hoping for a physical release.
This is the best reason yet to get the OLED. Its going to look so nice on that screen.
I thought this one would never land on a Nintendo system, so I'm really glad to see this.
I must get this one, even if it's not available physical.
Yes!! Wasn't expecting this on Switch. Having Tetris 99, Tetris Effect and Puyo Puyo VS Tetris games on one console makes it the ultimate Tetris machine.
Played the hell out of this when it came out on PS4. It's wildly therapeutic
Finally, It was about time.
Cross play is the reason I will get this. My brother already had the PS4 version so I'm gonna get this one to cross play against him across the country.
Didn't want a Switch OLED...until now. Grrr.
Finally, a new Tetris game! I'll be getting this for sure.
Tetris is still worthy of getting physically (I decided to get the physical version of Tetris 99), so if there's a physical version of Tetris Effect I'll get it. If not, oh well. Still getting it either way.
Tetris Effect was supposed to be transcendent with PSVR. Could we throw this into Labo VR and replicate the effect?
So, the Switch is going to be the ultimate Tetris machine. Tetris 99 for awesome hectic battle royale fun, Tetris & Puyo Puyo for anime characters and Tetris Effect for pure zen.
I‘m concerned that the framerate could be unstable, which would be a major issue.
I didn't like Tetris, but the music peaked my interests. Fun game!
WOW
I thought there was, like, no chance of this happening. I've wanted this on Switch for a while now.
Own the PS4 version, but I'll happily double dip for the Switch version.
SO VERY EASILY A DOUBLE DIP FOR ME! One of my favorite PS4/PS5 games.
It’s a fantastic game, I own it on the Xbox Series X. However, the game looks amazing at 120 FPS, and it’s a bummer that the Switch version will be capped at 60 FPS.
Holy eff YES. This game is fantastic. Simply the best Tetris game since Tetris DS.
Can someone please explain what makes this Tetris game so highly regarded? I've played many of them and the last ones I really got into were PuyoPuyo Tetris and Tetris99.
I love Tetris and am 100% excited to play this, however, is Tetris Effect really an Indie game?
Always there for more Tetris goodness, bring it on !
b..but... where are the puyos
: (
As @eatdogs says, why this game is so good? First of all, the field that you play is so small. It has so many graphics, effects around it that it's so annoying and disturbing. It's like you may have epilepsy. I don't know if you can concentrate..
I absolutely adore this game, gonna look amazing on the oled switch, cannot wait
@eatdogs
My head is burning with the same questions. Here I am trying to talk about Puyo Puyo Tetris and or NES Tetris and then people always bring the topic to this one game. I think it's overrated, if anything.
@GamingBread
Ironically, there has been a Tetris game released almost every year on the Switch.
2017 - Puyo Puyo Tetris
2019 - Tetris 99
2020 - Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
2021 - Tetris Effect
@Tandy255 Yeah, it's more a "third party" game than an "indie" game. But Nintendo doesn't have big third party game reveal streams.
Day one purchase.
Lol comes out the same dat metriod 5 comes out lol
Tetris is one of the few games that I play so often that a download version is preferred here.
I knew this was coming someday! Held off for a switch release for many years!
YES! I DON'T NEED OTHER GAMES!
Great game, have played it thoroughly on Gamepass....
@Darkyoshi98 And also the same day the Switch OLED comes out
I don't even care how much this costs. OMG, yes!
@ModdedInkling Huh! I never really noticed that. 2022 will be nice.
@iphys I don't really care either!
Woo, finally, been hearing about this for ages, so glad it's landing on Switch finally, though I do enjoy Tetris 99, so it'll have to really be good
Loved playing this on PSVR. My favorite VR experience. If I didn’t already have it, would be the definitive version of Tetris to own. Not worth a double dip though for the Switch.
This was fan-freakin'-tastic on the Oculus Quest. Happy to see a portable version.
Instant purchase. I hope a physical release is in the works.
I unfortunately will have to wait on this, as I want my first experience of this to be in VR.
I’ve been wanting this since it came out and there was no hints that it would ever come to Switch and when Tetris 99 came out I figured oh okay that’s it then I’m stuck with battle royale Tetris. I’m so glad this one is making its way over.
Tetris Effect is one of the best Tetris iterations ever. One of the few games I visit often on our PS4 nowadays. Definitely an insta-download for our Switch
This really brings me hope for Rez on Switch.
Wow! Super cool though I don't think any version will top the VR version.
@invictus4000 @Chlocean Maybe it has Labo-VR support (don't think so, but it could)
Got this on Xbox and I can not recommend it highly enough
@nkarafo You can both change the size of the playing field (tilt the right stick up/down during gameplay) and reduce effects (check settings)
Yeeeeess! One of my most-wanted ports for Switch! Wonderful news!!
Absolutely LOVE this on the PS4!
Similar to the the Tetris Effect, there's the Switch Effect where you dream about your favorite games coming to Nintendo Switch.
This game was among the most recurring dreams I had.
As much as I REALLY do not need a FOURTH Tetris game on the same bloody platform, I would consider this if they issue a physical release like they have for the PS4.
Otherwise, I'll likely pass on this, particularly as the price for a download is unlikely to be reasonably low enough to justify the expense (especially with Tetris 99's offline DLC being AU$15), and I already have three other games to scratch that Tetris itch (as I still play Tetris 99 regularly, and have already completed both Puyo Puyo Tetris games).
@sanderev You know, it is that small indie title that almost nobody has heard of - Tetris. 😝
Reading up on it, it does sound like it was developed by a small team that got the rights for the Tetris license. So, that is actually pretty neat.
I love this game . Another rebuy.
since I’m the kind of person that exclusively lives a “Nintendo life,” I never knew of the existence of this version of Tetris until today.
coincidentally, I recently started playing more Tetris 99 and was about to purchase the DLC content in that game. with today’s announcement, I’ll hold off on the DLC and wait for this version instead. can’t wait!
It's a good Tetris game I guess, (completed it on XSS) but several of the music tracks got on my t**s after a while – sudo-spiritual pop nonsense. Other tracks fair better, but you can't pick and choose, and have to listen to songs your sick of because that level is tied to that track.
@brunojenso Yeah, this one was a real disappointment for me on the musical side of things.
I've been a massive Mizuguchi fan, and have really admired his ear for musical accompaniment since he headed up SEGA Rally and Touring Car, and then of course Rez, Every Extend Extra, Lumines, Metoeos and Child of Eden. The music in Tetris Effect is just OK I guess, but all the 'indie' twang in the vocals drives me insane and is really, really off putting.
The game is pretty great, but as a fan of Mizuguchi's particular brand of synesthesia, I just can't get past the middling soundtrack with the annoying indie twang.
@sanderev I've got a PSVR but its cable was broken by a cat, but if it does come to LABO I HIGHLY recommend you give it a shot. This guy's other VR game, Rez Infinite, was transcendental.
I love this! I never expected myself to be much of a Tetris fan, but after picking up Puyo Puyo Tetris and spending quite a few games enjoying the Tetris side, I could see myself picking up Tetris Effect: Connected hands down. In fact, I'd say I most certainly became enthralled by it's soundtrack and visuals back when it first launched. And I still remember its main theme.
The Multiplayer + Raid boss aspects made me more then a little jealous too! So I'm very much looking forward to this. I just hope the price isnt too crazy.
@nkarafo @eatdogs So this game syncs the music to what happens on screen and your button inputs. It's hard to explain but the music and visuals help you get into that Tetris Zone where everything else leaves your mind and you just focus on the game. I find it really really relaxing and if I'm starting to get stressed out I try to find time to play a quick 10-15 minutes of it and that relaxes me.
If you've ever played Lumines or Rez it's by the same guy trying to achieve the same type of thing.
Great. DAY ONE for me!!
Very looking forward to this.
Omg be still my heart!
Gimme
Gimme
Gimme
Gimme
Gimme
I'm not the world's biggest Tetris fan, but if they include a VR mode for Labo goggles then I'm in.
Love Lumines.Wanted this on switch since it was announced.
This is going to look AMAZING on the Switch OLED
@AJB83 Yeah, most good game music doesn't make the mistake of being too vocal driven. Gaming generally requires repeated play of sections, areas, levels etc... If you have to hear a cheesy line over and over - not good. I'd have rather they used more minimal electronic stuff - Aphex Twin's softer tracks, Bonobo, Rival Consoles, Richie Hawtin, even Lamb kind of stuff where vocals are more subtle. As you can tell I'm rather out of date with my Artists, but there will be modern equivalents.
This game had some really great tracks, including some Nitin Sawhney like stuff, but also have some very 'talky' songs that thought they had something deep to say, but where actually complete shallow lyrically. That's what I struggled with. Still, no biggie, and I sure it'll have relatively mainstream success on Switch.
I can't believe it's finally coming. It came to almost every other platform and it feels fantastic to have it on Switch
I was hoping this would make it's way to Switch while I was playing it on Xbox One. Tetris 99 is great and all, but this is would definitely fill a gap in the Switch's library.
I know they won't, but I still hope they'll add an option to mount the unit on our heads to play VR-style like the PS4 version. Switch head mounts do exist... even if they aren't officially supported.
@idork99 While I mostly game on Nintendo consoles ( I do have a 360 and iPad) I at least try to keep up with what going on with Sony and Microsoft (and PC to some extent). I too have never heard of this version of Tetris. Judging by the trailer, it looks really fun
All this time I thought Tetris Effect was a PS4 VR exclusive. Apparently it's on Xbox which explains the cross play mention and also how it now comes to the Switch.
Well all right then.
I wonder if the effect is lessened without the VR?
Sadly, It is going to run like shh..
@Max_the_German Very valid concern, it does seem like lots of stuff goes on in this game in terms of particle rendering etc. Hope this performs well despite that. Fingers crossed.
This is the only game of the Indie Showcase we already know is great. Hopefully some of the rest pan out on release.
Finally! Been waiting for this to get to Switch for a while - my only concern will be frame-rate/latency, especially for classic mode (which is really the only mode I'm interested in...) You'd think with it being on Quest that it ought to be good though.
I had this on Game Pass for ages.
This game will feel weird to people whom played any Tetris as brick rotation moves in wrong directions and doesn't make sense.
Just a warning. Don't expect Tetris 99 movement in this one.
@Ventilator What? Just hit A instead of B or vice versa. You've been able to rotate in either direction in every half decent tetris game since the very first one, including Tetris Effect and Tetris 99. I'm a clockwise rotator.
@sanderev they did last year with the partner showcases...
Great game. Was playing on my new laptop with a 4k hdr oled screen and looks amazing. I'd expect s bit of a graphical downgrade on the switch but should still be great.
It's funny I played Lumines on switch and thought it was better than tetris. Now the same person remade tetris but possibly even better than Lumines.
@brunojenso
One of the reasons that I really enjoyed Tetris on the PS3 was the fact that you could use whatever music you had downloaded on your PS3. I loved the ability to customize my own music.
@citizen_zane Yeah, custom music is an area where Sony has always excelled. I remember even the PS1 could do it with the first WipEout game. You just swapped the disc to any CD you wanted after the game had loaded. It was brilliant to play WipEout to idk, Transvision Vamp maybe! I'm not sure I've seen it on any other non-Sony console actually.
But yes, Tetris Effect NEEDS to let you cut or change tracks you don't gel with. It'd be my favourite Tetris if I didn't have to listen to certain BS lyrics again and again.
