Japan for me this time, although I think both are excellent. Love the palette and intensity of the North American one and the dramatic shading, pose, and style of the Japanese one a bit more.
@Rocketfella This game looks very interesting! I'm gonna recommend it to a friend who's always looking for fun co-op games to play with her partner, and now it's on my list as well. Thanks for the tip!
Just a heads-up, though, it says above that submissions are only for the community features, not for games they'll review, and they have to be made through the Contact page. I wanted to let you know because I think this is a quality idea for a submission (though I'm new here, so grain of salt and all that).
@dartmonkey Heads up, you're missing a comma between BZZZT and Haiku the Robot. Does it say something about me or our hobby that I had almost no problem reading it as the full name of one very weird game?
Started The Ivalice Chronicles and dang, the presentation is fantastic. I have the original, the PSP release, and the better-than-you're-likely-assuming mobile port and I've never seen this game look so slick. The pixel artwork is great but honestly, I keep staring at the textures on buildings and rocks! The devs took so much care to mimic that lo-fi PSX look but it's so clean. It would've been easy to "upgrade" them so much that they no longer blend with the 2D characters or even oddly upstage them, but the artists showed careful restraint and I love it.
The people who make great modern interpretations and remakes of older titles often say that they try to recreate not how the source material played, but how it made you feel when you played it. Similarly, this new version of FF Tactics doesn't look exactly like the original, but rather how I remember the original looking in my rapt, reverent mind. Very cool.
@Liam_Doolan Heads up, typo in the update: "Kirya's."
I'm a little bummed I played 3 not too long ago. It wouldn't be worth it for me to play Kiwami 3 anytime soon, no matter how good it looks (and likely will be, based on the quality of the other Kiwamis). Maybe someday!
@OHB123 This was quite well-written. Very evocative, great use of sensory metaphor, and the oscillation between playful and reverent was just right. I think this is the first time I've read you (though I may have done so at Eurogamer at some point, who knows?). Well done!
@Yosher Obviously you don't properly appreciate the distinction between the many Gokus. I, a pedant and true fan, will now help you out without your consent. Lesson 1 (of 32): early Gokus were largely of an entirely different manufacturing process...
Ooh, I heard about this one not too long ago! I like dungeon crawlers and I've wanted to learn some Japanese beyond "Weeaboo desu" (which means "Nice to meet you," I've been told). Sounds like a fun excuse to finally give it a shot.
I really enjoyed Rune Factory 4, but lost all my 3ds saves when my system was stolen last year. I haven't decided yet if I should start over in 4 Special, jump to 5, or check out Azuma first. If they keep improving the game, they're going to make it harder for me to decide, haha!
These look pretty cool, unlike some video game sneakers I've seen in the past.
Sidenote: do the NintendoLife authors set the site's color per article or is it associated with a tag or something? It's interesting that it changes depending on the content.
I'm with the others who wish these patch notes were less vague, but mostly because I'm one of those weirdos who finds patch notes kind of interesting, haha.
Dang, that's good monster design. And framing it in the shot like that, blocking the door it clearly had to stoop to get through because of its size... creepy. Hope the game's good! These new REs have been fun, but mixed bags in my opinion.
@Yalloo Close. Part 2 is out on other platforms already. Part 3 is currently in production. And yeah, they've expanded on the story greatly, including reimagining some things and fleshing out smaller stories. The extra content of Intergrade, for example, shows us what one of the main characters was doing before meeting the rest of the cast, whereas that was mostly left to our imagination in the original. The core story is the same, however.
@Yalloo I think you're getting things a bit mixed up. The remake of 7 is ongoing, in three parts. Part 1 came out years ago on ps4, then got enhanced for newer platforms with some more content that bridges parts 1 and 2 (Intergrade). So basically, the remake of 7 isn't done yet, since the last part hasn't been released.
Holy carp 🎏 I was NOT prepared for the price or the size of these things. I've never been much of a statue/figure collector, so I had nothing to insulate my ignorant mind from the shock...
Honestly, the European/NA art shares some design elements with those cheap shovelware puzzle collections you used to see on the Wii. If I didn't know it was related to Layton, I wouldn't give it a second glance on a shelf.
I don't think the Japanese box is great, but it at least looks like it has some personality.
@Ooyah Hey, I also picked up Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection because of that article! It's been fun (and brutal).
As for the mental health stuff, I feel you (some days it's just... well, you know). But you do deserve happiness! Let's wait until you have at least three or four game platforms before we consider it might be some kind of issue, haha.
Just finished up The Making of Karateka (loved it), now finally checking out the Plus in Sonic Mania Plus and jumping into Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. The former is as great as I knew it'd be and the latter is as great as I'd hoped it'd be, so I'm eating well this weekend! Hmm, guess I've been in a retro mood lately, haha.
@DennyCrane Interesting. I've been considering checking this kind of game out, as a horror game fan, but I'm trying to separate the quality ones from the cheap trend-chasers, you know? Thanks for your insight!
@JohnnyMind Agreed, very interesting to see a game release for current-gen before last-gen. Maybe they could only focus on one version at a time and wanted to capitalize on launch window sales?
Cool, I was just reading about this game within the last week and wishing it would come to original Switch! I find wordless storytelling fascinating, as it's so foreign to me.
@DennyCrane How does it compare to the others in this style (first-person horror with formerly cute things after you)? I see them everywhere, like Poppy Playtime, and some of them look genuinely creepy, but are they any fun?
-Edit- Also, haha, can anyone tell me the subgenre name I was clumsily searching for? Mascot horror?
@AlanaHagues Just a heads-up, there's a typo in the second paragraph, first sentence of the second opinion: "handled."
I really like that @NintendoLife provided an updated mini-review for the NSO release! This game is fantastic and, as Alana said, an underrated gem. Truly an unexpected but welcome addition. Really hoping for Klonoa 3!
@Kyloctopus Yeahhh, those cutscenes were genuinely magical to see on a handheld. Full Ghibli-esque cinematics in your hands, professionally voiced and scored!
@AussieMcBucket They definitely iterated on the formula, so maybe 3 added a mechanic or something that series fans really like.
I know that some fans prefer certain rosters and even how certain characters are outfitted. I remember a friend being disappointed, years ago, that the latest game included his favorite character but just gave them a generic sword and fighting style instead of their unique weapon/fighting style. Really sucked the fun out of it for him, so he just picked up one of the many versions of an older entry, haha. Maybe it's something like that and this is just "the one" for some fans.
