Popular anime streaming service Crunchyroll recently launched on Nintendo Switch, with some positive first impressions to boot. Now, the service has gotten a heck of a lot bigger with the absorption of Funimation and most of its related content.
The change is effective immediately, with the move encompassing Funimation, its subsidiary Wakanim, and Crunchyroll's own VRV service. The company states that this will create the world's largest anime library all under one roof. As a small caveat, however, the site's FAQ section states that 80% of the Funimation library will move across, so there may be a few movies or shows that have not yet made the jump.
What does this mean for current Funimation subscribers? Well, simply put, it might be time to move over to Crunchyroll, as the former will only be receiving new episodes of continuing series. The good news, though, is that Crunchyroll is offering a special deal of 60 days of Crunchyroll Premium for free for anyone who recently signed up for Funimation, Wakanim, or VRV. Qualified customers will be sent an email with the offer very shortly.
Have you tried the Crunchyroll service on Switch yet? Will this move convince you to sign up? Let us know!

They added a lot of good stuff. Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic, and I can't recommend it enough. Same for Cowboy Bebop.
That said, not everything has been transferred over from Funimation to Crunchyroll just yet. Some notable anime missing:

Dragon Ball GT
Code Geass
Gurren Lagann
Trigun
Outlaw Star
Assassination Classroom
Bayonetta
Hellsing
Hellsing Ultimate
Eden of the East
Afro Samurai
Guyver
Desert Punk
Samurai 7
Akira
Black Lagoon
Full Metal Panic
Wolf's Rain
Golden Boy
Sonny Boy
Deca Dence
Deadman Wonderland
Panty & Stocking

Gangsta
Space Dandy
Mieruko-chan
Soul Eater
Ranma 1/2
Serial Experiments Lain
Samurai Champloo
Spice and Wolf
Tenchi Muyo
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Edit: Added Gurren Lagann and got rid of Toilet Bound Hanako-kun.
Can't believe Dr. Anna May got her collection to be THAT big...
I use Crunchyroll for Wii U. It crashes a lot, but none of the ads load either!
Except for Dragon Ball and Bleach most of the anime on Crunchyroll I've never even heard of. Because of its availability on Switch I'm really curious now.
Sounds like a heck of a good deal.
But I already have plenty of anime DVDs/Blu-rays that I haven't watched yet, so, I should get around to those first.
Eh, still prefer my anime to be in physical form, like my games.
@ZZalapski Yeah, I wonder if the Funimation brand will at least stick around for dubbing and home releases. Crunchyroll is notoriously bad for physical releases of their anime. I can count the number on my fingers.
If only the app was a lot more stable.
Dont know how many times it has crashed halfway through shows or the subtitles has gone out of sync on both my Switch and Kindle Fire Stick.
I want to use this as a chance to jump into anime, I have very limited scope. I watched DBZ, Pokemon and Sailor Moon when I was young, and season one of attack on titan. And I guess the cliché movies like Akira and Ninja Scroll. haha.
If I signed up for Crunchy Roll, do any anime aficionados recommend a jump off point for a newbie?
Uh oh, monopoly alert. Although, this would explain why so many of the anime I was watching were removed from Netflix.
Surprised that it wasn't the other way around, what with Funimation being the older, more established brand (that, and it was Sony, who already owned Funi, who acquired Crunchyroll & not the other way around).
Not a big deal either way though, so I'll have to move over at some point or another.
I'm mostly curious if they'll work out how to handle merging content from a Funimation account into an already existing Crunchyroll account by the time all the details of the merge are worked out and finalized.
I'm currently actively subscribed to Crunchyroll and have queues and bookmarks, and ideally I would want to be pulling all my owned digital licenses from my Funimation account into the other. Worst case scenario I think I'll just need to abandon my existing Crunchyroll account and create/use a Funimation-based migration account instead, as I don't want those licenses to fall into the ether. It's currently not clear if merging the two accounts together will be possible (or when the digital libraries will be moved off Funimation and accessible in Crunchyroll, although apparently they are aware of and working on that issue).
@itslukec Highly recommend watching the rest of Attack on Titan, it's amazing! My other personal favourites are Evangelion & Death Note. I've recently started watching Demon Slayer too & am really enjoying it 😊
I want to know how this is going to work for long time Funimation paid accounts and Crunchyroll paid accounts. Some of us have subscribed to both for a while now. Are they completely pulling shows/movies/etc. off of the Funimation service and moving them only over to Crunchyroll? If I read above correctly, only Crunchyroll will continue to be updated with new episodes and such from this point onwoard, leaving Funimation only with older, no-longer-updating shows? Why is the free Crunchyroll offer only available to those who have recently subscribed to Funimation, and not those of us who have supported the service for years? I have a lot of questions about this move and am concerned about my paid accounts.
@Z-Core Take my like.
Not everything has moved.. I'll be having to keep my Funimation subscription until it's all been moved. I'm hoping the older shows i have yet to watch don't get forgotten during this move, lol. There's also a problem with Crunchyroll where some shows are tagged as Dubbed but don't include one. They need to really work hard on cleaning everything up this month and making everything more streamlined.
@JustMonika That is the main reason I went with Funimation. I like subs but sadly with my limited free time I need the dub version of shows since I primarily watch them while doing something else (cooking, cleaning etc.).
@Ade117 Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun was moved. They are missing the dubs for several shows that got transferred like Zombie Land Saga. Here's some shows I'm waiting to get moved..
Eden of the East
Chaos;Head
Terror in Resonance
Keijo!
Mieruko-chan
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
After School Dice Club
OniAi
Gurren Lagann
Welcome to the NHK
Is this a Zombie?
School Rumble
We Without Wings
Shuffle!
Love Live! (All 4 series)
My Senpai is Annoying
Talentless Nana
Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut
Haganai
Panty and Stocking with Gerterbelt
Girls' Frontline
Snow White with the Red Hair
Chobits
Hensuki
First Love Monster
Worldend
Heaven's Lost Property
Interviews with Monster Girls
@RubyCarbuncle What do you like? I'll be your guide since I'm the world's biggest anime fanatic. Outside of work I spend every second absorbing anime and the anime industry alongside visual novels and video games.
@itslukec Start with Eromanga Sensei
@TrixieSparkle They're saying everything is supposed to be moved this month. I'm worried that alot of older titles will be lost though.
Yeah, I like Funimation because I prefer to wait for a show's "uncut" home video version to be uploaded, while (aside from shows they co-produce I assume) Crunchyroll's deals only extend to the network broadcast versions of shows (that's why they're mostly subbed only, and retain any broadcast censorship that may be in place).
So hopefully all of Funi's uncensored content gets moved over in full.
@Ade117 So basically, most of the good stuff is missing. Figures.
Now Crunchyroll needs to get their doodoo together and fix their entire system that has been broken for years. Hopefully Sony will give them an ultimatum to fix this or replace the entire development team. But considering the state of the playstation website when the PS5 launched, I have very little hope to see any improvement to Crunchyroll.
If you want a truly cultured anime experience then I recommend to everyone here the following titles..
Haganai
To Love Ru
Eromanga Sensei
Oreimo
My Dress-Up Darling
A Sister's All You Need
OniAi
My Wife is the Student Council President
Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!
Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro
Date A Live
Rent-a-Girlfriend
Heaven's Lost Property
Cat Planet Cuties
Ladies Versus Butlers!
Monster Musume
Nakaimo: My Little Sister is Among Them
Love Tyrant
Magical Sempai
Rosario+Vampire
Food Wars!
DearS
Girls Bravo
High School DxD
Domestic Girlfriend
Yamada's First Time
The Testament of Sister New Devil
Trinity Seven
World's End Harem
Girlfriend, Girlfriend
Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest
Monster Girl Doctor
Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend
How to NOT Summon a Demon Lord
School Days
Nisekoi
@RR529 I just watched OniAi and Haganai and they were both uncensored and showed nudity. I think it's just in recent years that they've gotten strict about censoring nudity because those are older shows after all. Sentai Filmworks are the kings of releasing uncensored anime on blu ray. I'm happy I live only 20 minutes from them and I'm friends with alot of voice talent that works there. I'm hoping they license World's End Harem so it gets an uncensored blu ray release here.
@JustMonika, yeah, I subscribed to HiDive awhile ago as well & watched Triage X, Momokyun Sword, & Is it Wrong to Try & Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? (though only the first actually had any actual nudity), but I really couldn't justify subscribing to both that & Funi at the same time, and since the latter is simulcasting YashaHime (as a big InuYasha fan I don't mind to simulcast) it got to stay.
Assuming they've been moved over I'd add Tenchi Muyo!, Senran Kagura, Keijo!!!!!, & Bikini Warriors to your "cultured" list, lol.
@JustMonika Thanks for the reply. Can't believe I forgot to include Gurren Lagann. Such a classic.
I will be moving over to Crunchyroll for sure. There are still some shows on Funimation and until they move over or are removed I will keep my account. Hopefully they do get moved over to Crunchyroll though.
As a long time crunchyroll subscriber this is great news to me
@Ade117 I hope Funimation keeps dubbing and releasing Blu-Rays. The Funimation releases are usually sparse on extra content but I like to buy the shows I enjoy for keeps.
@JustMonika That's a hard one but I guess anything that features plenty of action.
I'm excited for the idea of it all being in one place but Crunchyroll is more expensive and their messaging for what is happening to existing FUNimation customers is poor. I have a year sub but with no new shows coming that is not what I signed up for (really thought FUNimation would have been the one sticking around) and no way of getting my money back?
None of the shows I'm interested in are there yet, like Haruhi.
I used to watch the Funimation Channel back in 2015, so it'll be nice to look back at some of those titles.
@JustMonika @DreamlandGem Thank you for the recommendations! I will finish Attack on Titan but I needed a break, when people get caught by the Titans its grizzly haha.
@Ade117 Dang. That list has a LOT of what I initially subbed to Funimation for. Does Tenchi just include the original series, or does it include the various alternate series as well? I just watched a really good retrospective on Universe, and was thinking of watching it.
@loyalroyal1989 Me too. I had mainly got the sub so that I could watch the classics, though (mainly for DBZ specifically). Still hoping that they'll manage to be able to have existing Funimation memberships transfer over somehow. If they don't, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of lawsuit or another over this.
@JustMonika Thank you so much for mentioning High School DxD! Such a good series, and it was my very first!
@alexybubble I believe all Tenchi series have yet to be transferred over. Here is an article of what's been brought over so far: https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2022/03/01/funimation-titles-now-available-on-crunchyroll?utm_source=editorial_cr&utm_medium=carousel_2&utm_campaign=brand-announcement_en&referrer=editorial_cr_carousel_2_brand-announcement_content
The only anime I am currently watching is "My dress up darling".
@eaglebob345 It already was a monopoly, Sony owns both Crunchyroll and Funimation. It was only a matter of time before they consolidated the services into one big package.
It was only a matter of time, I just didn't think it would be so soon!
I was already a Crunchy roll supporter, so this news makes me happy.
Didn't bother with it for Switch yet, but since the change happened I went ahead and added Crunchyroll to my Roku. Seems more stable than Funimation's app, at any rate.
If they add the English dub of the P5 anime, this would be PERFECT
@OwenGamer22 Persona 5 on switch! Finally!
Still doesn't take it knock on effect that to stream without ads you need the Premium packages to watch with no ads.
@RR529 Actually all of those are on my cultured list as well. Since Sentai Filmworks is local I usually just buy all of their stuff on blu ray but I am considering HiDive once everything has merged from Funimation to Crunchyroll and I can drop the subscription. I also have Netflix because they have alot of stuff too like Komi Can't Communicate, JoJo, Sailor Moon Eternal, Arcane and so forth.
@jorel262 Some of their older shows might vanish so I'll probably have to buy them and add them to my large collection.
@RubyCarbuncle Vivy: Fluorite Eyes Song is the best of 2021 for certain. Check it out this instant and come back to thank me later. The animation is off the charts.
@Alex90 Hell yes.. Marin is definitely going to be best girl of 2022. Watched episode 5 yesterday because I'm catching whenever a dubbed episode drops each week.
@AlienX Haruhi is God.. nowadays it's hard to find anyone that knows her and it's even more funny because I just became an anime fanatic in 2018. I'm hoping for another season since that new light novel dropped last year. I can dream you know?
@OwenGamer22 Yeah I'm hoping for that too! But knowing Aniplex, they'll forever gate it behind the $300 blu rays, lol
@LuigibrineTheGreat High School DxD is good but I still think Date A Live is alot better.. in fact it's my favorite series and I'm at a fever pitch since season 4 airs next month.
@ATaco That's sad and so much worse. 😢
@Ade117 Finally, The World Ends With You: The Animation on crunchyroll. It's so much more convenient this way rather than having to pay 3 anime subscriptions and switching between apps.
@JustMonika Maybe you're right. Don't know why they wouldn't move 100% of their content over eventually if they have the streaming rights still to those shows. But it's business.
@RR529 my guess is that Funimation is only available in North America, but Crunchyroll is worldwide, so it makes sense to retire Funimation.
@JustMonika Yeah, she is such a kind and sweet girl, having good genes and her "features" is well animated. Best girl of 2022 for sure. I just wish My dress up darling was like Horimiya.
@JustMonika Will do and thanks.
@JustMonika Wait... Date A Live is FINALLY getting another season??? I've been out of the main anime loop for a while, but that's one I have always hoped for! Date A Live is such a good show! And apart from the bits of titillation, its actually pretty wholesome as well. lol... Thanks for the news!!!
Wasn't Funimation the company that made weird changes to dubs, like adding GamerGate references out of nowhere?
@Highlar I've been waiting patiently since I became a Date A Live fan last year!
https://youtu.be/UrEHRmiGEa4
I thought it was going to be the other way around
@alexybubble
I emailed support and they have said that they will transfer my remaining time to Crunchyroll will see how that works but a good sign. So I would recommend giving them an email.
I'm also just starting to reengage with anime after years of being out of touch. I'm in the middle of Made in Abyss, which is FANTASTIC but sadly not available on Crunchyroll. If it helps anyone, here's what my Crunchyroll watchlist looks like at the moment:
Berserk (Dark Souls fans will feel at home here)
Kaiji
The Promised Neverland
Death Note
Mind Game (movie)
The Place Promised In Our Early Days (movie)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (already seen and loved this - don't be fooled by appearances, it's a brutal deconstruction of magical girl tropes)
Kino's Journey
Boogiepop Phantom
Time of Eve
Gave it a shot, but it's more Cringyroll than Crunchyroll for me.
