Re: Soapbox: Has Nintendo Set A Precedent That 'Switch 2' Can't Hope To Match?

gokev13

I think part of the problem is that a lot of families will end up simply skipping the next console because they are not hard-core video game fans. A know a number of people who had Wii and they were content with that all throughout the WiiU's life cycle. Some of those people ended up buying a Switch late in it's life cycle, and I cannot imagine them wanting to shell out hundreds of dollars on a new console anytime soon when they have a perfectly good one at home.

If the next console is a powered up Switch, I imagine a good portion of the current Switch owners will not care. They might not care no matter what the next console is. Even though I will likely be getting the next console at some point, I will admit that there are so many games I want to play and haven't on the current Switch that I could probably skip a generation and still have my gaming hobby satisfied.

Re: Doug Bowser (Kind Of) Addresses Complaints About Switch Online's Nintendo 64 Emulation

gokev13

I must not be picky bit I haven't noticed any poor emulation yet. The lack of fog isn't a big deal but yes certain parts don't look right because of it but otherwise the lack of fog is a good thing for the most part in my opinion. I understand there is a bit more lag but it doesn't seem to be enough to effect my playing, and it isn't something I would ever have been able to notice. I've been enjoying it so far. I don't think anyone will be able to convince me it is shoddy or bad because I just can't see it from first hand experience.

Re: Switch Online Surpasses 32 Million Subs, Nintendo Says It Will Continue To "Improve And Expand" Expansion Pack Tier

gokev13

I'm happy with my choice to get the expansion pass so far.

I do wonder if they will be adding access to more DLC content in the future with a subscription. It seems odd that they would include Animal Crossing DLC and nothing else but it also seems odd that they wouldn't simply say that access to more DLC will be available in the future to help give a more positive reception to their pricing choice in the future. They always assure us they will be adding more value in the future but I wish they gave a little more heads up on what and when we could expect it.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 2.0.0 Patch Notes - Final Major Update, Happy Home Paradise DLC And More

gokev13

@TryToBeHopeful
I'm the island representative in my family and my son was playing this morning and already donated money to Harv's island and did a bunch of the other new stuff. He said the Roost wasn't there yet but I doubt he even tried talking with Blathers. I haven't played yet myself so I can't confirm if the Island representative has to get the Roost up and running but it seems like everything else was good to go.

Re: Talking Point: How Many Hours Is A 'Short' Game For You?

gokev13

I agree with the idea that it depends on the game. A good shorter game is okay because if you really enjoyed it, it can be easier to revisit and finish every once in awhile, thus making it worth investing money in. I love long games as well but some of my favourite games that I have played in the last few years and spent 100's of hours on, I just can't imagine starting over anytime soon because it is such a time commitment. Not that I didn't get my money worth out of it already.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

gokev13

I'll be getting it since I was excited for the N64 and genesis games coming to Switch Online. It costs more than I was expecting but I voted for the unsure if it is a good deal or not. The reason is that it all depends on what they end up doing with it in the future. The Animal Crossing DLC makes it so I can stomach the price since I probably wouldn't have bothered getting it except for the fact that my kids had wanted a Happy Home Designer addition for awhile so it kind of helps me out a bit. It does seem weird though and I would feel ticked if they offered DLC for a game I didn't have or enjoyed. Makes me wonder if access to future DLC will become a normal part of the expansion pass, which I would be okay with.

I always felt the original subscription gave me good value for my money and time will tell if the expansion pass feels worth it or not but I am willing to pay it for what they are offering now so unless they literally add nothing else for a year I am sure I will end up being happy with it.

Re: 'Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece' Collection Brings The Entire Saga To Switch

gokev13

I will need a bit more information on how this is all going to work and cost before I decide it's worth it or not. I've been interested in getting into the Kingdom Hearts series for awhile and although I would have preferred a physical collection, even if it was just 1 and 2, if the price is right I would consider paying to play these games.

For those of you who need to own a game to enjoy it, I hear you. It doesn't matter as much to me as it used to though. Ownership can also be considered an illusion since you only own it until suddenly you don't. Whether a game gets lost, stolen, broken, or just deteriorates while sitting on your shelf. You may think you own a game you no longer do for years if you never get around to actually trying to play it to only realize it is either gone or dead. To me the most important part of any work of art is to experience it. If there are more options for me to experience it than actually physically owning a copy of it, all the better. Cloud gaming and subscription services may have drawbacks but if it makes it easier for people to experience these games, that's at least one good thing about it.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Replay Games?

gokev13

When I was young it was a lot easier to replay games, plus the older games were shorter which made them way easier to decide to play again. I love RPG's and I like to 100% them as much as I can but to do so these days is a way bigger commitment than it was in the NES and SNES era. Back then I would finish an RPG and then start it over right away and play through again. I loved Dragon Quest XI but I just can't see myself playing through it again for a long while, if ever. When I replay games they tend to be the older ones now just because they are less if a time commitment and it has been so long since the last time I played them. Maybe someday I will replay some of the more recent longer RPG'S but I don't know.

Re: Feature: Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Foreshadowed Breath Of The Wild's Big Changes

gokev13

ALBW was a great game and I really enjoyed the renting system. I wouldn't mind if Breath of the Wild 2 had a similar structure. I didn't mind that Breath of the wild gave you all your tools for exploration pretty quick in the beginning but I also longed for the feeling of slowly gathering the tools you need to explore where you want.

I enjoyed this article as well but looking back when I read the title I expected that there was something in ALBW that foreshadowed the story in Breath of the Wild at first.

Re: Video: Get A Closer Look At Nintendo's Game Builder Garage

gokev13

Just this year I was trying to find an easy to use game creator to help my son get his feet wet making games. He is always making up his own board games and card games, loves Mario Maker, and has expressed interest in making video games. I was struggling to find one that wouldn't be to intimidating at first, easy to use, affordable and would appeal to his personality. This couldn't have come at a better time, I think it will check all the boxes.

Re: Feature: Every Dragon Quest Game Ranked

gokev13

I missed out on Dragon Quest VI which I am always kicking myself for. I have a copy of all the other ones (except X). When VI was released on DS I had just played IV and V pretty close together and was ready for a break from Dragon Quest for a bit, fully expecting to pick it up a bit later. I ended up never getting it and I have been kicking myself since. I know I could just bye the smartphone version but I am not a fan of the look, or playing games on my smartphone. Maybe someday.

Re: Soapbox: Be Happy, This Is The True Golden Age Of Gaming

gokev13

I agree with this article and have been greatly enjoying this era of gaming. I also remember the old cassette games except for me it was the Vic20, It also took cartridges as well though.

Yes a lot of great games came out if the 80's and 90's but you have a lot more options to still play a lot of those games nowadays. Back then some games were scarce and if you didn't have the money to buy them when they were released you may never have a chance to play them again, well unless you could find them in a rental store but good luck finishing a long RPG before it had to be returned and then your save would be gone the next time you were able to rent a game.

There are a ton of options available to gamers these days, the hardest part is finding the time to actually play what you want.

Re: Random: Elon Musk Appears On Saturday Night Live As Wario

gokev13

This sketch just didn't do it for me, and it looks like I am not alone. SNL sketches have always been hit or miss for me and I think that's just the nature of the show. Even watching it as a teen I usually felt that half the sketches dragged on to long, even if they started out with a funny concept they had a tendency to beat a joke to death. Every once in awhile they have sketches that I find really funny. I do think they have some talented actors and writers.

I think my main problem with this sketch was that a lot of the jokes they used have already been beaten to death by a ton of Mario spoofs I have seen for like 20 years. Mario is actually a drug addict? Heard it a thousand times. Using the sound effects in unexpected ways? Definitely nothing I haven't seen before. References to these children characters engaging in adult situations and sexual misconduct? Pretty much a standard for these kinds of sketches. Basically just shoe horned a bunch of tired old jokes together in a really awkward way. It just didn't really do it for me.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Had A Spectacular Year, And May Have Big Plans

gokev13

@screechums
Oh? I would have guessed a moderator got involved. Oh well, usually when I am feeling angry or frustrated about life video games is one of my tools to relieve and process those feelings. I feel like at this point in time if someone can't find video games they enjoy and feel like they need to lash out about it maybe it's time to find another hobby.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Had A Spectacular Year, And May Have Big Plans

gokev13

Sounds like I missed some pretty entertaining comments. Everyone seems to be responding to someone but the comments they are responding to don't seem to be there for one reason or other. I don't think I have blocked anyone either. Oh well.

I'm glad Nintendo had a great year and people really embraced the Switch. When the Switch was first announced I thought it looked great for me but I wasn't sure if it would just have a cult following or if the wider public would embrace it. Glad to see it's the latter.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Next Update Arrives Later This Week

gokev13

@dugan
Hey no problem, if I have something positive to say I try and get it out there, especially when I keep seeing a bunch of negative opinions. Not saying people aren't entitled to those opinions or that they don't have valid reasons for being disappointed in certain games. I just want to bring something positive to the conversation as well.

Thanks for replying and for your thoughts as well. It does seem like we do indeed think alike. 😃

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Next Update Arrives Later This Week

gokev13

@dugan Thanks for agreeing, sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few who actually appreciate the games Nintendo makes these days. Though some people think my enjoyment of the games Nintendo has been making is a problem because then Nintendo is justified in continually making what they see as underdeveloped and unfinished games. Sure every game has flaws and New Horizons has some as well but as I mentioned the things New Horizons has to offer checks a lot of boxes for me. Filling the museum was always one of my favorites and the museum is great this time around. Being able to decorate and change the whole island is another thing that has been another great addition and I enjoy father materials and recipes and crafting stuff which is another reason I love this iteration.

I guess the stuff people are saying is missing must not be what I like about AC games because I don't really care about gyroids, or what a lot of the shops had to offer and locations had to offer in New Leaf. I mean I would welcome the Roost for instance but it's absence doesn't break the game for me or anything. I like and enjoy the game. Yes if things like the paintings and diving didn't get added this year I probably would have got tired of it sooner but it's there and I actually appreciated that stuff like that came layer because I really vibe with the slowly play through Animal Crossing over a long period of time mentality and not the play for hours at a time and time travelling to get everything the game offers as soon as possible mentality. I do hope we get a few more substantial additions though, a place to play mini games together would be great, especially now that you can play local multiplayer on one switch, and I wouldn't even mind if something like that was paid DLC as long as it was done well and I mean mini games that are more creative than who can catch the most fish or bugs in a time limit.

I don't know, maybe my brain is just wired the same way as the people who are making decisions for this game is. I like what I like and a lot of Nintendo games have always just met what I want out of video games. I definitely see a lot more to like in ACNH than I dislike so why complain?

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Next Update Arrives Later This Week

gokev13

I am still playing ACNH daily. I know everyone is saying it has less content but for whatever reason NH has more lasting appeal to me than NL, as in I have been finding I still enjoy playing NH a year later but for some reason NL started to feel like a chore sooner. I can't quite put my finger on why that is. I do agree that this announcement of an update is rather disappointing though since there is nothing really new to experience. It's hard to know at this point if they will be doing something more substantial in the future or if it will just be more of the same kind of updates from here on in.

Re: Talking Point: Which Indie Game Should Be "99"ed Next?

gokev13

@screechums
Oh I think you misunderstood me a bit but it is probably more to do with my wording than anything. I am actually pretty choosy with the games I play and even how I spend my time. I also enjoy reading quite a bit as well, and for the most part like watching TV shows and movies but I cut the time I spent watching stuff down considerably as my free time became more scarce because I enjoyed reading and gaming more than so I give those priority in my free time. Enough about that though, I don't really need to defend how I like to spend my time.

Anyways let me try and clarify. There are games and books that I love so much that I will revisit every once and awhile and yes there are a few on the online service that I have played through a ton of times but most of them not for a very long time. Conversely there are games and books that I greatly enjoyed and would consider among my favorites but I may never get around to playing or reading them again, which doesn't mean they weren't a full or complete experience or even that they aren't worth experiencing again it's just as you mentioned time is a limited resource. I have friends who I have lost touch with for one reason or another but it doesn't mean the time I did share with them in my life wasn't meaningful.

The reason the subscription service works for me is because it offers games to experience that I normally wouldn't ever have. I have a lot of nostalgia for the NES/SNES era and having a library of games to play. I don't feel like a spent a large amount of time just sampling a bunch of games. I savoured each one. I gave each one the chance and played all the way through all of them. To me it was a valuable experience and I played games that I normally would never have bothered with or even new existed and found some new favourites. There were games I wasn't excited about at all that I ended up spending way more time playing because I ended up enjoying more than I thought I would. Yes there were some that I didn't like but then I just really leaned heavily on the save states and rewind feature and was still able to experience what they had to offer, finding enjoyment in them without needing to set aside hours to master unforgiving gameplay to see a cool boss or level near the end of the game. I would love this Library to continue to grow, and I hope that the digital age will help preserve libraries of games for longer allowing people to play an obscure game that they were interested without trying to track down a rare physical copy.

I think as long as people are passionate about games, good games will continue to be made. I want to experience games I enjoy, but I don't need to own them for those experiences to be meaningful.

Well either way I guess maybe we are just wired differently, but I could probably analyze and explain why I am happy with the games I play for a long time but there are probably better uses of both our time. Take care.

Re: Talking Point: Which Indie Game Should Be "99"ed Next?

gokev13

@screechums

I agree that some of the cash grabbing happening with video games is troubling and I used to think I would always buy retail if I could but I actually warmed up to digital for a number of reasons and DLC is perfectly fine in a lot of cases.

When I was growing up I lived in a rural area and there were very few places to buy video games and in a lot of cases (like with Square Soft or Enix games) I would never have a chance to see them in a store let alone buy them. My brother and I would have killed to be able to just buy some of those games on eshop whenever we could scrape the money together because usually when we could buy a game we could not find the one we wanted. Downloading a game is pretty convenient and I am finding more and more that by the time I won't be able to play them anymore, I won't really care. Plus certain games like Mario Maker or Animal Crossing just seem more practical to have downloaded for short bursts.

As far as DLC goes, I gave been playing games for a long time and I cannot really think of to many games this generation that I have bought that I was disappointed with the amount of content. Sometimes I have been more overwhelmed with how much there is to do because I am not always full blown completionist on every game but I do often like to. The games I have bought DLC for I have been happy to but also felt satisfied with the game without it. Yes I know there are games that just feel incomplete without buying the DLC but I guess I just don't go for those kinds of games because I can't think of one myself that I one where I was bothered by it. In a game like Breath of the Wild I was excited that they were releasing DLC, it was great to have an excuse to play a game like that longer. I might have bought the DLC for a game like Fire Emblem but I only played through with one house so far and don't feel like buying it until I play through the other two, which by then I probably won't feel the need to play more Fire Emblem for awhile. That's fine.

I really don't miss Virtual Console. I was excited when it was a thing but then found I just didn't really buy a lot of the virtual console games. I actually prefer that it on prescription because I actually play the games on offer. I think I ended up spending about 400 hours altogether playing old NES and SNES games on the Switch. Some where old favourites, some I always wanted to play but never had a chance and some I never even really heard of and I was glad I played. I know the whole subscription thing isn't liked by a lot of people but I genuinely am glad they did it this way and I have it continues to expand. As a matter of fact I finally finished playing through every single SNES and NES game on the service last night and hope that more will drop soon. This is the first time I was caught up since they added SNES to the service. I really hope it continues to grow and doesn't just get dropped or started over next console but it probably will. Oh well.

So as far as your comments about Nintendo Life, I've seen them be negative and criticize but I guess maybe when they post positive stuff about things that are happening I don't think it is a bad thing because I genuinely feel positive about a lot of what Nintendo is doing, not everything, and sure there are things to criticize as there always will be, but for me, this is a great time to be a gamer.

Re: Talking Point: Which Indie Game Should Be "99"ed Next?

gokev13

@screechums
I disagree that Nintendo hasn't come up with an original idea in decades. I know it's a matter of personal opinion and tastes but some of my favorite games of all time have come during the Switch's lifetime. Take games like Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey for instance. Yes it's same old Link and Mario again but the games have mechanics that are new and fresh enough that they probably could have tried to use those concepts to create new IPs but would those games have been better if they had new characters and settings? I guess it depends but why not use already tried and true characters that people love. Breath of the Wild was the first Zelda game that some people played. Of course when they add new things to preexisting franchises some people complain that it is to different and wish it was more like whatever their favorite game in the series is. Either way I am usually happy with how they usually manage to keep their IP's fresh while still staying true to their characters, but that's just my opinion.

Re: QubicGames Is Back With Another Ridiculous Switch Sale, 17 Games Discounted To Just $0.17

gokev13

It's funny how I was excited to get a lot of these games when they could offer them for free but now that they just super cheep it is to much of a bother in my eyes to pick up the ones I don't have. I've only briefly played a handful of the ones I downloaded and the ones I played weren't bad at all. If I didn't already have a massive backlog and was looking for something new to play I would probably look into this sale more, but not now.

Re: SNK's Guerrilla War Is This Week's Switch eShop Arcade Archives Release

gokev13

Find memories of playing this co-op on the NES. Infinite continues and ammo, just hold the A and B buttons while running forward to continuously throw grenades and shoot bullets. It was so mindless and pointless and although you would try not to die it didn't matter. A few times if the continue screen popped up if both players would try and select yes you could accidentally select no and then you would have to start over. The continue screen was the most stressful part. Good times.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2021 Nintendo Direct, Then?

gokev13

I overall enjoyed the direct. I do wish they showed us something from Breath of the Wild 2 but it's fine. There were a lot of games I was very interested in but also realize I will probably never play, and and a few that I will try to make a priority to play but still might not get to them because that's life. Mario Golf will probably be in my house shortly after release, my son wants Skyward Sword which is yet another game we already own that he will hound me to buy so we will see. I haven't purchased Smash DLC yet but they definitely have added some great characters so it is tempting.

During the Splatoon 3 reveal I was wondering if it was a more of a Splatoon open world action adventure game which really intrigued me to be honest but it looks to be just more of the same Splatoon. Maybe the single player stuff will be more fleshed out though.

All in all I was happy with the direct, sad that the amount of games I want to play is currently at an undoable amount.

Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

gokev13

@rockodoodle
I haven't double dipped on Pikmin either but it's not a game my son was interested in so that is partially why. I did get DK Tropical Freeze but since I never had that on WiiU I felt it was worth getting. Surprised my kids with it and I thought we could have fun playing through it as a family, taking turns with multiplayer and so forth. For some reason it became the game my kids absolutely refused to play with me. My son who loves 2d Mario games and animals could not care less about the game. He tried the first level by himself and decided it was to hard and has refused to play it with me ever since. He also insisted it wasn't two player co-op when I told him it was and didn't even care there was a Funky mode that made it easier. I guess I don't get it because if my Dad ever showed up with a brand new video game and was eager to play it with me when I was a kid it probably would have been one of the best surprises of my life. My Dad is a good man but he just did not care for video games at all. Sorry, guess I kind of went on a tangent with that one. Kids are fun.

Re: Trials Of Mana Has Surpassed One Million Sales Worldwide

gokev13

@eltomo I wish that they would at least put Secret of Evermore on the SNES online. I doubt Square has any plans to do anything else with a game like that but I would love to play through it again. Same with Illusions of Gaia, and the other two in that series I never got to play.

Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

gokev13

I wasn't planning on double dipping on any of these WiiU Mario ports but my Mario obsessed son has other ideas. Personally I loved 3D World but playing with my young children over and over really burned me out on the game. Playing the same first levels over and over because they want cat suits without losing them right away. Dealing with tantrums because either someone wasted all the cat suits or else someone lost their cat suit right away. They're older now and they all really want to buy it but I am just not as interested. I kind of wish Bowser's Fury wasn't a thing because I think that is what they are most excited to experience but it will be harder to convince them that they don't need to buy a game we already own because of it. I'm sure it is only a matter of time before it is in my house though but to be fair these games get played a whole lot more on the Switch than they ever did on the WiiU.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Four More Titles

gokev13

I'll definitely give these a go since I have been playing through every game released on the NSO service. Recently finished Peacekeepers. It was all right and the poor translation sure made me laugh. Currently working on DKC3 which I am enjoying very much. I have sunk a lot of hours into these games and usually when I am getting close to finishing off all the games they add more.

Re: Talking Point: How Are You Keeping Fit And Active In 2021?

gokev13

I keep trying to get regular with Ring Fit because when I do do it regularly I do seem to feel better but different life commitments or changes keep making it difficult. I got back into it during October but then covid beginning of November and haven't felt right since. I am waiting for the okay from the Dr. to make sure I don't have blood clotting or any other serious issues going on and then I plan to start exercising again despite how my body feels to see if I can get back to normal. I have been thankful for a game like ring fit though, it was a great investment.

Re: Nintendo's Doug Bowser Talks About Switch Joy-Con Drift

gokev13

I wish I knew why some people get lucky with no drift and meanwhile I currently have 4 joy-cons all which have a certain amount of drift, some worse than others. Three of them already have been sent for repair and are back to drifting. They do get a lot of use and I have kids but I have noticed them doing anything abusive to the joy-cons (If they can't treat the Switch properly they don't get to play it).

I don't know, it definitely happens with the left ones sooner than the right ones so it does seem to be related to how much use it gets but I don't know.

Re: Random: The NSO Icon On The Switch Home Menu Is Driving Some Users Crazy

gokev13

My first thought eas surprise and excitement because when my Switch wanted to do an update I just figured it was a stability one or something. When the Switch restarted and I saw the icon I was excited about what the new shiny icon was about. It's a good idea to have that stuff accessible and easier to manage but since it doesn't match the other icons I think the complaints are valid.

Re: Super Mario Maker Online Services To Be Terminated, Will Soon Be Removed From Sale

gokev13

I enjoyed Mario Maker 1 but I haven't played it in years, and probably won't again. Maybe I will check my notifications sometime next year just for the heck of it.

I felt like by the time I was getting done with the game I would work really hard on fine tuning a level idea only to have it taken down shortly after because it wouldn't get likes.

I like Mario Maker 2 better for the most part but I played it less than MM1 so far. It's a shame that more free DLC wasn't added. Super Mario 3d world sure looks lonely in the extra play styles section.

Re: Feature: Best Super Nintendo (SNES) Games

gokev13

I always love reading through these kinds of lists, especially if it has to do with Super Nintendo, even though the top 10 usually isn't to much of a surprise any more.

Now I just hope they add some more games to the online service soon. I'm getting very close to playing through them all.
