Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Shifts 3 Million Copies In The US In Just 11 Days

gokev13

Dang, I really want to pull my Christmas present out of the closet and start playing it. It's no fair that I contributed to these sales figures but haven't been able to sit down and actually but some decent time into it.

Then on Christmas the kids will hog it, having fun without really appreciating the gaming history and intricate controls within the game. Oh well, maybe I will spawn infinite Waluigis for them.

Re: Nintendo Switch Becomes The Fastest-Selling Console Of This Generation In The US

gokev13

Just looking at the first party games coming on the horizon I think 2019 will be a good year. Yoshi, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid, and Fire Emblem. Throw in some third parties, ports, indies, etc. and I know I won't be able to play everything I want. At the very least I don't think people will be able to complain about the lack of games on the Switch by the end of 2019.

Who am I kidding, of course people will complain. 😉

Re: Video: Here's The Only Technical Analysis Of Smash Bros. Ultimate You'll Need

gokev13

@Cobalt I'm sorry if I misinterpreted what you said but I still feel like you are implying that Ultimate is a port or in your own words:

I clearly see Smash Ultimate like and "Enhanced port of the Wii U version"

Yes you said "enhanced port" but that still saying it is a port. Yes at the beginning you said "like", which would mean it is similar to an "enhanced port" but not actually an "enhanced port", but you seem to argue in the rest of the comment why Ultimate is an "enhanced port". True you never actually call it a port but your comment seemed to imply it was a port. Putting enhanced in front doesn't change that in my eyes.

If I were to say, "Smash games were like enhanced racing games", I would probably need to explain further. The more I could argue that statement the more reasonably others can conclude that I actually might think Smash could be considered a racing game even if I never say it actually is a racing game. If I just clarify that it can be comparable to racing games in a few minor ways but I don't actually think it is a racing game than that should be enough to convince people I was just making a comparison.

I get that they used base code from Smash 4 but I still think it should be considered a new Smash game. It's not a port, it's not an enhanced port, it's not a remake, it's not a Smash compilation, it is a sequel, which in my eyes makes it a new Smash game.

I like the house analogy but I would see it more as using the blue prints of the last house you built to build a new house. They may have used the old base code but they seem to have scrutinized every detail, keeping what works, tweaking things, removing and adding things. I mean obviously making video games is different than building houses.

Try this analogy: Imagine you have a machine that took a blueprint that you inputted and instantly made a house appear out of nothing based on the blueprint. If you are using it to design and construct houses for people to live in the houses are going to have a lot of similar elements that are the same as to previous ones because your customers will have certain expectations. Whether you draw up new blueprints everytime or decide to considerably overhaul the last blueprint you made in order to save time, the output would still be considered a new house design because even if you didn't start from scratch the end result is still quite different. If you made a house that was popular but had to make a few slight updates because of changing tastes in the future, it could be argued that you really didn't design a new house.

Anyways that's how I see it. I guess you are using the term "enhanced port" to describe a game that you don't think fits into any other category. I personally don't think the term accurately describes what Smash Ultimate is though.

Have a good day.

@Cobalt
I should leave it alone but I really am confused as to how anyone one can still consider Ultimate to be a port of Smash 4. Even if they both use the same base code they have so many differences, including different menus, modes, mechanics as well a completely new single player experience.

I have been playing Smash 4 recently and got a chance to play Ultimate this weekend and they even feel and play differently from each other.

We probably just use different definitions for what is considered a "port". For instance, DKC:TF for Switch is an excellent example of a port. It is practically the same game as it's WiiU counterpart with a few minor additions. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also an example of a port but if someone wanted to argue it to be more of a remake than a port they would have some fair points in order to make that argument.

It's almost like you want to hold to a very loose definition of what a port is in order to make arguments that ruffle the feathers of Smash Ultimate fans. Even though I wouldn't even consider Ultimate to be a remake of 4, you should try arguing that instead. You would still ruffle feathers but you wouldn't look as wrong.

Have fun!

Re: Reggie: Don't Expect Nintendo Switch Online To "Mirror" The Competition

gokev13

I'm usually a patient man, and I also have been really enjoying the NES games but I hope that those "plans continue to evolve" sooner rather than later for everyone's sake. At this point in time I have probably got my money's worth from the NES online alone and I haven't even made it through the first 20 games.

Reggie said stay tuned and they haven't told us any if the games being released starting January, but since he also said they were continuing to focus on NES games so I imagine we won't get news of any new developments to the subscription service until around E3. I do think they better have some more changes in store before September rolls around or else they will probably not get many renewals.

Though what do I know? I played Tecmo Football for over an hour today.

Re: Review: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - The Absolute Pinnacle Of Nintendo's Fighting Series

gokev13

I just read an article about people being completely fed up with the online portion of Smash Ultimate but this review says it works fine. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

My internet plan may cause lag. Download speeds are fine but my upload speeds are terrible until my internet provider can provide fiber optics to my rural community.

Splatoon 2 seems to work fine for me though so maybe it will be all right.

Re: Review: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - The Absolute Pinnacle Of Nintendo's Fighting Series

gokev13

Well this game just seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Did Nintendo even talk about it at all? How are they expecting to generate excitement for a game like this if they aren't even going to bother spending any time promoting it?

Seriously though I am feeling the excitement of my childhood again. Going to give it to my family for Christmas and then watch as they refuse to play with me because my kids say I'm to good and my wife hates it because, quote, "I have no idea what is going on." Single player mode here I come!

Re: Nintendo Hits Huge Milestones As Switch Sales Soar Across Black Friday And Cyber Monday

@Kimyonaakuma

I am wondering the same thing about the Switch. I can list 3 families in my area that has a Switch (mine included) and I gave never seen anyone else playing one in public.

However when I go to the local Walmart I will see a ton of Switches one week and then another week 4 or 5 missing from the shelf, and then the next week it will be restocked again and on and on.

Though to be fair my Switch gets played a lot and taken various places by our family but it is rarely played in a public setting.

Re: More Than Ten Games Are Being Announced At The 2018 Game Awards

My cousin's, uncle's, son said he found this leaked script for the game awards:

Reggie walks on stage, "Good evening. People love the Switch and it is my pleasure to talk about another reason that long time fans of the Metroid series are going to love the Switch. I am, of course, talking about the NES online service we're you can play, the original Metroid game right now on the Nintendo Switch."

Trailer plays for NES Online, Reggie gives parting words and exits.

Re: Dev Behind Darksiders II For Wii U Worked On An E3 Demo Nintendo Never Showed

gokev13

Got Darksiders II on the second humble bundle for WiiU. I actually just decided to play through it starting in September. I'm still working on it but I think I'm getting close to the end.

It's a fun game but I wouldn't have ever considered buying it if it wasn't for humble bundle. I would now consider buying the first or third one if given a chance.

Re: Switch Online Is Going To Be The Place To Play Classic Nintendo Content, According To Reggie

gokev13

On the topic of NES games not aging well, yesterday one of my friends said his wife was interested in getting a Switch for the family since Black Friday deals are looking and he just had a few questions. I invited him over and told him about what he would be expecting to pay to have four people playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we tried out some family friendly multiplayer games I owned and I showed him a few others on the eShop that I thought he would like plus discussed a few more coming out in the future. I discussed the portable aspects and how it can be great but young kids handling it, docking it and putting controllers on and off still makes me nervous because of how rough they can be.

I then told him a bit about online and how it worked and the costs, etc. I turned on NES Online so he could see what it was like and we ended up playing Super Mario Bros 3 until other business forced us to say goodbye over an hour later. To be honest we probably would have played longer. I feel like the games have aged just fine.

Re: Switch Online Is Going To Be The Place To Play Classic Nintendo Content, According To Reggie

gokev13

I've said it before but I am okay with the slow trickle of games at the moment since I want to play through all the NES games on the online service and I am already getting behind.

I am happy with what they are doing as long as the library keeps expanding without getting to the point where games start cycling out and access to the library continues with new consoles without starting over again. That would be great and I am going to remain optimistic, (though I can't help but feel like it just doesn't work like that).

Of course I expect them to add other legacy consoles to the online service as well. That would be excellent.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

gokev13

I'm a subscriber. I have been systematically playing through all the NES games (in between current Switch games) and I am currently on Ice Climbers and I have enjoyed myself with every NES game I have played so far (even the bad ones). So you won't hear me complain about the NES games.

I can still play Splatoon. It worked well when online was free, and it still works well now that I pay. I would prefer it was still free but nothing I can really do about it, I knew I was going to be paying for online eventually so I made peace with that a long time ago.

Besides having my saves backup on the cloud I haven't had need of that future but if I ever lost my save data I would be happy it was a feature. They should allow all games to back up though. I promise not to cheat in Splatoon, Nintendo.

Mario Party online made me grumpy. I didn't buy it for the online feature at all but I thought it looked entertaining for what it was. I didn't think I would have so much lag and disconnects playing a few minutes games with three other randoms online but it is almost unplayable for me. With 4 players it always lags terribly but it had worked fine if I only manage to connect with one or two people. Not sure why I can play a eight player match in Splatoon no problem but a 4 player mini game is unplayable. Mario Party online was the first time I got grumpy paying for online. Not because of how basic the online feature is in that game, but because it was basic I have tons of issues trying to play it. If there was no online feature in the game I honestly wouldn't have even thought about it or cared.

Hopefully Smash works good for me but I am nervous since they basically told us we should have a wired connection. I don't really want to be paying more to have it playable.

Re: Super Mario Party Has Sold 1.5 Million Copies In The Month Of October

gokev13

My family has been having a lot of fun with the game, the kids seem to like it a lot better than 10 (but they loved that one as well). I think it has a good amount of content and variety but at least one more board would have made it considerably better.

I didn't even realize though that I needed a game that let you work together to put 8-bit Mario characters together until just recently.

Re: Video: Here's A Look At The Latest NES Releases Now Playable On Switch

gokev13

Excuse me but I just need to get something straight. I just need to know how to feel about this issue.

Nintendo provided us a way to play 23+ boring old games that everyone is tired of playing that they wish to own not rent. They should be giving us these games that we are all sick of faster. Also they always seem to underestimate the power of these games that everyone is sick of by not producing enough NES classics.

Okay, so I should feel outraged that I cannot properly buy and own hundreds of these tired, old, boring games on my Switch.

Good, now that I know how I should feel about it I just need to find a way to stop enjoying actually playing all the NES games on my Switch.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Maddening Stance On Retro Gaming Is Driving Me To Piracy

gokev13

I don't mind the 3 games a month Netflix style right now because of the 20 NES games on the their right now I have only played through about four. I enjoy playing them when I do and I plan to play through every single one of them.

If the drip feed starts all over again during the next console generation (which it probably will) then I will start getting frustrated.

Re: Feature: What Do You Want From A New Nintendo Switch?

gokev13

I think a Switch mini would be a good idea, at least for my family. I do not have any desire to buy multiple switchs but if there was a smaller, cheaper version that played all the same games but didn't have the detachable controls or expensive docking station I could see getting that for my kids. They seem to prefer playing it n handheld mode anyways, even if the TV is not in use and they are sitting right in front of it.

I think if Nintendo wants to put a Switch on everyone's hands a Switch mini would be the best way to do it.

Re: Nintendo Adding Three More Games To Switch Online NES Library Next Week

gokev13

I think 3 a month is alright but I really hope this is it though. What I mean is I hope that whenever a new console is released that these libraries just stay with the online service and you will be able to access the same libraries on your Nintendo Gameswitch U the day you buy it providing you have a subscription. That would be wonderful but I am scared it won't happen.
